7. Rapid Quenching of Molten Salts as an Approach for the Coordination Characterization of Corrosion Products

Abstract

AbstractA new apparatus was built to rapidly cool molten salts in liquid argon to prevent contamination during quenching and enable new insight into the structure in the liquid state. To test the applicability of the apparatus, several industrially relevant chloride salt compositions were first melted, rapidly solidified, and then characterized. The design proved applicable for the rapid quenching of molten salt. Furthermore, the structure of the apparatus prevented exposure of the rapidly quenched salt to impurities (humidity, oxygen, etc.). X-ray diffraction of salt specimens cooled with and without liquid argon showed differences including a structure further from the expected stoichiometric equilibrium with rapid cooling. Of particular interest is the chemical state of metallic impurities, and this may be probed using electron paramagnetic resonance.

Abstract

Solution-processed CdTe solar cells using CdTe nanocrystal (NC) ink may offer an economically viable route for large-scale manufacturing. Here we design a new CdCl3--capped CdTe NC ink by taking advantage of novel surface chemistry. In this ink, CdCl3- ligands act as surface ligands, sintering promoters, and dopants. Our solution chemistry allows obtaining very thin continuous layers of high-quality CdTe which is challenging for traditional vapor transport methods. Using benign solvents, in air, and without additional CdCl2 treatment, we obtain a well-sintered CdTe absorber layer from the new ink and demonstrate thin-film solar cells with power conversion efficiency over 10%, a record efficiency for sub-400 nm thick CdTe absorber layer. Abstract

Solutionprocessing of photovoltaic semiconducting layers offersthe potential for drastic cost reduction through improved materialsutilization and high device throughput. One compelling solution-basedprocessing strategy utilizes semiconductor layers produced by sinteringnanocrystals into large-grain semiconductors at relatively low temperatures.Using n-ZnO/p-CdTe as a model system, we fabricate sintered CdTe nanocrystalsolar cells processed at 350 °C with power conversion efficiencies(PCE) as high as 12.3%. JSCof over 25mA cm–2are achieved, which are comparable or higherthan those achieved using traditional, close-space sublimated CdTe.We find that the VOCcan be substantiallyincreased by applying forward bias for short periods of time. Capacitancemeasurements as well as intensity- and temperature-dependent analysisindicate that the increased VOCis likelydue to relaxation of an energetic barrier at the ITO/CdTe interface.
