We conducted a comprehensive analysis of the magnetic and electronic transport properties of the layered chalcogenide Cr$_{1+\delta}$Te$_2$ in its single crystalline form. This material exhibits a ferromagnetic transition at a critical temperature of $T_C = 191$ K, characterized by significant thermal hysteresis in the magnetization data below this temperature. Measurements of isothermal magnetization, magnetocaloric effect, and magnetoresistance indicate that the system exhibits strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy, with the $c$-axis serving as the easy axis of magnetization. The Cr$_{1+\delta}$Te$_2$ compound shows pronounced anomalous Hall effect (AHE); however, existing experimental and theoretical data do not provide a clear understanding of the nature and origin of this phenomenon. Our experimental findings suggest that the skew scattering mechanism primarily accounts for the observed AHE. In contrast, our theoretical study reveals the presence of gapped nodal points accompanied by non-zero Berry Curvature, which are expected to contribute towards intrinsic AHE. A detailed analysis of the electronic band structure, obtained through density functional theory calculations, reveals that the Berry Curvature at different nodal points exhibit both positive and negative signs. These opposing contributions largely cancel each other out, thereby significantly diminishing the intrinsic contribution to the AHE., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

We theoretically investigate the resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra in a quasi-1D chain of weakly coupled frustrated spin-1/2 trimers, as realized in Na$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$Ge$_{4}$O$_{12}$, with Cu $d^{9}$ 1/2 spins. We compute multi-spin correlations contributing to spin-conserving (SC) and spin non-conserving (NSC) RIXS cross-sections using ultra-short core-hole lifetime expansion within the Kramer-Heisenberg formalism. These excitations involve flipping spins of up to three spin-1/2 trimers and include the inelastic neutron scattering (INS) single spin-flip excitations in the lowest order of the NSC channel. We identify the fractionalization of two coupled frustrated trimers in terms of spinons, doublons, and quartons in the spectra evaluated using exact diagonalization, complementing prior studies single spin-spin flip excitation in inelastic neutron scattering. Specifically, we uncover two new high-energy modes at $\omega \approx 2.4J_1$ and $3.0 J_1$ in the NSC and SC channels that are accessible at the Cu $K$-edge and $L$-edge RIXS spectra, which were missing in the INS study. This, therefore, provides pathways to uncover all the possible excitations in coupled trimers. Our work opens new opportunities for understanding the nature of fractionalization and RIXS spectra of frustrated, low-dimensional spin chains.

We investigate the quantum phases of a frustrated antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-1/2 model Hamiltonian on a Kagome-strip chain (KSC), a one-dimensional analogue of the Kagome lattice, and construct its phase diagram in an extended exchange parameter space. The isolated unit cell of this lattice comprises of five spin-1/2 particles, giving rise to several types of magnetic ground states in a unit cell: a spin-$3/2$ state as well as spin-$1/2$ states with and without additional degeneracies. We explore the ground state properties of the fully connected thermodynamic system using exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods, identifying several distinct quantum phases. All but one of the phases exhibit gapless spin excitations. The exception is a dimerized spin-gapped phase that covers a large part of the phase diagram and includes the uniformly exchange coupled system. We argue that this phase can be understood by perturbing around the limit of decoupled unit cells where each unit cell has six degenerate ground states. We use degenerate perturbation theory to obtain an effective Hamiltonian, a Kugel-Khomskii model with an anisotropic spin-one orbital degree of freedom, which helps explain the origin of dimerization.

Understanding the interplay of strong correlation and temperature in nodal-line semimetals can offer novel ways to control spin currents. Here we consider the 3d-5d double-perovskite Ba$_{2}$CoWO$_{6}$, which features mirror-symmetry-protected nodal-lines, strong Co-site interactions, and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) at W sites. Our first principles and exact diagonalization results reveal a half-metallic ground state with high-spin Co and topologically non-trivial bands. We demonstrate that SOC gaps out nodal points, causes band-inversion and generates anomalous Hall response. A semi-classical Monte Carlo finite-temperature simulation of five-orbital Hubbard model uncovers an emergent Co-spin scalar chirality and colossal positive transverse-magnetoresponse. We predict the temperature and magnetic field scales for the tunability of scalar-chirality and magnetoresponse.

We explore the intriguing topological itinerant magnet MgMn$_6$Sn$_6$, characterized by bilayer kagome Mn layers encasing a hexagonal Sn layer. Using \textit{ab initio} Density functional theory and Dynamical mean-field theory calculations, we uncover the complex electronic properties and many-body configuration of its magnetic ground state. Mn d-orbital electrons form a frustrated many-body ground state with significant quantum fluctuations, resulting in competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic spin exchanges. Our band dispersion calculations reveal a mirror symmetry-protected nodal line in the \textit{k}$_z$ = 0 plane. When spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is introduced, the gap is formed along the nodal line lifted due to broken time-reversal symmetry with magnetic ordering, leading to substantial intrinsic Berry curvature. We identify Dirac fermions, van Hove singularities, and flat band near the Fermi energy (\textit{E}$_F$), with SOC introducing a finite gap at key points. The unique proximity of the flat band to \textit{E}$_F$ suggests potential instabilities. Spin-orbit coupling opens a 20 meV gap at the quadratic touching point between the Dirac and flat band, bestowing a nonzero Z$_2$ invariant. This leads to a significant spin Hall conductivity. Despite the presence of large incoherent scattering due to electronic interactions, band crossings and flat band features persist at finite temperatures. MgMn$_6$Sn$_6$ exhibits intriguing topological and magnetic properties, with promising applications in spintronics.

The intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) in a ferromagnetic metal is completely determined by its band structure. Since the spin orientation direction is an important band-structure tuning parameter, it is highly desirable to study the anomalous Hall effect in a system with multiple spin reorientation transitions. We study a layered tetragonal room temperature ferromagnet SmMn2Ge2, which gives us the opportunity to measure magnetotransport properties where the long c-axis and the short a-axis can both be magnetically easy axes depending on the temperature range we choose. We show a moderately large fully intrinsic AHC up to room temperature when the crystal is magnetized along the c-axis. Interestingly, the AHC can be tuned to completely extrinsic with extremely large values when the crystal is magnetized along the a-axis, regardless of whether the a-axis is magnetically easy or hard axis. First-principles calculations show that nodal line states originate from Mn-d orbitals just below the Fermi energy (EF) in the electronic band structure when the spins are oriented along the c-axis. Intrinsic AHC originates from the Berry curvature effect of the gapped nodal lines in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. AHC almost disappears when the spins are aligned along the a-axis because the nodal line states shift above EF and become unoccupied. Since the AHC can be tuned from fully extrinsic to intrinsic even at 300 K, SmMn2Ge2 becomes a potential candidate for room-temperature spintronics applications., Comment: 9 main figures, 4 SI figures

Employing first-principles modelling and many-body methods, the magnetic properties of spin-1/2 chain compound NaVOPO$_4$ are explored. The extensive first-principles calculations establish an intricate three-dimensionally coupled model that consists of weakly alternating $J$-$J^{\prime}$ antiferromagnetic chains running along cris-cross directions between two consecutive $ab$ planes, connected via two subleading couplings, a ferromagnetic exchange along the $c$ direction ($J_c$) and a weaker antiferromagnetic exchange ($J_a$) along the body diagonal direction. The exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalized group study has been carried out on a two-dimensional spin model with $J$-$J^{\prime}$-$J_c$ and effective $J_d$ couplings, constructed based on the full model, for numerical ease. The $J_c$-$J_d$ phase diagram is found to host a {\it disorder} phase with a finite spin gap for comparable values of $J_c$ and $J_d$, arising out of the competing nature of these two interactions, other than two ordered phases. The calculated thermodynamic properties of this model provide a fair description of experimentally measured data. The predominant manifestation of $J_c$ and $J_d$ in the disorder phase happens in the stabilisation of a multi-magnon condensed phase, upon gap closing by application of an external magnetic field. We further explore the effect of tensile uniaxial strain, which is found to drive the system from gapful to gapless ground state.

The frustrated ladder with alternate ferromagnetic(F) exchange $-J_F$ and AF exchange $J_A$ to first neighbors and F exchange $-J_L$ to second neighbors is studied by exact diagonalization (ED) and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations in systems of $2N$ spins-1/2 with periodic boundary conditions. The ground state is a singlet $(S = 0)$ and the singlet-triplet gap $\varepsilon_T$ is finite for the exchanges considered. Spin-1/2 string correlation functions $g_1(N)$ and $g_2(N)$ are defined for an even number $N$ of consecutive spins in systems with two spins per unit cell; the ladder has string order $g_2(\infty)> 0$ and $g_1(\infty) = 0$. The minimum $N^*$ of $g_2(N)$ is related to the range of ground-state spin correlations. Convergence to $g_2(\infty)$ is from below, and $g_1(N)$ decreases exponentially for $N \geq N^*$. Singlet valence bond (VB) diagrams account for the size dependencies. The frustrated ladder at special values of $J_F$, $J_L$ and $J_A$ reduces to well-known models such as the spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnet and the $J_1-J_2$ model, among others. Numerical analysis of ladders matches previous results for spin-1 gaps or string correlation functions and extends them to spin-1/2 systems. The nondegenerate singlet ground state of ladder is a bond-order wave, a Kekul\'e VB diagrams at $J_L = J_F/2 \leq J_A$, that is reversed on interchanging $-J_F$ and $J_A$. Inversion symmetry is spontaneously broken in the dimer phase of the $J_1-J_2$ model where the Kekul\'e diagrams are the doubly degenerate ground states at $J_2/J_1 = 1/2$., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures

Motivated by the largely unexplored domain of multi-polar ordered spin states in the Kitaev-Heisenberg (KH) systems we investigate the ground state dynamics of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ KH model, focusing on quadrupolar (QP) order in 2-leg ladder and two-dimensional honeycomb lattice geometries. Employing exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group methods, we analyze the QP order parameter and correlation functions. Our findings reveal a robust QP order across a wide range of the phase diagram, influenced by the interplay between Heisenberg and Kitaev interactions. Notably, we observe an enhancement of QP order near Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) phases, despite the absence of long-range spin-spin correlations. This highlights a complex relationship between QP order and QSLs, offering new insights into quantum magnetism in low-dimensional systems. Our findings provide a rational explanation for the observed nonlinear magnetic susceptibility in $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$.

Two legged skewed spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ ladders are frustrated and exhibit exotic quantum phases in ground state due to strong quantum fluctuations and competing spin exchanges. Here, we study ground state properties of a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg model on 3/4, 3/5 and 5/5 skewed ladders in the presence of a Zeeman magnetic field, $B$, using exact diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group method. We note the existence of plateaus at $m =$ 1/3 and 2/3 for 3/4 skewed ladder, at $m =$ 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 for 3/5 skewed ladder, and at $m =$ 0, 1/3, and 2/3 for 5/5 skewed ladder, where $m$ is the ratio of the observed magnetization ($M$) to the saturated magnetization (${M_\mathrm{max}}$). The plateau state is always a gapped state and the plateau width depends on the gap in the system. Surprisingly, the 3/4 and 5/5 skewed ladders show interesting quadrupolar or n-type spin nematic phases below the 1/3$^{rd}$ plateau, i.e, at very low magnetic fields. These two systems are unique as they host both a plateau and a quadrupolar phase at low magnetic fields. The linear variation of pitch angle of the spin with magnetization and behavior of binding energy of magnon pairs as function of magnetic field are also calculated in both the systems. We also study the contribution of the binding energy to two magnon condensate.

In this brief review, we introduce a new spin ladder system called skewed spin ladders and discuss the exotic quantum phases of this system. The spin ladders studied are the 5/7, 3/4 and 3/5 systems corresponding to alternately fused 5 and 7 membered rings; 3 and 4 membered rings; and 3 and 5 membered rings. These ladders show completely different behaviour as the Hamiltonian model parameter is changed. When the Hamiltonian parameter is increased the 5/7 ladder switches from an initial singlet ground state to progressively higher spin ground state and then to a reentrant singlet state before finally settling to the highest spin ground state whose spin equals the number of unit cells in the system. The 3/4 ladder goes from a singlet ground state to a high spin ground state with each unit cell contributing spin 1 to the state, as the model parameter is increased. The 3/5 ladder shows a singlet ground state for small parameters and high spin ground state for intermediate values of the parameter and for still higher parameters, a reentrant singlet ground state. They can also show interesting magnetization plateaus as illustrated by studies on a specific spin ladder.

We have successfully synthesized single crystals, solved the crystal structure, and studied the magnetic properties of a new family of copper halides (C$_4$H$_{14}$N$_2$)Cu$_2X_6$ ($X$= Cl, Br). These compounds crystallize in an orthorhombic crystal structure with space group $Pnma$. The crystal structure features Cu$^{2+}$ dimers arranged parallel to each other that makes a zig-zag two-leg ladder-like structure. Further, there exists a diagonal interaction between two adjacent dimers which generates inter-dimer frustration. Both the compounds manifest a singlet ground state with a large gap in the excitation spectrum. Magnetic susceptibility is analyzed in terms of both interacting spin-$1/2$ dimer and two-leg ladder models followed by exact diagonalization calculations. Our theoretical calculations in conjunction with the experimental magnetic susceptibility establish that the spin-lattice can be described well by a frustrated two-leg ladder model with strong rung coupling ($J_0/k_{\rm B} \simeq 116$ K and 300 K), weak leg coupling ($J^{\prime\prime}/k_{\rm B} \simeq 18.6$ K and 105 K), and equally weak diagonal coupling ($J^{\prime }/k_{\rm B} \simeq 23.2$ K and 90 K) for Cl and Br compounds, respectively. These exchange couplings set the critical fields very high, making them experimentally inaccessible. The correlation function decays exponentially as expected for a gapped spin system. The structural aspects of both the compounds are correlated with their magnetic properties. The calculation of entanglement witness divulges strong entanglement in both the compounds which persists upto high temperatures, even beyond 370~K for the Br compound., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables

The magnetization $M(h)$ is used to identify three singlet quantum phases of the ladder with isotropic exchange interactions. The Dimer phase with frustrated F exchanges in rungs and legs has a first-order $M(h)$ transition at $0$ K from singlet to ferromagnetic at the saturation field $h_s$. The Haldane-DAF phase with strong F exchange in rungs and net AF exchange between rungs has continuous $M(h)$ and is adiabatically connected to the $S = 1$ Heisenberg AF chain. The AF phase with strong F exchange in legs and net AF exchange between legs has continuous $M(h)$ and is adiabatically connected to the spin-1/2 $J_1-J_2$ model with $J_1 > 0$ and $J_2 < 0$. We study a frustrated two-leg spin-1/2 ladder with alternate Ising and isotropic Heisenberg rung exchange interactions, whereas, interactions along legs and diagonals are Ising type. The ground-state (GS) of this model has four exotic phases: (i) the stripe rung ferromagnet (SRFM), (ii) the anisotropic anti-ferromagnet (AAFM), (iii) the Dimer, and (iv) the stripe leg ferromagnet (SLFM) in absence of any external magnetic field. In this work, we study the effect of externally applied longitudinal and transverse fields on GS phases and note that there are two plateaus with per-site magnetization $1/4$ and $1/2$. There is another plateau at zero magnetization due to a finite spin gap in the presence of a longitudinal field. The exact diagonalization (ED) and the transfer matrix (TM) methods are used to solve the model Hamiltonian and the mechanism of plateau formation is analyzed using spin density, quantum fidelity, and quantum concurrence. In the (i) SRFM phase, Ising exchanges are dominant for all spins but the Heisenberg rungs are weak, and therefore, the magnetization shows a continuous transition as a function of the transverse field. In the other three phases [(ii)-(iv)], the Ising dimer rungs are weak and those are broken first to reach a plateau with per-site magnetization $1/4$, having a large gap which is closed by further application of the transverse field., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

In this paper, we report the theoretical investigation and experimental realization of a new spin-gapless semiconductor (SGSs) compound CoFeMnSn belonging to the family of quaternary Heusler alloys. Through the use of several ground-state energy calculations, the most stable structure has been identified. Calculations of the spin-polarized band structure in optimized structure's reveals the SGS nature of the compound. The compound form in an ordered crystal structure and exhibit a high ferromagnetic transition temperature (T$_{\rm C}$ = 560 K), making the material excellent for room temperature applications. Adherence of saturation magnetization to the Slater-Pauling rule, together with the nearly temperature-independent resistivity, conductivity, and carrier concentration of the compound in the temperature regime 5$-$300 K along with the low value of anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) further confirms the SGS nature. Theoretical calculations also reveal the robustness of the SGS state due to lattice contraction and one can obtain a high value of intrinsic AHC using hole doping. Combined SGS and topological properties of the compound make CoFeMnSn suitable for spintronics and magneto-electronics devices.

Recent theoretical and experimental work suggest that the honeycomb cobaltates, initially proposed as candidate Kitaev quantum magnets, are in fact described by a pseudospin-$1/2$ easy-plane spin Hamiltonian with nearest neighbor ferromagnetic (FM) exchange $J_1$ being frustrated by antiferromagnetic third-neighbor exchange $J_3$ and weaker compass anisotropies. Using exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations, we show that this model exhibits FM order at small $J_3/J_1$ and zig-zag (ZZ) order at large $J_3/J_1$, separated by an intermediate phase, which we label as $\widetilde{\mathrm{SL}}$. This $\widetilde{\mathrm{SL}}$ phase is shown to exhibit spin-liquid-like correlations in DMRG, although we cannot preclude weak broken symmetries, e.g. weak Ising type N\'eel order, given the limits on our explored system sizes. Using a modified parton mean field theory and variational Monte Carlo on Gutzwiller projected wavefunctions, we show that the optimal FM and ZZ orders as well as the intermediate $\widetilde{\mathrm{SL}}$ state are proximate to a `parent' Dirac spin liquid (SL). This Dirac SL is shown to capture the broad continuum in the temperature and magnetic field dependent terahertz spectroscopy of BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$, and the reported low temperature metallic thermal conductivity in Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ and BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$ upon incorporating disorder induced broadening., Comment: Final PRB version - 13 pages, 11 figures. The anomalous transport properties of Heusler compounds become a hotspot of research in recent years due to their unique band structure and possible application in spintronics. In this paper, we report the anomalous Hall effect in polycrystalline NiCoMnGa quaternary Heusler compound by experimental means and theoretical calculations. The experimental anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) was found at about 256 S/cm at 10K with an intrinsic contribution of ~ 121 S/cm. The analysis of Hall data reveals the presence of both extrinsic and intrinsic contributions in AHE. Our theoretical calculations show that a pair of spin-orbit coupled band formed by the band splitting due to spin-orbit interaction (SOI) at the Fermi level produces a finite Berry flux in the system that provides the intrinsic AHC about 100 S/cm, which is in good agreement with the experiment.

Ferromagnetic (FM) semimetals Fe$_n$GeTe$_2$(n=3, 4, 5), exhibit several symmetry-protected band-crossing points or lines near the Fermi energy (E$_F$) and these topological properties of energy bands lead to interesting transport properties. We study these materials employing the first-principle calculations and the tight-binding Hamiltonian constructed by fitting the parameters of the first principles calculation. In the presence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for n=3,5 a large Berry curvature (BC) concentrated on the nodal lines is observed. The consequence of the correlation of the topological nodal line and magnetic moments on anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) $\sigma_{xy}$ and anomalous Nernst conductivity (ANC) $\alpha_{xy}$ have been investigated. We find $\sigma_{xy}=150$ S/cm for n=3, 295 S/cm for n=4, and 90 S/cm for n=5 at 0 K, while the ANC is observed as $\alpha_{xy}=0.55$ A/Km for n=3, 0.10 A/Km for n=5, and 0.80 A/Km for n=4, at the E$_F$ at room temperature. Our calculated AHC values at 0 K, i.e., 150 S/cm for Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ and 90 S/cm Fe$_5$GeTe$_2$, are consistent with the experimentally reported values. Also the experimentally reported value of ANC for Fe$_5$GeTe$_2$ is close to our calculated value at room temperature, i.e., 0.10 A/Km., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

The spin$-1/2$ chain with ferromagnetic exchange $J_1 < 0$ between first neighbors and antiferromagnetic $J_2 > 0$ between second neighbors supports two spin-Peierls (SP) instabilities depending on the frustration $\alpha = J_2/\vert J_1\vert$. Instead of chain dimerization with two spins per unit cell, $J_1-J_2$ models with $\alpha > 0.65$ and linear spin-phonon coupling are unconditionally unstable to sublattice dimerization with four spins per unit cell. Unequal $J_1$ to neighbors to the right and left extends the model to gapped ($\gamma > 0$) chains with conditional SP transitions at $T_{SP}$ to dimerized sublattices and a weaker specific heat $C(T)$ anomaly. The spin susceptibility $\chi(T)$ and $C(T)$ are obtained in the thermodynamic limit by a combination of exact diagonalization of small systems with $\alpha > 0.65$ and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations of systems up to $N \sim 100$ spins. Both $J_1-J_2$ and $\gamma > 0$ models account quantitatively for $\chi(T)$ and $C(T)$ in the paramagnetic phase of $\beta$-TeVO$_{4}$ for $T > 8$ K, but lower $T$ indicates a gapped chain instead of a $J_1-J_2$ model as previously thought. The same parameters and $T_{SP} = 4.6$ K generate a $C(T)/T$ anomaly that reproduces the anomaly at the $4.6$ K transition of $\beta$-TeVO$_{4}$, but not the weak $\chi(T)$ signature., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures

Entanglement entropy (EE) of a state is a measure of correlation or entanglement between two parts of a composite system and it may show appreciable change when the ground state (GS) undergoes a qualitative change in a quantum phase transition (QPT). Therefore, the EE has been extensively used to characterise the QPT in various correlated Hamiltonians. Similarly fidelity also shows sharp changes at a QPT. We characterized the QPT of frustrated antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-1/2 systems on 3/4, 3/5 and 5/7 skewed ladders using the EE and fidelity analysis. It is noted that all the non-magnetic to magnetic QPT boundary in these systems can be accurately determined using the EE and fidelity, and the EE exhibits a discontinuous change, whereas fidelity shows a sharp dip at the transition points. It is also noted that in case of the degenerate GS, the unsymmetrized calculations show wild fluctuations in the EE and fidelity even without actual phase transition, however, this problem is resolved by calculating the EE and the fidelity in the lowest energy state of the symmetry subspaces, to which the degenerate states belong., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures

The Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition in magnetic system is an intriguing phenomena and an accurate estimation of the BKT transition temperature has been a long-standing problem. In this work we explore the anisotropic classical Heisenberg XY and XXZ models with ferromagnetic exchange on a square lattice and antiferromagnetic exchange on a triangular lattice using an unsupervised machine learning approach called principal component analysis (PCA). In earlier studies of the BKT transition, spin configurations and vorticities calculated from Monte Carlo method are used to determine the transition temperature $T_{BKT}$, but those methods fail to give any conclusive results by analyzing the principal components in the PCA approach. In this work vorticities are used as initial input to the PCA and curve of the first principal component with temperature is fitted with a function to determine an accurate value of $T_{BKT}$. This procedure works well for anisotropic classical Heisenberg with ferromagnetic exchange on square lattice as well as for frustrated antiferromagnetic exchange on a triangular lattice. The classical anisotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnetic model on the triangular lattice has two close transitions; the BKT at $T_{BKT}$ and Ising like phase transition for chirality at $T_c$ and it is difficult to separate these transition points. Frustration driven quantum fluctuation leads to many exotic phases in the ground state and study of these quantum phase transitions is one of the most challenging areas of research in condensed matter physics. Here, a frustrated Heisenberg $J_1-J_2$ model of spin-1/2 chain with nearest exchange interaction $J_1$ and next nearest exchange interaction $J_2$ is studied using the principal component analysis (PCA) which is an unsupervised machine learning technique. In this method most probable spin configurations (MPSC) of ground-state (GS) and first excited state (FES) for different $J_2/J_1$ are used as the input in PCA to construct the co-variance matrix. The `quantified principal component' of the largest eigenvalue of co-variance matrix $p_1(J_2/J_1)$ is calculated and it is shown that the nature and variation of $p_1(J_2/J_1)$ can accurately predict the phase transitions and degeneracies in the GS. The $p_1(J_2/J_1)$ calculated from the MPSC of GS can only exhibit the signature of degeneracies in the GS, whereas, $p_1(J_2/J_1)$ calculated from MPSC of FES captures the gapless spin liquid (GSL)-dimer phase transition as well as all the degeneracies of the model system. We show that jump in $p_1(J_2/J_1)$ of FES at $J_2/J_1 \approx 0.241$, indicates the GSL-dimer phase transition, whereas its kinks give the signature of the GS degeneracies. The ground state (gs) of antiferromagnetically coupled dimers on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL) stabilizes many exotic phases and has been extensively studied. The gs properties of ferromagnetically coupled dimers on SSL are equally important but unexplored. In this model the exchange coupling along the $x$-axis ($J_x$) and $y$-axis ($J_y$) are ferromagnetic and the diagonal exchange coupling ($J$) is antiferromagnetic. In this work we explore the quantum phase diagram of ferromagnetically coupled dimer model numerically using density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. We note that in $J_x$-$J_y$ parameter space this model exhibits six interesting phases:(I) stripe $(0,\pi)$, (II) stripe $(\pi,0)$, (III) perfect dimer, (IV) $X$-spiral, (V) $Y$-spiral and (VI) ferromagnetic phase. Phase boundaries of these quantum phases are determined using the correlation functions and gs energies. We also notice the correlation length in this system is less than four lattice units in most of the parameter regimes. Full Heusler compounds with Cobalt as a primary element show anomalous transport properties owing to the Weyl fermions and broken time-reversal symmetry. We present here the study of anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in Co2FeGe Heusler compound. The experiment reveals anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) 100 S/cm at room temperature with an intrinsic contribution of 78 S/cm . The analysis of anomalous Hall resistivity suggests the scattering independent intrinsic mechanism dominates the overall behaviour of anomalous Hall resistivity. The first principles calculation reveals that the Berry curvature originated by gapped nodal line near EF is the main source of AHE in Co2FeGe Heusler compound. The theoretically calculated AHC is in agreement with the experiment.

We examine the existence and characteristics of the exotic Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase in a one-dimensional Fermi gas with attractive Hubbard interactions, in the presence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and Zeeman field. We show that a robust FFLO phase can be created in the presence of attractive on-site interactions and Zeeman field, and that the addition of SOC suppresses the FFLO order and enhances the pair formation. In absence of SOC, the system shows four phases: Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS), FFLO, multi- mode pairing and fully polarized phases by tuning the Zeeman field h, and the quantum transition between these phases is discontinuous with respect to h. In the presence of SOC, the transition from the BCS to FFLO phase becomes continuous. We present a complete phase diagram of this model both in the presence and in the absence of SOC at quarter electron filling and also explore the effect of SOC on the FFLO phase., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

The antiferromagnetic $J_1-J_2$ model is a spin-1/2 chain with isotropic exchange $J_1 > 0$ between first neighbors and $J_2 = \alpha J_1$ between second neighbors. The model supports both gapless quantum phases with nondegenerate ground states and gapped phases with $\Delta(\alpha) > 0$ and doubly degenerate ground states. Exact thermodynamics is limited to $\alpha = 0$, the linear Heisenberg antiferromagnet (HAF). Exact diagonalization of small systems at frustration $\alpha$ followed by density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations returns the entropy density $S(T,\alpha,N)$ and magnetic susceptibility $\chi(T,\alpha,N)$ of progressively larger systems up to $N = 96$ or 152 spins. Convergence to the thermodynamics limit, $S(T,\alpha)$ or $\chi(T,\alpha)$, is demonstrated down to $T/J \sim 0.01$ in the sectors $\alpha < 1$ and $\alpha > 1$. $S(T,\alpha)$ yields the critical points between gapless phases with $S^\prime(0,\alpha) > 0$ and gapped phases with $S^\prime(0,\alpha) = 0$. The $S^\prime(T,\alpha)$ maximum at $T^*(\alpha)$ is obtained directly in chains with large $\Delta(\alpha)$ and by extrapolation for small gaps. A phenomenological approximation for $S(T,\alpha)$ down to $T = 0$ indicates power-law deviations $T^{-\gamma(\alpha)}$ from $\exp(-\Delta(\alpha)/T)$ with exponent $\gamma(\alpha)$ that increases with $\alpha$. The $\chi(T,\alpha)$ analysis also yields power-law deviations, but with exponent $\eta(\alpha)$ that decreases with $\alpha$. $S(T,\alpha)$ and the spin density $\rho(T,\alpha) = 4T\chi(T,\alpha)$ probe the thermal and magnetic fluctuations, respectively, of strongly correlated spin states. Gapless chains have constant $S(T,\alpha)/\rho(T,\alpha)$ for $T < 0.10$. We study the quantum phase transitions of frustrated antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-1 systems on the 3/4 and 3/5 skewed two leg ladder geometries. These systems can be viewed as arising by periodically removing rung bonds from a zigzag ladder. We find that in large systems, the ground state (gs) of the 3/4 ladder switches from a singlet to a magnetic state for $J_1 \ge 1.82$; the gs spin corresponds to ferromagnetic alignment of effective $S = 2$ objects on each unit cell. The gs of antiferromagnetic exchange Heisenberg spin-1 system on a 3/5 skewed ladder is highly frustrated and has spiral spin arrangements. The amplitude of the spin density wave in the 3/5 ladder is significantly larger compared to that in the magnetic state of the 3/4 ladder. The gs of the system switches between singlet state and low spin magnetic states multiple times on tuning $J_1$ in a finite size system. The switching pattern is nonmonotonic as a function of $J_1$, and depends on the system size. It appears to be the consequence of higher $J_1$ favoring higher spin magnetic state and the finite system favoring a standing spin wave. For some specific parameter values, the magnetic gs in the 3/5 system is doubly degenerate in two different mirror symmetry subspaces. This degeneracy leads to spontaneous spin parity and mirror symmetry breaking giving rise to spin current in the gs of the system., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

The low temperature thermodynamics of correlated 1D fermionic models with spin and charge degrees of freedom is obtained by exact diagonalization (ED) of small systems and followed by density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations that target the lowest hundreds of states $\{E(N)\}$ at system size $N$ instead of the ground state. Progressively larger $N$ reaches $T < 0.05t$ in correlated models with electron transfer $t$ between first neighbors and bandwidth $4t$. The size dependence of the many-fermion basis is explicitly included for arbitrary interactions by scaling the partition function. The remaining size dependence is then entirely due to the energy spectrum $\{E(N)\}$ of the model. The ED/DMRG method is applied to Hubbard and extended Hubbard models, both gapped and gapless, with $N_e = N$ or $N/2$ electrons and is validated against exact results for the magnetic susceptibility $\chi(T)$ and entropy $S(T)$ per site. Some limitations of the method are noted. The quantum phases in a spin-1 skewed ladder system formed by alternately fusing five- and seven-membered rings are studied numerically using the exact diagonalization technique up to 16 spins and using the density matrix renormalization group method for larger system sizes. The ladder has a fixed isotropic antiferromagnetic (AF) exchange interaction ($J_2 = 1$) between the nearest-neighbor spins along the legs and a varying isotropic AF exchange interaction ($J_1$) along the rungs. As a function of $J_1$, the system shows many interesting ground states (gs) which vary from different types of nonmagnetic and ferrimagnetic gs. The study of diverse gs properties such as spin gap, spin-spin correlations, spin density and bond order reveal that the system has four distinct phases, namely, the AF phase at small $J_1$; the ferrimagnetic phase with gs spin $S_G = n$ for $1.44 < J_1 < 4.74$ and with $S_G = 2n$ for $J_1 > 5.63$, where $n$ is the number of unit cells; and a reentrant nonmagnetic phase at $4.74 < J_1 < 5.44$. We study a frustrated two-leg spin ladder with alternate isotropic Heisenberg and Ising rung exchange interactions, whereas, interactions along legs and diagonals are Ising-type. All the interactions in the ladder are anti-ferromagnetic in nature and induce frustration in the system. This model shows four interesting quantum phases: (i) stripe rung ferromagnetic (SRFM), (ii) stripe rung ferromagnetic with edge singlet (SRFM-E), (iii) anisotropic antiferromagnetic (AAFM), and (iv) stripe leg ferromagnetic (SLFM) phase. We construct a quantum phase diagram for this model and show that in stripe rung ferromagnet (SRFM), the same type of sublattice spins (either $S$ or $\sigma$-type spins) are aligned in the same direction. Whereas, in anisotropic antiferromagnetic phase, both $S$ and $\sigma$-type of spins are anti-ferromagnetically aligned with each other, two nearest $S$ spins along the rung form an anisotropic singlet bond whereas two nearest $\sigma$ spins form an Ising bond. In large Heisenberg rung exchange interaction limit, spins on each leg are ferromagnetically aligned, but spins on different legs are anti-ferromagnetically aligned. The thermodynamic quantities like $Cv(T)$, $\chi(T)$ and $S(T)$ are also calculated using the transfer matrix method for different phase. Bi$_2$Se$_3$, a layered three dimensional (3D) material, exhibits topological insulating properties due to presence of surface states and a band gap of 0.3 eV in the bulk. We study the effect hydrostatic pressure $P$ and doping with rare earth elements on the topological aspect of this material in bulk from a first principles perspective. Our study shows that under a moderate pressure of P$>$7.9 GPa, the bulk electronic properties show a transition from an insulating to a Weyl semi-metal state due to band inversion. This electronic topological transition may be correlated to a structural change from a layered van der Waals material to a 3D system observed at $P$=7.9 GPa. At large $P$ density of states have significant value at the Fermi-energy. Intercalating Gd with a small doping fraction between Bi$_2$Se$_3$ layers drives the system to a metallic anti-ferromagnetic state, with Weyl nodes below the Fermi-energy. At the Weyl nodes time reversal symmetry is broken due to finite local field induced by large magnetic moments on Gd atoms. However, substituting Bi with Gd induces anti-ferromagnetic order with an increased direct band gap. Our study provides novel approaches to tune topological transitions, particularly in capturing the elusive Weyl semimetal states, in 3D topological materials.

The spin-$1/2$ chain with antiferromagnetic exchange $J_1$ and $J_2 = \alpha J_1$ between first and second neighbors, respectively, has both gapless and gapped ($\Delta(\alpha) > 0$) quantum phases at frustration $0 \le \alpha \le 3/4$. The ground state instability of regular ($\delta = 0$) chains to dimerization ($\delta > 0$) drives a spin-Peierls transition at $T_{SP}(\alpha)$ that varies with $\alpha$ in these strongly correlated systems. The thermodynamic limit of correlated states is obtained by exact treatment of short chains followed by density matrix renormalization calculations of progressively longer chains. The doubly degenerate ground states of the gapped regular phase are bond order waves (BOWs) with long-range bond-bond correlations and electronic dimerization $\delta_e(\alpha)$. The $T$ dependence of $\delta_e(T,\alpha)$ is found using four-spin correlation functions and contrasted to structural dimerization $\delta(T,\alpha)$ at $T \le T_{SP}(\alpha)$. The relation between $T_{SP}(\alpha)$ and the $T = 0$ gap $\Delta(\delta(0),\alpha)$ varies with frustration in both gapless and gapped phases. The magnetic susceptibility $\chi(T,\alpha)$ at $T > T_{SP}$ can be used to identify physical realizations of spin-Peierls systems. Magnetization plateaus are some of the most striking manifestations of frustration in low-dimensional spin systems. We present numerical studies of magnetization plateaus in the fascinating spin-1/2 skewed ladder system obtained by alternately fusing five- and seven-membered rings. This system exhibits three significant plateaus at $m = 1/4$, $1/2$ and $3/4$, consistent with the Oshikawa-Yamanaka-Affleck condition. Our numerical as well as perturbative analysis shows that the ground state can be approximated by three weakly coupled singlet dimers and two free spins, in the absence of a magnetic field. With increasing applied magnetic field, the dimers progressively become triplets with large energy gaps to excited states, giving rise to stable magnetization plateaus. Finite-temperature studies show that $m=1/4$ and $1/2$ plateaus are robust and survive thermal fluctuations while the $m=3/4$ plateau shrinks rapidly due to thermal noise. A collection of self-propelled particles (SPPs) shows coherent motion and exhibits a true long range ordered (LRO) state in two dimensions. Various studies show that the presence of spatial inhomogeneities can destroy the usual long-range ordering in the system. However, the effects of inhomogeneity due to the intrinsic properties of the particles are barely addressed. In this paper we consider a collection of polar SPPs moving with inhomogeneous speed (IS) on a two dimensional substrate, which can arise due to varying physical strength of the individual particle. To our surprise, the IS not only preserves the usual long-range ordering present in the homogeneous speed models but also induces faster ordering in the system. Furthermore, The response of the flock to an external perturbation is also faster, compared to Vicsek like model systems, due to the frequent update of neighbors of each SPP in the presence of the IS. Therefore, our study shows that the IS can help in faster information transfer in the moving flock.

The spin-Peierls transition at $T_{SP}$ of spin-$1/2$ chains with isotropic exchange interactions has previously been modeled as correlated for $T > T_{SP}$ and mean field for $T < T_{SP}$. We use correlated states throughout in the $J_1-J_2$ model with antiferromagnetic exchange $J_1$ and $J_2 = \alpha J_1$ between first and second neighbors, respectively, and variable frustration $0 \leq \alpha \leq 0.50$. The thermodynamic limit is reached at high $T$ by exact diagonalization of short chains and at low $T$ by density matrix renormalization group calculations of progressively longer chains. In contrast to mean field results, correlated states of 1D models with linear spin-phonon coupling and a harmonic adiabatic lattice provide an internally consistent description in which the parameter $T_{SP}$ yields both the stiffness and the lattice dimerization $\delta(T)$. The relation between $T_{SP}$ and $\Delta(\delta,\alpha)$, the $T = 0$ gap induced by dimerization, depends strongly on $\alpha$ and deviates from the BCS gap relation that holds in uncorrelated spin chains. Correlated states account quantitatively for the magnetic susceptibility of TTF-CuS$_4$C$_4$(CF$_3$)$_4$ crystals ($J_1 = 79$ K, $\alpha = 0$, $T_{SP} = 12$ K) and CuGeO$_3$ crystals ($J_1 = 160$ K, $\alpha = 0.35$, $T_{SP} = 14$ K). The same parameters describe the specific heat anomaly of CuGeO$_3$ and inelastic neutron scattering. Modeling the spin-Peierls transition with correlated states exploits the fact that $\delta(0)$ limits the range of spin correlations at $T = 0$ while $T > 0$ limits the range at $\delta= 0$., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures

It is well known that the pristine bulk of an interacting one-dimensional system in Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) phase shows power law suppression of quasi-particle tunneling amplitude for all values of TLL parameter $g$, in the zero energy limit. We perform a density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) study of a fully symmetric Y junction of TLL wires and observe an anomalous enhancement of the tunneling density of states (TDOS) in the vicinity of the junction for both (a) interacting bosons case and (b) interacting fermions case, when $g>1$. We also observe suppression of TDOS for $g<1$ for both bosonic and fermionic cases. We find that the TDOS enhancements follow different power laws for bosonic and fermionic cases which suggests that these represent distinct fixed points, owing to statistical correlations which play an important role at the Y junction. We introduce a minimal model for a two-dimensional polar flock with nonquenched rotators, and show that the rotators make the usual macroscopic long-range order of the flock more robust than the clean system. The rotators memorise the flock-information which helps in establishing the robustness. Moreover, the memory of the rotators assists in probing the moving flock. We also formulate a hydrodynamic framework for the microscopic model that makes our study comprehensive. Using linearised hydrodynamics, it is shown that the presence of such nonquenched heterogeneities increases the sound speeds of the flock. The enhanced sound speeds lead to faster convection of information and consequently the robust ordering in the system. We argue that similar nonquenched heterogeneities may be useful in monitoring and controlling large crowds.

We study an isotropic Heisenberg spin-1/2 model on a trellis ladder which is composed of two $J_1-J_2$ zigzag ladders interacting through anti-ferromagnetic rung couplings $J_3$. The $J_1$ and $J_2$ are ferromagnetic zigzag spin interaction between two legs and anti-ferromagnetic interaction along each leg of a zigzag ladder. A quantum phase diagram of this model is constructed using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method and linearized spin wave analysis. In small $J_2$ limit a short range stripe collinear phase is found in the presence of $J_3$, whereas, in the large $J_2/J_3$ limit non-collinear quasi-long range phase is found. The system shows a short range non-collinear state in large $J_3$ limit. The short range order phase is the dominant feature of this phase diagram. We also show that the results obtained by DMRG and linearized spin wave analysis show similar phase boundary between stripe collinear and non-collinear short range phases, and the collinear phase region shrinks with increasing $J_3$. We apply this model to understand the magnetic properties of CaV$_2$O$_5$ and also fit the experimental data of susceptibility and magnetization. The variation of magnetic specific heat capacity as function of external magnetic field is also predicted. The spin-Peierls transition is modeled in the dimer phase of the spin-$1/2$ chain with exchanges $J_1$, $J_2 = \alpha J_1$ between first and second neighbors. The degenerate ground state generates an energy cusp that qualitatively changes the dimerization $\delta(T)$ compared to Peierls systems with nondegenerate ground states. Exact diagonalization (ED) of small model systems gives the thermodynamics of spin chains or quantum cell models at high temperature $T$. Density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations of progressively larger systems are used to obtain excitations up to a cutoff $W_C$ and the low-$T$ thermodynamics. The hybrid approach is applied to the magnetic susceptibility $\chi(T)$ and specific heat $C(T)$ of spin-$1/2$ chains with isotropic exchange such as the linear Heisenberg antiferromagnet (HAF) and the frustrated $J_1-J_2$ model with ferromagnetic (F) $J_1 < 0$ and antiferromagnetic (AF) $J_2 > 0$. The hybrid approach is fully validated by comparison with HAF results. It extends $J_1-J_2$ thermodynamics down to $T \sim 0.01|J_1|$ for $J_2/|J_1| \geq \alpha_c = 1/4$ and is consistent with other methods. The criterion for the cutoff $W_C(N)$ in systems of $N$ spins is discussed. The cutoff leads to bounds for the thermodynamic limit that are best satisfied at a specific $T(N)$ at system size $N$.

The ground state properties of a frustrated spin-1/2 system is studied on a trellis ladder which is composed of two zigzag ladders interacting through rung interactions. The presence of rung interaction between the zigzag ladders induces a non-magnetic ground state, although, each of zigzag ladders has ferromagnetic order in weak antiferromagnetic leg interaction limit. The rung interaction also generates rung dimers and opens spin gap which increases rapidly with rung interaction strength. The correlation between spins decreases exponentially with the distance between them.

We examine the properties of a one-dimensional (1D) Fermi gas with attractive intrinsic (Hubbard) interactions in the presence of spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman field by numerically computing the pair binding energy, excitation gap, and susceptibility to local perturbations using the density matrix renormalization group. Such a system can, in principle, be realized in a system of ultracold atoms confined in a 1D optical lattice. We note that, in the presence of spatial interfaces introduced by a smooth parabolic potential, the pair binding and excitation energy of the system decays exponentially with the system size, pointing to the existence of an exponential ground state degeneracy, and is consistent with recent works. However, the susceptibility of the ground state degeneracy of this number-conserving system to local impurities indicates that the energy gap vanishes as a power law with the system size in the presence of local perturbations. We compare this system with the more familiar system of an Ising antiferromagnet in the presence of a transverse field realized with Rydberg atoms and argue that the exponential splitting in the clean number-conserving 1D Fermi system is similar to a phase with only conventional order., Comment: This is an updated version (accepted at PRB); 7 pages, 4 figures

A Heisenberg spin-$s$ chain with alternating ferromagnetic ($-J_1^F<0$) and antiferromagnetic ($J_1^A>0$) nearest-neighbor (NN) interactions, exhibits the Dimer and spin-$2s$ Haldane phases in the limits $J_1^F/J_1^A \rightarrow 0$ and $J_1^F/J_1^A \rightarrow \infty$ respectively. These two phases are understood to be topologically equivalent. Induction of the frustration through the next nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic interaction ($-J_2^F<0$) produces a very rich quantum phase diagram. With frustration, the whole phase diagram is divided into a ferromagnetic (FM) and a nonmagnetic (NM) phase. For $s=1/2$, the full NM phase is seen to be of Haldane-Dimer type, but for $s>1/2$, a spiral phase comes between the FM and the Haldane-Dimer phases. The study of a suitably defined string-order parameter and spin-gap at the phase boundary indicates that the Haldane-Dimer and spiral phases have different topological characters. We also find that, along the $J_2^F=\frac 12 J_1^F$ line in the NM phase, an NN dimer state is the {\it exact} groundstate, provided $J_1^A>J_C=\kappa J_1^F$ where $\kappa \le s + h$ for applied magnetic field $h$. Without magnetic field, the position of $J_C$ is on the FM-NM phase boundary when $s=1/2$, but for $s>1/2$, the location of $J_C$ is on the phase separation line between the Haldane-Dimer and spiral phases., Comment: 7+ pages, 5 figures; final version
