5. Teacher Self-Disclosure and Advocacy, Compared to Neutrality, Their Effect on Learning, with Special Reference to Religious Studies.

Abstract

A teacher must confront the issue of whether or not he should disclose his beliefs, and if so, to what extent. Disclosure can easily become advocacy. A review of the literature reveals that self-disclosure quickens learning, but the literature is divided on whether a religion teacher in tax-supported schools should advocate personal teacher self-disclosure and advocacy on their learning, a questionnaire was developed and administered to four Interpersonal Communication classes and one English class. The survey of 87 Fresno City College (California) students showed overwhelmingly that they saw their most effective teachers as being self-disclosing; that they preferred teachers to self-disclosure and, to a lesser extent, advocate a position. An analysis of the responses by age groups revealed that while both students under 25 and students 25 and over favored teacher self-disclosure and advocacy, the older group did so more strongly. The evidence of this study supports teacher self-disclosure in the classroom, even in religious studies, for both philosophical and educational reasons. Abstract

EFSA’s remit in the risk assessment of GMOs is very broad encompassing genetically modified plants, microorganisms and animals and assessing their safety for humans, animals and the environment. The legal frame for GMOs is set by Directive 2001/18/EC on their release into the environment, and Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 on GM food and feed. The main focus of EFSA’s GMO Panel and GMO Unit lies in the evaluation of the scientific risk assessment of new applications for market authorisation of GMOs, and in the development of corresponding guidelines for the applicants. The EFSA GMO Panel has elaborated comprehensive guidance documents on GM plants, GM microorganisms and GM animals, as well as on specific aspects of risk assessment such as the selection of comparators. EFSA also provides special scientific advice upon request of the European Commission; examples are post-market environmental monitoring of GMOs, and consideration of potential risks of new plant breeding techniques. The GMO Panel regularly reviews its guidance documents in the light of experience gained with the evaluation of applications, technological progress in breeding technologies and scientific developments in the diverse areas of risk assessment.

43. Molecular characterization of the porcine DNAL4 gene

Abstract

The DNAL4 (dynein, axonemal, light polypeptide 4) gene encodes a light chain of dynein. Dyneins are motor proteins that contribute to axonal transport. Cloning and characterization of the porcine DNAL4 revealed a conserved organization with respect to the human ortholog. The porcine DNAL4 gene consists of 4 exons and codes for a peptide of 105 amino acids. The porcine DNAL4 gene is located on SSC5p15. Analysis of the naturally occurring variation of the DNAL4 gene in pigs from the Piétrain und Duroc breeds revealed five SNPs in non-coding regions of the gene.

Abstract

Tyrosine kinase 2 (TYK2) is a member of the janus kinase gene family and encodes an 1187 amino acid protein. All four members of the janus kinase family JAK1, JAK2, JAK3, and TYK2 associate with various cytokine receptors and mediate the signal transduction by tyrosine phosphorylation of downstream targets (YAMOAKA et al., 2004). Studies with tyk2 deficient mice demonstrated impairment of interferon α/β signaling (KARAGHIOSOFF et al., 2003). Mutations in the murine tyk2 gene are associated with increased susceptibility to infectious and autoimmune diseases (SHAW et al., 2003). The human TYK2 gene consists of 25 exons spanning 30,003 bp on human chromosome 19p13.2 starting at 10,322,209 bp. The objective of this study was to determine the chromosomal location of TYK2 in the horse by FISH and RH mapping.
