A critical review of lab and field measurement methodologies, harmonization in measuring techniques, and modelling of skid resistance of asphalt concrete pavement have been provided. Although several past studies have provided literature review on general topics of skid resistance, to the best of the author’s knowledge, none of them have compressively covered the topic considering the status & requirements of developing nations. There has been significant development in speed with the improvement in computational facilities. In modern times, with the improvement in infrastructure quality in developing nations, permitted speeds have also drastically increased. To avoid skid-related accidents, it is important to develop good practices in maintaining sufficient skid resistance. The requirements and the availability of technology might be significantly different in developing nations. The suitability and limitations of various methods used for capturing the skid characteristics of the surface have been outlined. The harmonization in skid resistance measurement using laboratory and field-testing methods has been summarized. Correlation analysis of various in-situ and laboratory test data has been made to maintain a better harmony of measurement either in the field or in the laboratory. In the subsequent sections, progress in the modelling approach (analytical to numerical) has been discussed in brief. Computational capabilities of an analytical and numerical modelling approach for predicting pavement skid resistance characteristics have been reviewed. These models have been developed to consider complex attributes of tire pavement interactions like hydroplaning, temperature rise in the tire, mix morphology, tire inflation, and vehicle acceleration and deceleration for predicting skid resistance. These attributes of skid resistance have been discussed in detail and presented a basic overview of the model development process which is missing in past review studies. Few recent studies on skid resistance measurement and modelling to highlight the use of new technology and improvements over conventional techniques have been presented in the manuscript which has not been reviewed earlier. Critical factors affecting the skid resistance model like hydroplaning, tire-related parameters, temperature, and surface texture have been highlighted in this manuscript. Few key research directions have been suggested as the scope of future study to predict a more reliable skid resistance model.

Asphalt mixtures with high porosities (known as porous asphalt (PA) mixes) are becoming a popular choice among road authorities as it provides better skid resistance while also reducing tire-pavement noises. Towards the design and manufacture of PA mix pavement, the evaluation of the mechanical properties of PA mixes is of great importance. To predict the mechanical properties of PA mixes, micromechanical models have been considered as an effective tool. In most research studies, continuum-based micromechanical models, i.e. the Self-consistent model, the Mori-Tanaka model, etc. are widely used to predict the stiffness of asphalt mixtures. However, the limitation of these models is that they cannot describe the characteristics of individual particles and thus they cannot provide accurate predictions. On the other hand, the discrete-based micromechanical model (DBMM) which simulates a granular material as an assembly of bonded particles seems to be a promising alternative. Limited research studies have focused on studying the utilization and the applicability of this model for asphalt mixes. Therefore, this paper aims to propose a framework to use DBMM and to evaluate its performance in estimating a PA mix’s stiffness. Based on the obtained results, both the merits and limitations of this model were highlighted.

The Fibre Bragg Gratings (FBG) technology based on integrated photonics, offers specific benefits including thermal mapping, damage detection, shape- and distributed sensing. This makes it useful for determining pavement behaviour during extreme weather conditions e.g. freeze-thaw cycles when harsh winter conditions could damage the asphalt surfacing layer. However, the harsh construction environment and traffic loading highlights the high-risk challenge of installing the sensor into the asphalt layer in a noninvasive manner so that the key parameters are accurately measured during and after construction.

The surface texture of the pavement plays a very important role in driving the frictional properties at the tire rubber-pavement interface. Particularly, the hysteretic friction due to viscoelastic deformations of rubber depends mainly on the pavement surface texture. In the present paper, the effect of micromechanical pavement surface morphology on rubber block friction was brought in by comparing the friction results for three different asphalt mix morphological surfaces, named stone mastic asphalt (SMA), ultra-thin surfacing (UTS) and porous asphalt (PA). The asphalt surface morphologies of these mixes were captured by using an X-ray tomographer, from which the resulting images micromechanical finite element (FE) meshes for SMA, UTS and PA pavements were developed by means of the SimpleWare software. In the FE model, the rubber and asphalt binder were modeled as viscoelastic (VE) materials and the formulation was given in the large deformation framework. FE simulations were then carried out by using contact algorithm between rubber and the road surface. It was observed that the rubber friction inversely varies with the sliding speed and positively varies with the pressure for all the pavement morphological and stiffness conditions. Furthermore, it was observed that the highly porous pavement surface results in large dissipation of energy, hence, large rubber friction which shows that the mix characteristics of pavements have a significant effect on rubber friction.

The present investigation highlights the feasibility of a polymer grafting process to enhance the durability and flame retardancy of rice straw towards application as a low cost roofing material. The success of this grafting methodology was perceived to depend upon a bi-step pre-treatment process encompassing delignification and inorganic salts dispersion. Subsequently free radical polymer grafting of acrylonitrile onto rice straw was implemented by immersion mechanism initiated by oxalic acid-potassium permanganate initiator. The percentage of grafting, limiting oxygen index (LOI), biodegradability of the grafted rice straw and grafting yield percentage was estimated to be 57%, 27%, 0.02% and 136.67%, respectively. The weight loss of polymer grafted rice straw implied its less biodegradability over raw straw. Thus, the process of grafting contrived in the present analysis can be a promising and reliable technique for the efficient utilization of rice straw as an inexpensive roofing element through the augmentation of its durability and flame retardancy.

Background: An innovative and interactive real-world environment can be presented with augmented reality (AR) that comprises digital visual elements, audio, or other sensory information delivered via technology to enhance one's experience. AR has numerous potential applications in various everyday fields. The education sector is one such arena where AR has been implemented prominently globally. AR in education can impact active students' learning to memorize effectively and can persuade them to engage in a meaningful process of learning. Objectives: This article presents a bibliometric analysis of some recent applications of AR, emphasizing the potential effects, challenges, and trends of AR in the education sector for the past 15 years. Methods: A total of 3909 documents published during 2006-2020 were retrieved from the Scopus database for analysis. The bibliometric analysis included document types, subject categorization, document growth, as well as top contributing sources, countries, authors, and funding sponsors. It also analyses keywords, abstracts, titles, and characteristics of the most cited documents. Additionally, it provides a brief account of the challenges for AR adaptation in education. Results and conclusions: The findings uncover an increased use of AR to promote enhanced learning in the education field. This work will provide the survey, limitations, and drawbacks, as well as open usability and technical issues that may represent new challenges for future research in this field.

Governments, regulatory bodies and road authorities all push for and promote sustainability. Contractors respond with strategies to reduce their carbon footprints. Besides optimising their asphalt production and logistics processes, companies are investing in the development of low energy asphalt mixes. Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) is such an asphalt mixture produced at lower temperatures, thereby requiring less energy. It has recently become very popular in the Netherlands with various types of WMA products being developed by construction companies. In essence, the asphalt mix is modified to reduce the viscosity and the mixture is therefore more flexible at lower temperatures enabling more time available for a very important part of the construction process viz. COMPACTION. While essential research effort has been put into developing techniques for adjudicating WMA, optimising their composition and rationalising the design; less effort has been put into the operational handling and consequences regarding energy consumption and durability. In short, little is known about actual energy consumption during the asphalt compaction process. By placing RFID sensors into the asphalt mixture, temperatures and pressures can be measured during laboratory testing and construction, but also during usage and maintenance of the road where additional RFID sensors can be added to measure weather conditions and other long-term parameters.

BackgroundIDH-mutant diffuse gliomas are heterogeneous, and improved methods for optimal patient therapeutic stratification are needed. PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling activity can drive disease progression and potential therapeutic inhibitors of the pathway are available. Yet, the prevalence of PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway activity in IDH-mutant glioma is unclear and few robust strategies to assess activity in clinical samples exist.MethodsPI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway activity was evaluated in a retrospective cohort of 132 IDH-mutant diffuse glioma (91 astrocytoma and 41 oligodendroglioma, 1p/19q-codeleted) through quantitative multiplex immunoprofiling using phospho-specific antibodies for PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway members, PRAS40, RPS6, and 4EBP1, and tumor-specific anti-IDH1 R132H. Expression levels were correlated with genomic evaluation of pathway intrinsic genes and univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to evaluate the relationship with outcome.ResultsTumor-specific expression of p-PRAS40, p-RPS6, and p-4EBP1 was common in IDH-mutant diffuse glioma and increased with CNS WHO grade from 2 to 3. Genomic analysis predicted pathway activity in 21.7% (13/60) while protein evaluation identified active PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling in 56.6% (34/60). Comparison of expression in male versus female patients suggested sexual dimorphism. PurposeThe immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment present in the majority of diffuse glioma limits therapeutic response to immunotherapy. As the determinants of the glioma-associated immune response are relatively poorly understood, the study of glioma with more robust tumor-associated immune responses may be particularly useful to identify novel immunomodulatory factors that can promote T-cell effector function in glioma.Experimental designWe used multiplex immune-profiling, proteomic profiling, and gene expression analysis to define the tumor-associated immune response in two molecular subtypes of glioma and identify factors that may modulate this response. We then used patient-derived glioma cultures and an immunocompetent murine model for malignant glioma to analyze the ability of tumor-intrinsic factors to promote a CD8+ T-cell response.ResultsAs compared with isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH)-mutant astrocytoma, MAPK-activated pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma (PXA) harbored increased numbers of activated cytotoxic CD8+ T cells and Iba1+ microglia/macrophages, increased MHC class I expression, enrichment of genes associated with antigen presentation and processing, and increased tumor cell secretion of the chemokine CXCL14. CXCL14 promoted activated CD8+ T-cell chemotaxis in vitro, recruited tumor-infiltrating CD8+ T cells in vivo, and prolonged overall survival in a cytotoxic T-cell-dependent manner. The immunomodulatory molecule B7-H3 was also highly expressed in PXA.ConclusionsWe identify the MAPK-activated lower grade astrocytoma PXA as having an immune-rich tumor microenvironment and suggest this tumor may be particularly vulnerable to immunotherapeutic modulation. We also identify CXCL14 as an important determinant of the glioma-associated immune microenvironment, sufficient to promote an antitumor CD8+ T-cell response.

Signaling from multiple receptor tyrosine kinases (RTK) contributes to therapeutic resistance in glioblastoma (GBM). Heparan sulfate (HS), present on cell surfaces and in the extracellular matrix, regulates cell signaling via several mechanisms. To investigate the role for HS in promoting RTK signaling in GBM, we generated neural progenitor cells deficient for HS by knockout of the essential HS-biosynthetic enzyme Ext1, and studied tumor initiation and progression. HS-null cells had decreased proliferation, invasion, and reduced activation of multiple RTKs compared with control. In vivo tumor establishment was significantly decreased, and rate of tumor growth reduced with HS-deficient cells implanted in an HS-poor microenvironment. To investigate if HS regulates RTK activation through platelet-derived growth factor receptor α (PDGFRα) signaling, we removed cell surface HS in patient-derived GBM lines and identified reduced cell surface PDGF-BB ligand. Reduced ligand levels were associated with decreased phosphorylation of PDGFRα, suggesting HS promotes ligand-receptor interaction. Using human GBM tumorspheres and a murine GBM model, we show that ligand-mediated signaling can partially rescue cells from targeted RTK inhibition and that this effect is regulated by HS. Indeed, tumor cells deficient for HS had increased sensitivity to EGFR inhibition in vitro and in vivo. IMPLICATIONS: Our study shows that HS expressed on tumor cells and in the tumor microenvironment regulates ligand-mediated signaling, promoting tumor cell proliferation and invasion, and these factors contribute to decreased tumor cell response to targeted RTK inhibition.

Abstract PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway activation is a common mechanism of tumor progression in diffuse lower grade glioma. Robust and accurate biomarkers are needed to stratify patients for therapies targeting this pathway. To investigate the potential of phosphoprotein quantification to provide a direct and functional pathway readout, we analyzed 90 tumors from 83 patients with IDH-mutant diffuse glioma. The cohort comprised 50 IDH-mutant astrocytomas, 40 IDH-mutant and 1p/19q-codeleted oligodendrogliomas, 7 of whom had paired samples from initial diagnosis and recurrence. We developed and validated a pipeline using multiplex immunofluorescence to quantify tumor cell-specific phospho-protein expression of 3 pathway nodes, ribosomal protein S6 (RPS6), PRAS40, and 4E-BP1. In oligodendroglioma the fraction of tumor cells expressing each of the three phosphorylated proteins increased with tumor grade (p< 0.05). Comparing tumors at initial diagnosis (n=48) and at recurrence (n=42), p-RPS6 and p-PRAS40 increased in tumor cells (p< 0.05) and there was an overall increase in intertumoral heterogeneity of signaling activity at recurrence (p< 0.04). Analysis of paired samples demonstrated increased signaling pathway activity in a subset at recurrence. Robust signaling activity, defined as a phospho-positive tumor cell fraction ≥ median for all three phosphoproteins, was identified in 71.4% of grade 3 IDH-mutant astrocytoma(5/7) and 45.4% of grade 3 IDH-mutant, 1p/19q-codeleted oligodendroglioma(5/11). In a subset of cases analyzed by targeted NGS, robust signaling pathway activity was identified in 38%(11/29) at the protein level while genetic alterations predicted to activate the pathway were present in only 17.2% (5/29). Our results demonstrate robust PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling activity in a significant fraction of IDH-mutant diffuse glioma, an association with increasing tumor grade in oligodendroglioma, and an increase at recurrence in both oligodendroglioma and astrocytoma. Overall, our data suggest that quantitative evaluation of phosphoproteins may be a sensitive method to detect PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway activity and may be useful for patient stratification.
