Abstract

Background: Semiarid lands possess limitations of climate such as low and erratic rainfall, long dry spell, high potential evapotranspiration and lesser length of growing period which directly influence the yield and productivity of crop along with the soil properties. Pigeon pea, being one of the most dominant pulse crops cultivated in the semiarid Deccan plateau, an understanding on the soils where pigeon pea is mainly grown and the evaluation of their land suitability was found to be essential. Methods: Land resource inventory at 1:10,000 scale was carried out in Mahabubnagar Rural mandal, Mahabubnagar district, Telangana state of South Deccan plateau to characterize the major pigeon pea growing soils and their land suitability evaluation. Result: When the entire study area was evaluated for its suitability, majority of the area (32.79%) was marginally suitable, followed by moderately suitable area (16.24%) with moderate to severe limitations of nutrient availability, rooting conditions, gravelliness and texture and a very small area of 5.55 per cent was found to be highly suitable towards the crop. Out of the 18 soil series identified, only five were the major pigeon pea soils which were mostly marginally suitable (S3) with limitations of nutrient availability, slope, effective root depth and texture. Though the climatic characteristics of the area were highly favourable to the crop classified under the highly suitable class (S1), rooting conditions, nutrient availability and slope were the major limitations towards the cultivation and productivity of pigeon pea. Abstract

Evaluating soil quality in the alluvial plains of the semi-arid tropics is vital to understand the impact of existing land management practices, thus facilitating the adoption of more sustainable agricultural methods. We analysed soil profiles using 146 horizon-specific samples from 24 pedons, representing seven soil series from the sub-tropical to semi-arid River Cauvery Delta basin, Tamil Nadu, India. Using principal component analysis (PCA), we identified minimum datasets (MDS) from 30 different soil properties. The plough layer's MDS were clay content, exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP), very coarse sand content, soil pH and soil organic carbon (SOC). For the subsurface layer, sand content, ESP, SOC, diethylene-triamine-pentaacetic acid extractable zinc (DTPA-Zn), and very coarse sand content were identified as the MDS. Soil quality index (SQI) values were 0.47-0.72 for the plough layer and 0.46-0.56 for the subsurface soil, suggesting limited soil function support in subsurface soils. Surface soil-site suitability criteria displayed a moderate correlation with SQI values derived via PCA, with additive (R2 = .545) and weighted additive indices (R2 = .659). Both simple additive index and weighted derived SQIs demonstrated a moderate association with rice yield (R2 = .50 and .55, respectively). 18. Characterization and Classification of Soils of Tumkur District, Karnataka Based on Organic Carbon Stocks as an Index of Land Degradation.

Abstract

The detailed reconnaissance soil survey was carried out in Tumkur district of Karnataka to characterize, classify and study organic carbon stocks of degradation vulnerable soils during 2021-2023 using remote sensing, GIS and field studies. Satellite imageries (Sentinal -2) of three-seasons were used along with soil map to delineate the degraded soils through visual image interpretation. Using this as base map, resource characterization was done. Thirteen soil pedons were studied from Tumkur district covering major soils. Four representative pedons (Kurubarahalli, Koratagere; Huliyurdurga, Kunigal; Chinnenahalli, Sira and Hosahalli forest, Gubbi) to study characterization and classification of soils of Tumkur district, Karnataka based on organic carbon. The granite, gneissic and schistose landform, with dykes and laterized parent material give rise to well, somewhat excessive or moderately well drained soils. The soils were generally deep, non-gravelly to very gravelly with sandy clay loam to clayey texture. Moderately acid to moderately alkaline Specify with low to high organic carbon content were observed. CEC/clay ratio ranged from 0.14 to 0.70 and base saturation varied from 46.31 to 79.98 per cent. The available water holding capacity ranged from 42.84 to 77.55 mm m-1 with highest organic carbon stock in Hosahalli forest of Gubbi (9.82 kg m-3) and the least in Kurubarahalli village of Koratagere (1.93 kg m-3) upto 150 cm. The major taxa of the soil identified at sub-group level of soil taxonomy were Rhodic Kanhaplustalfs, Typic Rhodustalfs, Rhodic Kandiustalfs and Fluventic Haplustepts. Use of remote sensing and GIS techniques along with field studies is ideal for assessing land qualities of Tumkur district. This can help in identifying and encountering problems created by land degradation processes over a period of time along with exposure to adverse climatic conditions, land management and other anthropogenic interventions for ensuring sustainable management of land with enhanced productivity. Abstract

Knowledge of the spatial distribution of soil nutrients is essential for site-specific nutrient management, which forms an effective strategy in precision agriculture. As mango is one of southern Karnataka's most important horticultural crops, the present study was conducted on 108 mango orchards under different agro-climatic zones to assess spatial nutrient variability for nutrient management. The soils of the study areas were acidic and non-saline. Nitrogen (N) deficiency was found in 84.26 percent area, whereas phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) contents were medium in most soils. Sulphur was sufficient, and calcium and magnesium contents varied with agro-climatic zones. The micronutrient (Zn, Fe, Mn) status was sufficient, except for copper and boron. The nutrient index for nitrogen was low, while phosphorus and potassium were low to medium. It is inferred that agro-management should include proper nitrogen fertilization, FYM, and boron throughout the growing cycle for better yield and quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A study was carried out to characterize and classify major Bangalore Blue grapes-growing soils of Karnataka and to assess the inherent fertility of these soils for cultivation. Four locations were selected on the basis of concentration of Bangalore Blue grapes-growing areas of Karnataka and delineated based on the variability of agro-climate with the help of land resource map and report of Karnataka state, generated at 1: 2,50,000 scale by ICAR - NBSSLUP, Bangalore. The regions included Bangalore North - GKVK farm and Bangalore North-Rajankunte with Doddaballapur and Hosakote belonging to eastern dry zone of Karnataka, which are endowed with hot moist semi-arid tropical climate at an elevation of 850-900 m above MSL that exclusively produces 52,240 tonnes of Bangalore blue grapes from 2,791 ha per year for a long while. Soil profiles were studied at these selected sites. The major Bangalore blue grapes-growing soils of Karnataka are generally dark red, deep, non-gravelly and well drained, sandy clay or clayey in texture with moderate, medium and sub-angular blocky structure. Soils were slightly acidic to neutral in reaction and low to medium in soil organic carbon status. Cation exchange capacity and base saturation varied from low or medium and moderate or high, respectively. The major taxa of the soils identified at sub-group level of soil taxonomy are Rhodic Kandiustalfs, Kandic Paleustalfs, Typic Rhodustalfs and Typic Haplustalfs in the order of soil development. The study along with assessed fertility status could evolve the soil test based application of OM, nitrogenous and K containing fertilizers as a routine mechanism in developing a decision support system for successful cultivation of Bangalore blue grapes variety in eastern dry zone of Karnataka. 37. Soil Fertility Characterisation of Intensive Rice-Growing Soils in Selected Agro-Climatic Zones of Karnataka.

Abstract

A study was conducted for fertility characterisation of selected rice growing soils from different taluks of agroclimatic zones of Karnataka. Soil profiles one each from the studied eight agro-climatic zones representing intensively rice growing areas were chosen for the fertility characterisation so as to account the variability of soils developed under different agro-climatic situations. Results of the study revealed that the studied pedons P1, P2 and P6 were having alkaline soil reaction (7.55, 8.02 and 7.87, respectively) whereas pedons P4, P5, P7 and P8 were recorded with acidic soil reaction (4.93, 5.56, 6.01 and 5.07, respectively) and P3 pedon was having neutral soil pH (7.16). Pedons were low in available nitrogen and potassium except P8 (331.16 kg/ha for N) and P2 (283.36 kg/ha for K). Surface horizons of all pedons were recorded with high phosphorus status. Available Fe, Mn and Cu were sufficient for surface soils of all pedons whereas, Zn was found deficient for P2, P5 and P7 pedons and B was found deficient for all profiles except P3 profile. Very high values for S (35.84 mg kg-1) and Fe (430.98 mg kg-1) in lower most horizon of Bantwal (P8) pedon of coastal zone may be due to the marine depositional activity of sulphidic materials. Nutrient availability in a soil is governed by its pH and better nutrient availability can be expected only at neutral soil reaction. Hence, proper and adequate measures like amelioration of soil acidity/alkalinity need to be adopted for bringing the soils to favorable soil reactions (all pedons except P3) to a better fertility and productivity conditions. Abstract

The genus Curcuma L. have been used in traditional medicine from ancient times. The essential oil content of the genus is of great importance and has demonstrated a wide variety of properties. Moreover, studies on the chemotaxonomical and characterization of Curcuma species have a significant role in the selection of genotype with higher yield and better quality. This study gives the histochemical localization and quantification of the oil cells, and a chromatographic fingerprinting of essential oil from the leaves of six species of Curcuma, validated using HPLC techniques. Further, correlation analysis of the histochemical parameters exhibited high positive correlation (0.886), statistically significant at *p ≤ 0.05 and **p ≤ 0.01, respectively, between the oil content and oil index. The result obtained gives a relative description on the histochemical parameters along with the chromatographic fingerprinting which might be relevantly utilized in species identification. Abstract

Friction stir welding (FSW) dissimilar joints of aluminium alloys of 2024-T351 and 7075-T651 were produced by reinforcing silicon carbide nano particle (SiCNP) in the rectangular cut groove made on the adjoining surface of the two dissimilar alloy plates joined in the butt configuration. A FSW tool of taper threaded cylindrical shape is used for producing the FSW dissimilar joints reinforced with SiCNP in the weld nugget zone (WNZ) and to produce metal matrix nano composite (MMNC) at the WNZ. In the experimental investigation, the constant FSW tool traverse speed of 40 mm/min and tool plunge depth of 6.2 mm/min is kept as constant, while the FSW tool rotation speed was varied from 400 rpm to 1800 rpm. The effect continuous varying tool rotation speed range from 400 rpm to 1800 rpm along the weld length and on the distribution of SiCNP in WNZ is analysed by conducting macro and microstructure study using optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) provided with energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). In the experimental investigation, the combination of continuous varying FSW tool rotation speed range from 900rpm to 1150 rpm, constant tool traverse speed range 40 mm/min and tool plunge depth of 6.2 mm results in defect free, proper distribution of SiCNP and highest tensile properties for the FSW dissimilar joints. The highest ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 380 MPa and yield strength (YS) of 150 MPa was observed for the combination of FSW tool rotation speed of 1000 rpm and tool traverse speed of 40 mm/min. The increasing in FSW tool rotation speed above 1250 rpm results in non homogeneous distribution of SiCNP in WNZ, excessive flash in the weld crown area and shows decreasing tendency in the tensile properties of the FSW dissimilar weld joints produced with reinforcing the SiCNP in the WNZ. Abstract

Soil nutrients are essential for crop growth. Spatial variability of nutrients can occur in various scales, between regions, between fields or within the field. RS and GIS techniques enables farm management based on small-scale spatial variability of soil and crop parameters in the field. The present study was carried out in Nagenahalli microwatershed, Doddaballapur taluk, Bangalore rural district with the objective to determine and map the macronutrient status of soils in the watershed using GIS technique. The NPK was analyzed and mapped using Arc GIS to quantify the level of spatial nutrients availability. Results indicated that NPK ranged from 31.36 to 376.32 kg ha-1(N), 21.29 to 390.62 kg ha-1 (P2O5) and 55.10 to 521.47 kg ha-1 (K2O) respectively in the surface soils. Nutrient map showed that the soils were poor in available nitrogen and available potassium whereas sufficient in available phosphorous content.
