One of the key phenomena that determine the fluorescence of nanocrystals is the nonradiative Auger-Meitner recombination of excitons. This nonradiative rate affects the nanocrystals' fluorescence intensity, excited state lifetime, and quantum yield. Whereas most of the above properties can be directly measured, the quantum yield is the most difficult to assess. Here we place semiconductor nanocrystals inside a tunable plasmonic nanocavity with subwavelength spacing and modulate their radiative de-excitation rate by changing the cavity size. This allows us to determine absolute values of their fluorescence quantum yield under specific excitation conditions. Moreover, as expected considering the enhanced Auger-Meitner rate for higher multiple excited states, increasing the excitation rate reduces the quantum yield of the nanocrystals.

We report on SwissSPAD2, an image sensor with 512×512 photon-counting pixels, each comprising a single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD), a 1-bit memory, and a gating mechanism capable of turning the SPAD on and off, with a skew of 250ps and 344ps, respectively, for a minimum duration of 5.75ns. The sensor is designed to achieve a frame rate of up to 97,700 binary frames per second and sub-40ps gate shifts. By synchronizing it with a pulsed laser and using multiple successive overlapping gates, one can reconstruct a molecule's fluorescent response with picosecond temporal resolution. Thanks to the sensor's number of pixels (the largest to date) and the fully integrated gated operation, SwissSPAD2 enables widefield FLIM with an all-solid-state solution and at relatively high frame rates. This was demonstrated with preliminary results on organic dyes and semiconductor quantum dots using both decay fitting and phasor analysis. Furthermore, pixels with an exceptionally low dark count rate and high photon detection probability enable uniform and high quality imaging of biologically relevant fluorescent samples stained with multiple dyes. While future versions will feature the addition of microlenses and optimize firmware speed, our results open the way to low-cost alternatives to commercially available scientific time-resolved imagers.

We investigated the thermal-history dependence of physical properties in a quenched Fe5−xGeTe2 (x ∼ 0.16) single crystal by measuring magnetization (M), electrical resistivity (ρ), Seebeck coefficient (S), and thermal conductivity (κ) as a function of temperature (T). The results reveal anomalies in these physical quantities around various transition points: ferromagnetic (TC ∼ 310–300 K), helimagnetic (TH ∼ 275 K), charge ordering (TCO ∼ 165 K), spin-reorientation (T* ∼ 100–120 K), and a Fermi-liquid (FL) phase below TL ∼ 35 K. Using power-law fitting, the M(T) analysis near TC shows that Fe moments become primarily itinerant after thermal cycling. The ρ(T) results indicate inherent residual stresses in the crystal that alter with thermal cycling, influencing ferromagnetic domain formations within grain boundaries. The system exhibits a strongly correlated FL behavior at low temperatures, which ceases above TL due to spin fluctuations. In the T-range of T* ≤ T ≤ TCO, ρ(T) and S(T) analyses suggest significant electronic band structure modifications with multiband effects. The κ(T) data indicate phonon-dominated heat transport in the crystal, with a phonon behavior influenced by inherent lattice strains following initial thermal cycles, as evidenced by the decreased phonon peak height at low temperatures. We developed membrane voltage nanosensors that are based on inorganic semiconductor nanoparticles. We provide here a feasibility study for their utilization. We use a rationally designed peptide to functionalize the nanosensors, imparting them with the ability to self-insert into a lipid membrane with a desired orientation. Once inserted, these nanosensors could sense membrane potential via the quantum confined Stark effect, with a single-particle sensitivity. With further improvements, these nanosensors could potentially be used for simultaneous recording of action potentials from multiple neurons in a large field of view over a long duration and for recording electrical signals on the nanoscale, such as across one synapse.
