1. Waveform distortion for temperature compensation and synchronization in circadian rhythms: An approach based on the renormalization group method

Abstract

Numerous biological processes accelerate as temperatures increase, but the period of circadian rhythms remains constant, known as temperature compensation, while synchronizing with the 24h light-dark cycle. We theoretically explores the possible relevance of waveform distortions in circadian gene-protein dynamics to the temperature compensation and synchronization. Our analysis of the Goodwin model provides a coherent explanation of most of temperature compensation hypotheses. Using the renormalization group method, we analytically demonstrate that the decreasing phase of circadian protein oscillations should lengthen with increasing temperature, leading to waveform distortions to maintain a stable period. This waveform-period correlation also occurs in other oscillators like Lotka-Volterra and van der Pol models. A reanalysis of known data nicely confirms our findings on waveform distortion and its impact on synchronization range. Abstract

The jet cross-section and jet-substructure observables in $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV were measured by the PHENIX Collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Abstract

The PHENIX experiment measured the centrality dependence of two-pion Bose-Einstein correlation functions in $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV Au$+$Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The data are well represented by L\'evy-stable source distributions. The extracted source parameters are the correlation-strength parameter $\lambda$, the L\'evy index of stability $\alpha$, and the L\'evy-scale parameter $R$ as a function of transverse mass $m_T$ and centrality. The $\lambda(m_T)$ parameter is constant at larger values of $m_T$, but decreases as $m_T$ decreases. The L\'evy scale parameter $R(m_T)$ decreases with $m_T$ and exhibits proportionality to the length scale of the nuclear overlap region. The L\'evy exponent $\alpha(m_T)$ is independent of $m_T$ within uncertainties in each investigated centrality bin, but shows a clear centrality dependence. At all centralities, the L\'evy exponent $\alpha$ is significantly different from that of Gaussian ($\alpha=2$) or Cauchy ($\alpha=1$) source distributions. Comparisons to the predictions of Monte-Carlo simulations of resonance-decay chains show that in all but the most peripheral centrality class (50%-60%), the obtained results are inconsistent with the measurements, unless a significant reduction of the in-medium mass of the $\eta'$ meson is included. In each centrality class, the best value of the in-medium $\eta'$ mass is compared to the mass of the $\eta$ meson, as well as to several theoretical predictions that consider restoration of $U_A(1)$ symmetry in hot hadronic matter., Comment: 401 authors from 75 institutions, 20 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables. v1 is version submitted to Physical Review C. Abstract

The relation between charge order, its quantum fluctuations and optical phonon modes in cuprate superconductors remains an unsolved problem. The exploration of these excitations is however complicated by the presence of twinned domains. Here, we use uniaxial strain in combination with ultra-high-resolution Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) at the oxygen K- and copper L3-edges to study the excitations stemming from the charge ordering wave vector in La1.875Sr0.125CuO4. By detwinning stripe ordering, we demonstrate that the optical phonon anomalies do not show any stripe anisotropy. The low-energy charge excitations also retain an in-plane four-fold symmetry. As such, we find that both phonon and charge excitations are decoupled entirely from the strength of static charge ordering. The almost isotropic character of charge excitations remains a possible source for the strange metal properties found in the normal state of cuprate superconductors., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

High-momentum two-particle correlations are a useful tool for studying jet-quenching effects in the quark-gluon plasma. Angular correlations between neutral-pion triggers and charged hadrons with transverse momenta in the range 4--12~GeV/$c$ and 0.5--7~GeV/$c$, respectively, have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV. Suppression is observed in the yield of high-momentum jet fragments opposite the trigger particle, which indicates jet suppression stemming from in-medium partonic energy loss, while enhancement is observed for low-momentum particles. The ratio and differences between the yield in Au$+$Au collisions and $p$$+$$p$ collisions, $I_{AA}$ and $\Delta_{AA}$, as a function of the trigger-hadron azimuthal separation, $\Delta\phi$, are measured for the first time at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. 6. Feed-Forward Probabilistic Error Cancellation with Noisy Recovery Gates

Abstract

Probabilistic Error Cancellation (PEC) aims to improve the accuracy of expectation values for observables.This is accomplished using the probabilistic insertion of recovery gates, which correspond to the inverse of errors.However, the inserted recovery gates also induce errors. Thus, it is difficult to obtain accurate expectation values with PEC since the estimator of PEC has a bias due to noise induced by recovery gates.To address this challenge, we propose an improved version of PEC that considers the noise resulting from gate insertion, called Feed-Forward PEC (FFPEC). FFPEC provides an unbiased estimator of expectation values by cancelling out the noise induced by recovery gates.We demonstrate that FFPEC yields more accurate expectation values compared to conventional PEC method through numerical simulations with bit-flip and depolarizing noises.

7. Light Cone Cancellation for Variational Quantum Eigensolver Ansatz

Abstract

Variational Quantum Algorithms (VQAs) represent a class of algorithms that utilize a hybrid approach, combining classical and quantum computing techniques. In this approach, classical computers serve as optimizers that update circuit parameters to find approximate solutions to complex problems. In this study, we apply a method known as Light Cone Cancellation (LCC) to optimize variational circuits, effectively reducing the required number of qubits and gates for circuit simulation. We then evaluate the performance of LCC one of the VQAs -- the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) -- to address the Max-Cut problem. Compared with the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA), VQE offers greater degrees of freedom at lower circuit depths. By applying LCC to VQE, we can shift the complexity of circuit simulation from the number of qubits to the number of edges in the graph, i.e., from exponential time to polynomial time. This enables us to solve large problems up to 50 vertices, without actually simulating the entire circuit. From our simulation in a 7-qubit and a 27-qubit noisy devices, we show that LCC yields higher approximation ratios than those cases without LCC, implying that the effect of noise is reduced when LCC is applied.

8. Chondrule Destruction via Dust Collisions in Shock Waves

Abstract

A leading candidate for the heating source of chondrules and igneous rims is shock waves. This mechanism generates high relative velocities between chondrules and dust particles. We have investigated the possibility of the chondrule destruction in collisions with dust particles behind a shock wave using a semianalytical treatment. We find that the chondrules are destroyed during melting in collisions. We derive the conditions for the destruction of chondrules and show that the typical size of the observed chondrules satisfies the condition. We suggest that the chondrule formation and rim accretion are different events if they are heated by shock waves., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

Although the MeV gamma-ray band is a promising energy-band window in astrophysics, the current situation of MeV gamma-ray astronomy significantly lags behind those of the other energy bands in angular resolution and sensitivity. An electron-tracking Compton camera (ETCC), a next-generation MeV detector, is expected to revolutionize the situation. An ETCC tracks each Compton-recoil electron with a gaseous electron tracker and determines the incoming direction of each gamma-ray photon; thus, it has a strong background rejection power and yields a better angular resolution than classical Compton cameras. Here, we study ETCC events in which the Compton-recoil electrons do not deposit all energies to the electron tracker but escape and hit the surrounding pixel scintillator array (PSA). We developed an analysis method for this untapped class of events and applied it to laboratory and simulation data. We found that the energy spectrum obtained from the simulation agreed with that of the actual data within a factor of 1.2. We then evaluated the detector performance using the simulation data. The angular resolution for the new-class events was found to be twice as good as in the previous study at the energy range 1.0--2.0~MeV, where both analyses overlap. We also found that the total effective area is dominated by the contribution of the double-hit events above an energy of 1.5~MeV. Notably, applying this new method extends the sensitive energy range with the ETCC from 0.2--2.1 MeV in the previous studies to up to 3.5~MeV. Adjusting the PSA dynamic range should improve the sensitivity in even higher energy gamma-rays. Abstract

The PHENIX experiment has performed a systematic study of identified charged-hadron ($\pi^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $p$, $\bar{p}$) production at midrapidity in $p$$+$Al, $^3$He$+$Au, Cu$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV and U$+$U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=193$ GeV. Identified charged-hadron invariant transverse-momentum ($p_T$) and transverse-mass ($m_T$) spectra are presented and interpreted in terms of radially expanding thermalized systems. The particle ratios of $K/\pi$ and $p/\pi$ have been measured in different centrality ranges of large (Cu$+$Au, U$+$U) and small ($p$$+$Al, $^3$He$+$Au) collision systems. The values of $K/\pi$ ratios measured in all considered collision systems were found to be consistent with those measured in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. However the values of $p/\pi$ ratios measured in large collision systems reach the values of $\approx0.6$, which is $\approx2$ times larger than in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. These results can be qualitatively understood in terms of the baryon enhancement expected from hadronization by recombination. Identified charged-hadron nuclear-modification factors ($R_{AB}$) are also presented. Enhancement of proton $R_{AB}$ values over meson $R_{AB}$ values was observed in central $^3$He$+$Au, Cu$+$Au, and U$+$U collisions. The proton $R_{AB}$ values measured in $p$$+$Al collision system were found to be consistent with $R_{AB}$ values of $\phi$, $\pi^\pm$, $K^\pm$, and $\pi^0$ mesons, which may indicate that the size of the system produced in $p$$+$Al collisions is too small for recombination to cause a noticeable increase in proton production., Comment: 480 authors from 78 institutions, 18 pages, 6 tables, 16 figures. v2 is version accepted for publication in Physical Review C. Abstract

Unconventional superconductivity often couples to other electronic orders in a cooperative or competing fashion. Identifying external stimuli that tune between these two limits is of fundamental interest. Here, we show that strain perpendicular to the copper-oxide planes couples directly to the competing interaction between charge stripe order and superconductivity in La$_{1.88}$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ (LSCO). Compressive $c$-axis pressure amplifies stripe order within the superconducting state, while having no impact on the normal state. By contrast, strain dramatically diminishes the magnetic field enhancement of stripe order in the superconducting state. These results suggest that $c$-axis strain acts as tuning parameter of the competing interaction between charge stripe order and superconductivity. This interpretation implies a uniaxial pressure-induced ground state in which the competition between charge order and superconductivity is reduced.

Abstract

From lithium-ion batteries to high-temperature superconductors, oxide materials have been widely used in electronic devices. However, demands of future technologies require materials beyond oxides, as anion chemistries distinct from oxygen can expand the palette of mechanisms and phenomena, to achieve superior functionalities. Examples include nitride-based wide bandgap semiconductors and halide perovskite solar cells, with MAPbBr3 being a representation revolutionizing photovoltaics research. Here, we demonstrate magnetoelectric behaviour in quasi-two-dimensional halides (K,Rb)3Mn2Cl7 through simultaneous thermal control of electric and magnetic polarizations by exploiting a polar-to-antipolar displacive transition. Additionally, our calculations indicate a possible polarization switching path including a strong magnetoelectric coupling, indicating halides can be excellent platforms to design future multiferroic and ferroelectric devices. We expect our findings to broaden the exploration of multiferroics to non-oxide materials and open access to novel mechanisms, beyond conventional electric/magnetic control, for coupling ferroic orders., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Superconducting (SC) tips for scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) can enhance a wide range of surface science studies because they offer exquisite energy resolution, allow the study of Josephson tunneling, or provide spatial contrast based on the local interaction of the SC tip with the sample. The appeal of a SC tip is also practical. An SC gap can be used to characterize and optimize the noise of a low-temperature apparatus. Unlike typical samples, SC tips can be made with less ordered materials, such as from SC polycrystalline wires or by coating a normal metal tip with a superconductor. Those recipes either require additional laboratory infrastructure or are carried out in ambient conditions, leaving an oxidized tip behind. Here, we revisit the vacuum cleaving of an Nb wire to prepare fully gapped tips in an accessible one-step procedure. To show their utility, we measure the SC gap of Nb on Au(111) to determine the base temperature of our microscope and to optimize its RF filtering. The deliberate coating of the Nb tip with Au fully suppresses the SC gap and we show how sputtering with Ar$^{+}$ ions can be used to gradually recover the gap, promising tunability for tailored SC gaps sizes., Comment: 6 pages, 3 Figures

Abstract

Abstract Mixed‐phenotype acute leukemia (MPAL) with FLT3‐TKD mutations is a rare and challenging subtype of leukemia. Effective management strategies are crucial for improving patient outcomes. A 31‐year‐old man with FLT3‐TKD‐mutated MPAL achieved hematological remission through the JALSG ALL202‐O protocol and gilteritinib, followed by cord blood transplantation (CBT). Post‐transplant complications included adenovirus‐induced hemorrhagic cystitis, managed with bladder irrigation and ribavirin, and engraftment failure, necessitating a second CBT on Day 35. Subsequent adenoviral conjunctivitis resolved with vidarabine. The patient achieved neutrophil engraftment by Day 76 and was discharged on Day 173 without relapse. This case highlights the importance of vigilant supportive care and tailored therapy in managing MPAL with FLT3 mutations, especially in the context of post‐transplant complications.

Abstract DPANN is a widespread and diverse group of archaea characterized by their small size, reduced genome, limited metabolic pathways, and symbiotic existence. Known DPANN species are predominantly obligate ectosymbionts that depend on their host for proliferation. The structural and molecular details of host recognition, host-DPANN intercellular communication, and host adaptation in response to DPANN attachment remain unknown. Here, we use electron cryotomography (cryo-ET) to show that the Microcaldus variisymbioticus ARM-1 may interact with its host, Metallosphaera javensis AS-7 through intercellular proteinaceous nanotubes. Combining cryo-ET and sub-tomogram averaging, we show the in situ architectures of host and DPANN S-layers and the structures of the nanotubes in their primed and extended states. In addition, comparative proteomics and genomic analyses identified host proteomic changes in response to DPANN attachment. These results provide insights into the structural basis of host-DPANN communication and deepen our understanding of the host ectosymbiotic relationships.

Abstract Purpose Total joint arthroplasty (TJA) has often been used to treat thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) osteoarthritis (OA). However, guidelines for the CMC prosthesis shape remain unclear. This study aimed to identify the effective shape of a ball-and-socket prosthesis in restoring the range of thumb motion after TJA. Methods The participants were 10 healthy young adult men (22–32 years; 26.8 ± 3.57 [mean ± SD]). CT scans were performed in eight static limb positions during abduction and flexion. We defined three design variables (offset R, height H, and neck rotation angle Φ) as the variables that determine the basic shape of the ball-and-socket prosthesis. The ideal values of these design variables were examined based on the results of a 3D motion analysis, which evaluated the change in the posture of the first metacarpal (r, h, and φ corresponding to R, H, and Φ, respectively) relative to the center of rotation (COR) during abduction and flexion. We also simulated the effect of these design variables on the range of thumb motion after TJA using 3D CAD. Results We found that the values of r and h averaged over all limb positions were 6.92 ± 1.60 mm and 51.02 ± 1.67 mm, respectively, showing that these values remained constant regardless of limb position. In contrast, φ changed significantly. The simulation results indicated that Φ affected the range of thumb motion after TJA, and Φ = 0° relatively reproduced all limb positions compared to other values. Conclusion Our results suggested that the desirable values of R and H were the average of r and h over several limb positions and that Φ = 0° was effective in restoring the range of thumb motion after TJA. Our results will provide surgeons with new guidelines for selecting a prosthesis.

Abstract Objectives Poor cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and high body mass index (BMI) increased the risk of developing metabolic Syndrome (MetS) mostly in Caucasians. However, the sex-specific combined association of CRF and BMI on MetS considering health-related behaviors has yet to be thoroughly examined in Japanese. This study aims to investigate the sex-specific independent and combined associations of CRF and BMI with MetS in middle-aged Japanese adults. Methods 421 participants were included in this cross-sectional study. CRF was estimated using a submaximal cycle ergometer. CRF and BMI were respectively divided into three categories according to tertile distribution. MetS was diagnosed based on five risk factors: waist circumference, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, blood pressure, and fasting glucose. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate independent and combined association of CRF and BMI with MetS. Results Results showed that 154 (57.5%) and 70 (45.8%) of men and women had MetS, respectively. Compared to men with lower CRF or higher BMI, men with middle and higher CRF or middle and lower BMI were less likely to have MetS. Compared with ‘unfit and higher BMI’ group, ‘unfit and lower BMI’, ‘fit and higher BMI’, and ‘fit and lower BMI’ groups in men showed statistically significant decreased prevalences of MetS. However, no significant associations were found in women. Conclusions This study found significant independent and combined associations of CRF and BMI with MetS only in men, but not in women. However, prospective studies are warranted to confirm sex-specific associations of CRF and BMI with MetS.

32. Does Character-level Information Always Improve DRS-based Semantic Parsing?

Abstract

Even in the era of massive language models, it has been suggested that character-level representations improve the performance of neural models. The state-of-the-art neural semantic parser for Discourse Representation Structures uses character-level representations, improving performance in the four languages (i.e., English, German, Dutch, and Italian) in the Parallel Meaning Bank dataset. However, how and why character-level information improves the parser's performance remains unclear. This study provides an in-depth analysis of performance changes by order of character sequences. In the experiments, we compare F1-scores by shuffling the order and randomizing character sequences after testing the performance of character-level information. Our results indicate that incorporating character-level information does not improve the performance in English and German. In addition, we find that the parser is not sensitive to correct character order in Dutch. Nevertheless, performance improvements are observed when using character-level information., Comment: 10 pages.
