44. Binaural interaction of bone-conducted auditory brainstem responses.

Abstract

Bone-conducted auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) elicited by monoaural stimulation are very useful for evaluating hearing in children with congenital atresia of both ears. In a previous study of sound lateralization in children with congenital atresia of both ears, using bilateral bone-conducted stimuli, we found that most of the children could sufficiently retain binaural hearing ability in terms of both intensity and time differences. In this study we attempted to record bilateral bone-conducted ABRs in normal subjects in order to explore binaural interaction objectively. The study revealed that binaural interaction exists in bone-conducted ABRs. This can be taken as neurophysiological evidence that sound lateralization can be detected by children with bilateral microtia and atresia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

46. Nonlinear optical properties of Sn+ion-implanted silica glass

Abstract

The absolute value of the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility, ¦χ(3)¦, of Sn+ion-implanted silica glass was found to be ∼ 10−6esu. This value is as large as those reported for semiconductor-doped glasses. Silica glass substrates were implanted with Sn+ions at an acceleration energy of 400 keV to a dose of 2 × 1017ions/cm2at room temperature. Metallic Sn microcrystallites of 4–20 nm in diameter were found to be embedded in the silica glass matrix. The average volume fraction of the Sn microcrystallites was evaluated to be 28%. ¦χ(3)¦and the imaginary part of the dielectric function, Im ϵ, had peaks at the same wavelength of 500 nm owing to surface plasmon resonance. The peak width of ¦χ(3)¦was nearly half of that of Im ϵ, which can be explained by an effective medium theory.

47. Application of rigid polyurethane foam to the energy–absorbing steering column

Abstract

Rigid polyurethane foam has shown a remarkable ability to absorb energy under compressive load. This foam has been applied to the automobile steering column by forming it into a cylindrical shape and placing it inside the outer pipe of the column. A conical indenter, with a diameter larger than the minimum diameter of the foam body, is fixed to the end of the inner pipe, and it acts to compress the foam towards the inner wall. This provides the steering column with an excellent impact absorbability, which fully satisfies the US Motor Vehicle Safety Standard MVSS203.
