In this paper we present the results of damage tests performed at 1064 and 355-nm at 8-10 ns on conventional and rapid growth DKDP tripler crystals. The crystals were laser conditioned prior to damage testing by raster scanning using either Nd:YAG (1064 and 355 nm, 8-10 ns) or excimer lasers at 248, 308 or 351 nm with pulse durations of approximately 30-47 ns. The results show that it is possible to attain increases in 355-nm damage probability fluences of 2X for excimer conditioning at 248 and 308 nm. However, these wavelengths can induce absorption sufficient to induce bulk fracture by thermal shock when impurities such as arsenic, rubidium and sulfur are present in the crystals in sufficient quantity. Tests to evaluate the efficiency of 351-nm conditioning (XeF excimer) show improvements of 2X and that thermal fracture by induced absorption is not a problem. We also discuss our recent discovery that low fluence raster scanning at UV wavelengths leads to 1064-nm damage thresholds of over 100 J/cm 2 (10-ns pulses).

The effective lifetime of optics is limited by both laser-induced damage and the subsequent growth of laser initiated damage sites. We have measured the growth rate of laser-induced damage in fused silica in both air and vacuum at 527 nm. For damage on the exit surface, the data shows exponential growth in the lateral size of the damage site with shot number. The exponential growth coefficient depends linearly on the laser fluence. The behavior at the fluence threshold for growth is contrasted to that observed at 351 nm. The growth rate was not significantly affected by either the wavelength of the initiating fluence or the presence of 10 torr of air as compared to vacuum. When the damage is located on the input surface, it has both a higher threshold for growth and does not grow exponentially.

The management of back reflections and leakage through the Pockels cell and polarizer switch in the National Ignition Facility (NIF) beamlines requires robust beam dumps that can operate unattended for thousands of shots within the confines of the vacuum spatial filters. Off-line experiments and modeling have been used to investigate the use of metal for these beam dumps. We conclude that a stainless steel beam dump will have sufficient lifetime and will safely absorb fluences in the required range, from 1 J/cm{sup 2} to 4 kJ/cm{sup 2}, at 1 {micro}m.

Atmospheric turbulence severely limits the resolution of ground-based telescopes. Adaptive optics can correct for the aberrations caused by the atmosphere, but requires a bright wavefront reference source in close angular proximity to the object being imaged. Since natural reference stars of the necessary brightness are relatively rare, methods of generating artificial reference beacons have been under active investigation for more than a decade. In this paper, we report the first significant image improvement achieved using a sodium-layer laser guide star as a wavefront reference for a high-order adaptive optics system. An artificial beacon was created by resonant scattering from atomic sodium in the mesosphere, at an altitude of 95 km. Using this laser guide star, an adaptive optics system on the 3 m Shane Telescope at Lick Observatory produced a factor of 2.4 increase in peak intensity and a factor of 2 decrease in full width at half maximum of a stellar image, compared with image motion compensation alone. The Strehl ratio when using the laser guide star as the reference was 65% of that obtained with a natural guide star, and the image full widths at half maximum were identical, 0.3 arc sec, using either the laser or the natural guide star. This sodium-layer laser guide star technique holds great promise for the world's largest telescopes.

The installation and performance characteristics of a 20 W sodium beacon laser system for the 3 m Shane telescope at the Lick Observatory are presented.
