Abstract

Introduction: A Comprehensive Study of disease pattern in mass gathering of Simhasth Fair in Ujjain city was conducted. Objective of the study were to know the disease trends in a huge event, to know the risk factor triggered by the surveillance system, to assess the importance of health planning and monitoring in a mass gathering and to provide a pathway to future endowers. To provide complete physical, mental and social well being of the pilgrims, state health department established all necessary arrangements. Methods: The period of the data collection of the study was 21 April to 22 May 2016. A stipulated proforma was designed for daily reporting. It was insured that all outbreaks must reported immediately. Analysis and forecasting of the data would be done simultaneously. The data collected on the daily basis. Data were compiled and validated every day. Results: A total of 3,21.841 patients were screened in OPD and 19178 patients were treated as IPD. Highest number of cases recorded of fever i.e. 18,700 (6.95%), followed by acute respiratory infection (ARI), 15,834 (5.89%), Acute diarrheal disease (ADD) 14,715 (5.47%), skin disease 3089 (1.15), heat stroke 1225 (0.46%) and rest shared by injuries 1143 (0.42%), conjunctivitis 823 (0.31%), bacillary dysentery 320 (0.12%), malaria 62 (0.02%), Jaundice/Viral hepatitis 58 (0.02%), chicken pox 21 (0.01%). The cases of dog bite were 504 (0.19%), snake bite 6 (0.01%), Burn 84 (0.03%) and drowning 18 (0.01%). A better planning and forecasting system can provide a solid background to reduce the disease in large gathering.

18. Synthesis characterization and in vitro drug release from acrylamide and sodium alginate based superporous hydrogel devices.

Abstract

Objective: Present investigation was aimed at developing gastroretentive superporous hydrogels (SPHs) having desired mechanical characteristics with sustained release. Materials and Methods: The acrylamide based SPHs of various generations (1st, 2nd and 3rd) were synthesized by gas blowing technique. The prepared SPHs were evaluated for swelling, mechanical strength studies and scanning electron microscopy studies. Verapamil hydrochloride was loaded into selected SPHs by aqueous drug loading method and characterized via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (X-RD),differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and in vitro drug release studies. Results: SPHs of third generation were observed to have desired mechanical strength with sufficient swelling properties. Integrity of the drug was maintained in hydrogel polymeric network as indicated by FTIR, X-RD, and DSC and NMR studies. Initially, fast drug release (up to 60%) was observed in 30 min in formulation batches containing pure drug only (A, C and E), which was further sustained untill 24 h. Discussion: The increase in mechanical strength was due to the chemical cross-linking of secondary polymer in hydrogel network. The initial burst release was due to the presence of free drug at the surface and later sustained drug release was due to diffusion of entrapped drug in polymeric network. Significant decrease in drug release was observed by the addition of hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose. Conclusion: SPH interpenetrating networks with fast swelling and sufficient mechanical strength were prepared, which can be potentially exploited for designing gastroretentive drug delivery devices. Abstract

The present study has been carried out to assess the nutrient removal potential of two different algal species in immobilized alginate beads for nutrient removal from wastewater. Chlorella minutissima and wild algae isolated from a local dairy waste treatment plant were used in the study. The percentage removal of nutrients (ammonia-N, phosphate and nitrate-N) by algal alginate beads at different time intervals in an aerated photobioreactor has been investigated. Percentage removal of ammonia-N (94% in 48 h) was higher for C. minutissima while dairy waste isolated algae species showed significant removal efficiency for phosphate (100% in 48 h) and nitrate-N (62.5% in 48 h). The study showed that immobilized Chlorella minutissima and isolated wild algae beads were significantly efficient in removing ammonia-N and phosphate from local sewage wastewater.
