Search

The Radar Echo Telescope for Cosmic Rays (RET-CR), a pathfinder instrument for the radar echo method of ultrahigh energy (UHE) neutrino detection, was initially deployed near Summit Station, Greenland, in May 2023. After a 4 week commissioning period, 9 days of data were taken before the instrument went offline. In this article, we describe the instrument as it was deployed, and the initial performance of the detector. We show that the technical aspects of running a radar based particle cascade detector in the ice have been demonstrated. Analysis of the 2023 data informed improvements that were incorporated into the May-August 2024 deployment, which has just concluded at time of writing. We have developed an in-situ index of refraction profile n(z) for cold polar ice, using the transit times of radio signals broadcast from an englacial transmitter to 2-5 km distant radio-frequency receivers, deployed at depths up to 200 m. For propagation through a non-uniform medium, Maxwell's equations generally admit two ray propagation solutions from a given transmitter, corresponding to a direct path (D) and a refracted or reflected path (R); the measured D vs. R timing differences (dt(D,R)) are determined by the refractive index profile. We constrain n(z) near South Pole, where the Askaryan Radio Array (ARA) neutrino observatory is located, by simulating D and R ray paths via ray tracing and comparing simulations to measured dt(D,R) values. Using previous ice density data as a proxy for n(z), we demonstrate that our data strongly favors a glaciologically-motivated three-phase densification model rather than a single exponential scale height model. Effective volume simulations for a detector of ARA station antenna depths yield a 14\% increase in neutrino sensitivity over a range of $10^{17} - 10^{21}$ eV using the three-phase model compared to a single exponential.

3C84 is a nearby radio source with a complex total intensity structure, showing linear polarisation and spectral patterns. A detailed investigation of the central engine region necessitates the use of VLBI above the hitherto available maximum frequency of 86GHz. Using ultrahigh resolution VLBI observations at the highest available frequency of 228GHz, we aim to directly detect compact structures and understand the physical conditions in the compact region of 3C84. We used EHT 228GHz observations and, given the limited (u,v)-coverage, applied geometric model fitting to the data. We also employed quasi-simultaneously observed, multi-frequency VLBI data for the source in order to carry out a comprehensive analysis of the core structure. We report the detection of a highly ordered, strong magnetic field around the central, SMBH of 3C84. The brightness temperature analysis suggests that the system is in equipartition. We determined a turnover frequency of $\nu_m=(113\pm4)$GHz, a corresponding synchrotron self-absorbed magnetic field of $B_{SSA}=(2.9\pm1.6)$G, and an equipartition magnetic field of $B_{eq}=(5.2\pm0.6)$G. Three components are resolved with the highest fractional polarisation detected for this object ($m_\textrm{net}=(17.0\pm3.9)$%). The positions of the components are compatible with those seen in low-frequency VLBI observations since 2017-2018. We report a steeply negative slope of the spectrum at 228GHz. We used these findings to test models of jet formation, propagation, and Faraday rotation in 3C84. The findings of our investigation into different flow geometries and black hole spins support an advection-dominated accretion flow in a magnetically arrested state around a rapidly rotating supermassive black hole as a model of the jet-launching system in the core of 3C84. High precision mapping of H2O megamaser emission from active galaxies has revealed more than a dozen Keplerian H2O maser disks, which enable a ~4% uncertainty estimate of the Hubble constant as well as providing accurate masses for the central black holes. These disks often have well-defined inner and outer boundaries of maser emission on sub-parsec scales. In order to better understand the physical conditions that determine the inner and outer radii of a maser disk, we examine the distributions of gas density and X-ray heating rate in a warped molecular disk described by a power-law surface density profile. For a suitable choice of the disk mass, we find that the outer radius R_out of the maser disk predicted from our model can match the observed value, with R_out mainly determined by the maximum heating rate or the minimum density for efficient maser action, depending on the combination of the Eddington ratio, black hole mass, and disk mass. Our analysis also indicates that the inner radius for maser action is comparable to the dust sublimation radius, suggesting that dust may play a role in determining the inner radius of a maser disk. Starting from the observing campaign in April 2018, the Greenland Telescope (GLT) has been added as a new station of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) array. Visibilities on baselines to the GLT, particularly in the North-South direction, potentially provide valuable new constraints for the modeling and imaging of sources such as M87*. The GLT's location at high Northern latitudes adds unique challenges to its calibration strategies. Additionally, the performance of the GLT was not optimal during the 2018 observations due to it being only partially commissioned at the time. This document describes the steps taken to estimate the various parameters (and their uncertainties) required for the absolute flux calibration of the GLT data as part of the EHT. Corundum oxide Ti$_2$O$_3$ shows the metal-insulator transition around 400-600 K accompanying the nearest Ti$^{3+}$-Ti$^{3+}$ bond ($a_{1g}a_{1g}$ singlet state) formation along the $c$ axis. In order to clarify the hole-doping effect for the $a_{1g}a_{1g}$ singlet bond in Ti$_2$O$_3$, we investigated Ti $3d$ orbital anisotropy between corundum-type Ti$_2$O$_3$ and ilmenite-type MgTiO$_3$ using linear dichroism of soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy of the Ti $L_{2,3}$ edge. From the linear dichroic spectral weight in Mg$_y$Ti$_{2-y}$O$_3$, we confirmed that the $a_{1g}a_{1g}$ state is dominant not only in $y=0.01$ (almost Ti$_2$O$_3$), but also in $y = 0.29$, indicating that the Ti-Ti bond survives against a certain level of hole doping. In $y=0.63$ corresponding to 46% hole doping per Ti, the $3d$ orbital symmetry changes from $a_{1g}$ to $e_g^{\pi}$., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

To probe the cosmic particle flux at the highest energies, large volumes of dense material like ice have to be monitored. This can be achieved by exploiting the radio signal. In this work, we provide a macroscopic model to predict the radar echo signatures found when a radio signal is reflected from a cosmic-ray or neutrino-induced particle cascade propagating in a dense medium like ice. Its macroscopic nature allows for an energy independent run-time, taking less than 10 s for simulating a single scatter event. As a first application, we discuss basic signal properties and simulate the expected signal for the T-576 beam-test experiment at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. We find good signal strength agreement with the only observed radar echo from a high-energy particle cascade to date., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

The Askaryan Radio Array Station 1 (A1), the first among five autonomous stations deployed for the ARA experiment at the South Pole, is a unique ultra-high energy neutrino (UHEN) detector based on the Askaryan effect that uses Antarctic ice as the detector medium. Its 16 radio antennas (distributed across 4 strings, each with 2 Vertically Polarized (VPol), 2 Horizontally Polarized (HPol) receivers), and 2 strings of transmitting antennas (calibration pulsers, CPs), each with 1 VPol and 1 HPol channel, are deployed at depths less than 100 m within the shallow firn zone of the 2.8 km thick South Pole (SP) ice. We apply different methods to calibrate its Ice Ray Sampler second generation (IRS2) chip for timing offset and ADC-to-Voltage conversion factors using a known continuous wave input signal to the digitizer, and achieve a precision of sub-nanoseconds. We achieve better calibration for odd, compared to even samples, and also find that the HPols under-perform relative to the VPol channels. Our timing calibrated data is subsequently used to calibrate the ADC-to-Voltage conversion as well as precise antenna locations, as a precursor to vertex reconstruction. The calibrated data will then be analyzed for UHEN signals in the final step of data compression. The ability of A1 to scan the firn region of SP ice sheet will contribute greatly towards a 5-station analysis and will inform the design of the planned IceCube Gen-2 radio array., Comment: 10 pages

In the pursuit of the measurement of the still-elusive ultrahigh-energy (UHE) neutrino flux at energies of order EeV, detectors using the in-ice Askaryan radio technique have increasingly targeted lower trigger thresholds. This has led to improved trigger-level sensitivity to UHE neutrinos. Working with data collected by the Askaryan Radio Array (ARA), we search for neutrino candidates at the lowest threshold achieved to date, leading to improved analysis-level sensitivities. A neutrino search on a data set with 208.7~days of livetime from the reduced-threshold fifth ARA station is performed, achieving a 68\% analysis efficiency over all energies on a simulated mixed-composition neutrino flux with an expected background of $0.10_{-0.04}^{+0.06}$ events passing the analysis. We observe one event passing our analysis and proceed to set a neutrino flux limit using a Feldman-Cousins construction. We show that the improved trigger-level sensitivity can be carried through an analysis, motivating the Phased Array triggering technique for use in future radio-detection experiments. We also include a projection using all available data from this detector. Finally, we find that future analyses will benefit from studies of events near the surface to fully understand the background expected for a large-scale detector., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

We present a comprehensive study of CaCu$_3$Ru$_4$O$_{12}$ using bulk sensitive hard and soft x-ray spectroscopy combined with local-density approximation (LDA) + dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) calculations. Correlation effects on both the Cu and Ru ions can be observed. From the Cu $2p$ core level spectra we deduce the presence of magnetic Cu$^{2+}$ ions hybridized with a reservoir of itinerant electrons. The strong photon energy dependence of the valence band allows us to disentangle the Ru, Cu, and O contributions and thus to optimize the DMFT calculations. The calculated spin and charge susceptibilities show that the transition metal oxide CaCu$_3$Ru$_4$O$_{12}$ must be classified as a Kondo system and that the Kondo temperature is in the range of 500-1000 K., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. The Radar Echo Telescope for Cosmic Rays (RET-CR) is a recently initiated experiment designed to detect the englacial cascade of a cosmic-ray initiated air shower via in-ice radar, toward the goal of a full-scale, next-generation experiment to detect ultra high energy neutrinos in polar ice. For cosmic rays with a primary energy greater than 10 PeV, roughly 10% of an air-shower's energy reaches the surface of a high elevation ice-sheet ($\gtrsim$2 km) concentrated into a radius of roughly 10 cm. This penetrating shower core creates an in-ice cascade many orders of magnitude more dense than the preceding in-air cascade. This dense cascade can be detected via the radar echo technique, where transmitted radio is reflected from the ionization deposit left in the wake of the cascade. RET-CR will test the radar echo method in nature, with the in-ice cascade of a cosmic-ray initiated air-shower serving as a test beam. We present the projected event rate and sensitivity based upon a three part simulation using CORSIKA, GEANT4, and RadioScatter. RET-CR expects $\sim$1 radar echo event per day.

The proposed IceCube-Gen2 (ICG2) seeks to instrument ~500 sq. km of Antarctic ice near the geographic South Pole with radio antennas, in order to observe the highest energy (E>1 EeV) neutrinos in the Universe. To this end, ICG2 will use the impulsive radio-frequency (RF) signal produced by neutrino interactions in polar ice caps. In such experiments, rare single event candidates must be unambiguously separated from background; to date, signal identification strategies primarily reject thermal noise and anthropogenic backgrounds. Here, we consider the possibility that fake neutrino signals may also be naturally generated via the 'triboelectric effect'. This broadly includes any process in which force applied at a boundary layer results in displacement of surface charge, generating a potential difference {\Delta}V. Wind blowing over granular surfaces such as snow can induce such a {\Delta}V, with subsequent discharge. Discharges over nanosecond-timescales can then lead to RF emissions at characteristic MHz-GHz frequencies. We find that such backgrounds are evident in the several neutrino experiments considered, and are generally characterized by: a) a threshold wind velocity which likely depends on the experimental signal trigger threshold and layout; for the experiments considered herein, this value is typically O(10 m/s), b) frequency spectra generally shifted to the low-end of the frequency regime to which current radio experiments are typically sensitive (100-200 MHz), c) for the strongest background signals, an apparent preference for discharges from above-surface structures, although the presence of more isotropic, lower amplitude triboelectric discharges cannot be excluded.

We investigate the use of parabolic equation (PE) methods for solving radio-wave propagation in polar ice. PE methods provide an approximate solution to Maxwell's equations, in contrast to full-field solutions such as finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) methods, yet provide a more complete model of propagation than simple geometric ray-tracing (RT) methods that are the current state of the art for simulating in-ice radio detection of neutrino-induced cascades. PE are more computationally efficient than FDTD methods, and more flexible than RT methods, allowing for the inclusion of diffractive effects, and modeling of propagation in regions that cannot be modeled with geometric methods. We present a new PE approximation suited to the in-ice case. We conclude that current ray-tracing methods may be too simplistic in their treatment of ice properties, and their continued use could overestimate experimental sensitivity for in-ice neutrino detection experiments. We discuss the implications for current in-ice Askaryan-type detectors and for the upcoming Radar Echo Telescope; two families of experiments for which these results are most relevant. We suggest that PE methods be investigated further for in-ice radio applications.

The Payload for Ultrahigh Energy Observations (PUEO) long-duration balloon experiment is designed to have world-leading sensitivity to ultrahigh-energy neutrinos at energies above 1 EeV. Probing this energy region is essential for understanding the extreme-energy universe at all distance scales. PUEO leverages experience from and supersedes the successful Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) program, with an improved design that drastically improves sensitivity by more than an order of magnitude at energies below 30 EeV. We have successfully grown centimeter-sized layered $R$SrNiO$_4$ single crystals under high oxygen pressures of 120 bar by the floating zone technique. This enabled us to perform neutron scattering experiments where we observe close to quarter-integer magnetic peaks below $\sim$77 K that are accompanied by steep upwards dispersing spin excitations. Within the high-frequency Ni-O bond stretching phonon dispersion, a softening at the propagation vector for a checkerboard modulation can be observed. Together with our spin wave simulations these observations reveal that this Ni$^{3+}$ system exhibits charge disproportionation with charges segregating into a checkerboard pattern within a nano phase separation scenario rather than showing a Jahn-Teller effect.

We have investigated the electronic structure of iridates in the double perovskite crystal structure containing either Ir$^{4+}$ or Ir$^{5+}$ using hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The experimental valence band spectra can be well reproduced using tight binding calculations including only the Ir $5d$, O $2p$ and O $2s$ orbitals with parameters based on the downfolding of the density-functional band structure results. We found that regardless of the A and B cations, the A$_2$BIrO$_6$ iridates have essentially zero O $2p$ to Ir $5d$ charge transfer energies. Hence, double perovskite iridates turn out to be extremely covalent systems with the consequence being that the magnetic exchange interactions become very long-ranged, thereby hampering the materialization of the long-sought Kitaev physics. Nevertheless, it still would be possible to realize a spin-liquid system using the iridates with a proper tuning of the various competing exchange interactions., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Physical Review B

The proposed ARIANNA-200 neutrino detector, located at sea-level on the Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica, consists of 200 autonomous and independent detector stations separated by 1 kilometer in a uniform triangular mesh, and serves as a pathfinder mission for the future IceCube-Gen2 project. The primary science mission of ARIANNA-200 is to search for sources of neutrinos with energies greater than 10^17 eV, complementing the reach of IceCube. An ARIANNA observation of a neutrino source would provide strong insight into the enigmatic sources of cosmic rays. ARIANNA observes the radio emission from high energy neutrino interactions in the Antarctic ice. Among radio based concepts under current investigation, ARIANNA-200 would uniquely survey the vast majority of the southern sky at any instant in time, and an important region of the northern sky, by virtue of its location on the surface of the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica. The broad sky coverage is specific to the Moore's Bay site, and makes ARIANNA-200 ideally suited to contribute to the multi-messenger thrust by the US National Science Foundation, Windows on the Universe - Multi-Messenger Astrophysics, providing capabilities to observe explosive sources from unknown directions. The ARIANNA architecture is designed to measure the angular direction to within 3 degrees for every neutrino candidate, which too plays an important role in the pursuit of multi-messenger observations of astrophysical sources.

We have synthesized Fe$_{1+y}$Te thin films by means of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) under Te-limited growth conditions. We found that epitaxial layer-by-layer growth is possible for a wide range of excess Fe values, wider than expected from what is known on the bulk material. Using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy at the Fe L$_{2,3}$ and Te M$_{4,5}$ edges, we observed that films with high excess Fe contain ferromagnetic clusters while films with lower excess Fe remain nonmagnetic. Moreover, x-ray absorption spectroscopy showed that it is possible to obtain films with very similar electronic structure as that of a high quality bulk single crystal Fe$_{1.14}$Te. Our results suggest that MBE with Te-limited growth may provide an opportunity to synthesize FeTe films with smaller amounts of excess Fe as to come closer to a possible superconducting phase., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures accepted for publication in Physical Review Materials

We present a measurement of the Hubble constant made using geometric distance measurements to megamaser-hosting galaxies. We have applied an improved approach for fitting maser data and obtained better distance estimates for four galaxies previously published by the Megamaser Cosmology Project: UGC 3789, NGC 6264, NGC 6323, and NGC 5765b. Combining these updated distance measurements with those for the maser galaxies CGCG 074-064 and NGC 4258, and assuming a fixed velocity uncertainty of 250 km s$^{-1}$ associated with peculiar motions, we constrain the Hubble constant to be $H_0 = 73.9 \pm 3.0$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ independent of distance ladders and the cosmic microwave background. This best value relies solely on maser-based distance and velocity measurements, and it does not use any peculiar velocity corrections. Different approaches for correcting peculiar velocities do not modify $H_0$ by more than ${\pm}1{\sigma}$, with the full range of best-fit Hubble constant values spanning 71.8-76.9 km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$. We corroborate prior indications that the local value of $H_0$ exceeds the early-Universe value, with a confidence level varying from 95-99% for different treatments of the peculiar velocities., Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in ApJL

As part of the survey component of the Megamaser Cosmology Project, we have discovered a disk megamaser system in the galaxy CGCG 074-064. Using the GBT and the VLA, we have obtained spectral monitoring observations of this maser system at a monthly cadence over the course of two years. We find that the systemic maser features display line-of-sight accelerations of ~4.4 km s$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$ that are nearly constant with velocity, while the high-velocity maser features show accelerations that are consistent with zero. We have also used the HSA to make a high-sensitivity VLBI map of the maser system in CGCG 074-064, which reveals that the masers reside in a thin, edge-on disk with a diameter of ~1.5 mas (0.6 pc). Fitting a three-dimensional warped disk model to the data, we measure a black hole mass of $2.42^{+0.22}_{-0.20} \times 10^7$ M$_{\odot}$ and a geometric distance to the system of $87.6^{+7.9}_{-7.2}$ Mpc. Assuming a CMB-frame recession velocity of $7308 \pm 150$ km s$^{-1}$, we constrain the Hubble constant to $H_0 = 81.0^{+7.4}_{-6.9}$ (stat.) $\pm 1.4$ (sys.) km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a new investigation of the dependence of H2O maser detection rates and properties on the mid-IR AGN luminosity, L_AGN, and the obscuring column density, N_H, based on mid-IR and hard X-ray photometry. Based on spectral energy distribution fitting that allows for decomposition of the black hole accretion and star-formation components in the mid-infrared, we show that the megamaser (disk maser) detection rate increases sharply for galaxies with 12 micron AGN luminosity L^{AGN}_{12 micron} greater than 10^42 erg/s, from ~<3%(~<2%) to ~12%(~5%). By using the ratio of the observed X-ray to mid-IR AGN luminosity as an indicator of N_H, we also find that the megamaser (disk maser) detection rates are boosted to 15%(7%) and 20%(9%) for galaxies with N_H >= 10^23 cm^{-2} and N_H >= 10^{24} cm^{-2}, respectively. Combining these column density cuts with a constraint for high L^{AGN}_{12 micron} (>=10^42 erg/s) predicts further increases in the megamaser (disk maser) detection rates to 19%(8%) and 27%(14%), revealing unprecedented potential boosts of the megamaser and disk maser detection rates by a factor of 7-15 relative to the current rates, depending on the chosen sample selection criteria. A noteworthy aspect of these new predictions is that the completeness rates are only compromised mildly, with the rates remaining at the level of ~95%(~50%) for sources with N_H >= 10^{23} cm^{-2} (N_H >= 10^24 cm^-2). We present VLBI images and kinematics of water maser emission in three active galaxies: NGC 5728, Mrk 1, and IRAS 08452-0011. IRAS 08452-0011 is a triple-peaked H2O megamaser, consistent with a Keplerian rotating disk, indicating a black hole mass of (3.3+/-0.2)x10^7 M_sun. NGC 5728 and Mrk 1 display double-peaked spectra and VLBI imaging reveal complicated gas kinematics, which do not allow for a robust determination of black hole mass. The two systems are either gas disks perturbed by AGN winds or part of outflows. We find that disturbed morphology and kinematics are a ubiquitous feature of all double-peaked maser systems, implying that these maser sources may reside in environments where AGN winds are prominent at ~1 pc scale and have significant impact on the masing gas. Such AGN tend to have black hole mass M_BH < 8x10^6 M_sun and Eddington ratios lambda_Edd >~ 0.1, while the triple-peaked megamasers show an opposite trend., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We report the observation of radar echoes from the ionization trails of high-energy particle cascades. These data were taken at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, where the full electron beam ($\sim$10$^9$ e$^-$ at $\sim$10 GeV/e$^-$) was directed into a plastic target to simulate an ultra high-energy neutrino interaction. This target was interrogated with radio waves, and coherent radio reflections from the cascades were detected, with properties consistent with theoretical expectations. This is the first definitive observation of radar echoes from high-energy particle cascades, which may lead to a viable neutrino detection technology for energies $\gtrsim 10^{16}$ eV., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We report on our investigation on the magnetism of the iridate double perovskite Sr$_2$CoIrO$_6$, a nominally Ir$^{5+}$ Van Vleck $J_{eff}=0$ system. Using x-ray absorption (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectroscopy at the Ir-$L_{2,3}$ edges, we found a nearly zero orbital contribution to the magnetic moment and thus an apparent breakdown of the $J_{eff}=0$ ground state. By carrying out also XAS and XMCD experiments at the Co-$L_{2,3}$ edges and by performing detailed full atomic multiplet calculations to simulate all spectra, we discovered that the compound consists of about 90% Ir$^{5+}$ ($J_{eff}=0$) and Co$^{3+}$ ($S=2$) and 10% Ir$^{6+}$ ($S=3/2$) and Co$^{2+}$ ($S=3/2$). The magnetic signal of this minority Ir$^{6+}$ component is almost equally strong as that of the main Ir$^{5+}$ component. We infer that there is a competition between the Ir$^{5+}$-Co$^{3+}$ and the Ir$^{6+}$-Co$^{2+}$ configurations in this stoichiometric compound.

An essential part of the paradigm describing active galactic nuclei is the alignment between the radio jet and the associated rotation axis of the sub-pc sized accretion disks. Because of the small linear and angular scales involved, this alignment has not yet been checked in a sufficient number of Low Luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei (LLAGNs). The project intends to examine the validity of this paradigm by measuring the radio continuum on the same physical scale as the accretion disks, to investigate any possible connection between these disks and the radio continuum. We observed a sample of 18 LLAGNs in the 4.8 GHz (6 cm) radio continuum using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) with 3.3 to 6.5 milliarcseconds resolution. The sources were selected to show both an edge-on accretion disk revealed by 22 GHz H$_{2}$O megamaser emission and signatures of a radio jet. Furthermore, the sources were previously detected in 33GHz radio continuum observations made with the Very Large Array. Five out of 18 galaxies observed were detected at 8 sigma or higher levels (Mrk0001, Mrk1210, Mrk1419, NGC2273 and UGC3193). While all these sources are known to have maser disks, four of these five sources exhibit a maser disk with known orientation. For all four sources, the radio continuum is misaligned relative to the rotation axis of the maser disk, but with a 99.1% confidence level, the orientations are not random and are confined to a cone within 32 degree of the maser disk's normal. Among the four sources the misalignment of the radio continuum with respect to the normal vector to the maser disk is smaller when the inner radius of the maser disk is larger. Furthermore, a correlation is observed between the 5 GHz VLBA radio continuum and the [OIII] luminosity and also with the H$_{2}$O maser disk's inner radius., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We report the result of our search for the 380 GHz H2O line emissions from the quadruply lensed QSO MG J0104+0534 at z = 2.639 with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Our observation shows a tentative detection of the 380 GHz line from the lensed QSO, and line spectrum shows a broad spectral distribution that has a velocity width of ~290 km/s and a peak flux of ~0.8 mJy. The integrated-intensity map of the H2O line show lensed emissions at the A1 and A2 component of the QSO, with the A2 component slightly resolved. The integrated line flux ratio between the A1 and A2 component shows unexpected difference with the continuum flux ratio. Based on our gravitational lens modeling assuming our tentative detection is real, this flux ratio anomaly would suggest that the 380 GHz line emissions come from two or three spatially displaced locations in the QSO, with the dominant one located at the position of the continuum emission from the QSO and the other one(s) displaced from the continuum by ~1.5 kpc on the source plane., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, Accepted by PASJ

We report a combined experimental and theoretical x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectroscopy study at the Ir-$L_{2,3}$ edges on the Ir$^{5+}$ ions of the layered hybrid solid state oxide Sr$_2$Co$_{0.5}$Ir$_{0.5}$O$_4$ with the K$_2$NiF$_4$ structure. From theoretical simulation of the experimental Ir-$L_{2,3}$ XMCD spectrum, we found a deviation from a pure $J_{eff}=0$ ground state with an anisotropic orbital-to-spin moment ratio ($L_x/2S_x$ = 0.43 and $L_z/2S_z$ = 0.78). This deviation is mainly due to multiplet interactions being not small compared to the cubic crystal field and due to the presence of a large tetragonal crystal field associated with the crystal structure. Nevertheless, our calculations show that the energy gap between the singlet ground state and the triplet excited state is still large and that the magnetic properties of the Ir$^{5+}$ ions can be well described in terms of singlet Van Vleck paramagnetism.

We present high resolution (sub-mas) VLBI maps of nuclear H2O megamasers for seven galaxies. In UGC6093, the well-aligned systemic masers and high-velocity masers originate in an edge-on, flat disk and we determine the mass of the central SMBH to be M_SMBH = 2.58*10^7Msun(+-7%). For J1346+5228, the distribution of masers is consistent with a disk, but the faint high-velocity masers are only marginally detected, and we constrain the mass of the SMBH to be in the range 1.5-2.0*10^7Msun. The origin of the masers in Mrk1210 is less clear, as the systemic and high-velocity masers are misaligned and show a disorganized velocity structure. We present one possible model in which the masers originate in a tilted, warped disk, but we do not rule out the possibility of other explanations including outflow masers. In NGC6926, we detect a set of redshifted masers, clustered within a pc of each other, and a single blueshifted maser about 4.4pc away, an offset that would be unusually large for a maser disk system. Nevertheless, if it is a disk system, we estimate the enclosed mass to be M_SMBH<4.8*10^7 Msun . For NGC5793, we detect redshifted masers spaced about 1.4pc from a clustered set of blueshifted features. The orientation of the structure supports a disk scenario as suggested by Hagiwara et al.(2001). We estimate the enclosed mass to be M SMBH<1.3*10^7 Msun. B-site ordered thin films of double perovskite Sr$_2$CoIrO$_6$ were epitaxially grown by a metal-organic aerosol deposition technique on various substrates, actuating different strain states. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and polarized far-field Raman spectroscopy confirm the strained epitaxial growth on all used substrates. Polarization dependent Co $L_{2,3}$ X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals a change of the magnetic easy axis of the antiferromagnetically ordered (high-spin) Co$^{3+}$ sublattice within the strain series. By reversing the applied strain direction from tensile to compressive, the easy axis changes abruptly from in-plane to out-of-plane orientation. The low-temperature magnetoresistance changes its sign respectively and is described by a combination of weak anti-localization and anisotropic magnetoresistance effects., Comment: 19 pages, 29 figures (including supplemental material)

H2O maser disks with Keplerian rotation in active galactic nuclei offer a clean way to determine accurate black hole mass and the Hubble constant. An important assumption made in using a Keplerian H2O maser disk for measuring the black hole mass and the Hubble constant is that the disk mass is negligible compared to the black hole mass. To test this assumption, a simple and useful model can be found in Hure et al. (2011). In this work, the authors apply a linear disk model to a position-dynamical mass diagram and re-analyze position-velocity data from H2O maser disks associated with active galactic nuclei. They claim that a maser disk with nearly perfect Keplerian rotation could have disk mass comparable to the black hole mass. This would imply that ignoring the effects of disk self-gravity can lead to large systematic errors in the measurement of black hole mass and the Hubble constant. We examine their methods and find that their large estimated disk masses of Keplerian disks are likely the result of their use of projected instead of 3-dimensional position and velocity information. To place better constraints on the disk masses of Keplerian maser systems, we incorporate disk self-gravity into a 3-dimensional Bayesian modelling program for maser disks and also evaluate constraints based on the physical conditions for disks which support water maser emission. Water megamasers from circumnuclear disks in galaxy centers provide the most accurate measurements of supermassive black hole masses and uniquely probe the sub-parsec accretion processes. At the same time, these systems offer independent crucial constraints of the Hubble Constant in the nearby universe, and thus, the arguably best single constraint on the nature of dark energy. The chances of finding these golden standards are however abysmally low, at an overall =< 3% for any level of water maser emission detected at 22 GHz, and =< 1% for those exhibiting the disk-like configuration. We provide here a thorough summary of the current state of the detection of water megamaser disks, along with a novel investigation of the likelihood of increasing their detection rates based on a multivariate parameter analysis of optical and mid-infrared photometric properties of the largest database of galaxies surveyed for the 22 GHz emission. We find that galaxies with water megamaser emission tend to associate with strong emission in all WISE mid-infrared wavelengths, with the strongest enhancement in the W4 band, at 22 micron, as well as with previously proposed and newly found indicators of AGN strength in the mid-infrared, such as red W1-W2 and W1-W4 colors, and the integrated mid-infrared luminosity of the host galaxy. These trends offer a potential boost of the megamaser detection rates to 6 - 15%, or a factor of 2-8 relative to the current rates, depending on the chosen sample selection criteria, while fostering real chances for discovering >= 20 new megamaser disks., Comment: 23 pages, 3 tables, 10 figures. We report results from 21-cm intensity maps acquired from the Parkes radio telescope and cross-correlated with galaxy maps from the 2dF galaxy survey. The data span the redshift range $0.057

We investigate the nuclear environment of galaxies with observed 22 GHz water megamaser in their subparsec edge-on accretion disks, using 33 GHz (9mm) radio continuum data from VLA, with a resolution of ~ 0.2-0.5 arcsecs, and relate the maser and host galaxy properties to those of its radio continuum emission. Eighty-seven percent (21 out of 24) galaxies in our sample show 33 GHz radio continuum emission at levels of 4.5-240 $\sigma$. Five sources show extended emission, including one source with two main components and one with three main components. The remaining detected 16 sources exhibit compact cores within the sensitivity limits. Little evidence is found for extended jets (>300 pc) in most sources. Either they do not exist, or our chosen frequency of 33 GHz is too high for a detection of these supposedly steep spectrum features. In only one source among those with known maser disk orientation, NGC4388, we found an extended jet-like feature that appears to be oriented perpendicular to the water megamaser disk. Smaller 100-300 pc sized jets might also be present, as is suggested by the beam-deconvolved morphology of our sources. Whenever possible, central positions with accuracies of 20-280 mas are provided. A correlation analysis shows that the 33 GHz luminosity weakly correlates with the infrared luminosity. The 33 GHz luminosity is anticorrelated with the circular velocity of the galaxy. The black hole masses show stronger correlations with water maser luminosity than with 1.4 GHz, 33 GHz, or hard X-ray luminosities. Furthermore, the inner radii of the disks show stronger correlations with 1.4 GHz, 33 GHz, and hard X-ray luminosities than their outer radii, suggesting that the outer radii may be affected by disk warping, star formation, or peculiar density distributions., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A

We report on a combined soft x-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) study at the Co-$L_{3,2}$ on the hybrid 3$d$/5$d$ solid state oxide Sr$_2$Co$_{0.5}$Ir$_{0.5}$O$_4$ with the K$_2$NiF$_4$ structure. Our data indicate unambiguously a pure high spin state $(S=2)$ for the Co$^{3+}$ (3$d^6$) ions with a significant unquenched orbital moment $L_z/2S_z=0.25$ despite the sizeable elongation of the CoO$_6$ octahedra. Using quantitative model calculations based on parameters consistent with our spectra, we have investigated the stability of this high spin state with respect to the competing low spin and intermediate spin states., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

The material class of rare earth nickelates with high Ni$^{3+}$ oxidation state is generating continued interest due to the occurrence of a metal-insulator transition with charge order and the appearance of non-collinear magnetic phases within this insulating regime. The recent theoretical prediction for superconductivity in LaNiO$_3$ thin films has also triggered intensive research efforts. LaNiO$_3$ seems to be the only rare earth nickelate that stays metallic and paramagnetic down to lowest temperatures. So far, centimetre-sized impurity-free single crystal growth has not been reported for the rare earth nickelates material class since elevated oxygen pressures are required for their synthesis. Here, we report on the successful growth of centimetre-sized LaNiO$_3$ single crystals by the floating zone technique at oxygen pressures of up to 150 bar. Our crystals are essentially free from Ni$^{2+}$ impurities and exhibit metallic properties together with an unexpected but clear antiferromagnetic transition., Comment: Nature Communications 9 (1), 43, S. 1 - 7 (2018)

We studied the local Ru 4d electronic structure of alpha-RuCl3 by means of polarization dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Ru-L2,3 edges. We observed a vanishingly small linear dichroism indicating that electronically the Ru 4d local symmetry is highly cubic. Using full multiplet cluster calculations we were able to reproduce the spectra excellently and to extract that the trigonal splitting of the t2g orbitals is -12 $\pm10$ meV, i.e. negligible as compared to the Ru 4d spin-orbit coupling constant. Consistent with our magnetic circular dichroism measurements, we found that the ratio of the orbital and spin moments is 2.0, the value expected for a Jeff = 1/2 ground state. We have thus shown that as far as the Ru 4d local properties are concerned, alpha-RuCl3 is an ideal candidate for the realization of Kitaev physics.

We have investigated the electronic structure of Sr2IrO4 using core level resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. The experimental spectra can be well reproduced using ab initio density functional theory based multiplet ligand field theory calculations, thereby validating these calculations. We found that the low-energy, effective Ir t2g orbitals are practically degenerate in energy. We uncovered that covalency in Sr2IrO4, and generally in iridates, is very large with substantial oxygen ligand hole character in the Ir t2g Wannier orbitals. This has far reaching consequences, as not only the onsite crystal-field energies are determined by the long range crystal-structure, but, more significantly, magnetic exchange interactions will have long range distance dependent anisotropies in the spin direction. These findings set constraints and show pathways for the design of d^5 materials that can host compass-like magnetic interactions.

As part of the Megamaser Cosmology Project (MCP), we present VLBI maps of nuclear water masers toward five galaxies. The masers originate in sub-parsec circumnuclear disks. For three of the galaxies, we fit Keplerian rotation curves to estimate their supermassive black hole (SMBH) masses, and determine (2.9 $\pm$ 0.3) $\times~10^{6}M_\odot$ for J0437+2456, (1.7 $\pm$ 0.1) $\times~10^{7}M_\odot$ for ESO 558$-$G009, and (1.1 $\pm$ 0.2) $\times~10^{7}M_\odot$ for NGC 5495. In the other two galaxies, Mrk 1029 and NGC 1320, the geometry and dynamics are more complicated and preclude robust black hole mass estimates. Including our new results, we compiled a list of 15 VLBI-confirmed disk maser galaxies with robust SMBH mass measurements. With this sample, we confirm the empirical relation of $R_{out} \propto 0.3 M_{SMBH}$ reported in Wardle & Yusef-Zadeh (2012). We also find a tentative correlation between maser disk outer radii and WISE luminosity. We find no correlations of maser disk size with X-ray 2-10 keV luminosity or [O III] luminosity., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We observe quasi-static incommensurate magnetic peaks in neutron scattering experiments on layered cobalt oxides La2-xSrxCoO4 with high Co oxidation states that have been reported to be paramagnetic. This enables us to measure the magnetic excitations in this highly hole-doped incommensurate regime and compare our results with those found in the low-doped incommensurate regime that exhibit hourglass magnetic spectra. The hourglass shape of magnetic excitations completely disappears given a high Sr doping. Moreover, broad low-energy excitations are found, which are not centered at the incommensurate magnetic peak positions but around the quarter-integer values that are typically exhibited by excitations in the checkerboard charge ordered phase. Our findings suggest that the strong inter-site exchange interactions in the undoped islands are critical for the emergence of hourglass spectra in the incommensurate magnetic phases of La2-xSrxCoO4., Comment: http://www.nature.com/articles/srep25117/

As part of the Megamaser Cosmology Project (MCP), here we present a new geometric distance measurement to the megamaser galaxy NGC 5765b. Through a series of VLBI observations, we have confirmed the water masers trace a thin, sub-parsec Keplerian disk around the nucleus, implying an enclosed mass of 4.55 $\pm$ 0.40 $\times~10^{7}M_\odot$. Meanwhile, from single dish monitoring of the maser spectra over two years, we measured the secular drifts of maser features near the systemic velocity of the galaxy with rates between 0.5 and 1.2 km s$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$. Fitting a warped, thin disk model to these measurements, we determine a Hubble Constant $H_{0}$ of 66.0 $\pm$ 6.0 km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ with the angular-diameter distance to NGC 5765b of 126.3 $\pm$ 11.6 Mpc. Apart from the distance measurement, we also investigate some physical properties related to the maser disk in NGC 5765b. The high-velocity features are spatially distributed into several clumps, which may indicate the existence of a spiral density wave associated with the accretion disk. For the red-shifted features, the envelope defined by the peak maser intensities increases with radius. The profile of the systemic masers in NGC 5765b is smooth and shows almost no structural changes over the two years of monitoring time, which differs from the more variable case of NGC 4258., Comment: 49 pages, 11 figures, 9 tables; Accepted by ApJ

From magnetic susceptibility, dielectric permittivity, electric polarization and specific heat measurements, we discover spin-induced ferroelectricity and magnetoelectric coupling in Mn3TeO6 and observe two successive magnetic transitions at low temperatures. A non-ferroelectric intermediate magnetic state occurs below 23 K and a multiferroic ground state emerges below 21 K. Moreover, Mn3TeO6 is a candidate for a multiferroic material where two types of incommensurate spin structures, cycloidal and helical, coexist. We report a study of the local magnetism in thin films of SrRuO3 grown on (111) and (001) oriented SrTiO3 substrates using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy (XMCD) at the Ru-L2,3 edges. The application of the sum rules to the XMCD data gives an almost quenched orbital moment and a spin moment close to the value expected for the low spin state S = 1 . Full-multiplet cluster calculations indicate that the low spin state is quite stable and suggest that the occurrence of a transition to the high spin state S = 2 in strained thin films of SrRuO3 is unlikely as it would be too expensive in energy., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys Rev B

SmFeO3 has attracted considerable attention very recently due to the reported multiferroic properties above room-temperature. We have performed powder and single crystal neutron diffraction as well as complementary polarization dependent soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements on floating-zone grown SmFeO3 single crystals in order to determine its magnetic structure. We found a k=0 G-type collinear antiferromagnetic structure that is not compatible with inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction driven ferroelectricity. While the structural data reveals a clear sign for magneto-elastic coupling at the N\'eel-temperature of ~675 K, the dielectric measurements remain silent as far as ferroelectricity is concerned.

We present observations of the H2O megamasers in the accretion disk of NGC 6323. By combining interferometric and spectral monitoring data, we estimate H$_{0} = 73^{+26}_{-22}$ km/s/Mpc, where the low strength of the systemic masers (<15 mJy) limits the accuracy of this estimate. The methods developed here for dealing with weak maser emission provide guidance for observations of similar sources, until significant increases in radio telescope sensitivity, such as anticipated from the next generation Very Large Array, are realized., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables; Accepted by ApJ; in press

A 12-m diameter radio telescope will be deployed to the Summit Station in Greenland to provide direct confirmation of a Super Massive Black Hole (SMBH) by observing its shadow image in the active galaxy M87. The telescope (Greenland Telescope: GLT) is to become one of the Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) stations at sub-millimeter (submm) regime, providing the longest baseline > 9,000 km to achieve an exceptional angular resolution of 20 micro arc sec at 350 GHz, which will enable us to resolve the shadow size of ~40 micro arc sec. The triangle with the longest baselines formed by the GLT, the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile, and the Submillimeter Array (SMA) in Hawaii will play a key role for the M87 observations. We have been working on the image simulations based on realistic conditions for a better understanding of the possible observed images. In parallel, retrofitting of the telescope and the site developments are in progress. Based on three years of opacity monitoring at 225 GHz, our measurements indicate that the site is excellent for submm observations, comparable to the ALMA site.
