Abstract

Quantitative analysis of the events of synchronous references in the research papers followed throughout the publishing career of an individual scientist revealed interesting highlights on the knowledge-generating-system. In the case study of Homi Jehangir Bhabha first quinquennium and fifth quinquennium of his research career had low Self-references; third quinquennium and fourth quinquennium had moderate Self-references; whereas second quinquennium had highest Self-references. The two major clusters of Self-references occurring during the second and third quinquennium were indicators of active periods of knowledgegenerating and faster communications.

Abstract

Quantitative and qualitative analysis with graphic representation of the publication productivity of a scientist facilitates easy and clear perception about the work of a scientist. Bhabha’s scientific work spanned over more than three decades (1933-1967) during which he published 104 publications, which could be classified into nine fields: Interaction of Radiation with Matter (4), Quantum Electrodynamics (5), Mathematical Physics (2), Cosmic Ray Physics (18), Elementary Particle Physics (14), Field Theory (15), General Physics (2), Nuclear Physics (4) and General (40). The highest number of publications (6) were published in 1941, 1945 and 1964 respectively. The average number of publications published per year was 3.05. His productivity coefficient was 0.05 which is a clear indicates that his publication productivity was quite consistent throughout his scientific career. He was single author in 79 of his publications and the main author in 24 publications indicates that he always preferred to work himself and lead the team as ‘mentor’. Bhabha had 22 collaborators during the period. Team of research collaborators working with a successful scientist documents the sociological aspect of history of science while generating knowledge by a leader in a domain. Bhabha became a citable author in 1937. Bhabha received 1211 citations to his 30 publications out of 104 publications. Out of 104, 74 publications did not receive any citations. Out of 74 publications, 40 publications dealt subjects mainly of general interest. Bhabha’s 86.66 percent of cited publications received their first citations within four years of their publication indicates that his publications were noticed immediately and had direct impact among the fellow researchers working all over the world. His overall citation rate was 11.64 per cited publication. The highest citations 389 were received to the domain ‘Cosmic ray physics’. The highest number of citations received were 45 in 1938. His self-citations were only 24 (1.98%) and citations by others were 1187 (98.02%). The highest self citations were six in 1946. Bhabha’s mean diachronous self-citation rate was 1.98. The highest citation rate 28.4 was to the domain ‘Quantum electrodynamics. His single authored publications have received the highest number 863 (71.26%) of citations. Bhabha’s five publications have been cited more than 100 times each. His publications have been cited by the authors working in various diverse fields like nuclear physics, mathematical physics, instrumentation, optics, geophysics and geochemistry, condensed matter physics, applied physics, electrical and electronic engineering, mechanical engineering etc., indicating a very diverse influence and impact of Bhabha’s publications. Bhabha’s publications have also been cited by the Nobel laureates like V. L. Ginzberg, Wolfgang Pauli, H. A. Bethe, M. Born, W. Bothe, E. P. Wigner, H. Yukawa, P. M. S. Blackett and C. N. Yang which is an indication of his originality of ideas and high quality of publications.

Abstract

This paper analyses the growth and development of Bibliometric and scientometric research in physics and engineering field as per INSPEC database (1999-2008). During 1999-2008 a total of 1677 papers were published in the field. The average number of publications published per year was 167.7 the highest number of papers 296 were published in 2006. Authorship and collaboration trend was towards multi-authored papers. There were 1100 collaborative papers. National Institute of Science, Technology & Development Studies, New Delhi (India), and College of Information Science & Technology, Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA (USA) were the highly contributed institutions with 23 publications each followed by Sch. of Comput. & Inf. Tech., Wolverhampton Univ. (UK) with 20 publications, University of Western (Fac. of Inf. & Media Studies), Ontario (Canada) with 19 publications, Office of Naval Res., Arlington (USA) with 17 publications and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (Scientific Information Resource Div.), Mumbai (India) with 14 publications. The most prolific authors were: Thelwall-M (Univ. of Wolverhampton, Wolverhampton, UK) with 32 publications, Rousseau-R (Ind. Sci. & Technol., KHBO, Oostende, Belgium) with 29 publications, Egghe-L (Hasselt Univ., Diepenbeek, Belgium) with 25 publications. The most preferred journals by the Bibliometric and scientometric researchers were: Scientometrics with 291 publications, Journal-ofthe- American-Society-for-Information-Science with 149 publications, Journal-of-the-China-Societyfor-Scientific-and-Technical-Information with 55 publications and Information-Processing-and-Management with 52 publications. The high frequency keywords were: citation-analysis (265), bibliometrics (102), bibliometric-analysis (100), Internet (75), information-retrieval (69), informationscience (59).

Abstract

Garfield stated that review articles often serve as surrogates for earlier literature, thus avoiding extensive bibliographies. The present study has focused on the review articles written by researchers in India and included in Science Citation Index during the period 2000-2005. The study has aimed at analysing chronological growth of these review articles; authorship pattern and author productivity; authors’ affiliations and collaborations; journals publishing review articles; subject contents of the review articles; keywords associated with the review articles; and synchronous references in the review articles.

Abstract

The frontiers of physics related e-print archives (1994-2002) at http://www.arxiv.org/archives/physics web service are explored from 7770 submissions. No. of e-prints in the six research disciplines besides physics (5390) were: Condensed matter(754), Quantum physics(279), Astrophysics(222), Chemical physics(129), High energy physics Phenomenology(118), and High energy physics-Theory(100)). By keyword contents following major sub-fields have high frequency: Atomic physics(1258), General physics(1121), Chemical physics(892), Accelerator physics(769), Optics(686), Biological physics(674), and Computational physics(607). Interdomainary co-word cluster analysis revealed higher e-print contents for: Classical physics-General physics(108), Quantum physics-Optics(53), and High energy physics (Phenomenology)Atomic physics(49). Prominent contributors were B. G. Sidharth (India), V. V. Flambaum (Australia), Antonina N. Fedorova (Russia), and Michael G. Zeitlin (Russia).

50. Synthesis, Characterization and Magnetic properties of Nanoparticles of Cobalt Doped Ferrite

Abstract

Ferrites are ceramic like material having magnetic properties which are being utilized for several applications. Cobalt ferrites are hard magnetic material with high coercivity. In our study Crystalline, Magnetic nanoparticles of Cobalt ferrite Co0.8Fe2.2O4 were synthesized by Sol Gel Method using ferric chloride and cobalt nitrate with NaOH as a reactant. Structural characteristics of samples were determined by X-Ray diffraction, FESEM and TEM. Particle size found 14.26nm by using Debye Scherrer method. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) studies revealed nano-crystalline nature of the sample. AFM showed surface roughness. Magnetic properties were investigated using VSM (vibrating sample magnetometer). Various magnetic parameters such as saturation magnetization (Ms) and remanence (Mr) and coercivity (Hc) are obtained from the hysteresis loops. The calculated value of saturation magnetization in our study for Cobalt ferrite was found lower than the value reported for the bulk. The coercivity was found very high which indicate that the nanoparticles exhibit ferromagnetic behavior.
