Search

New records of Hyles vespertilio (Esper, 1780) are reported from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. In Croatia, a single specimen was recorded on Mt. Biokovo, within the Biokovo Nature Park, southern Croatia. This is the first record in the country in 44 years. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the species was recorded at 11 localities within or in the near surroundings of the Blidinje Nature Park. This species is new to the fauna of Bosnia and Herzegovina and is the 20th Sphingidae species recorded in the country. In Serbia, the species was recorded in Krajinoviće, Mt. Giljeva. This is the third known record and the first observation for this country in 32 years. The preferred host plant, Epilobium dodonaei, is present at all the studied localities in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, but the caterpillars were not surveyed during this work. Posljednjih godina znanost o biološkoj raznolikosti i očuvanju prirode može mnogo zahvaliti znanstvenim projektima građana (Citizen Science projekti), koji su pomogli uključiti više ljudi. Projekti su rezultirali značajnim povećanjem dostupnih podataka o biološkoj raznolikosti i omogućili istraživačima pristup velikim novim skupovima podataka. Paralelno s tim, razvijali su se različiti softveri za biološku raznolikost koji se koriste za prikupljanje, pohranu i čak analizu tih podataka, ali su uglavnom ograničeni na središnju i sjevernu Europu.

This paper presents the first evidence of a rare moth, Baptria tibiale (Esper, 1804) for the fauna of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The species was recorded on Kukavica Lake in western Bosnia on July 2nd, 2021. In 2018 several more populations of O. communa were registered by Karrer (unpublished) from Trieste towards Ljubljana along the highway E61. In 2019 several more populations south and east of Ljubljana were detected, linked to subordinated roads and railroads. In Slovenia the easternmost finding was 35 km east of Ljubljana. The populations in Croatia agglomerate in 2018 southeast of Zagreb and more than doubled its range to the east and west in 2019 (Zadravec, Horvatić & Prpić, unpublished). Two new observations are documented most recently in the iNaturalist database (https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/50185018) by the user “danamihaimileazachi” for Romania in Bucharest (near the airport). Most recently, Kulijer (unpublished) found Ophraella communa in Northern Bosnia & Hercegovia not far from the Croatian populations. Thus, the invasion of O. communa to the southern part of the Pannonian plain as well as to the central part of the Balkans is ongoing. For 2020, we expect some more findings in direction of the central part of the Pannonian plain (Hungary), Serbia, and Austria (Follak et al. 2014) Long distance dispersal like the occurrence in Bucharest last year might have been promoted by vehicles (cars, trucks trains, airplanes). Entrapment and transport by motor vehicles is documented by Zadravec (2019) and Karrer (in Schmidt 2020). We assume that the expansion at the local scale is rather due to the well-developed flight ability of the beetles. Zadravec et al. (2019) stated that the beetle might be able to produce three or more generations per year under the climatic conditions of the southwestern Pannonian plain, and Augustinus et. al. (2020) predict four to five generations per year and highest population build-up for the most suitable areas in Europe, i.e. for northern Italy and parts of western Russia and western Georgia. This makes an effective local expansion of the populations very plausible. The spread of Ophraella communa is a continuing process that can be “monitored” better if more researchers working in the field, and even the general public, are made aware of this beetle. The local spread looks continuous whereas the regional spread represents rather a discontinuous process due to very uncertain containment in people’s vehicles and traffic routes.

Carabus (variolosus) nodulosus Creutzer, 1799 is a species of European conservation concern listed in the Annexes II and IV of the Habitats Directive. In Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) it is a rare species, up till now known mainly from historic records. In this paper the authors summarize for Bosnia and Herzegovina all the available data of C. (v.) nodulosus from literature, museum and private collections. In total, records from 19 localities are presented, including records of five new populations from central, eastern and northern part of the country. New populations were found in wet habitats along the banks of streams in deciduous and mixed forests at altitudes between 390 and 1.190 m a. An old record from Trebević Mt. at 1.600 m a. represents the highest reported altitude for the species. Considering the large number of potentially suitable habitats, especially in the northern and eastern part of BiH, it is expected to confirm a wider distribution of the species in the future. The habitat characteristics of the new finding sites are in accordance with the ecological needs of the species described in detail in literature. The distribution of the species in the West Balkan area (former Yugoslavia countries) is outlined in the paper and a short discussion on the conservation status of the species in Bosnia and Herzegovina is appended.

Dragonfly research in the West Balkans experienced significant boost in recent years, also due to the establishment of the Balkan OdonatOlogical Meetings (BOOM) in 2011. The main goal of BOOM is to contribute to research and protection of dragonflies of the Balkan Peninsula. This paper presents the faunistic results of the 5th BOOM, held in Republic of Macedonia. Between 7 and 15 August 2015, 46 sites were surveyed and 41 dragonfly species found. This represents more than half of the hitherto recorded dragonfly species for the country. This paper includes data for localities and habitats from central and southern part of R. Macedonia, which was less investigated in the past. Significant results include the first documented report of Selysiothemis nigra for the country. New data on several species with a comparably low number of previously published records for R. Macedonia, i.e. Chalcolestes parvidens, Caliaeschna microstigma, Lindenia tetraphylla, Cordulegaster heros, C. bidentata, C. insignis, Somatochlora meridionalis, S. flavomaculata, Sympetrum vulgatum and S. flaveolum, are also presented and brief discussion is provided. Raziskovanje kačjih pastirjev je na zahodnem Balkanu v zadnjih letih doživelo velik napredek. Slednje je tudi rezultat vzpostavitve širšega balkanskega odonatološkega sodelovanja v okviru Mednarodnih srečanj odonatologov Balkana (BOOM), ki potekajo od leta 2011 dalje. Glavni cilj srečanj je prispevati k raziskavam in varstvu kačjih pastirjev balkanskega polotoka. Ta prispevek predstavlja favnistične rezultate 5. BOOM, ki je potekal v Republiki Makedoniji. Na 46 pregledanih lokalitetah smo med 7. in 15. avgustom 2015 popisali 41 vrst kačjih pastirjev, kar je več kot polovica vseh znanih vrst kačjih pastirjev Republike Makedonije. Članek vključuje podatke za lokalitete in habitate osrednjega in južnega dela države, ki je bil v preteklosti slabo raziskan. Pomembnejši rezultati vključujejo prvo dokumentirano poročanje o pojavljanju temnega slaniščarja (Selysiothemis nigra) za državo. Zabeležena so tudi nova nahajališča v R. Makedoniji redkih vrst kačjih pastirjev. Ti so: presenetljiva pazverca (Chalcolestes parvidens), bledi vetrnjak (Caliaeschna microstigma), velika peščenka (Lindenia tetraphylla), veliki, povirni in modrooki studenčar (Cordulegaster heros, C. bidentata, C. insignis), sredozemski in pegasti lesketnik (Somatochlora meridionalis, S. flavomaculata) ter navadni in rumeni kamenjak (Sympetrum vulgatum, S. flaveolum).
