PHILOSOPHICAL literature , *ART conservation & restoration , *ART ,BYZANTINE Empire ,ROMAN Empire, 30 B.C.-A.D. 476 - Abstract
Byzantium, throughout its thousand-year reign, left a significant legacy that continues to be rediscovered within the framework of modern academic studies. The Byzantine Empire embodied the heritage of Hellenic culture and tradition alongside the continuity of the Roman Empire. However, its most distinct characteristic, besides the two aforementioned, was Christianity in its specific form known as the Eastern Orthodox tradition. A pivotal moment for the modern study of philosophy within Byzantium arrived in the mid-20th century. This specifically refers to the publication of Byzantine Philosophy by Vasilios Tatakis in Emil Bréhier's History of Philosophy series (1949). In the introductory remarks of this work, Tatakis emphasizes that while increased interest in Byzantium emerged in the 18th century, philosophy often seemed to be an afterthought within this growing focus. John of Damascus (8th century) did not live within the borders of the Byzantine Empire, but rather in Damascus, which was then part of the Umayyad Caliphate. Nevertheless, his significant influence can be traced primarily within Byzantine philosophy and literature, particularly through his work Dialectica. Additionally, his contribution to culture is evident in the preservation of visual art and the veneration of icons within Byzantium, thanks to his theoretical considerations and persistent rhetorical and polemical writings. Furthermore, his rich literary output encompasses both poetry and prose works. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ESSENTIALISM (Philosophy) , *EXISTENTIALISM , *GREEK tragedy , *SPEECH , *METAPHYSICS - Abstract
Dialogue (diálogos) is a fundamental concept in the existential foundations of philosophy, and metaphysics, from Aristotle to the present day, has been the fundamental form and very essence of philosophy. The first forms of dialogue can be traced back to ancient Greek tragedy, which portrays fateful events. In these tragedies, the chorus and actors engage in a dialogue that goes beyond everyday conversation. It serves to represent and understand these fateful events, involving both the posing of a thesis (statement) and its antithesis (opposition) in ancient Greek terms. This logical and linguistic structure finds its foundation in the concept of logos, which for Heraclitus extends beyond mere speech or words. The foundations of philosophical dialogue lie partly in ancient tragedy and partly in Heraclitus' concept of the struggle of opposites. Dialogue is a form of communication aimed at overcoming misunderstandings. It is distinct in its origin, foundation, and multifaceted development from both discussion and dispute. Particularly in the context of contemporary communication, it is valuable to revisit some of the elements and characteristics that differentiate these terms. From a historical perspective, philosophical dialogues are not always unambiguous or unified in form. Therefore, it is important to re-emphasize the core thread and crucial significance of philosophical dialogue, which has persisted for millennia and embodies the "eternal return" to humanity's metaphysical quest for truth and meaning. ALCOHOL drinking , *POWER (Social sciences) , *ALCOHOLISM , *TRUST , *CULTURE - Abstract
While research into alcohol abuse is abundant, the science of how differing cultures view and respond to mild work-related alcohol consumption has been scientifically neglected. This article displays results from surveys conducted over a 7-year period and pivots around the cultural dimensions ‘Power distance’, ‘Individualism’, Indulgence’ and ‘Interpersonal trust’ which are correlated with motivators, responses and acceptance levels of mild work-related alcohol consumption. The strongest motivator for participating in mild work-related drinking was ‘To celebrate with colleagues’, which achieved significance with all cultural dimensions except power distance, which in contrast, achieved significance with the motivator ‘To bring out the real character’ of the counterpart. Power distance also correlated strongly with negative emotions regarding the refusal of a drink when offered by a senior. Altogether, 52 correlation tests were conducted of which 18 achieved significance. We believe that a better understanding of this topic will increase the likelihood of obtaining a harmonious workplace that lessens employee misunderstandings and conflict. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Najczęstsze zajwiska pozajęzykowe to ruchy migracyjne, wydarzenia polityczne, wydarzenia nadnaturalne i uwarunkowane cywilizacyjnie.

UNESCO (2013: 16) describes "intercultural competences" as: (1) the necessary linguistic knowledge and awareness when interacting with people from different cultures; (2) relevant knowledge about specific cultures; (3) broad comprehension about the issues that arise when members of different cultures interact; (4) adaptable attitudes that encourage creating and sustaining contact with diverse members of society. The development of intercultural competence has increasingly been recognized as a vital aim of foreign language (L2) education. The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between courses related to the culture of English-speaking countries and the development of intercultural communicative competence of English philology students. Specifically, it explores participants' opinions on whether the culture courses support students' ability to acquire academic-level communicative competence, fluency in formal and informal language, and a holistic understanding of the spectrum of Anglophone communities. The participants of the study were English philology students and lecturers teaching culture courses. A mixed methodology was used with two types of research methods: a student survey and semi-structured interviews with lecturers. The results of the study allow for a formulation of didactic implications for the development of intercultural competence of English philology students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article deals with methodological issues related to ensuring the presence of French culture in practical classes of French, with the focus that culture is an integral part of the language and provides comprehensive acquisition of the French language. This culturally related material during classes gives students the opportunity to gain knowledge about France, including current topics. When working with cultural issues students can deepen and build systematic knowledge of the country (France), its history, geography, population, political system, literature and more, as well as understand the French people's characteristics, traditions and customs. This article will mainly look at the contemporary French language, vocabulary and spelling. In the process of teaching students modern French there is a need to discuss also French people's character traits, beliefs and values, behaviour, sense of humour, relaxation and entertainment, eating and drinking, health and hygiene, and the government. Efficient use of culture in learning French depends on its systematic and systemic classroom practice throughout the school year. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ach of the round anniversaries of the Queen’s reign took place in a different socio-political climate, reflecting the dynamics of change in the United Kingdom. Elizabeth II celebrated the Silver Jubilee in 1977, the Golden Jubilee in 2002, the Diamond Jubilee in 2012, the Sapphire Jubilee of her reign in 2017 and finally, in 2022, the Platinum Jubilee. Although so much has changed since the Silver Jubilee, the Queen, through the preservation of her stance, has become a symbol of constancy and stability not only among Britons or Commonwealth citizens but perhaps also among people from other cultural areas of the world. All those anniversaries were abundantly and thoroughly reported in various national newspapers. However, the language applied to present the 2022 Platinum Jubilee by the popular press, and the language employed by the quality press to describe the same event differed significantly. The case study presented in this article shows how popular press representatives such as “Daily Mirror”, “The Sun” and “Sunday Mirror” and quality press representatives, “The Guardian” and “The Sunday Times” vary linguistically while delivering the same information to the reader. The case study contains the frequency and choice of idiomatic application, play on words and overall cultural significance.

The text aims to investigate various uses of the mid-century modern period pieces in the production design of films and TV series developed after the year 2000 and presenting various visions of a dystopic future. The choice of time frame for the analysis was motivated by the desire to showcase the connotations between the mid-century modern and 21st-century visions of the future which can be broadly described as retrofuturistic. On account of its primary focus on progressive ideas, new materials and forms, mid-century modern has always been broadly associated with the design of the future. The author discusses various takes on set design to highlight a wide spectrum of narrations regarding the future and its cultural dimension in selected productions incorporating iconic mid-century design pieces and, more importantly, the non-verbal message they carry.

Autorka omawia pojęcie kultury w Rysie Dzieiow Kultury i Oswiecenia Narodu Polskiego (1816) Ignacego Lubicz Czerwińskiego. Była to jedna z pierwszych propozycji uporządkowanej refleksji o kulturze w polskim piśmiennictwie w czasie, kiedy dominowało w nim jeszcze użycie słowa „cywilizacja”.

JUDAISM , *BOOK titles , *RECOMMENDED books , *NINETEENTH century , *INVENTORIES - Abstract
The purpose of this article is the source characterization of the property inventories of Lublin Jews and the indication of the possibility of their use in the study of the history and culture of this community. The source base are inventories collected as a result of a query conducted by the Notaries of the City of Lublin in the years 1810-1863. As a result of source searches, ninety-eight lists of the remains belonging to the following categories of inhabitants of the Jewish district in Lublin were collected: merchants, craftsmen, property owners, people dealing with finances, and small traders. Detailed inventories contain information about the owner and his family, as well as real estate, household equipment, clothing, and other personal items. Almost half of the inventories list the titles of individual books or lists of larger book collections. The above-mentioned sources, due to their mass nature, allow us to go beyond individual findings and authorize us to formulate more general judgments. Inventories from notarial records are therefore a valuable source for expanding knowledge of genealogy, everyday life, material and spiritual culture, and religion of Lublin Jews in the first half of the nineteenth century. LANGUAGE maintenance , *LANGUAGE revival , *LINGUISTIC identity , *ARCHETYPES , *SYMBOLISM - Abstract
The purpose of this scientific research is to explore the essence of geographical identity and its epistemological significance in the context of globalization. The methodological basis of the study is the general philosophical principles of objectivity, universal connection and development, unity of historical and logical, axiological, phenomenological and hermeneutic methods and a systematic approach based on the universal laws of society. The triune essence of geographic identity is explicated by three groups of factors - factuality, conventionality, and symbolism. Factors of factuality include primary sensory-somatic experience, formed on the border of existence with activity. The factors of conventionality of geographical identity are substantiated in the aspects of spatiotemporal thinking which consolidates the system of conditions - metaphorical similarities and metonymic contiguities as archetypes of geographic location, forming an essential model of being and forming strategies of behavior. The factors of symbolism are substantiated from the perspective of allusions to the extra-linguistic analogous reality, which constitutes the paradigmatic of geographical identity. CHRISTIAN spirituality , *RUSSIAN invasion of Ukraine, 2022- , *COVID-19 pandemic , *THEOLOGIANS , *GOD in Christianity - Abstract
This article points to the plight of man in the 21st century and his intimidating spiritual and axiological confusion. The 2020 COVID pandemic, the 2022 war in Ukraine and high economic inflation have exposed the lack of stable ethical values and lasting references for Europe. On the one hand, many EU citizens live today in uncertainty and fear, falling in line with populist slogans, and on the other hand, strong xenophobic and fundamentalist currents have emerged in the Catholic Church. Europe is arguably not so much in need of a return to over-institutionalized Christianity, but rather of a search for new forms and systems that would express the ideas of Jesus of Nazareth in innovative ways. Postmodernity with its characteristic elements, i.e., pluralization, mercantilization and rapid change, seem to be completely incompatible with the conventionally accepted Christian understanding of God, the concept of man and the world around him. Therefore, this is a great challenge to all Christian theologians. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
