Abstract: The ternary intermetallic Ce16Ru8In37 was synthesized by arc-melting from elemental Ce, Ru, and In under an argon atmosphere. The crystal structure of Ce16Ru8In37 was determined from the single-crystal X-ray diffraction data: a =4.7451(1)Å, b =9.3518(2)Å, c =32.6162(7)Å; space group Immm, Z =1. The architecture of the crystal structure of Ce16Ru8In37 is based on CeIn3 units with cubic Cu3Au-type and can be presented as consisting of two different slabs: CeIn3-like slab of composition Ce4In14.5 and a slab of composition Ce4Ru4In4. Abstract: Cerium ruthenium indides, Ce2Ru2In3 and Ce3Ru2In2, were synthesized from the pure elements by arc-melting. Both structures present a site exchange variant of a new structure type with different occupation of one crystallographic site: space group Pnma, Z =4, oP28, with cell parameters a =17.7054(4) Å, b =4.7144(1) Å, c =7.4072(1) Å for Ce2Ru2In3, and a =17.394(2) Å, b =4.9073(6) Å, c =7.669(1) Å for Ce3Ru2In2 at room temperature. In the structures there are eight extremely short Ce–Ru contacts per unit cell: Ce1–Ru1=2.3225(8) Å, Ce1–Ru2=2.3681(8) Å in Ce2Ru2In3, and Ce1–Ru1=2.2345(9) Å, Ce3–Ru2=2.2811(9) Å in Ce3Ru2In2. Such contacts cause considerable distortion of coordination polyhedra of all atoms and reduce cell parameter a by 1Å when compared to the parent NdRh2Sn4 structure. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A new ternary intermetallic compound with stoichiometry CePt2In7 has been found. It crystallizes in the space group I4/mmm and represents a novel structure type (Pearson symbol tI20, a =4.6093(2)Å, c =21.627(1)Å, Z =2). Crystal structure of CePt2In7 was determined from X-ray powder pattern of a four-phase sample. Rietveld refinement resulted in R p =0.038, R wp =0.050, R exp =0.032, S =1.25. CePt2In7 is a new member of the family of inhomogeneous linear structures built of the fragments of AuCu3 and PtHg2 parent structure types. Coordination polyhedra are a cuboctahedron for cerium, a deformed cube for platinum, and a cuboctahedron or a polyhedron derived from cuboctahedron for indium. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The crystal structure of the new ternary intermetallic compound Ce3Ru2In3 was investigated by X-ray single crystal diffraction method. Abstract: Ternary intermetallic CeRu0.88In2 was synthesized by arc-melting from elemental Ce, Ru, and In under an argon atmosphere. The crystal structure of CeRu0.88In2 was determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data: a =4.5449(11)Å, b =10.014(2)Å and c =7.6854(10)Å; space group Cmcm, Z =4, MgCuAl2 type. The structure is formed of three-dimensional framework of [Ru0.88In2], in the infinite pentagonal channels of which Ce atoms are disposed. Similar to the other known ternary compounds of the Ce–Ru–In system, CeRu0.88In2 exhibits unusually short Ce–Ru contact equal to 2.530(4)Å, which in addition is the shortest one in the raw of LTIn2 compounds with MgCuAl2 structure type (L=La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Yb; T=Rh, Pd, Au). Abstract: Intermetallics RE 5Ru3Al2 (RE =La, Ce, Pr) were prepared by arc melting of the elemental components with subsequent annealing at 820K. The crystal structures were determined from single-crystal (Ce5Ru3Al2, Pr5Ru3Al2) and powder (La5Ru3Al2) X-ray diffraction at room temperature. The compounds belong to new structural types: space group R3, Z =6, a =13.9270(3)Å, c =8.3260(2)Å for Ce5Ru3Al2 and space group I213, Z=4, a =9.95419(6)Å and 9.8084(3)Å for La5Ru3Al2 and Pr5Ru3Al2, respectively. The trigonal structure of Ce5Ru3Al2 is a distorted variant of the cubic La5Ru3Al2 and Pr5Ru3Al2 structures. An interesting feature of the Ce5Ru3Al2 are the short (2.5299(16)Å and 2.5969(15)Å) Ce–Ru distances. Magnetic measurements revealed the Pauli paramagnetic behavior in La5Ru3Al2 and the Curie–Weiss paramagnetism in Pr5Ru3Al2. The latter compound likely exhibits a kind of magnetically ordered state below 24K. In turn, Ce5Ru3Al2 remains paramagnetic down to 4.2K and shows signs of mixed valence states of Ce ions. Electrical resistivity measurements indicated simple metallic conductivity in La5Ru3Al2 and Pr5Ru3Al2, and a more complex metallic behavior in Ce5Ru3Al2. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
