Spinal cord injuries (SCIs) frequently occur in combination with other major organ injuries, such as traumatic brain injury (TBI) and injuries to the chest, abdomen, and musculoskeletal system (e.g., extremity, pelvic, and spine fractures). However, the effects of appendicular fractures on SCI recovery are poorly understood. We investigated whether the presence of SCI-concurrent appendicular fractures is predictive of a less robust SCI recovery. Patients enrolled in the Transforming Research and Clinical Knowledge in SCI (TRACK-SCI) prospective cohort study were identified and included in this secondary analysis study. Inclusion criteria resulted in 147 patients, consisting of 120 with isolated SCIs and 27 with concomitant appendicular fracture. The primary outcome was American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) Impairment Scale (AIS) neurological grades at hospital discharge. Secondary outcomes included hospital length of stay, intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay, and AIS grade improvement during hospitalization. Multivariable binomial logistical regression analyses assessed whether SCI-concomitant appendicular fractures associate with SCI function and secondary outcomes. These analyses were adjusted for age, gender, injury severity, and non-fracture polytrauma. Appendicular fractures were associated with more severe AIS grades at hospital discharge, though covariate adjustments diminished statistical significance of this effect. Notably, non-fracture injuries to the chest and abdomen were influential covariates. Secondary analyses suggested that appendicular fractures also increased hospital length of stay. Our study indicated that SCI-associated polytrauma is important for predicting SCI functional outcomes. Further statistical evaluation is required to disentangle the effects of appendicular fractures, non-fracture solid organ injury, and SCI physiology to improve health outcomes among SCI patients.

Objective: To assess the association between polycystic ovary syndrome and pancreatic cancer in Taiwan. Methods: We used the 2013–2020 claims data of Taiwan National Health Insurance Program. A case‐control study was performed, including female subjects 20 years or older with and without pancreatic cancer. Cases comprised female subjects diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, identified based on diagnosis codes. Controls were selected from female subjects without pancreatic cancer and matched to cases on age and comorbidities. Polycystic ovary syndrome was identified through diagnosis codes. A conditional logistic regression model was used to assess the association between polycystic ovary syndrome and pancreatic cancer, with results presented as odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: This case‐control study included 12,466 cases with pancreatic cancer and 49,864 matched controls. The proportions of polycystic ovary syndrome were 2.6% among cases with pancreatic cancer and 1.4% among controls without pancreatic cancer (p < 0.001). After controlling for confounding factors, the conditional logistical regression model revealed a statistically significant association between polycystic ovary syndrome and pancreatic cancer, with an OR of 1.38 (95% CI = 1.21–1.59, p < 0.001). Conclusion: This case‐control study reveals that there is a statistically significant association between polycystic ovary syndrome and pancreatic cancer. Objective Methods Results Conclusion The aim of the cohort research was to study the association between chronic prostatitis and the probability of herpes zoster in Taiwan.Using the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) of Taiwan, we selected male persons newly diagnosed with chronic prostatitis aged 20–84 years between 2013 and 2020. These male persons were then matched with a non‐prostatitis group who did not have a diagnosis of prostatitis by using 1:1 propensity score matching on age and relevant comorbidities. All participants were observed either until a new diagnosis of herpes zoster was noted or until the completion of the study period in 2020. Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was employed to study the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for the risk of herpes zoster associated with chronic prostatitis.A total of 69 239 participants with chronic prostatitis and 69 239 participants with non‐prostatitis were included in the analysis. The incidence rate of herpes zoster was higher in participants with chronic prostatitis compared to the non‐prostatitis group (8.03 per 1000 person‐years for chronic prostatitis group versus 4.74 per 1000 person‐years for non‐prostatitis group, incidence rate ratio = 1.69, and 95%CI = 1.59–1.81). After adjusting for co‐variables, participants with chronic prostatitis were found to have a higher risk of developing herpes zoster compared to the non‐prostatitis group (adjusted HR = 1.69, 95%CI = 1.59–1.81, and p < 0.001).This cohort research suggests that people with chronic prostatitis may have a greater risk of developing herpes zoster compared to the non‐prostatitis group in Taiwan. Preventive strategies, such as the administration of the herpes zoster vaccine, might be beneficial in people with chronic prostatitis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Coronary artery disease (CAD) and herpes zoster represent significant health burdens, and their potential interrelationships remain understudied. This cohort study aimed to address the existing knowledge gap by systematically exploring whether people with CAD are at increased risk for developing herpes zoster. Methods Using the 2006–2015 claims data of the National Health Insurance Program in Taiwan, we identified participants aged ≥20 years with a new diagnosis of CAD as the CAD group. We selected sex- and age-matched participants without CAD as the non-CAD group. The incidence rate of herpes zoster at the end of follow-up was calculated. A multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to measure the hazard ratio and 95% CI for herpes zoster associated with covariables. Results The overall incidence rate of herpes zoster was 1.14-fold greater in the CAD group as compared with the non-CAD group (6.52 vs 5.74 per 1000 person-years; 95% CI, 1.08–1.20). After controlling for covariables, the adjusted hazard ratio of herpes zoster was 1.21 (95% CI, 1.14–1.27) for the CAD group as compared with the non-CAD group. Conclusions This cohort study provides valuable insights into the potential association between CAD and the risk of developing herpes zoster. The findings may have implications for preventive strategies of herpes zoster in people with CAD. Objective. To investigate the potential association between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and colon polyps in Taiwan. Methods. We utilized 2006–2015 claims data of the Taiwan National Health Insurance Program as a data source. A case-control study was conducted, involving individuals 20 years or older with and without colon polyps. Cases comprised individuals diagnosed with colon polyps, identified through diagnosis codes. Controls were selected from individuals without colon polyps, matched to cases based on sex, age, and comorbidities. NAFLD was identified based on diagnosis codes. The logistic regression model with odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) was employed to assess the association between NAFLD and colon polyps. Results. The study included 16,890 cases with colon polyps and 67,560 matched controls without colon polyps. The mean age was 57 years old and about 61% of study subjects were males. Among cases with colon polyps, 1.0% had a diagnosis of NAFLD, whereas only 0.4% exhibited NAFLD in the control group. After adjustment for confounding variables, a multivariable logistic regression model revealed a statistically significant association between NAFLD and colon polyps, with an odds ratio of 2.32 (95% CI = 1.91–2.82). Conclusion. This case-control study suggests a positive association between NAFLD and colon polyps. Background: Non-cancer drugs are currently being repurposed for cancer treatment. Mounting evidence highlights the influence of calcium channels on tumorigenesis and progression. Hence, inhibition of calcium signaling may be a promising cancer treatment strategy. Objective: In this study, we aimed to examine whether calcium channel blockers (CCBs) affect the efficacy of epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Design: We conducted a retrospective analysis. Methods: In this study, conducted between January 2009 and June 2021, patients with NSCLC treated with erlotinib, or gefitinib for at least 1 week were enrolled and divided into 2 groups: CCBs-/EGFR-TKIs+ and CCBs+/EGFR-TKIs+, depending on whether they received CCB therapy. Progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were determined as the primary and secondary endpoints, respectively. Results: The estimated median PFS and OS for the CCBs-/EGFR-TKIs+group were 7.70 and 12.17 months, respectively, and they were significantly different from those of the CCBs+/EGFR-TKIs+ group (10.43 and 18.07 months, respectively). CCB use was associated with improved PFS (adjusted hazard ratios [HR] 0.77, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.61-0.98; P = .035) and OS (adjusted HR 0.66, 95% CI: 0.51-0.84; P < .001). Conclusion: Calcium channels have been implicated in cancer pathogenesis. Our findings revealed the potential additive anticancer effects of CCBs when used concomitantly with EGFR-TKIs. However, study limitations, including the retrospective nature and small number of patients, necessitate large-scale prospective studies on the therapeutic potential of CCB as an adjunctive therapy with EGFR-TKIs in patients with NSCLC.
