The interpretation of electron currents in conjugated polymers is strongly hindered by the occurrence of hysteresis. We investigate the transport of electrons in electron-only devices based on derivatives of poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) for various hole-blocking bottom electrodes as well as purification of the polymer. The use of a variety of hole blocking bottom contacts, as metallic electrodes and n-type doped polymers, did not give any improvement in the observed hysteresis. By purification of the PPV, hysteresis free electron-only currents can be obtained. The deep traps responsible for hysteresis, with a concentration in the 1016 cm-3 range, are not responsible for the trap-limited electron transport as observed in purified PPV. Introduction: The primary purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions and utilization of spinal thrust manipulation (STM) techniques of physical therapists who treat patients with low back pain (LBP) in the State of Minnesota. A secondary purpose was to investigate differences between physical therapists who perform STM and those who do not., Methods: A cross-sectional design was utilized through the completion of an electronic survey. 74 respondents completed the survey. Descriptive measures were recorded as frequencies for categorical data or mean ± standard deviation for continuous data. For between-group comparisons, chi-square analyses were used for categorical items of nominal or ordinal data and t-tests were utilized for continuous data. The alpha level was set at p  < 0.05., Result: 60.2% of respondents reported using STM when treating patients with LBP. 69.9% of respondents utilize a classification system. 76.7% of individuals answered correctly regarding the Minnesota State practice act. Of those who use STM, 81.8% utilize a Clinical Prediction Rule. Respondents who use STM were more likely to have a specialist certification (chi-square = 6.471, p  = 0.011) and to have completed continuing education courses on manual therapy (chi-square = 4.736, p  = 0.030)., Discussion/conclusions: Physical therapists who perform STM are more likely to have a better understanding of their state practice act, be board certified, and have completed continuing education in manual therapy.

Background and Purpose: Local implementation of plan-specific quality assurance (QA) methods for intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) treatment plans may vary because of dissimilarities in procedures, equipment and software. The purpose of this work is detecting possible differences between local QA findings and those of an audit, using the same set of treatment plans., Methods: A pre-defined set of clinical plans was devised and imported in the participating institute's treatment planning system for dose computation. The dose distribution was measured using an ionisation chamber, radiochromic film and an ionisation chamber array. The centres performed their own QA, which was compared to the audit findings. The agreement/disagreement between the audit and the institute QA results were assessed along with the differences between the dose distributions measured by the audit team and computed by the institute., Results: For the majority of the cases the results of the audit were in agreement with the institute QA findings: ionisation chamber: 92%, array: 88%, film: 76% of the total measurements. In only a few of these cases the evaluated measurements failed for both: ionisation chamber: 2%, array: 4%, film: 0% of the total measurements., Conclusion: Using predefined treatment plans, we found that in approximately 80% of the evaluated measurements the results of local QA of IMRT and VMAT plans were in line with the findings of the audit. Electroluminescence (EL) from the charge-transfer state and singlet excitons is observed at low applied voltages from high-performing small-molecule bulk-heterojunction solar cells. Singlet emission from the blends emerges upon altering the processing conditions, such as thermal annealing and processing with a solvent additive, and correlates with improved photovoltaic performance. Conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) are versatile materials used in a range of organic optoelectronic applications. Because of their ionic/electronic nature, characterizing these materials is nontrivial, and their operational mechanism is not fully understood. In this work we use a methodology that combines constant-voltage-driven current-density transient measurements with fast current vs voltage scans to allow decoupling of ionic and electronic phenomena. This technique is applied to diodes prepared with cationic CPEs having different charge-compensating anions. Our results indicate that the operational mechanism of these devices is governed by electrochemical doping of the CPE. On the basis of the notion that the saturated depletion layer for the anions consists of the same π-conjugated backbone material, we discern how the extent and speed of formation of the doped region depend on the anion structure. Apart from addressing fundamental transport questions, this work provides a tool for future characterization of different CPEs and other similar systems.

A novel solution-processable small molecule, namely, benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b]bis(4,4'-dihexyl-4H-silolo[3,2-b]thiophene-2,2'-diyl)bis(6-fluoro-4-(5'-hexyl-[2,2'-bithiophene]-5-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (p-SIDT(FBTTh2)2), was designed and synthesized by utilizing the silaindacenodithiophene (SIDT) framework as the central D(2) donor unit within the D(1)AD(2)AD(1) chromophore configuration. Relative to the widely studied 7,7'-[4,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-4H-silolo[3,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene-2,6-diyl]bis[6-fluoro-4-(5'-hexyl-[2,2'-bithiophene]-5-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole] (p-DTS(FBTTh2)2), which contains the stronger donor fragment dithienosilole (DTS) as D(2), one finds that p-SIDT(FBTTh2)2 exhibits a wider band gap and can be used to fabricate bulk heterojunction solar cells with higher open circuit voltage (0.91 V). Most remarkably, thin films comprising p-SIDT(FBTTh2)2 can achieve exceptional levels of self-organization directly via solution deposition. For example, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy analysis shows that p-SIDT(FBTTh2)2 spin-cast from chlorobenzene organizes into crystalline domains with lattice planes that extend over length scales on the order of hundreds of nanometers. Such features suggest liquid crystalline properties during the evolution of the film. Moreover, grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering analysis shows a strong tendency for the molecules to exist with a strong "face-on" orientation relative to the substrate plane. Similar structural features, albeit of more restricted dimensions, can be observed within p-SIDT(FBTTh2)2:PC71BM bulk heterojunction thin films when the films are processed with 0.4% diiodooctane (DIO) solvent additive. DIO use also increases the solar cell power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) from 1.7% to 6.4%. Of significance from a practical device fabrication perspective is that, for p-SIDT(FBTTh2)2:PC71BM blends, there is a wide range of compositions (from 20:80 to 70:30 p-SIDT(FBTTh2)2:PC71BM) that provide good photovoltaic response, i.e., PCE = 4-6%, indicating a robust tendency to form the necessary continuous phases for charge carrier collection. Light intensity photocurrent measurements, charge selective diode fabrication, and internal quantum efficiency determinations were carried out to obtain insight into the mechanism of device operation. Inclusion of DIO in the casting solution results in films that exhibit much lower photocurrent dependence on voltage and a concomitant increase in fill factor. At the optimum blend ratio, devices show high charge carrier mobilities, while mismatched hole and electron mobilities in blends with high or low donor content result in reduced fill factors and device performance.

Through simple addition of a Lewis acid to a conjugated polymer bearing a Lewis basic heteroatom, the hole transport of the polymer can be effectively p-doped resulting in a two-orders increase in hole mobility. This article reviews the basic physical processes of charge transport and recombination in organic semiconductors. As a workhorse, LEDs based on a single layer of poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) derivatives are used. The hole transport in these PPV derivatives is governed by trap-free space-charge-limited conduction, with the mobility depending on the electric field and charge-carrier density. These dependencies are generally described in the framework of hopping transport in a Gaussian density of states distribution. The electron transport on the other hand is orders of magnitude lower than the hole transport. The reason is that electron transport is hindered by the presence of a universal electron trap, located at 3.6 eV below vacuum with a typical density of ca. 3 × 10¹⁷ cm⁻³. The trapped electrons recombine with free holes via a non-radiative trap-assisted recombination process, which is a competing loss process with respect to the emissive bimolecular Langevin recombination. The trap-assisted recombination in disordered organic semiconductors is governed by the diffusion of the free carrier (hole) towards the trapped carrier (electron), similar to the Langevin recombination of free carriers where both carriers are mobile. As a result, with the charge-carrier mobilities and amount of trapping centers known from charge-transport measurements, the radiative recombination as well as loss processes in disordered organic semiconductors can be fully predicted. Evidently, future work should focus on the identification and removing of electron traps. This will not only eliminate the non-radiative trap-assisted recombination, but, in addition, will shift the recombination zone towards the center of the device, leading to an efficiency improvement of more than a factor of two in single-layer polymer LEDs., (© 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Two new high-performance DPP-containing donor molecules employing a molecular architecture with three DPP chromorphores (tri-DPP) in conjugated backbones are synthesized and characterized. Aim of the investigation was to study the frequency and prognosis of patellar chondropathy in general practice. As far as the frequency was concerned a secondary analysis was done of data from the Nijmegen Continuous Morbidity Registration (4 general practices, 12,000 patients). The prognosis was studied in patients in these practices with at least one episode of patellar chondropathy in the years 1985-1988. The GPs were asked about the diagnostic criteria they used. The registration showed an average of 6 new cases of patellar chondropathy per 1000 patient-years; in 7% of the cases the GPs referred a patient for specialist care. To study the prognosis patients were asked to fill in a questionnaire. Response was 84%, 178 questionnaires were analysed. The female-male ratio of the respondents was 2, 60% were younger than 60 years. In 44% of the cases the complaints subsided within 6 months. Interventions such as X-ray and physiotherapy depended on severity, duration and frequency of the knee complaints.
