Abstract

The eXTP mission is a major project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), with a large involvement of Europe. Its scientific payload includes four instruments: SFA, PFA, LAD and WFM. They offer an unprecedented simultaneous wide-band Xray timing and polarimetry sensitivity. A large European consortium is contributing to the eXTP study, both for the science and the instrumentation. Europe is expected to provide two of the four instruments: LAD and WFM; the LAD is led by Italy and the WFM by Spain. The WFM for eXTP is based on the design originally proposed for the LOFT ESA M3 mission, that underwent a Phase A feasibility study. It will be a wide field of view X-ray monitor instrument working in the 2-50 keV energy range, achieved with large-area Silicon Drift Detectors (SDDs), similar to the ones used for the LAD but with better spatial resolution. The WFM will consist of 3 pairs of coded mask cameras with a total combined field of view (FoV) of 90x180 degrees at zero response and a source localisation accuracy of ~1 arc min. The main goal of the WFM is to provide triggers for the target of opportunity observations of the SFA, PFA and LAD, in order to perform the core science programme, dedicated to the study of matter under extreme conditions of density, gravity and magnetism. In addition, the unprecedented combination of large field of view and imaging capability, down to 2 keV, of the WFM will allow eXTP to make important discoveries of the variable and transient X-ray sky, and provide X-ray coverage of a broad range of astrophysical objects covered under 'observatory science', such as gamma-ray bursts, fast radio bursts, gravitational wave electromagnetic counterparts. Abstract

The Wide Field Monitor (WFM) is one of the three instruments on the Spectroscopic Time-Resolving Observatory for Broadband Energy X-rays (STROBE-X) mission, which was proposed in response to the NASA 2023 call for a probe class mission. The WFM is a coded-mask camera system that would be the most scientifically capable wide-angle monitor ever flown. The field of view covers one third of the sky, to 50 percent mask coding, and the energy sensitivity is 2 to 50 keV. The WFM is designed to identify new X-ray transients and to capture spectral and timing changes in known sources with data of unprecedented quality. Science applications cover diverse classes, in including X-ray bursts that coincide with gravitational wave detections, gamma ray bursts and their transition from prompt emission to afterglow, subluminous GRBs that may signal shock breakout in supernovae, state transitions in accreting compact objects and their jets, bright flares in fast X-ray transients, accretion onset in transitional pulsars, and coronal flares from many types of active stars., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in JATIS

Abstract

The way pulsars spin down is not understood in detail, but a number of possible physical mechanisms produce a spin-down rate that scales as a power of the rotation rate ($\dot\nu\propto-\nu^n$), with the power-law index $n$ called the braking index. PSR B0540-69 is a pulsar that in 2011, after 16 years of spinning down with a constant braking index of 2.1, experienced a giant spin-down change and a reduction of its braking index to nearly zero. Here, we show that following this episode the braking index monotonically increased during a period of at least four years and stabilised at ~1.1. We also present an alternative interpretation of a more modest rotational irregularity that occurred in 2023, which was modelled as an anomalous negative step of the rotation rate. Our analysis shows that the 2023 observations can be equally well described as a transient swing of the spin-down rate (lasting ~65 days), and the Bayesian evidence indicates that this model is strongly preferred., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication by ApJL

4. A NICER View on the 2020 Magnetar-Like Outburst of PSR J1846-0258

Abstract

We report on our monitoring of the strong-field magnetar-like pulsar PSR J1846-0258 with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) and the timing and spectral evolution during its outburst in August 2020. Phase-coherent timing solutions were maintained from March 2017 through November 2021, including a coherent solution throughout the outburst. We detected a large spin-up glitch of magnitude \Delta\nu/\nu = 3 X 10^{-6} at the start of the outburst and observed an increase in pulsed flux that reached a factor of more than 10 times the quiescent level, a behavior similar to that of the 2006 outburst. Our monitoring observations in June and July 2020 indicate that the flux was rising prior to the SWIFT announcement of the outburst on August 1, 2020. We also observed several sharp rises in the pulsed flux following the outburst and the flux reached quiescent level by November 2020. The pulse profile was observed to change shape during the outburst, returning to the pre-outburst shape by 2021. Spectral analysis of the pulsed emission of NICER data shows that the flux increases result entirely from a new black body component that gradually fades away while the power-law remains nearly constant at its quiescent level throughout the outburst. Joint spectral analysis of NICER and simultaneous NuSTAR data confirms this picture. Abstract

We studied the broadband X-ray timing and spectral behaviors of the newly confirmed accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar MAXI J1816$-$195 during its 2022 outburst. We used the data from Insight-HXMT ME/HE, NICER and NuSTAR which cover the energy range between 0.8$-$210 keV. A coherent timing analysis of solely Insight-HXMT HE data across the full outburst revealed a complex behavior of the timing residuals, also prominently visible in independent Insight-HXMT ME and NICER data, particularly at rising part of the outburst and at the very end in NICER data. Therefore, we broke down the full outburst into a (noisy) rising part, covering only about five days from MJD 59737.0 to 59741.9, and a decaying part lasting for 19 days across MJD 59741.9$-$59760.6. Fitting for the decaying part a timing model including a frequency $\nu$ and frequency time derivative $\dot{\nu}$ component yielded a value of $(+9.0\pm2.1)\times10^{-14}~{\rm Hz~s^{-1}}$ for $\dot{\nu}$, which could be interpreted as a spin-up under our model assumptions. We detected the X-ray pulsations up to $\sim$95 keV in a combination of Insight-HXMT HE observations. The pulse profiles were quite stable over the whole outburst and could be well described by a truncated Fourier series using two harmonics, the fundamental and the first overtone. Both components kept alignment in the range 0.8$-$64 keV. The joint and time-averaged NICER and Insight-HXMT spectra in the energy range 1$-$150 keV were well fitted by the absorbed Comptonization model compps plus disk blackbody with two additional Gaussian components. Using the bolometric flux and spin-up values both evaluated during the decay phase, we determined a magnetic field strength of $(0.2-2)\times10^8$ G for MAXI J1816$-$195., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, accepted version

Abstract

Measuring a pulsar's rotational evolution is crucial to understanding the nature of the pulsar. Here we provide updated timing models for the rotational evolution of six pulsars, five of which are rotation phase-connected using primarily NICER X-ray data. For the newly-discovered fast energetic young pulsar, PSR J0058-7218, we increase the baseline of its timing model from 1.4 days to 8 months and not only measure more precisely its spin-down rate nudot = (-6.2324+/-0.0001)x10^-11 Hz s^-1 but also for the first time the second time derivative of spin rate nuddot = (4.2+/-0.2)x10^-21 Hz s^-2. For the fastest and most energetic young pulsar, PSR J0537-6910 (with 16 ms spin period), we detect 4 more glitches, for a total of 15 glitches over 4.5 years of NICER monitoring, and show that its spin-down behavior continues to set this pulsar apart from all others, including a long-term braking index n = -1.234+/-0.009 and interglitch braking indices that asymptote to <~ 7 for long times after a glitch. For PSR J1101-6101, we measure a much more accurate spin-down rate that agrees with a previous value measured without phase-connection. For PSR J1412+7922 (also known as Calvera), we extend the baseline of its timing model from our previous 1-year model to 4.4 years, and for PSR J1849-0001, we extend the baseline from 1.5 years to 4.7 years. Abstract

High ionisation lines in the soft X-ray band are generally associated to either interstellar hot gas along the line of sight or to photoionised gas intrinsic to the source. In the low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1820-30, the nature of these lines is not well understood. We characterised the ionised gas present along the line of sight towards the source producing the X-ray absorption lines of Mg XI, Ne IX, Fe XVII, O VII, and O VIII. We analysed all the observations available for this source in the XMM-Newton and Chandra archives, taken with the RGS, HETG, and LETG spectrometers. The high-resolution grating spectra have been accurately examined through a standard X-ray analysis based on the $C$-statistic and through the Bayesian parameter inference. We tested two physical models which describe a plasma in either collisional ionisation or photoionisation equilibrium. We adopted the Bayesian model comparison to statistically compare the different combinations of the models used for the analysis.} We found that the lines are consistent with hot gas in the interstellar medium rather than being associated with the intrinsic gas of the X-ray binary. Our best-fit model reveals the presence of a collisionally ionised plasma with a temperature of $T=(1.98\pm0.05)\times10^6 $ K. The photoionisation model fails to fit the Fe XVII line (which is detected with a significance of $6.5\sigma$) due to the low column density predicted by the model. Abstract

The Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) mission is the first focusing X-ray telescope in the hard X-ray (3-79 keV) band. Among the phenomena that can be studied in this energy band, some require high time resolution and stability: rotation-powered and accreting millisecond pulsars, fast variability from black holes and neutron stars, X-ray bursts, and more. Moreover, a good alignment of the timestamps of X-ray photons to UTC is key for multi-instrument studies of fast astrophysical processes. In this Paper, we describe the timing calibration of the NuSTAR mission. In particular, we present a method to correct the temperature-dependent frequency response of the on-board temperature-compensated crystal oscillator. Together with measurements of the spacecraft clock offsets obtained during downlinks passes, this allows a precise characterization of the behavior of the oscillator. The calibrated NuSTAR event timestamps for a typical observation are shown to be accurate to a precision of ~65 microsec., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures. Comments welcome

Abstract

In this White Paper we present the potential of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for studies related to Observatory Science targets. These include flaring stars, supernova remnants, accreting white dwarfs, low and high mass X-ray binaries, radio quiet and radio loud active galactic nuclei, tidal disruption events, and gamma-ray bursts. eXTP will be excellently suited to study one common aspect of these objects: their often transient nature. Abstract

The accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar (AMXP) SAX J1808.4-3658, shows a peculiar orbital evolution that proceeds at a much faster pace than predicted by conservative binary evolution models. It is important to identify the underlying mechanism responsible for this behavior because it can help to understand how this system evolves. It has also been suggested that, when in quiescence, SAX J1808.4-3658 turns on as a radio pulsar, a circumstance that might provide a link between AMXPs and black-widow radio pulsars. In this work we report the results of a deep radio pulsation search at 2 GHz using the Green Bank Telescope in August 2014 and an X-ray monitoring of the 2015 outburst with Chandra, Swift, and INTEGRAL. In particular, we present the X-ray timing analysis of a 30-ks Chandra observation executed during the 2015 outburst. We detect no radio pulsations, and place the strongest limit to date on the pulsed radio flux density of any AMXP. We also find that the orbit of SAX J1808.4-3658 continues evolving at a fast pace and we compare it to the bhevior of other accreting and non-accreting binaries. We discuss two scenarios: either the neutron star has a large moment of inertia (I>1.7x10^45 g cm^2) and is ablating the donor (by using its spin-down power) thus generating mass-loss with an efficiency of 40% or the donor star is undergoing quasi-cyclic variations due to a varying mass-quadrupole induced by either a strong (1 kG) field or by some unidentified mechanism probably linked to irradiation., Comment: Submitted to ApJ

While the radio emission site for young pulsars is well constrained to occur at altitudes about several percent of the light-cylinder radius and γ-ray emission is believed to be produced in the striped wind, outside the light cylinder, the non-thermal X-ray production site remains unknown. Aims. The aim of this Letter is to localize the non-thermal X-ray emission region based on a multi-wavelength pulse profile fitting for PSR J2229+6114, which stands as a particularly good candidate given its high X-ray brightness. Methods. Based on the geometry deduced from the joint radio and γ-ray pulse profiles, we fixed the magnetic axis inclination angle and the line-of-sight (LoS) inclination angle. However, we left the region of X-ray emission unlocalized, setting it somewhere between the surface and the light cylinder. We localized this region and its extension by fitting the X-ray pulse profile as observed by the NICER, NuSTAR, and RXTE telescopes in the ranges of 2–7 keV, 3–10 keV, and 9.4–22.4 keV, respectively. Results. We constrained the non-thermal X-ray emission to arise from altitudes between 0.2 rL and 0.55 rL where rL is the light-cylinder radius. The magnetic obliquity is approximately α ≈ 45° −50° and the LoS inclination angle is ζ ≈ 32° −48°. Conclusions. This Letter is among the first works to offer a tight constraint on the location of non-thermal X-ray emission from pulsars. Abstract

The hard X-ray detector (HXD) on board the X-ray satellite Suzaku is designed to have a good timing capability with a 61 $\mu$s time resolution. In addition to detailed descriptions of the HXD timing system, results of in-orbit timing calibration and performance of the HXD are summarized. The relative accuracy of time measurements of the HXD event was confirmed to have an accuracy of $1.9\times 10^{-9}$ s s$^{-1}$ per day, and the absolute timing was confirmed to be accurate to 360 $\mu$s or better. Abstract

Pulsar braking indices offer insight into the physics that underlies pulsar spin-down. Only five braking indices have been measured via phase-coherent timing; all measured values are less than 3, the value expected from magnetic dipole radiation. Here we present new measurements for three of the five pulsar braking indices, obtained with phase-coherent timing for PSRs J1846-0258 (n=2.65+/-0.01), B1509-58 (n=2.839+/-0.001) and B0540-69 (n=2.140+/-0.009). 17. Supernova remnant energetics and magnetars: no evidence in favour of millisecond proto-neutron stars

Abstract

It is generally accepted that Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXPs) and Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters (SGRs) are magnetars, i.e. neutron stars with extremely high surface magnetic fields ($B > 10^{14}$ G). The origin of these high magnetic fields is uncertain, but a popular hypothesis is that magnetars are born with an initial spin period not much exceeding the convective overturn time (~3ms), which results in a powerful dynamo action, amplifying the seed magnetic field to $> ~10^{15}$ G. Part of this rotation energy is then expected to power the supernova through rapid magnetic braking. It is therefore possible that magnetars creation is accompanied by supernovae that are an order of magnitude more energetic than normal supernovae, provided their initial spin period is ~1 ms. However, we list here evidence that the explosion energies of these supernova remnants associated with AXPs and SGRs -- Kes 73 (AXP 1E 1841-045), CTB 109 (AXP 1E2259+586) and N49 (SGR 0526-66) -- are close to the canonical supernova explosion energy of $10^{51}$~erg, suggesting an initial spin period of > ~5ms. We therefore do not find evidence that magnetars are formed from rapidly rotating proto-neutron stars, allowing for the possibility that they descend from stellar progenitor with high magnetic field cores, and we discuss the merits of both formation scenarios. 18. A Braking Index for the Young, High-Magnetic-Field, Rotation-Powered Pulsar in Kes 75

Abstract

We present the first phase-coherent measurement of a braking index for the young, energetic rotation-powered pulsar PSR J1846-0258. This 324 ms pulsar is located at the center of the supernova remnant Kes 75 and has a characteristic age of tau_c = 723 years, a spin-down energy of 8.3x10^{36}erg/s, and inferred magnetic field of 4.9x10^{13} G. Two independent phase-coherent timing solutions are derived which together span 5.5 yr of data obtained with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. In addition, a partially phase-coherent timing analysis confirms the fully phase-coherent result. The measured value of the braking index, n=2.65+/-0.01, is significantly less than 3, the value expected from magnetic dipole radiation, implying another physical process must contribute to the pulsar's rotational evolution. Assuming the braking index has been constant since birth, we place an upper limit on the spin-down age of J1846-0258 of 884 yr, the smallest age estimate of any rotation-powered pulsar., Comment: Includes major changes to analysis. 19. PSR B1929+10 revisited in X-ray

Abstract

We performed timing and spectral analysis for PSR B1929+10, one of the oldest (about 10^7 years) of the ordinary pulsars detected in X-rays, using archival ROSAT, ASCA and RXTE data. Pulsed emission was detected at a more than five sigma level for combined ROSAT PSPC and unpublished HRI data. Our pulse profile is in agreement with that obtained by Yancopoulos et al. (1994; ROSAT PSPC) but now with better statistics. An investigation of the behaviour of the pulsed signal as a function of energy, based on PSPC data, provides indications that the pulsed fraction is changing with energy. The most important new result from this work is derived from the spectral analysis=2E We found that the combined ROSAT PSPC and ASCA GIS spectrum can satisfactorily be described by a power-law as well as by a double black-body model but not by a single black-body model, as was presented earlier by Yancopoulos et al. (1994; ROSAT) and Wang et al. (1997; ASCA). Fitting the combined ROSAT/ASCA 0.1 - 10 keV spectrum by a power-law model we obtain a photon index of 2.54 +/- 0.12 and a neutral Hydrogen column density N_H towards the source of 9.8_{-1.0}^{+1.4} x 10^20 cm^-2. For a double black-body fit our results are: T_1 = 2.0_{-0.05}^{+0.05} x 10^6 K, T_2 = 6.9_{-0.35}^{+0.23} x 10^6 K, and N_H = 4.43_{-1.12}^{+2.08} x 10^20 cm^-2. In both cases the derived N_H value is higher than that adopted in earlier works, but our result is consistent with the larger distance estimate of 331 +/- 10 pc from new parallax measurements performed by Brisken et al. (2002) and with the Hydrogen distribution measured in the direction of the pulsar (Frisch & York, 1983). 20. Very low luminosities from the accretion-driven millisecond X-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658 during quiescence

We have observed the millisecond X-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658 on three occasions during its 2000 outburst with the BeppoSAX satellite. The source was highly variable and erratic during this outburst, and by coincidence we obtained data only during times when the source had very low luminosities. During our observations, we detected four faint sources. The source closest to the position of SAX J1808.4-3658 is still ~1.6' away. This source can only be identified with SAX J1808.4-3658 if we assume that the BeppoSAX positional reconstruction is not completely understood. We also reanalyzed a BeppoSAX observation taken in March 1999 when the source was in quiescence and during which the source was thought to have been detected (Stella et al. 2000). Based on the similarities (position and luminosity) of this source with the above mentioned source ~1.6' away from SAX J1808.4-3658, it is possible that they are the same source. If this source is not the millisecond pulsar, then during all BeppoSAX observations of SAX J1808.4-3658 (the 2000 outburst ones and the 1999 quiescent one), the millisecond pulsar was not detected. A reanalysis of the ASCA quiescent data of SAX J1808.4-3658 (Dotani, Asai, & Wijnands 2000) confirms that during this observation the source was securely detected in quiescence. The COMPTEL instrument on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory is used to measure the locations of gamma-ray bursts through direct imaging of MeV photons. In a comprehensive search, we have detected and localized 29 bursts observed between 1991 April 19 and 1995 May 31. The average location accuracy of these events is 1.25$\arcdeg$ (1$\sigma$), including a systematic error of $\sim0.5\arcdeg$, which is verified through comparison with Interplanetary Network (IPN) timing annuli. The combination of COMPTEL and IPN measurements results in locations for 26 of the bursts with an average ``error box'' area of only $\sim$0.3 deg$^2$ (1$\sigma$). We find that the angular distribution of COMPTEL burst locations is consistent with large-scale isotropy and that there is no statistically significant evidence of small-angle auto-correlations. We conclude that there is no compelling evidence for burst repetition since no more than two of the events (or $\sim$7% of the 29 bursts) could possibly have come from the same source. We also find that there is no significant correlation between the burst locations and either Abell clusters of galaxies or radio-quiet quasars. Thanks to its very large collecting area, good spectral resolution and unprecedented polarimetry capabilities, eXTP will explore the properties of matter and the propagation of light in the most extreme conditions found in the Universe. eXTP will, in addition, be a powerful X-ray observatory. The mission will continuously monitor the X-ray sky, and will enable multiwavelength and multi-messenger studies. Abstract

The enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission (eXTP) is a flagship observatory for X-ray timing, spectroscopy and polarimetry developed by an International Consortium. Thanks to its very large collecting area, good spectral resolution and unprecedented polarimetry capabilities, eXTP will explore the properties of matter and the propagation of light in the most extreme conditions found in the Universe. eXTP will, in addition, be a powerful X-ray observatory. The mission will continuously monitor the X-ray sky, and will enable multiwavelength and multi-messenger studies. The mission is currently in phase B, which will be completed in the middle of 2022.

Abstract

The eXTP (enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry) mission is a major project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), with a large involvement of Europe. The scientific payload of eXTP includes four instruments: the SFA (Spectroscopy Focusing Array) and the PFA (Polarimetry Focusing Array) - led by China - the LAD (Large Area Detector) and the WFM (Wide Field Monitor) - led by Europe (Italy and Spain). They offer a unique simultaneous wide-band X-ray timing and polarimetry sensitivity. The WFM is a wide field X-ray monitor instrument in the 2-50 keV energy range, consisting of an array of six coded mask cameras with a field of view of 180ºx90ºat an angular resolution of 5 arcmin and 4 silicon drift detectors in each camera. Its unprecedented combination of large field of view and imaging down to 2 keV will allow eXTP to make important discoveries of the variable and transient X-ray sky and is essential in detecting transient black holes, that are part of the primary science goals of eXTP, so that they can be promptly followed up with other instruments on eXTP and elsewhere.

These include flaring stars, supernova remnants, accreting white dwarfs, low and high mass X-ray binaries, radio quiet and radio loud active galactic nuclei, tidal disruption events, and gamma-ray bursts. eXTP will be excellently suited to study one common aspect of these objects: their often transient nature. Abstract

In this White Paper we present the potential of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for studies related to Observatory Science targets. These include flaring stars, supernova remnants, accreting white dwarfs, low and high mass X-ray binaries, radio quiet and radio loud active galactic nuclei, tidal disruption events, and gamma-ray bursts. eXTP will be excellently suited to study one common aspect of these objects: their often transient nature. Developed by an international Consortium led by the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Science, the eXTP mission is expected to be launched in the mid 2020s.

Abstract

The COMPTEL instrument on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory is used to measure the locations of gamma-ray bursts through direct imaging of MeV photons. In a comprehensive search, we have detected and localized 29 bursts observed between 1991 April 19 and 1995 May 31. The average location accuracy of these events is 1.25 deg (1 sigma), including a systematic error of approx. 0.5 deg, which is verified through comparison with Interplanetary Network (IPN) timing annuli. The combination of COMPTEL and IPN measurements results in locations for 26 of the bursts with an average "error box" area of only approx. 0.3 deg (1 sigma). We find that the angular distribution of COMPTEL burst locations is consistent with large-scale isotropy and that there is no statistically significant evidence of small-angle autocorrelations. We conclude that there is no compelling evidence for burst repetition since no more than two of the events (or approx. 7% of the 29 bursts) could possibly have come from the same source. We also find that there is no significant correlation between the burst locations and either Abell clusters of galaxies or radio-quiet quasars. Agreement between individual COMPTEL locations and IPN annuli places a lower limit of approx. 100 AU (95% confidence) on the distance to the stronger bursts.

Abstract

The hard X-ray detector (HXD) aboard the X-ray satellite Suzaku is designed to have a good timing capability with a 61 its time resolution. In addition to detailed descriptions of the HXD timing system, results of in-orbit timing calibration and the performance of the HXD are summarized. The relative accuracy of time measurements of the HXD event was confirmed to have an accuracy of 1.9 x 10(-9) s s(-1) per day, and the absolute timing was confirmed to be accurate to 360 mu s or better. The results were achieved mainly through observations of the Crab pulsar, including simultaneous ones with RXTE, INTEGRAL, and Swift.
