Abstract

The aim of this work is to develop a low-overhead, low-cost built-in test for Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS). The proposed method relies on processing the Impulse Response (IR) through trained neural networks, in order to predict a set of MEMS performances, which are otherwise very expensive to measure using the conventional test approach. The use of neural networks allows us to employ a low-dimensional IR signature, which results in a compact built-in test. A MEMS structure combining electro-thermal excitation and piezoresistive sensing was chosen as our case study. A behavioral model of this structure was built using Matlab for the purpose of the experiment. The results demonstrate that the neural network predictions are in excellent agreement with the simulation results of the behavioral model.

8. AC–DC converter with unity power factor and minimum harmonic content of line current: design considerations

Abstract

The paper describes some important design considerations in developing a variable three-phase AC–DC converter with unity power factor and the minimum harmonic content of the line current using boost converter topology. The design details of expanding a single-phase converter into a three-phase system are presented. The article also describes the major problems encountered in carrying out such essential modifications, together with their practical solution. A detailed circuit design is included. The prototype circuit was tested for both resistive and inductive loads. The results of operating the converter with a typical DC motor load are also presented.

Abstract

Transmissibility characteristics of passively-suspended seats are discussed. Transmissibility of the developed actively-suspended seat, requested at the start of the development, is presented. Control hardware and software of the seat are briefly described. Laboratory testing procedures with 2-DOF dummy and their results on both passively- and actively-suspended seats are demonstrated. On-road measurements of suspended seats with driver on a truck were carried out. Results indicated active involvement of the person, sitting on any suspended seat, in the control of his motion not only on bad tracks but on good roads as well. General approach for selecting optimal seat transmissibility based on theoretical 1-DOF models without considering the role of seat occupant is demonstrated to be dubious. Laboratory tests of the actively-suspended seat with real persons are therefore prepared. Test rig with 6- DOF, on which the experiments will be carried out, is briefly described.
