School exhaustion among upper secondary school students has increased at an alarming rate in recent years. There is evidence that this exhaustion affects students' ability to study, and that students experience their studies as burdensome. Distance learning has further weakened students' ability to study. This study aimed to describe upper secondary students' experiences of how exercise breaks affect their studying and well-being. The data were collected through thematic interviews with 15 first-year upper secondary students in the spring of 2021. The data were analyzed by inductive content analysis. The results indicate that exercise breaks positively influenced students' subjective experiences of their studying ability and well-being. This insight could be relevant to planning secondary education, teacher training, and school health care, along with the development of services to support well-being among upper secondary students.

This study focuses on collegiality competence among social and healthcare educators, aiming to identify profiles and factors linked to these profiles. The importance of collegiality for educators' career growth and workplace well-being has been recognized, but less attention has been given to specific profiles and their underlying factors. Data from educators in vocational institutions and universities of applied sciences were collected using the CollegialityComp instrument, assessing five competence areas: 1) individual-centered collaboration, 2) educator action and fairness, 3) collaboration among colleagues, 4) collaboration outside the organization, and 5) communication and trust. Three educator profiles emerged: Profile A displayed high competence in all areas, Profile B showed strong competence in certain areas, and Profile C demonstrated intermediate competence across all. Education and job title significantly linked to specific profiles. Educators with doctoral degrees had lower collegiality levels. The findings suggest the importance of facilitating external collaboration for educators and providing extra support for high-degree educators to enhance their collegial behavior. Additional resources may be needed to bolster the collegiality competence of educators with significant responsibilities.

Background: Health sciences education prepares students for social- and healthcare by developing evidence-based nursing, leadership and working life skills, including collaboration. Due to the changes caused by the global pandemic, health sciences education has shifted more to online and hybrid contexts, which can challenge students' competence development. Students' competence development and interaction in collaborative hybrid learning is a little researched area. Objectives: To observe and evaluate health sciences students' competence development in a collaborative hybrid learning context. Methods: This quasi-experimental mixed-method study was implemented by providing educational intervention. First-year Bachelor's degree health sciences students (n = 18) of a Finnish university completed an educational intervention with synchronous online and face-to-face learning. Students' collaborative hybrid learning and interaction were video observed, while self-evaluation of competence development was made with a questionnaire. Results: In the collaborative interactions, the students showed analytical thinking, problem- solving and communication and technology skills. Extensive knowledge of health sciences and ethics skills was not strongly visible in interaction. The students effectively used collaborative work time to perform tasks. Cognitive interaction (monitoring and evaluating learning) was observed in 85% and socio-emotional interaction (expressions of emotions and motivation) in 53% of the data. Related to the students' learning results, the students' ability to communicate and interact with culturally different people improved after the educational intervention. Conclusion: Collaborative learning methods in hybrid learning can create opportunities for students to construct their competence in interaction. Attention should be paid to different areas of competence and the role of socio-emotional interaction.

The ongoing change from traditional pedagogy to digital collaborative learning requires a new mode of teaching, learning, and educators' responsibilities. For competence in digitally mediated teaching, educators need understanding of how to provide appropriate digital environment to learn collectively and individually. The aim of this study was to describe and explore health and social care educators' perceptions of their current level of competence in digital collaborative learning and identify distinct educators' profiles. Data were collected via cross-sectional survey from educators in 21 universities of applied science and eight vocational colleges in Finland using an instrument covering two subdimensions: educators' competence in fostering construction of knowledge in digital collaborative learning, and supporting students in individualized collaborative learning. The data were analyzed by statistical methods. Three significantly differing clusters of educators' profiles were identified, and a significant association between type of current work organization and their self-reported competence in digital collaborative learning was found. The vocational college educators rated their competence in fostering construction of knowledge in digital collaborative learning as significantly lower than higher education educators. There were also remarkable differences in competence in supporting students' individual collaborative learning. To provide such support, sufficient competence in teaching in digital learning environment is essential, and our study highlights clear needs to enhance this competence.

The role of clinical nurse educators is essential in improving the quality of mentoring, supporting students' learning and professional development during clinical training. The purpose was to explore the competence profiles of clinical nurse educators and background factors associated with these profiles. Data of this cross-sectional study were collected from clinical nurse educators (n = 19) at Finnish university hospitals, using two instruments measuring the competence of healthcare educators. Data were analysed with K-means clustering and two profiles were identified based on sum variables. Significance between the differences of Profile 1 and Profile 2 was evaluated by comparing independent groups. The STROBE checklist was used as the reporting guideline for the manuscript. Educators' competence varied between intermediate (2.50–3.49) and high (≥ 3.50) levels, and self-assessment of the Profile 1 was average higher than those in Profile 2. The results can be used to identify and develop the competence of clinical nurse educators and to consolidate the role and position of clinical nurse educators within healthcare education. During clinical practice, students become acquainted with the key work tasks associated with their professions. Students need more support from healthcare educators during clinical practice learning, particularly in challenging situations. This study aimed to describe healthcare educators' experiences of challenging situations during clinical practice placements. A qualitative study design was used to collect data through interviews with ten healthcare educators from two higher education institutions. The data were analyzed with inductive content analysis. The SRQR reporting guidelines were used to improve the transparency of the study. Educator reactions commonly involved emotional, goal-oriented and pedagogical support towards their students. The interviewed educators felt that mentors – when facing a challenging situation during clinical practice – are tasked with creating an atmosphere that supports student learning. Students faced challenges that were related to self-evaluation, goal-oriented activities, and their attitudes towards feedback. The social and health care educator's role in educating future professionals need to be stronger emphasised and deserves international recognition. The purpose of this study was to develop and test an empirical model of social and health care educators' competence in higher and professional education. The presented research employed a cross‐sectional study design. Data were collected using HeSoEduCo‐instrument from 28 educational institutions in Finland. The model was empirically tested with confirmatory factor analysis through Structural Equation Modelling that applied the Full Imputation Maximum Likelihood estimator. A total of 422 social and health care educators participated in the study. The empirical model of social and health care educators including eight competence areas: leadership and management, collaboration and societal, evidence‐based practice, subject and curriculum, mentoring students in professional competence development, student‐centred pedagogy, digital collaborative learning, and cultural and linguistic diversity. All of the connections between concepts of the empirical model were found to be statistically significant. There were strong connections between most of the identified competence concepts; however, two weak connections were found, namely, the link between competence in evidence‐based practice and competence in subject and curriculum, along with the link between competence in digital collaborative learning and competence in student‐centred pedagogy. The presented empirical model can help stakeholders identify which areas of social and health care educators' curricula should be further developed. The model is also relevant for improving continuous education, allowing educators to assess their competence levels and evaluating educators' performance at the organisational level. Aim: To test a model of clinical learning that focuses on the role of the ward manager. Background: The ward manager's role in supporting clinical learning indirectly focuses on the ward climate connected to students' clinical placements. In this way, the ward manager influences both nursing care and the pedagogical atmosphere in the ward. Design Cross‐sectional, secondary analysis. Methods: The sample included nursing and midwifery students (N = 5,776, n = 1,900) who had completed their clinical placement. Data were collected with the Clinical Learning Environment, Supervision and Nurse Teacher scale. Structural equation modelling was adopted to test the hypotheses. Results: Estimates of the model parameters demonstrated that a ward manager's leadership style influences both the premises of nursing at the ward (0.84, p <.001) and the pedagogical atmosphere (0.93, p <.001), although the pedagogical atmosphere affects the mentoring relationship (0.87–0.86, p <.001). Conclusions: Ward managers exert a significant influence on the clinical learning environment via their support for an effective pedagogical atmosphere and, consequently, effective mentoring. Implications for Nursing Management: Leadership style guides both the premises of nursing at the ward and pedagogical atmosphere. These findings recommend that ward managers should be involved in promoting a supportive learning climate, which supports the mentor–student relationship and, eventually, leads to effective clinical learning. Objectives: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the effectiveness of educational interventions in digital collaborative learning implemented in nursing education. Design: A systematic literature review of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) was carried out in accordance with Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) and Centre for Reviews and Dissemination guidelines and the PRISMA statement. Data sources: CINAHL (EBSCO), ERIC, MEDLINE (Ovid) and Scopus databases were used to identify original peer‐reviewed RCT studies published between 2003 and 2018. Review method: The 'hits' were systematically screened by title, abstract and full text by two authors acting independently. The quality of the selected original studies was evaluated using the quality assessment criteria of the JBI and Cochrane collaboration's tool for assessing risk of bias in randomised trials. The studies were analysed by narrative synthesis. Results: Five peer‐reviewed RCT studies were included in the review. All participants in these studies (647 in total) were nursing students exposed to educational interventions in various nursing programme courses. The reviewed studies indicated that digital collaborative learning increased students' knowledge and nursing skills. The results show that collaborative learning in digital learning environments enhanced nursing students' interaction and collaborative skills, problem‐solving skills, satisfaction and motivation for learning. Conclusion: Collaborative learning in digital learning environments has encouraging effects in enhancing nursing students' knowledge, competence, satisfaction and problem‐solving skills. Moreover, evidence‐based digital collaborative learning is becoming increasingly effective in nursing education, as available tools and teachers' abilities to use them are improving and providing new learning activities to boost students' learning outcomes in higher education. Hybrid teaching, synchronous face-to-face and online learning will continue to be part of flexible teaching methods. This mixed method study aimed to measure the effects of an educational intervention on the development of health sciences and medical educators’ (n = 16) hybrid teaching competence combining experiences about motivation. Hybrid teaching competence was measured with a self-assessment Hybrid Education Competence instrument from one Finnish university in 2022. Pre and post measures about hybrid teaching competence (n = 16) and semi-structured interviews (n = 5) about learning motivation were conducted. Wilcoxon’s signed rank test and inductive content data analysis were used. The educators showed a statistically significant increase in their competence in planning and resourcing hybrid teaching, technological, interaction, digital pedagogy, and ethical competence. Educators experienced the challenges of supporting motivation were less prominent in the second interview than in the first.
