When the coupling of a quantum system to its environment is non-negligible, its steady state is known to deviate from the textbook Gibbs state. The Bloch-Redfield quantum master equation, one of the most widely adopted equations to solve the open quantum dynamics, cannot predict all the deviations of the steady state of a quantum system from the Gibbs state. In this paper, for a generic spin-boson model, we use a higher-order quantum master equation (in system environment coupling strength) to analytically calculate all the deviations of the steady state of the quantum system up to second order in the coupling strength. We also show that this steady state is exactly identical to the corresponding generalized Gibbs state, the so-called quantum mean force Gibbs state, at arbitrary temperature. All these calculations are highly general, making them immediately applicable to a wide class of systems well modeled by the spin-Boson model, ranging from various condensed phase processes to quantum thermodynamics. Silicon photonics is a leading platform for realizing the vast numbers of physical qubits needed for useful quantum information processing because it leverages mature complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) manufacturing to integrate on-chip thousands of optical devices for generating and manipulating quantum states of light. A challenge to the practical operation and scale-up of silicon quantum-photonic integrated circuits, however, is the need to control their extreme sensitivity to process and temperature variations, free-carrier and self-heating nonlinearities, and thermal crosstalk. To date these challenges have been partially addressed using bulky off-chip electronics, sacrificing many benefits of a chip-scale platform. Here, we demonstrate the first electronic-photonic quantum system-on-chip (EPQSoC) consisting of quantum-correlated photon-pair sources stabilized via on-chip feedback control circuits, all fabricated in a high-volume 45nm CMOS microelectronics foundry. We use non-invasive photocurrent sensing in a tunable microring cavity photon-pair source to actively lock it to a fixed pump laser while operating in the quantum regime, enabling large scale microring-based quantum systems. In this first demonstration of such a capability, we achieve a high CAR of 134 with an ultra-low g(2)(0) of 0.021 at 2.2 kHz off-chip detected pair rate and 3.3 MHz/mW2 on-chip pair generation efficiency, and over 100 kHz off-chip detected pair rate at higher pump powers (1.5 MHz on-chip). These sources maintain stable quantum properties in the presence of temperature variations, operating reliably in practical settings with many adjacent devices creating thermal disturbances on the same chip. Such dense electronic-photonic integration enables implementation and control of quantum-photonic systems at the scale required for useful quantum information processing with CMOS-fabricated chips.

While researchers in both industry and academia are racing to build Quantum Computing (QC) platforms with viable performance and functionality, the environmental impacts of this endeavor, such as its carbon footprint, e-waste generation, mineral use, and water and energy consumption, remain largely unknown. A similar oversight occurred during the semiconductor revolution and continues to have disastrous consequences for the health of our planet. As we build the quantum computing stack from the ground up, it is crucial to comprehensively assess it through an environmental sustainability lens for its entire life-cycle: production, use, and disposal. In this paper, we highlight the need and challenges in establishing a QC sustainability benchmark that enables researchers to make informed architectural design decisions and celebrate the potential quantum environmental advantage. We propose a carbon-aware quantum computing (CQC) framework that provides the foundational methodology and open research questions for calculating the total life-cycle carbon footprint of a QC platform. Our call to action to the research community is the establishment of a new research direction known as, sustainable quantum computing that promotes both quantum computing for sustainability-oriented applications and the sustainability of quantum computing.

Interference between independently generated photons is a key step towards distributing entanglement over long distances, but it requires synchronization between the distantly-located photon sources. Synchronizing the clocks of such photon sources using coexisting two-way classical optical communications over the same fiber that transport the quantum photonic signals is a promising approach for achieving photon-photon interference over long distances, enabling entanglement distribution for quantum networking using the deployed fiber infrastructure. Here, we demonstrate photon-photon interference by observing the Hong-Ou-Mandel dip between two distantly-located sources: a weak coherent state source obtained by attenuating the output of a laser and a heralded single-photon source. We achieve a maximum dip visibility of $0.58 \pm 0.04$ when the two sources are connected via $4.3$ km of deployed fiber. Dip visibilities $>0.5$ are nonclassical and a first step towards achieving teleportation over the deployed fiber infrastructure. In our experiment, the classical optical communication is achieved with $-21$ dBm of optical signal launch power, which is used to synchronize the clocks in the two independent, distantly-located photon sources. The impact of spontaneous Raman scattering from the classical optical signals is mitigated by appropriate choice of the quantum and classical channel wavelengths. All equipment used in our experiment (the photon sources and the synchronization setup) is commercially available. Finally, our experiment represents a scalable approach to enabling practical quantum networking with commercial equipment and coexistence with classical communications in optical fiber.

The equilibrium state of a quantum system can deviate from the Gibbs state if the system-environment coupling is not weak. An analytical expression for this mean force Gibbs state (MFGS) is known in the ultrastrong coupling (USC) regime for the Caldeira-Leggett (CL) model that assumes a harmonic environment. Here, we derive analytical expressions for the MFGS in the USC regime for more general system-environment models. For all the generalized models considered here, we find the USC state to be diagonal in the basis set by the system-environment interaction, just like in the CL case. While for the generic model considered, the corresponding USC-MFGS state is found to alter from the CL-result, we do identify a class of models more general than the CL-model for which the CL-USC result remains unchanged. We also provide numerical verification for our results. The ability for quantum and conventional networks to operate in the same optical fibers would aid the deployment of quantum network technology on a large scale. Quantum teleportation is a fundamental operation in quantum networking, but has yet to be demonstrated in fibers populated with high-power conventional optical signals. Here we report to the best of our knowledge the first demonstration of quantum teleportation over fibers carrying conventional telecommunications traffic. Quantum state transfer is achieved over a 30.2-km fiber carrying 400-Gbps C-band classical traffic with a Bell state measurement performed at the fiber's midpoint. To protect quantum fidelity from spontaneous Raman scattering noise, we use optimal O-band quantum channels, narrow spectro-temporal filtering, and multi-photon coincidence detection. Fidelity is shown to be well maintained with an elevated C-band launch power of 18.7 dBm for the single-channel 400-Gbps signal, which we project could support multiple classical channels totaling many terabits/s aggregate data rates. These results show the feasibility of advanced quantum and classical network applications operating within a unified fiber infrastructure.

We study the non-Markovian effect on a two-photon polarization entangled state in which one photon from the pair is stored in a fiber delay-line buffer. We propose a model of a photonic qubit coupled to fiber birefringence and a fiber reservoir representing the environment. We analytically derive a non-Markovian probability function for the buffered photon and its paired photon. To verify the probability function, we perform the full quantum state tomography of the photon pairs. The probability function fits well with the experimental data and the physical values. Our result indicates that our quantum system is operating slightly above the threshold for a non-Markovian transition. We observe a unique polarization dynamic of the buffered photon. We further exploit the measures of quantum mutual information for studying the quantumness of the photon pairs. We find that Werner's well-known separability criterion occurs at the buffer time of about 0.9$\,$ms. Our result implies that the quantum discord can surpass Werner's criterion, and hence the quantum bi-partite correlation can exist for a buffer time greater than 0.9$\,$ms., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures

When the strength of interaction between a quantum system and bath is non-negligible, the equilibrium state can deviate from the Gibbs state. Here, we obtain an approximate expression for such a mean force Gibbs state for a particle in an arbitrary one dimensional potential, interacting with a bosonic bath. This approximate state is accurate when either the system-bath coupling or the temperature is large, or when the third and higher derivatives of the potential are small compared to certain system-bath specific parameters. We show that our result recovers the ultra strong coupling and high temperature results recently derived in literature. We then apply this method to study some systems like a quartic oscillator and a particle in a quartic double-well potential. We also use our method to analyze the proton tunneling problem in a DNA recently studied in literature [Slocombe et al., Comm. Phys., vol. 5, no. 1, p. 109, 2022], where our results suggest the equilibrium value of the probability of mutation to be orders of magnitude lower than the steady state value obtained there ($10^{-8}$ vs $10^{-4}$)., Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures, comments are welcome

We report a fiber loop quantum buffer based on a low-loss 2$\times$2 switch and a unit delay made of a fiber delay line. We characterize the device by using a two-photon polarization entangled state in which one photon of the entangled photon pair is stored and retrieved at a repetition rate up to 78$\,\rm{kHz}$. The device, which enables integer multiples of a unit delay, can store the qubit state in a unit of fiber delay line up to 5.4$\,\rm{km}$ and the number of loop round-trips up to 3. Furthermore, we configure the device with other active elements to realize integer multiplies and divider of a unit delay of a qubit. The quantum state tomography is performed on the retrieved photon and its entangled photon. We obtain a state fidelity $>94\%$ with a maximum storage time of 52$\,\mu\rm{sec}$. To further characterize the storing and retrieving processes of the device, we perform entanglement-assisted quantum process tomography on the buffered qubit state. The process fidelity of the device is $>$ 0.98. Our result implies that the device preserves the superposition and entanglement of a qubit state from a two-photon polarization-entangled state. We introduce a new concept of Quantum Wrapper Networking, which enables control, management, and operation of quantum networks that can co-exist with classical networks while keeping the requirements for quantum networks intact. The quantum wrapper networks (QWNs) enable the transparent and interoperable transportation of quantum wrapper datagrams consisting of quantum payloads and, notably, classical headers to facilitate the datagram switching without measuring or disturbing the qubits of the quantum payload. Furthermore, QWNs can utilize the common network control and management for performance monitoring on the classical header and infer the quantum channel quality., Comment: This manuscript has 5 figures and 7 pages. The scalability of quantum networking will benefit from quantum and classical communications coexisting in shared fibers, the main challenge being spontaneous Raman scattering noise. We investigate the coexistence of multi-channel O-band quantum and C-band classical communications. We characterize multiple narrowband entangled photon pair channels across 1282 nm-1318 nm co-propagating over 48 km installed standard fiber with record C-band power (>18 dBm) and demonstrate that some quantum-classical wavelength combinations significantly outperform others. We tackle the problem of joint frequency and power allocation while emphasizing the generalization capability of a deep reinforcement learning model. Most of the existing methods solve reinforcement learning-based wireless problems for a specific pre-determined wireless network scenario. The performance of a trained agent tends to be very specific to the network and deteriorates when used in a different network operating scenario (e.g., different in size, neighborhood, and mobility, among others). We demonstrate our approach to enhance training to enable a higher generalization capability during inference of the deployed model in a distributed multi-agent setting in a hostile jamming environment. With all these, we show the improved training and inference performance of the proposed methods when tested on previously unseen simulated wireless networks of different sizes and architectures. More importantly, to prove practical impact, the end-to-end solution was implemented on the embedded software-defined radio and validated using over-the-air evaluation., Comment: Accepted to IEEE Communications Letters

Quantum information science and technology (QIST) is a critical and emerging technology with the potential for enormous world impact and is currently invested in by over 40 nations. To bring these large-scale investments to fruition and bridge the lower technology readiness levels (TRLs) of fundamental research at universities to the high TRLs necessary to realize the promise of practical quantum advantage accessible to industry and the public, we present a roadmap for Quantum Technology Demonstration Projects (QTDPs). Such QTDPs, focused on intermediate TRLs, are large-scale public-private partnerships with a high probability of translation from laboratory to practice. They create technology demonstrating a clear 'quantum advantage' for science breakthroughs that are user-motivated and will provide access to a broad and diverse community of scientific users. We demonstrate a three-node quantum network for C-band photon pairs using 2 pairs of 59 km of deployed fiber between Fermi and Argonne National Laboratories. The C-band pairs are directed to nodes using a standard telecommunication switch and synchronized to picosecond-scale timing resolution using a coexisting O- or L-band optical clock distribution system. We measure a reduction of coincidence-to-accidental ratio (CAR) of the C-band pairs from 51 $\pm$ 2 to 5.3 $\pm$ 0.4 due to Raman scattering of the O-band clock pulses. Despite this reduction, the CAR is nevertheless suitable for quantum networks.

The Illinois Express Quantum Network (IEQNET) is a program to realize metropolitan scale quantum networking over deployed optical fiber using currently available technology. IEQNET consists of multiple sites that are geographically dispersed in the Chicago metropolitan area. Each site has one or more quantum nodes (Q-nodes) representing the communication parties in a quantum network. Q-nodes generate or measure quantum signals such as entangled photons and communicate the measurement results via standard, classical signals and conventional networking processes. The entangled photons in IEQNET nodes are generated at multiple wavelengths, and are selectively distributed to the desired users via transparent optical switches. Here we describe the network architecture of IEQNET, including the Internet-inspired layered hierarchy that leverages software-defined networking (SDN) technology to perform traditional wavelength routing and assignment between the Q-nodes. Specifically, SDN decouples the control and data planes, with the control plane being entirely implemented in the classical domain. We also discuss the IEQNET processes that address issues associated with synchronization, calibration, network monitoring, and scheduling. An important goal of IEQNET is to demonstrate the extent to which the control plane classical signals can co-propagate with the data plane quantum signals in the same fiber lines (quantum-classical signal "coexistence"). This goal is furthered by the use of tunable narrow-band optical filtering at the receivers and, at least in some cases, a wide wavelength separation between the quantum and classical channels. We examine the problem of transmission control, i.e., when to transmit, in distributed wireless communications networks through the lens of multi-agent reinforcement learning. Most other works using reinforcement learning to control or schedule transmissions use some centralized control mechanism, whereas our approach is fully distributed. Each transmitter node is an independent reinforcement learning agent and does not have direct knowledge of the actions taken by other agents. We consider the case where only a subset of agents can successfully transmit at a time, so each agent must learn to act cooperatively with other agents. An agent may decide to transmit a certain number of steps into the future, but this decision is not communicated to the other agents, so it the task of the individual agents to attempt to transmit at appropriate times. We achieve this collaborative behavior through studying the effects of different actions spaces. We are agnostic to the physical layer, which makes our approach applicable to many types of networks. Quantum information science harnesses the principles of quantum mechanics to realize computational algorithms with complexities vastly intractable by current computer platforms. Typical applications range from quantum chemistry to optimization problems and also include simulations for high energy physics. The recent maturing of quantum hardware has triggered preliminary explorations by several institutions (including Fermilab) of quantum hardware capable of demonstrating quantum advantage in multiple domains, from quantum computing to communications, to sensing. The Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems (SQMS) Center, led by Fermilab, is dedicated to providing breakthroughs in quantum computing and sensing, mediating quantum engineering and HEP based material science. The main goal of the Center is to deploy quantum systems with superior performance tailored to the algorithms used in high energy physics. In this Snowmass paper, we discuss the two most promising superconducting quantum architectures for HEP algorithms, i.e. three-level systems (qutrits) supported by transmon devices coupled to planar devices and multi-level systems (qudits with arbitrary N energy levels) supported by superconducting 3D cavities. For each architecture, we demonstrate exemplary HEP algorithms and identify the current challenges, ongoing work and future opportunities. Furthermore, we discuss the prospects and complexities of interconnecting the different architectures and individual computational nodes. Finally, we review several different strategies of error protection and correction and discuss their potential to improve the performance of the two architectures.
