Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are promising materials already being used in bridge construction. Lightweight deck panels, mainly used in the rehabilitation or replacement of existing bridges, are the most commonly used FRP bridge components. However, FRP decks are prone to damage due to delamination, matrix cracking, interlaminar cracking, and debonding. In addition, due to their microstructure, FRP materials tend to deteriorate in ways that are not easily detected by visual inspection. Therefore, nondestructive methods should often complement visual inspections aimed at assessing the technical condition of the structure. New measurement techniques are constantly being researched and developed to assist in the evaluation of FRP structures. Distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) has been chosen as the main measurement technique of the newly developed FRP bridge deck panel because this technique provides extended advantages compared to the conventional spot gauges. The concept of a component with an integrated DFOS-based system capable of structural control and detection of overloaded vehicles has been developed and verified both in laboratory conditions. The novelty of the presented approach is that sensors (strain-sensing fibers) are precisely embedded in FRP laminates for simultaneous internal strain and vertical displacement (shape change) measurements and delamination detection. The experimental verification of a full-scale deck under static and dynamic loading is described in the paper. The performance of the DFOS system was verified using reference techniques. The paper presents the smart FRP composite bridge panel called „OptiDeck" with integrated distributed fibre optic sensors (DFOS), to monitor the panel's behavior. The panel is intended for use in newly build and refurbished road bridges. From structure point of view the uniqueness of the presented solution results from innovative technological production process to create a honeycomb core in thick sandwich panel. In order for the monitoring system to cover the entire surface of the panel and to detect local damage, it was necessary to use a modern solution based on geometrically continuous DFOS system. The DFOS system serves as the structure health monitoring (SHM) system, which has been tested during the production and laboratory testing of a prototypes in natural scale. The advantages of DFOS measurements are well known and applied in many civil engineering applications. However, the potential benefits are still not fully utilized. The relatively new fibre optic measurement technique: distributed fibre optic sensing (DFOS) is provided to control strains and displacements, used in the structural health monitoring of a decommissioned wind turbine blade (WTB) bridge girder. The DFOS system is characterized by the following features: accurate, reliable and continuous strain measurements, possibility of assessing shape and displacements, detection of local damages, high durability. Exemplary results of DFOS measurements performed under laboratory conditions on the full‐scale WTB bridge girder are presented. The paper describes the concept of the WTB bridge girder with integrated DFOS monitoring system to control the girder's behavior under loading. Exemplary data of DFOS efficiency were presented and the overall accuracy and reliability of the DFOS measurement system were revealed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper presents the selected research results on the development of a novel fibre-reinforced polymer sandwich decking system dedicated for bridge applications and applied in the first Polish all-composite vehicular bridge. Based on a review of recently implemented similar systems, the novel solution has been proposed and checked according to relevant codes as a part of all-composite bridge design. Due to the novelty of sandwich design, the comprehensive structural testing has been carried out to verify design assumptions as well as to assess its stiffness, strength and safety. In order to find the optimized structural solution of fibre-reinforced polymer deck, the laboratory tests were conducted on several FRP sandwich panels having various core foam density and internal ribs' fabric architecture. The panels were subjected to three loading schemes to check their response under bending, shear and bearing as well as to examine their structural behaviour up to failure and corresponding failure modes. The stiffness, strength and safety against failure were experimentally determined. In this paper, the test results have been compared to the ultimate and serviceability limit state design criteria formulated in the European guidelines and applied in an actual bridge design.
