Abstract

The unutilized and unproductive lands in alkaline and waterlogged areas can be used for income and employment generation through fisheries activities. Apart from the income generation, the reclamation of the land is also possible if the scientific practices are followed. Karnataka is bestowed with vast variety of water resources for fisheries activities, saline, alkaline and waterlogged areas are also present is large extent in the state where the land is unused in majority of the affected areas. In this study, Krishna command area was selected for demonstration of composite fish culture using alkaline and waterlogged lands. Four beneficiaries were identified and empowered on using of these affected areas for fish culture. They were provided with quality carp seed and 2 tons of supplementary feed to each and scientific fish culture practices were demonstrated. Meanwhile, the water quality, fish survival, health and growth were monitored throughout the demonstration period. The pH of the water gradually decreased from 8.9 to 7.5, majorly due to addition of organic load to the pond. Other water quality parameters were scientifically monitored and they exhibited a decreasing trend with optimal limits favoring to fish culture. Catla, sliver carp, grass carp, common carp and amur carp showed a better growth rate with others being in moderate condition. The total mean fish production was found to be 3.8 t/acre from the demonstration sites and with the mean gross revenue of 4.25 lakhs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Polyculture of amur common carp with catla and rohu was compared with common carp, catla and rohu polyculture in the earthen ponds of Mysuru district in Karnataka. Stocking density of 1 no./mt2 was used in two treatment sets with periodical water quality monitoring. Six essential water quality parameters were monitored throughout the study period and with scientific management practices, the water parameters remained in optimal limits supporting the fish growth. Amur common carp with catla and rohu yielded the better yield and survival rate compared to the common carp poly culture. The SGR (Specific Growth Rate) was also high followed by common carp and catla. The mean weight of the Amur common carp was found to be 1506 gm in T1 whereas, common carp was 1286 gm in T2. The Amur Common Carp also exhibited highest survival rate out of all the species in both the treatments with 84.88%. The yield data also reviled that Amur common carp polyculture is 10.53% more compared to the common carp polyculture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Utilization of waterlogged areas for fish culture in Cauvery command area of Karnataka. For Cauvery command area under waterlogged condition, the three beneficiaries were provided with quality carp seed and 2 tons of supplementary feed to each. Meanwhile, the water quality, fish survival, health and growth were monitored throughout the study period. Scientific fish farming using the water logged area was monitored throughout the study period and the farmers were demonstrated with importance of the stage wise management. The hardness of fish pond water reduced by 7.14%, from 280 to 260 mg/l during the demonstration period and there was reduction in the total dissolved solids (TDS) from 350.60 to 200.44 mg/l and was evident by 42.82% reduction. Salinity content of pond water showed little fluctuation during different months of culture. Among the different fish species, Amur common carp recorded highest weight (1706g) followed by Common carp (1486 g) and Catla (1108 g) and the total fish production from one acre demonstration pond was 3816 kg with the total gross revenue realized by the farmers of Rs. 4.96 lakhs. Theoretical Quantum Information Processing (QIP) has matured from the use of qubits to the use of qudits (systems having states> 2). Where as most of the experimental implementations have been performed using qubits, little experimental work has been carried out using qudits as yet. In this paper we demonstrate experimental realization of a qutrit system by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), utilizing deuterium (spin-1) nuclei partially oriented in liquid crystalline phase. Abstract

Neem wood used many structural applications due to its coarse grain with interlocking fibers leads to excellent mechanical properties with a very good life. However, wood structures are exposed to various environmental conditions, so it is necessary to investigate the effect of time and temperature for different stacking sequences. This paper aims to explore the importance of time and temperature of neem wood veneer epoxy composites at various stacking sequence and interfacial bonding. The Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer used to study short term creep at a nitrogen environment using a three-point bending condition. The result shows neat neem wood veneer exhibit a higher percentage of strain as compared to neem wood epoxy composites. On the other hand, the stacking sequence having significant changes in dynamic mechanical and creep studies, storage modulus (G') & loss modulus (G") increases along the wood fiber direction with minor load-bearing capacity in lateral direction. Abstract

In this paper, a multilayer perceptron neural network has been used to represent temperature measurement during rotary drilling of five types of rock samples. To forecast the temperature at various thermocouple depths, the experimentally collected data was standardized. Indicators of model performance was also obtained in order to assess the correctness of the model. One hidden layer and one output layer were employed with MLPANN, which has ten input parameters (bit diameter (DD), Spindle Speed (SS), Penetration Rate (PR), thrust, and torque) and rock properties. Levenberg Marquardt learning algorithm with transfer function of logsig is the most optimal neuron number of 10-16-1 was successfully forecasting the temperature with a correlation of 0.9936 and 0.9941 for training and testing algorithm during drilling after analysis based on the trial-anderror approach to identify the optimum algorithm. Ten input parameters, a logsig sigmoid transfer function, and the trainlm algorithm in this study provide good prediction ability with tolerable accuracy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Present work is to examine the effects of tool rotational and tool travel parameters on Friction Stir Welded (FSW) dissimilar joints mechanical and microstructural characteristics for 3 mm thick pure copper and 6061 aluminium alloy plates. Welds were made with a cylindrical tapered pin to achieve this goal. The tool rotational speed and tool travel speed are the primary FSW factors considered in this study. Copper plates were kept on the joint's advancing side. Tensile and bending tests are carried out to assess the tensile and bending strength of weld joints in accordance with ASTM standards. Vicker's microhardness tests were carried out in the transverse direction of the weld to check the hardness distribution in weld nuggets. An experimental analysis shows that the best tensile strength 98 MPa and bending stress 16.6 MPa are achieved at tool rotating speeds of 1000 rpm and 62 mm/min, correspondingly. The larger concentration of copper particles in the aluminium region is mostly to blame for this. For 1400 rpm and 62 mm/min, a nugget zone hardness of 190 HV is attained. The presence of more Cu particles on the Al side is evident in SEM pictures, and the higher tensile and bending strength is mostly attributable to the Cu particles covering the Al material in the weld zone. According to X-ray analysis, the synthesis of intermetallic complexes such Al4Cu9, Al2Cu, AlCu, and AlCu4 explains the chemical reaction and phase transformation at the interfaces. The maximum strength values improved because of these intermetallic compounds' proper metallurgical bonding and thinnest thickness. According to fracture analysis, joints with higher strengths have intergranular fracture, while joints with lower strengths experience brittle fracture on both aluminium and copper joints. 39. Extensive Sharing of COI and CYB Haplotypes in the Reef-building Staghorn Coral (Acropora spp.) in Sabah, North Borneo

Abstract

The relationship between zooplankton community structure and selected environmental conditions was investigated by simultaneous two-day consecutive sampling in the waters overlying Coral and sand sites off Sibu Island and a Seagrass site off Tinggi Island, Johor, Malaysia. A total of 129 taxa were identified, 60 non-Copepod taxa and 69 Copepod species in all samples. Uni- and multi-variate analyses reveal distinct Coral, sand, Seagrass Copepod assemblages with indicator Copepod species and attributes of their size fractions. Small fraction (100–335 µm) samples contained greatest number of individuals, few rare species and were densest at onshore depths, and the opposite for large fraction (>335 µm) samples but were densest at nighttime and most species rich in the Coral site at night. Higher species diversity at offshore stations is due likely to ecotonal effects of overlapping oceanic and nearshore communities. This study demonstrates the usefulness of uni- and multi-variate analyses in identifying patterns in Zooplankton community structure in representative shallow tropical habitats, and the need for accurate Zooplankton taxonomy, nighttime and daytime and onshore and offshore sampling, and size fractionation of samples.
