High Energy Physics - Experiment ,Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Darmstadt, Germany, provides unique possibilities for a new generation of hadron-, nuclear- and atomic physics experiments. The future antiProton ANnihilations at DArmstadt (PANDA or $\overline{\rm P}$ANDA) experiment at FAIR will offer a broad physics programme, covering different aspects of the strong interaction. Understanding the latter in the non-perturbative regime remains one of the greatest challenges in contemporary physics. The antiproton-nucleon interaction studied with PANDA provides crucial tests in this area. Furthermore, the high-intensity, low-energy domain of PANDA allows for searches for physics beyond the Standard Model, e.g. through high precision symmetry tests. This paper takes into account a staged approach for the detector setup and for the delivered luminosity from the accelerator. The available detector setup at the time of the delivery of the first antiproton beams in the HESR storage ring is referred to as the \textit{Phase One} setup. The physics programme that is achievable during Phase One is outlined in this paper., Comment: 35 pages, 15 figures

Mathematics - Analysis of PDEs ,35K40, 47D08, 47D06 - Abstract
In this paper we consider vector-valued Schr\"odinger operators of the form $\mathrm{div}(Q\nabla u)-Vu$, where $V=(v_{ij})$ is a nonnegative locally bounded matrix-valued function and $Q$ is a symmetric, strictly elliptic matrix whose entries are bounded and continuously differentiable with bounded derivatives. Concerning the potential $V$, we assume an that it is pointwise accretive and that its entries are in $L^\infty_{\mathrm{loc}}(\mathbb{R}^d)$. Under these assumptions, we prove that a realization of the vector-valued Schr\"odinger operator generates a $C_0$-semigroup of contractions in $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d; \mathbb{C}^m)$. Further properties are also investigated., Comment: 11 pages, no figures

Astrophysics - Earth and Planetary Astrophysics - Abstract
The habitable zone (HZ) describes the range of orbital distances around a star where the existence of liquid water on the surface of an Earth-like planet is in principle possible. While 3D climate studies can calculate the water vapor, ice albedo, and cloud feedback self-consistently and therefore allow for a deeper understanding and the identification of relevant climate processes, 1D model studies rely on fewer model assumptions and can be more easily applied to the large parameter space possible for exoplanets. We evaluate the applicability of 1D climate models to estimate the potential habitability of Earth-like exoplanets by comparing our 1D model results to those of 3D climate studies in the literature. We applied a cloud-free 1D radiative-convective climate model to calculate the climate of Earth-like planets around different types of main-sequence stars with varying surface albedo and relative humidity profile. These parameters depend on climate feedbacks that are not treated self-consistently in most 1D models. We compared the results to those of 3D model calculations in the literature and investigated to what extent the 1D model can approximate the surface temperatures calculated by the 3D models. The 1D parameter study results in a large range of climates possible for an Earth-sized planet with an Earth-like atmosphere and water reservoir at a certain stellar insolation. At some stellar insolations the full spectrum of climate states could be realized, i.e., uninhabitable conditions as well as habitable surface conditions, depending only on the relative humidity and surface albedo assumed. When treating the surface albedo and the relative humidity profile as parameters in 1D model studies and using the habitability constraints found by recent 3D modeling studies, the same conclusions about the potential habitability of a planet can be drawn as from 3D model calculations., Comment: accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics, 12 pages

Astrophysics - Earth and Planetary Astrophysics - Abstract
The potential habitability of a terrestrial planet is usually defined by the possible existence of liquid water on its surface. The potential presence of liquid water depends on many factors such as, most importantly, surface temperatures. The properties of the planetary atmosphere and its interaction with the radiative energy provided by the planet's host star are thereby of decisive importance. In this study we investigate the influence of different main-sequence stars upon the climate of Earth-like extrasolar planets and their potential habitability by applying a 3D Earth climate model accounting for local and dynamical processes. The calculations have been performed for planets with Earth-like atmospheres at orbital distances where the total amount of energy received from the various host stars equals the solar constant. In contrast to previous 3D modeling studies, we include the effect of ozone radiative heating upon the vertical temperature structure of the atmospheres. The global orbital mean results obtained have been compared to those of a 1D radiative convective climate model. The different stellar spectral energy distributions lead to different surface temperatures and due to ozone heating to very different vertical temperature structures. As previous 1D studies we find higher surface temperatures for the Earth-like planet around the K-type star, and lower temperatures for the planet around the F-type star compared to an Earth-like planet around the Sun. However, this effect is more pronounced in the 3D model results than in the 1D model because the 3D model accounts for feedback processes such as the ice-albedo and the water vapor feedback. Whether the 1D model may approximate the global mean of the 3D model results strongly depends on the choice of the relative humidity profile in the 1D model, which is used to determine the water vapor profile., Comment: in press in Planetary and Space Science

Mathematical Physics ,37C27, 37D20, 37D40, 81Q50 - Abstract
Physicists have argued that periodic orbit bunching leads to universal spectral fluctuations for chaotic quantum systems. To establish a more detailed mathematical understanding of this fact, it is first necessary to look more closely at the classical side of the problem and determine orbit pairs consisting of orbits which have similar actions. In this paper we specialize to the geodesic flow on compact factors of the hyperbolic plane as a classical chaotic system. We prove the existence of a periodic partner orbit for a given periodic orbit which has a small-angle self-crossing in configuration space which is a `2-encounter'; such configurations are called `Sieber-Richter pairs' in the physics literature. Furthermore, we derive an estimate for the action difference of the partners. In the second part of this paper [13], an inductive argument is provided to deal with higher-order encounters., Comment: to appear on Nonlinearity

The manifestation of extreme solar proton events (SPEs) in Beryllium‐10 (10Be) ice core data contains valuable information about the strength and incidence of SPEs or local characteristics of the atmosphere. To extract this information, the signals of enhanced production of cosmogenic 10Be due to the SPEs have to be detected, hence distinguished from the variability of the background production by galactic cosmic rays (GCRs). Here, we study the transport and deposition of 10Be from GCRs, using the ECHAM/MESSy Atmospheric Chemistry climate model, and discuss the detectability of extreme SPEs (similar to the CE 774/775 SPE) in 10Be ice core data depending on the ice core location, seasonal appearance of the SPE, atmospheric aerosol size distribution and phase of the 11‐year solar cycle. We find that sedimentation can be a major deposition mechanism of GCR generated 10Be, especially at high latitudes, depending on the aerosols to which 10Be attaches after production. The comparison of our results to four ice core records of 10Be from Greenland and Antarctica shows good agreement for both 10Be from GCRs and solar energetic particles (SEP). From our results we deduce that the location of detection and the season of occurrence of the SPE have a considerable effect on its detectability, as well as the aerosol size distribution the produced cosmogenic nuclides meet in the atmosphere. Furthermore, we find that SPEs occurring in the phase of highest activity during the 11‐year solar cycle are more detectable than SPEs that arise in the phase of lowest activity. Plain Language Summary: Solar proton events are eruptions of particles from the Sun that can cause an increased production of Beryllium‐10 in Earth's atmosphere. This increase can be detected in ice cores, which can tell us about the dynamics of the Sun or local characteristics of the atmosphere. To detect solar proton events in ice cores, the signal must be distinguished from the background production of Beryllium‐10 from galactic cosmic rays, because the two signals can be very similar. Here, we used a climate model to study the deposition of Beryllium‐10 from galactic cosmic rays and simulated the detectability of solar proton events in ice cores for different locations, months of occurrence, sizes of aerosols in the atmosphere, and phases of the 11‐year solar cycle. We found that sedimentation can be a major deposition mechanism for Beryllium‐10, especially at high latitudes. We also found that the season of the solar proton event has a big impact on its detectability. Furthermore, we show that solar proton events that occur during high solar activity are more easily detected than events that occur during a phase of low activity. The findings are useful to improve the interpretation of Beryllium‐10 ice core records. Key Points: The role of galactic cosmic rays for the detectability of solar proton events in Beryllium‐10 ice core records was studied in a 3D‐modelWe show that sedimentation can be a major deposition mechanism for Beryllium‐10, especially at high latitudesThe seasonal timing of the solar proton event and the phase of the 11‐year solar cycle during the event have an impact on its detectability [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work is on the Physics of the B Factories. Part A of this book contains a brief description of the SLAC and KEK B Factories as well as their detectors, BaBar and Belle, and data taking related issues. Part B discusses tools and methods used by the experiments in order to obtain results. The results themselves can be found in Part C. Please note that version 3 on the archive is the auxiliary version of the Physics of the B Factories book. This uses the notation alpha, beta, gamma for the angles of the Unitarity Triangle. The nominal version uses the notation phi_1, phi_2 and phi_3. Please cite this work as Eur. Phys. J. C74 (2014) 3026., Comment: 928 pages, version 3 (arXiv:1406.6311v3) corresponds to the alpha, beta, gamma version of the book, the other versions use the phi1, phi2, phi3 notation

570 - Abstract
Dynamics of proteins are increasingly recognised as key features as they can contribute to the function of the protein. Structural dynamics manifest as protein folding, protein domain movement and small allosteric responses. Hence, investigating and understanding atomistic motions in proteins to elucidate their implication in protein function mark a crucial paradigm shift from a structure-function relation to a structure-dynamics-function relation. The human histone deacetylase 8 is a key hydrolase in gene regulation and has been identified as a drug target for the treatment of several cancers. I used molecular dynamics simulations to propose a mechanism by which dynamic loop interactions can influence the activity of the human histone deacetylase 8. Subsequently I substantiated this hypothesis by using experimental techniques such as biochemical assays and single point mutations. Furthermore, I studied the structure and dynamics of the histone deacetylase 8 using nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. The proposed mechanism of loop interaction yields a mechanistic rationale for phenomena that could not be explained on a molecular level before.

We present pulsed electron-nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) experiments which enable us to characterize the coupling between bismuth donor spin qubits in Si and the surrounding spin bath of 29Si impurities which provides the dominant decoherence mechanism (nuclear spin diffusion) at low temperatures (< 16 K). Decoupling from the spin bath is predicted and cluster correlation expansion simulations show near-complete suppression of spin diffusion, at optimal working points. The suppression takes the form of sharply peaked divergences of the spin diffusion coherence time, in contrast with previously identified broader regions of insensitivity to classical fluctuations. ENDOR data suggest that anisotropic contributions are comparatively weak, so the form of the divergences is largely independent of crystal orientation., Comment: Added journal ref., minor improvements

We study a class of elliptic operators $A$ with unbounded coefficients defined in $I\times\CR^d$ for some unbounded interval $I\subset\CR$. We prove that, for any $s\in I$, the Cauchy problem $u(s,\cdot)=f\in C_b(\CR^d)$ for the parabolic equation $D_tu=Au$ admits a unique bounded classical solution $u$. This allows to associate an evolution family $\{G(t,s)\}$ with $A$, in a natural way. We study the main properties of this evolution family and prove gradient estimates for the function $G(t,s)f$. Under suitable assumptions, we show that there exists an evolution system of measures for $\{G(t,s)\}$ and we study the first properties of the extension of $G(t,s)$ to the $L^p$-spaces with respect to such measures., Comment: To appear on Trans. Astrophysics - Abstract
Exploring signals from the outer space has become an observational science under fast expansion. On the basis of its advanced technology the MAGIC telescope is the natural building block for the first large scale ground based high energy gamma-ray observatory. The low energy threshold for gamma-rays together with different background sources leads to a considerable amount of data. The analysis will be done in different institutes spread over Europe. Therefore MAGIC offers the opportunity to use the Grid technology to setup a distributed computational and data intensive analysis system with the nowadays available technology. Benefits of Grid computing for the MAGIC telescope are presented., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figures, to be published in the Proceedings of the 6th International Symposium ''Frontiers of Fundamental and Computational Physics'' (FFP6), Udine (Italy), Sep. 26-29, 2004

We present a measurement of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B meson decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e +e - collider at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The data sample consists of 29.7 fb -1 recorded at the γ(4S) resonance and 3.9 fb -1 off resonance. One of the neutral B mesons, which are produced in pairs at the γ(4S), is fully reconstructed in the CP decay modes J/ ψK S0, ψ(2S)K S0, χ c1K S0, J/ψK* 0 (K* 0→K S0π 0) and J/ψK L0, or in flavor-eigenstate modes involving D (*)π/p/a 1 and J/ψK* 0 (K* 0→K +π -). The flavor of the other neutral B meson is tagged at the time of its decay, mainly with the charge of identified leptons and kaons. A neural netsvork tagging algorithm is used to recover events without a clear lepton or kaon tag. The proper time elapsed between the decays is determined by measuring the distance between the decay vertices. Wrong-tag probabilities, the time-difference resolution function, and the B 0-B̄ 0 oscillation frequency Δm d are measured with a sample of about 6350 fully-reconstructed B 0 decays in hadronic flavor-eigenstate modes. A maximum-likelihood fit to this flavor eigenstate sample finds Δm d=0.516±0.016(stat)±0.010(syst) ps -1. The value of the asymmetry amplitude sin 2β is determined from a simultaneous maximum-likelihood fit to the time-difference distribution of the flavor-eigenstate sample and about 642 tagged B 0 decays in the CP-eigenstate modes. We find sin 2β=0.59 ±0.14(stat)±0. 05(syst), demonstrating that CP violation exists in the neutral B meson system. We also determine the value of the CP violation parameter |λ|=0. 93±0.09(stat)±0.03(syst), which is consistent with the expectation of |λ|=1 for no direct CP violation. © 2002 The American Physical Society.

We report branching fraction measurements for exclusive decays of charged and neutral B mesons into two-body final states containing a charmonium meson. We use a sample of 22.72±0.36 million BB̄ events collected between October 1999 and October 2000 with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage rings at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The charmonium mesons considered here are J/Ψ, Ψ(2S), and Χ c1and the light meson in the decay is either a K, K*, or π 0. © 2002 The American Physical Society.

We report a measurement of the branching fraction of the decay B0-->D(*+)D(*-) and of the CP-odd component of its final state using the BABAR detector. With data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.4 fb (-1) collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance during 1999-2000, we have reconstructed 38 candidate signal events in the mode B0-->D(*+)D(*-) with an estimated background of 6.2+/-0.5 events. From these events, we determine the branching fraction to be B(B0-->D(*+)D(*-))=[8.3+/-1.6(stat)+/-1.2(syst)]x10(-4). The measured CP-odd fraction of the final state is 0.22+/-0.18(stat)+/-0.03(syst).

The B(0) lifetime was measured with a sample of 23 million BB pairs collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e(+)e(-) storage ring during 1999 and 2000. Events from the semileptonic decay B(0)-->D(*-)l(+)nu(l) have been selected with a partial reconstruction method in which only the charged lepton and the slow pi from the D*--->D(0)pi(-) decay are reconstructed. The result is tau(B(0)) = 1.529+/-0.012(stat)+/-0.029(syst) ps.

We report the results of a search for T and CP violation in B0-B-0 mixing using an inclusive dilepton sample collected by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II B Factory. The asymmetry between l+l+ and l-l- events allows us to compare the probabilities for B-0-->B0 and B0-->B-0 oscillations and thus probe T and CP invariance. Using a sample of 23 x 10(6) BB- pairs, we measure a same-sign dilepton asymmetry of A(T/CP) = [0.5+/-1.2(stat)+/-1.4(syst)]%. For the modulus of the ratio of complex mixing parameters p and q, we obtain q/p = 0.998+/-0.006(stat)+/-0.007(syst).

Flavor oscillations of neutral B mesons have been studied in e+e- annihilation data collected with the BABAR detector at center-of-mass energies near the upsilon(4S) resonance. The data sample used for this purpose consists of events in which one B0 meson is reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode, while the flavor of the recoiling B0 is determined with a tagging algorithm that exploits the correlation between the flavor of the heavy quark and the charges of its decay products. From the time development of the observed mixed and unmixed final states, we determine the B0-B-0 oscillation frequency deltamd to be 0.516+/-0.016(stat)+/-0.010(syst) ps-1.

The B0-B-0 oscillation frequency has been measured with a sample of 23 x 10(6) BB- pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we select events in which both B mesons decay semileptonically and use the charge of the leptons to identify the flavor of each B meson. A simultaneous fit to the decay time difference distributions for opposite- and same-sign dilepton events gives deltamd = 0.493+/-0.012(stat)+/-0.009(syst) ps-1.

New measurements of Ds+ and Ds*+ meson production rates from B decays and from qq̄ continuum events near the Y(4S) resonance are presented. Using 20.8 fb-1 of data on the Y(4S) resonance and 2.6 fb-1 off-resonance, we find the inclusive branching fractions B(B→Ds+ X)=(10.93±0.19±0.58±2.73)% and B(B→Ds*+X)=(7.9±0.8±0.7 ±2.0)%, where the first error is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the Ds+→φπ+ branching fraction uncertainty. The production cross sections σ(e+e- →Ds+X) × B(Ds+→φπ+)=7.55±0.20 ±0.34 pb and σ(e+e-→Ds *±X) × B(Ds+→φπ+) = 5.8±0.7±0.5 pb are measured at center-of-mass energies about 40 MeV below the Y(4S) mass. The branching fractions ΣB(B→Ds(*)+ D̄(*))=(5.07±0.14±0.30±1.27)% and ∑B(B→Ds*+D̄(*)) =(4.1±0.2±0.4±1.0)% are determined from the Ds(*)+ momentum spectra. The mass difference m(Ds+)-m(D+)=98.4±0.1 ±0.3 MeV/c2 is also measured.

We present a measurement of the time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B decays to the eigenstate, and an updated measurement of the charge asymmetry in B0→K+π-~ decays. In a sample of 33 million Y(4S)→BB̄ decays collected with the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric B factory, we find 65-11+12 and 217±18 K+π- candidates and measure the asymmetry parameters Sππ=0.03-0.56+0.53±0.111, Cππ=-0.25-0.17+0.45±0.14, and AKπ = -0.07±0. 08±0.02, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. © 2002 The American Physical Society.

The branching fractions of the exclusive decays B0-->K(*0)gamma and B+-->K(*+)gamma are measured from a sample of (22.74+/-0.36)x10(6) BB decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric e(+)e(-) collider. We find B (B0-->K(*0)gamma) = [4.23+/-0.40(stat)+/-0.22(syst)]x10(-5), B(B+-->K(*+)gamma) = [3.83+/-0.62(stat)+/-0.22(syst)]x10(-5) and constrain the CP-violating charge asymmetry to be -0.170K(*)gamma)

We measure the branching fractions of the Ψ(2S) meson to the leptonic final states e+e- and μ+μ- relative to that for Ψ(2S)→J/Ψπ_. The method uses Ψ(2S) mesons produced in the decay of B mesons at the Y(45) resonance in a data sample collected with the BABAR detector at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. Using previous measurements for the Ψ(2S) →J/Ψπ+π- branching fraction, we determine the e+e- and π+π- branching fractions to be 0.0078±0.0009±0.0008 and 0.0067±0. 0008±0.0007, respectively. © 2001 The American Physical Society.

New measurements of (Formula presented) and (Formula presented) meson production rates from B decays and from (Formula presented) continuum events near the (Formula presented) resonance are presented. Using 20.8 (Formula presented) of data on the (Formula presented) resonance and 2.6 (Formula presented) off-resonance, we find the inclusive branching fractions (Formula presented) and (Formula presented) where the first error is statistical, the second is systematic, and t he third is due to the (Formula presented) branching fraction uncertainty. The production cross sections (Formula presented) and (Formula presented) are measured at center-of-mass energies about 40 MeV below the (Formula presented) mass. The branching fractions (Formula presented) and (Formula presented) are determined from the (Formula presented) momentum spectra. The mass difference (Formula presented) is also measured. © 2002 The American Physical Society.

We present a measurement of the decay amplitudes in B-->J/psiK*(892) channels using 20.7 fb(-1) of data collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at PEP-II. We measure a P-wave fraction R(perpendicular) = (16.0 +/- 3.2 +/- 1.4)% and a longitudinal polarization fraction (59.7 +/- 2.8 +/- 2.4)%. The measurement of a relative phase that is neither 0 nor pi, phi = 2.50 +/- 0.20 +/-0.08 radians, favors a departure from the factorization hypothesis. Although the decay B-->/psiK(pi) proceeds mainly via K*(892), there is also evidence for K2*(1430) and K(pi) S-wave contributions.
