Abstract

Chronic allograft nephropathy (CAN) and death with functioning graft due to cardiovascular disease (CVD) are the key determinants for long-term renal allograft survival. Chronic allograft nephropathy and cardiovascular disease are seen as manifestations of a single disease entity with a common pathogenesis including inflammation and accelerated atherogenesis. Therefore we investigated the relation between early post-transplant inflammatory burden and long-term graft survival.

Abstract

We investigated temperature dependent Raman spectra of the one-dimensional spin-ladder compound SrCu2O3. At low temperatures a two-magnon peak is identified at 3160+/-10 cm^(-1) and its temperature dependence analyzed in terms of a thermal expansion model. We find that the two-magnon peak position must include a cyclic ring exchange of J_cycl/J_perp=0.09-0.25 with a coupling constant along the rungs of J_perp approx. 1215 cm^(-1) (1750 K) in order to be consistent with other experiments and theoretical results., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

An unified picture for the Raman response of magnetic excitations in cuprate spin-ladder compounds is obtained by comparing calculated two-triplon Raman line-shapes with those of the prototypical compounds SrCu2O3 (Sr123), Sr14Cu24O41 (Sr14), and La6Ca8Cu24O41 (La6Ca8). The theoretical model for the two-leg ladder contains Heisenberg exchange couplings J_parallel and J_perp plus an additional four-spin interaction J_cyc. Within this model Sr123 and Sr14 can be described by x:=J_parallel/J_perp=1.5, x_cyc:=J_cyc/J_perp=0.2, J_perp^Sr123=1130 cm^-1 and J_perp^Sr14=1080 cm^-1. The couplings found for La6Ca8 are x=1.2, x_cyc=0.2, and J_perp^La6Ca8=1130 cm^-1. The unexpected sharp two-triplon peak in the ladder materials compared to the undoped two-dimensional cuprates can be traced back to the anisotropy of the magnetic exchange in rung and leg direction. With the results obtained for the isotropic ladder we calculate the Raman line-shape of a two-dimensional square lattice using a toy model consisting of a vertical and a horizontal ladder. A direct comparison of these results with Raman experiments for the two-dimensional cuprates R2CuO4 (R=La,Nd), Sr2CuO2Cl2, and YBa2Cu3O(6+delta) yields a good agreement for the dominating two-triplon peak. We conclude that short range quantum fluctuations are dominating the magnetic Raman response in both, ladders and planes. We discuss possible scenarios responsible for the high-energy spectral weight of the Raman line-shape, i.e. phonons, the triple-resonance and multi-particle contributions., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

We measured polarized far-infrared reflectivity and Raman scattering spectra of SrCuO$_2$ single crystals. The frequencies for infrared-active modes were determined using an oscillator-fitting procedure of reflectivity data. The Raman spectra were measured at different temperatures using several laser energies $\omega_L$. In addition to eight of twelve Raman active modes, predicted by factor-group analysis, we observed a complex structure in the Raman spectra for polarization parallel to the {\bf c}-axis, which consists of Raman-allowed A$_g$ symmetry modes, and B$_{1u}$ LO infrared-active (Raman-forbidden) modes of the first and higher order as well as their combinations. The Raman-forbidden modes have a stronger intensity at higher $\omega_L$ than the Raman-allowed ones. In order to explain this resonance effect, we measured the dielectric function and optical reflection spectra of SrCuO$_2$ in the visible range. We show that the Raman-allowed A$_g$ symmetry modes are resonantly enhanced when a laser energy is close to $E_0$, while Raman-forbidden (IR-active) modes resonate strongly for laser line energies close to the electronic transition of higher energy gaps., Comment: to be published in Physica C

Abstract

Due to the relatively large slenderness of plated structures, the proof of adequate buckling resistance is crucial for dimensioning. Plate buckling is a stability problem of a compression-loaded plate and is generally characterized by failure of the structure prior to achieving plastic component resistance. The stability verification of welded plated structures assisted by finite element analysis (FEM) is becoming increasingly prevalent in applied engineering. The rules and examples given in this book might illustrate the correct application of the numerical models and give background information on the FEM-based design of welded plated structures. Aside from technical background information on calculation methods and software requirements, modelling, solution settings, evaluation, and verification as a key part of this manual, benchmark examples and worked examples are given. They not only allow the user to better understand the procedure and the background but can also serve as test examples to prove the validity of their own numerical calculations. We are sure that this manual will contribute to improved knowledge of the application of FEM for the design of plated structures, and thereby enhance the acceptance of FEM design in practice., Postprint (published version)

Abstract

In the framework of the revision of Eurocode 3, Part 1–1, several amendments have been proposed and accepted in order to improve the rules for the resistance to member buckling. For clarification, a flow chart connecting the global analysis (first or second order), the imperfections and the type of verification has been implemented for ease of use. Since the publication of the standard in 2005, many research projects have been conducted across Europe on this topic and their results have contributed to provide appropriate answers to problems identified in practice. Therefore, the revised code provides new design rules for stability. Important works of calibration have been performed in these different projects to derive appropriate values of the partial factor on the resistance side. For example, a new formulation for lateral–torsional buckling has been introduced for the calculation of the reduction factor. The consequence is a reduction of the discrepancy between the results obtained by these new methods and those from experimental or numerical tests. In order to extend the scope of Eurocode 3, Part 1–1, additional methods have been implemented in an annex to cover the stability of members with mono-symmetric cross-section under compression axial force, biaxial bending, with or without torsion. The format of the resistance criteria remains similar to the format of the current interaction formulae so that the designers can easily identify the evolution of the rules. This article presents in a systematic way the new implementations in the formal vote version FprEN 1993-1-1 of the code.

Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate differences in the characteristics and outcomes of intensive care unit (ICU) patients over time. Methods: We reviewed all epidemiological data, including comorbidities, types and severity of organ failure, interventions, lengths of stay and outcome, for patients from the Sepsis Occurrence in Acutely ill Patients (SOAP) study, an observational study conducted in European intensive care units in 2002, and the Intensive Care Over Nations (ICON) audit, a survey of intensive care unit patients conducted in 2012. Results: We compared the 3147 patients from the SOAP study with the 4852 patients from the ICON audit admitted to intensive care units in the same countries as those in the SOAP study. The ICON patients were older (62.5 ± 17.0 vs. 60.6 ± 17.4 years) and had higher severity scores than the SOAP patients. The proportion of patients with sepsis at any time during the intensive care unit stay was slightly higher in the ICON study (31.9 vs. 29.6%, p = 0.03). In multilevel analysis, the adjusted odds of ICU mortality were significantly lower for ICON patients than for SOAP patients, particularly in patients with sepsis [OR 0.45 (0.35–0.59), p < 0.001]. Conclusions: Over the 10-year period between 2002 and 2012, the proportion of patients with sepsis admitted to European ICUs remained relatively stable, but the severity of disease increased. Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate differences in the characteristics and outcomes of intensive care unit (ICU) patients over time. Methods: We reviewed all epidemiological data, including comorbidities, types and severity of organ failure, interventions, lengths of stay and outcome, for patients from the Sepsis Occurrence in Acutely ill Patients (SOAP) study, an observational study conducted in European intensive care units in 2002, and the Intensive Care Over Nations (ICON) audit, a survey of intensive care unit patients conducted in 2012. Results: We compared the 3147 patients from the SOAP study with the 4852 patients from the ICON audit admitted to intensive care units in the same countries as those in the SOAP study. The ICON patients were older (62.5 ± 17.0 vs. 60.6 ± 17.4 years) and had higher severity scores than the SOAP patients. The proportion of patients with sepsis at any time during the intensive care unit stay was slightly higher in the ICON study (31.9 vs. 29.6%, p = 0.03). In multilevel analysis, the adjusted odds of ICU mortality were significantly lower for ICON patients than for SOAP patients, particularly in patients with sepsis [OR 0.45 (0.35–0.59), p < 0.001]. Conclusions: Over the 10-year period between 2002 and 2012, the proportion of patients with sepsis admitted to European ICUs remained relatively stable, but the severity of disease increased. In multilevel analysis, the odds of ICU mortality were lower in our 2012 cohort compared to our 2002 cohort, particularly in patients with sepsis.

This two-part article gives an overview of the developments of the structural member verification in prEN 1993-1-1:2020 “Eurocode 3: Design of steel structures – part 1-1: General rules and rules for buildings”, one of the second generation of Eurocodes. These developments were undertaken by Working Group 1 (WG1) of Subcommittee CEN/TC250/SC3 and by Project Team 1 (SC3.PT1) responsible for drafting the new version of EN 1993- 1-1. In the past, WG1 collected many topics needing improvement, and the systematic review conducted every five years also yielded topics needing further development. Based on this, the current version of EN 1993-1-1 has been developed into a new draft version prEN 1993-1-1:2020 enhancing “ease of use”. The technical content of this new draft was laid down at the end of 2019. Many improvements to design rules have been established with respect to structural analysis, resistance of cross-sections and stability of members. This two-part article focuses on member stability design rules and deals with the basis for the calibration of partial factors, the introduction of more economic design rules for semi-compact sections, methods for structural analysis in relation to the appropriate member stability design rules, new design rules for lateral torsional buckling plus other developments and innovations. This second part of the article is dedicated to illustrating the most relevant changes to member buckling design rules.

These form the necessary background to the changes to member buckling design rules, which are treated more specifically in the second part.
