Aims. As a sub-Uranus-mass low-density planet, GJ 3470b has been found to show a flat featureless transmission spectrum in the infrared and a tentative Rayleigh scattering slope in the optical. We conducted an optical transmission spectroscopy project to assess the impacts of stellar activity and to determine whether or not GJ 3470b hosts a hydrogen-rich gas envelop. Methods. We observed three transits with the low-resolution OSIRIS spectrograph at the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias, and one transit with the high-resolution UVES spectrograph at the 8.2 m Very Large Telescope. Results. From the high-resolution data, we find that the difference of the Ca II H+K lines in- and out-of-transit is only 0.67 +/- 0.22%, and determine a magnetic filling factor of about 10-15%. From the low-resolution data, we present the first optical transmission spectrum in the 435-755 nm band, which shows a slope consistent with Rayleigh scattering. Conclusions. After exploring the potential impacts of stellar activity in our observations, we confirm that Rayleigh scattering in an extended hydrogen/helium atmosphere is currently the best explanation. Further high-precision observations that simultaneously cover optical and infrared bands are required to answer whether or not clouds and hazes exist at high-altitude., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Optical and electrical control of the nuclear spin system allows enhancing the sensitivity of NMR applications and spin-based information storage and processing. Dynamic nuclear polarization in semiconductors is commonly achieved in the presence of a stabilizing external magnetic field. Here we report efficient optical pumping of nuclear spins at zero magnetic field in strain free GaAs quantum dots. The strong interaction of a single, optically injected electron spin with the nuclear spins acts as a stabilizing, effective magnetic field (Knight field) on the nuclei. We optically tune the Knight field amplitude and direction. In combination with a small transverse magnetic field, we are able to control the longitudinal and transverse component of the nuclear spin polarization in the absence of lattice strain i.e. nuclear quadrupole effects, as reproduced by our model calculations., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

We demonstrate bias control of the hyperfine coupling between a single electron in an InAs quantum dot and the surrounding nuclear spins monitored through the positively charged exciton X+ emission. In applied longitudinal magnetic fields we vary simultaneously the correlation time of the hyperfine interaction and the nuclear spin relaxation time and thereby the amplitude of the achieved dynamic nuclear polarization under optical pumping conditions. In applied transverse magnetic fields a change in the applied bias allows to switch from the anomalous Hanle effect to the standard electron spin depolarization curves., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We present a microscopic theory of the magnetic field induced mixing of heavy-hole states +/- 3/2 in GaAs droplet dots grown on (111)A substrates. The proposed theoretical model takes into account the striking dot shape with trigonal symmetry revealed in atomic force microscopy. Our calculations of the hole states are carried out within the Luttinger Hamiltonian formalism, supplemented with allowance for the triangularity of the confining potential. They are in quantitative agreement with the experimentally observed polarization selection rules, emission line intensities and energy splittings in both longitudinal and transverse magnetic fields for neutral and charged excitons in all measured single dots., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

In photoluminescence spectra of symmetric [111] grown GaAs/AlGaAs quantum dots in longitudinal magnetic fields applied along the growth axis we observe in addition to the expected bright states also nominally dark transitions for both charged and neutral excitons. We uncover a strongly non-monotonous, sign changing field dependence of the bright neutral exciton splitting resulting from the interplay between exchange and Zeeman effects. Our theory shows quantitatively that these surprising experimental results are due to magnetic-field-induced \pm 3/2 heavy-hole mixing, an inherent property of systems with C_3v point-group symmetry., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We demonstrate by spin quantum beat spectroscopy that in undoped symmetric (110)-oriented GaAs/AlGaAs single quantum wells even a symmetric spatial envelope wavefunction gives rise to an asymmetric in-plane electron Land\'e-g-factor. The anisotropy is neither a direct consequence of the asymmetric in-plane Dresselhaus splitting nor of the asymmetric Zeeman splitting of the hole bands but is a pure higher order effect that exists as well for diamond type lattices. The measurements for various well widths are very well described within 14 x 14 band k.p theory and illustrate that the electron spin is an excellent meter variable to map out the internal -otherwise hidden- symmetries in two dimensional systems. Fourth order perturbation theory yields an analytical expression for the strength of the g-factor anisotropy, providing a qualitative understanding of the observed effects.

We exploit the influence of the Coulomb interaction between electrons and holes on the electron spin relaxation in a (110)-GaAs quantum well to unveil excitonic signatures within the many particle electron-hole system. The temperature dependent time- and polarization-resolved photoluminescence measurements span five decades of carrier density, comprise the transition from localized excitons over quasi free excitons to an electron-hole plasma, and reveal strong excitonic signatures even at relatively high densities and temperatures.
