Background: Medium‐term evaluate the bond strength and tag formation in root dentin using self‐adhesive cements Maxcem Elite (MCE), Relyx U200 (RU2), SeT PP (SPP) and Megalink (MGL) compared to conventional cement Relyx ARC (ARC) for glass fibre post cementation. Materials and methods: One hundred bovine incisors roots were endodontically treated and divided into 5 groups (n = 20) according to the cementation system: MCE, RU2, SPP, MGL and ARC. All cementation systems were evaluated at 24 h (1) and 12 months (2) after post cementation. Specimens from the cervical, middle and apical thirds of the root were submitted to push‐out bond strength test and confocal laser microscopy to verify the dentin penetration. The adhesive failure mode was classified as adhesive, cohesive and mixed. Data were analysed by one‐way ANOVA and Tukey tests (α = 5%). Results: ARC‐1 and ARC‐12 showed the highest bond strength (P < 0.05). ARC showed the greatest tag extension, regardless of the third (P < 0.05). The most frequent failure mode in the 24‐h analysis was cohesive, regardless of the cement used. For the 12‐month analysis, mixed failure was the most frequent. Conclusion: Conventional cement (ARC) showed the highest bond strength and tag extension, regardless of the evaluation period. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial efficacy of irrigating solutions and their combinations against Enterococcus faecalis. STUDY DESIGN: One hundred ten single-rooted human teeth were inoculated with E. faecalis and incubated for 21 days. Teeth were divided according to the irrigant: Group I (GI), 2.5% sodium hypochlorite solution (NaOCl); GII, 2.5% NaOCl + 10% citric acid; GIII, 2.5% NaOCl + apple cider vinegar; GIV, apple cider vinegar; GV, 2% chlorhexidine solution; GVI, 1% peracetic acid; GVII, saline solution. Microbiological samples were taken after root canal preparation and 7 days later. Data were submitted to ANOVA (5%). RESULTS: All solutions promoted reduction of E. faecalis after instrumentation, but bacterial counts were higher in the final sample. GI, GV, and GVI had lower bacterial counts than the other groups. CONCLUSIONS: The irrigating solutions may present activity but do not eradicate E. faecalis in the root canal system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the penetration of 2.5% NaOCl associated with 17.0% EDTA, 1.0% citric acid, and 1.0% peracetic acid into dentin tubules. STUDY DESIGN: The roots of 44 bovine incisors were cross-sectioned and 5-mm-long fragments were produced from their middle thirds. The specimens were instrumented with ProTaper hand files, stained in crystal violet, then sectioned mesiodistally. The buccal fragments were divided into 4 groups (n = 9) and subjected to 2 consecutive 10-minute immersion periods in one of the following acid solutions combined with 2.5% NaOCl: 17.0% EDTA (group 1), 1.0% citric acid (group 2), and 1.0% peracetic acid (group 3). Nine fragments were immersed in 2.5% NaOCl (group 4). The analysis of the penetration of NaOCl solutions into dentin was performed by measuring the depth of crystal violet stain that was bleached using a steromicroscope under x50 magnification. Statistical comparisons were carried out by Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's tests at the 5% significance level. RESULTS: Group 1 showed less penetration into dentin than group 4 (P < .05). No statistically significant differences were observed among groups 2, 3, and 4 (P > .05). This study evaluated the effect of 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (SH) or calcium hypochlorite (CH) submitted to passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) or conventional irrigation (CI) on the incidence of residues and the bond strength of the cementation system to post-space dentin. Distilled water (DW) and 2.5% SH followed by 17% EDTA (SH-ED) were used as negative and positive control groups, respectively. The cervical, middle, and apical thirds of the post space were evaluated. One hundred and twenty bovine incisors were endodontically treated and post-space preparation was performed. The specimens were randomly assigned to six groups, according to the solution and irrigation method: DW-CI, SH-ED-CI-SH, SH-CI, SH-PUI, CH-CI, and CH-PUI. The incidence of residues (n=10) over the dentin was evaluated by scores using SEM images. Other specimens were irrigated as previously described and the post cementation was immediately performed using a conventional dual resin cement and a two-step etch-and-rinse adhesive system. Push-out and failure modes were performed for bonding evaluation. Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn test for incidence of residues data and one-way ANOVA and Tukey tests for bond strength data were used at a significance level of 5%. The protocols that showed a lower incidence of residues were: SH-ED-CI-SH, SH-PUI, and CH-PUI for the cervical third and SHED-CI-SH for the middle third (p<0.05). In the apical third, the protocols were similar to each other (p>0.05). This study evaluated the effect on adhesive layer thickness, bond strength, and adhesive failure pattern of the application of universal adhesive (Scotchbond Universal) using either manual or rotary brush in dentin previously impregnated with bioceramic sealer (Sealer Plus BC) using a manual brush, at 24 h and 1 year. Eighty-eight bovine crowns were divided into four groups (n = 22) according to the intervention: (i) use of bioceramic sealer and adhesive application using manual brush, (ii) use of bioceramic sealer and adhesive application using rotary brush, (iii) use of resin sealer and adhesive application using manual brush, and (iv) use of resin sealer and adhesive application using rotary brush. Subsequently, specimens were restored with a composite resin (Filtek Z-250). Adhesive layer thickness was evaluated using confocal microscopy. Bond strength was assessed using the microtensile bond strength test, and adhesive failure pattern was evaluated under a stereomicroscope. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA/Tukey tests. Specimens where a rotary brush had been used exhibited lower adhesive layer thickness. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the application of universal adhesive in the etch-and-rinse (ER) strategy with a manual brush (MB) or rotary brush (RB) in adhesion to dentin impregnated (WB) or not (NB) with bioceramic sealer, at 24 h and 1 year. Eighty-eight crowns of bovine incisors were divided into four groups (n=22): WB-MB, WB-RB, NB-MB, NB-RB. After the restorative protocol, dentin penetrability was evaluated by confocal microscopy. Bond strength was evaluated by microtensile test. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA/Tukey tests (α=0.05). NB-RB and WB-RB exhibited greater extensions of resin tags in dentin. At 24 h, WB-RB and NB-MB showed the highest and lowest values of bond strength, respectively. At 1 year, WB-MB and WB-RB demonstrated the highest bond strength values. The RB increases the formation of resin tags and residues of bioceramic sealer provides higher bond strength in the ER strategy.

This study evaluated the setting time, pH, calcium ion release, solubility, and chemical structure of four calcium silicate sealers after ultrasonic activation (UA). Five sealers were evaluated: Sealer Plus (SP - control); Sealer Plus BC (SPBC), Bio C Sealers (BCS), Endosequence BC Sealer (EBC), and BioRoot RCS (BR). Ten groups were created based on the use or not of ultrasonic activation: SP; SP/UA; SPBC; SPBC/UA; BCS; BCS/UA; EBC; EBC/UA; BR; and BR/UA. Setting time was performed based on ISO 6876:2012 and ASTM C266-07 specifications. Solubility at 24hs, based on ISO 6876:2012. pH and calcium release were evaluated at 1, 24, 72, and 168hs. Raman spectroscopy was used to evaluate structural changes. Quantitative data were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc test (α=5%). Raman spectroscopy results were qualitatively analyzed. Setting times and solubility of all sealers were not affected by UA (p>0.05). The highest solubility was found for BCS, BCS/UA; and BR, BR/UA (p<0.05). After 24hs, calcium silicate sealers had higher pH than SP and SP/UA (p<0.05). BR and BR/UA had the highest pH at all time points. SP and SP/UA had stable pH at all time points. SP and SP/UA had the lowest calcium release values at all time points (p<0.05). EBC and EBC/UA calcium release significantly differ at 24,72 and 168hs (p<0.05). No chemical changes were observed during Raman spectroscopy. In conclusion, ultrasonic activation affected calcium ion release only for EndoSequence BC Sealer. Ultrasonic activation did not influence the initial and final setting time, solubility, pH, and chemical structure of any investigated sealers.

Background: In this experimental protocol, we evaluated the immediate and delayed repair of the buccal branch of the facial nerve (BBFN) with heterologous fibrin biopolymer (HFB) as a coaptation medium and the use of photobiomodulation (PBM), performing functional and histomorphometric analysis of the BBFN and perioral muscles., Methods: Twenty-eight rats were divided into eight groups using the BBFN bilaterally (the left nerve was used for PBM), namely: G1 - control group, right BBFN (without injury); G2 - control group, left BBFN (without injury + PBM); G3 - Denervated right BBFN (neurotmesis); G4 - Denervated left BBFN (neurotmesis + PBM); G5 - Immediate repair of right BBFN (neurotmesis + HFB); G6 - Immediate repair of left BBFN (neurotmesis + HFB + PBM); G7 - Delayed repair of right BBFN (neurotmesis + HFB); G8 - Delayed repair of left BBFN (neurotmesis + HFB + PBM). Delayed repair occurred after two weeks of denervation. All animals were sacrificed after six weeks postoperatively., Results: In the parameters of the BBFN, we observed inferior results in the groups with delayed repair, in relation to the groups with immediate repair, with a significant difference ( p < 0.05) in the diameter of the nerve fiber, the axon, and the thickness of the myelin sheath of the group with immediate repair with PBM compared to the other experimental groups. In measuring the muscle fiber area, groups G7 (826.4 ± 69.90) and G8 (836.7 ± 96.44) were similar to G5 (882.8 ± 70.51). Context: Seal the dentin of the pulp chamber during endodontic treatment to avoid interfering with the restorative treatment performed afterward., Aims: The aim was to evaluate the effect of three adhesive systems applied in different bonding strategies (etch-and-rinse, self-etch, and universal adhesive) and time-point application (immediately after the cavity access preparation or after endodontic obturation) on the hybrid layer formation and dentinal penetrability., Materials and Methods: Forty-eight sound molars were randomly distributed into six groups ( n = 10) according to the adhesive system used: Forty-eight sound molars were randomly distributed into six groups ( n = 10) according to the adhesive system used and the time-point application: Adper Scotchbond Multi-purpose (AS), Clearfil SE (CF) and Scotchbond Universal (SU) in strategy of immediate endodontic sealing (IES) or delayed endodontic sealing (DES). The specimens were sectioned in the long axis, in a buccal-lingual direction, and the dentinal penetrability of the adhesive systems was evaluated using confocal microscopy images. Aims: The objective of the study was to evaluate two translucent resin composite systems for customizing light-polymerized fiber posts with light-emitting diode (LED) curing units regarding adhesion using conventional cement at 24 h and 6 months., Settings and Design: This was an experimental in vitro study., Methods: Forty roots were prepared and divided into four groups ( n = 10): ZV-Z350 resin and LED Valo; ZR-Z350 resin and LED Radii-Cal; OV-Opallis resin and LED Valo; and OR-Opallis resin and LED Radii-Cal. The fiber post was customized and cemented with conventional resin cement and was photoactivated by two different sources., Statistical Analysis Used: The data were subjected to two-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc tests ( P = 0.05). The data regarding the pattern of adhesive failures were described in terms of the frequency of occurrence in each third of the postspace., Results: Both at 24 h and 6 months, bond strength among groups was similar, regardless of the analyzed postspace 3 rd ( P > 0.05). Aims: This study evaluated the effectiveness of different mechanical protocols using rotary brush (RB), ultrasonic tip, and oscillatory system (OS) associated with 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) in the removal of residues and dentin permeability in the cervical and apical segments of the post space., Settings and Design: Experimental in vitro study., Methods: Forty roots from human first molars were prepared and divided into four groups according to the cleaning protocols: Control (CO), NaOCl 2.5% conventional irrigation with a syringe; RB associated with NaOCl 2.5%; ultrasonic tip (US) associated with NaOCl 2.5%; OS associated with NaOCl 2.5%., Statistical Analysis Used: The persistence of residues was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy and data submitted to Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests, and dentin permeability evaluated by confocal microscopy and date submitted to ANOVA one-way and Tukey's tests ( P = 0.05)., Results: There were no differences in residue cleaning among the CO, RB, US, and OS groups, regardless of the analyzed root segment ( P > 0.05). When comparing groups, dentin permeability in the CO group was significantly lower in the cervical segment ( P < 0.05)., Conclusions: The OS group promoted the highest permeability value in the apical segment. RB, US, and OS are similar in removing residues from the post space. Background: The photo-acceleration of bleaching gels by lights has been extensively researched. However, the induced temperature increase during this process needs to be further evaluated to prevent damage to the dental pulp. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the surface and intrapulpal temperature kinetics of different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (HP) gels photo-accelerated by blue or violet light and infrared laser., Methods: The whitening gels at concentrations of HP35, HP15, and HP6 % were irradiated with blue and violet LED/laser on the surface of a human canine tooth. The surface temperature variation (∆Ts) was evaluated using a pH meter, while the intrapulpal temperature variation (∆Ti) was assessed using a digital thermometer at intervals of 1, 15, and 30 min. Statistical analysis was conducted using a Two-way repeated measures ANOVA test, and Bonferroni post-test was applied at a significance level of 5 %., Results: All violet LED photo-accelerated groups showed a higher increase in ∆Ts compared to the blue LED/laser groups. This study evaluated the effect of different concentrations of alpha-tocopherol in gel form on fracture strength, hybrid layer formation, and microtensile bond strength of endodontically treated teeth bleached with 40% hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ). Sixty bovine incisors were randomized into one of six groups (n = 10 incisors per group) defined by the interventions carried out after endodontic treatment. In the control group, no additional intervention was carried out, while all teeth in the five intervention groups were bleached with 40% H 2 O 2 and subsequently treated with alpha-tocopherol at concentrations of 15% (15AT), 20% (20AT), or 25% (25AT), with 10% sodium ascorbate (10SA), or with nothing (40HP). Fracture strength was evaluated in a mechanical testing machine, hybrid layer formation was assessed using scanning electron microscopy, and bond strength was determined using microtensile bond-strength testing. Data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's tests. No statistically significant difference regarding fracture strength was observed among groups. Hybrid layer formation was greater in the 15AT group than in groups 40HP and 10SA. Teeth in groups 15AT, 20AT, and 25AT demonstrated higher bond strength than teeth in groups 40HP and 10SA. This study evaluated the influence of different translucent resins (Z350 and Opallis) for customizing fiber posts and light-curing the cementation system using different LED equipment (V, Valo or R, Radii-Cal) on the bond strength and adhesive failure pattern at 24 h and 6 months. Eighty roots were prepared and divided into 4 groups (n=20): ZV (Z350 resin and LED Valo), ZR (Z350 resin and LED Radii-Cal), OV (Opallis resin and LED Valo), OR (Opallis resin and LED Radii-Cal). After post space preparation, the fiber post was customized and cemented with self-adhesive cement and light-curing using V or R LED equipment. Bond strength values were submitted to 2-way ANOVA test. ZV and ZR showed higher bond strength values than the other groups at 6 months of evaluation (p<0.05). The Z350 resin has a favorable influence on the bond strength of self-adhesive cement to root dentin, regardless of the LED polymerization equipment used.

The objective of the study was to evaluate the effects of dentin deproteinization protocols for post space using different formulations containing sodium hypochlorite before fiber post cementation with self-adhesive resinous cement. The groups were divided according to the irrigation protocol (DWC, SHS, SHT and SHG). The residue cleanliness, bond strength, adhesive failure pattern, and tag formation at the adhesive interface between the self-adhesive cement and the dentin were evaluated. For this, analysis in scanning electron microscope, push-out test and confocal laser scanning microscopy were performed. The SHT protocol showed the highest residue cleanliness on the dentin surface of the post space (p<0.05). In addition, SHT protocol showed highest bond strength and tag formation in the cervical and middle thirds (p<0.05). Dentin deproteinization with sodium hypochlorite with surfactant provided the best dentin cleaning of residues, bond strength and tag formation after cementation of the fiber post with self-adhesive cement.

Objective: This study evaluated the effects of antioxidants, 10% sodium ascorbate (SA) or 20% alpha-tocopherol (AT), after post-space irrigation with 2.5% sodium hypochlorite +17% EDTA (SH) or 1% peracetic acid (PA) on the adhesive interface after glass fiber post cementation., Materials and Methods: Sixty bovine roots were endodontically treated. After preparation, the post-space was irrigated with SH or PA followed or not by the use of antioxidants (SA or AT) (n = 10). Push-out bond strength test, failure mode, and dentin penetrability analysis using confocal laser microscope were performed in the cervical, middle, and apical thirds. Data from bond strength and dentinal penetrability were evaluated by one-way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc test (p < 0.05)., Results: SH showed the lowest bond strength regardless of the third (p < 0.05). In apical third, mixed failure was the most incident in all groups. Only in the cervical third of the post-space, SH-AT provided the greatest tag extension of the cementation system into dentin (p < 0.05). However, in the middle and apical thirds, SH-AT, SH-SA, and PA-SA provided the largest tag extensions (p < 0.05), but similar to each other (p > 0.05)., Conclusions: The use of antioxidants only favored bond strength when SH was used and dentin penetrability of the adhesive and conventional resin cementation, regardless of the solution used to irrigate the post-space., Clinical Significance: The use of antioxidants (10% sodium ascorbate and 20% alpha-tocopherol) after post-space irrigation with sodium hypochlorite appears to increase the bond strength favoring the glass fiber post-cementation., (© 2023 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Objective: To evaluate in vitro the effect of dental bleaching using high concentration hydrogen peroxide (HP) photoactivated with violet LED on fracture strength and hybrid layer formation., Methods: forty endodontically-treated bovine teeth were randomized into four groups (n = 10): C - Control, HP - 35% hydrogen peroxide, HP-BL - 35% hydrogen peroxide photoactivated with blue LED, HP-VL - 35% hydrogen peroxide photoactivated with violet LED. Three bleaching sessions with an interval of 7 days between them were performed. After 10 days of the last bleaching session, the dental crowns were restored and submitted to the fracture strength test. Five specimens from each group were used to evaluate the hybrid layer formation by scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. One-way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis test were used for parametric and non-parametric data, respectively. Significance level of 5% was adopted to all the tests., Results: No differences on fracture strength among the groups were observed (p > 0.05). HP and HP-BL showed alterations on hybrid layer formation compared to C group (p < 0.05), but not for HP-VL (p > 0.05). No differences on hybrid layer formation were observed among HP, HP-VL and HP-BL groups (p > 0.05)., Conclusion: Dental bleaching, photoactivated or not, did not affect the fracture strength of endodontically-treated teeth. Objective: To evaluate the effect of etch-and-rinse (ER) versus self-etch (SE) strategies of a universal adhesive applied with a manual brush (MB) or rotary brush (RB) on the bonding interface of fiber post cementation., Methods: Forty bovine incisor roots were prepared and divided into four groups according to the methods of application and strategy of universal adhesive use (MB-ER, RB-ER, MB-SE and RB-SE). After 6 months, specimens from different thirds of the post space were evaluated of push-out strength, analysis of adhesive failure patterns, and extent of tags., Results: The RB-ER and RB-SE groups showed the highest bond strength values in the cervical and middle thirds of the post space. Cohesive adhesive failure had the highest incidence in the different thirds of the post space in the ER strategy, regardless of the adhesive application method. The study evaluated the persistence of residues, bond strength and tags formation of a cementation system after post-space irrigation with different sodium hypochlorite-based irrigants. The groups were divided according to the irrigation protocol (DW: distilled water; SHS: sodium hypochlorite solution; SHG: sodium hypochlorite gel; and, SHT: sodium hypochlorite with surfactant). Forty roots (n=10) were used to evaluate the persistence of residues by scanning electron microscopy. Other forty roots were used to the push-out bond strength test, failure mode and tag formation analyses. Non-parametric data were submitted to Kruskal Wallis and Dunn tests, while parametric data were evaluated by one-way ANOVA. No difference was observed in the persistence of residues. DW showed the highest bond strength and tag formation. Type 2 failure mode was the most frequent in the experimental groups. Compared to control, SHT showed the best performance, since less negative effects on adhesive interface was observed.

This study evaluated the antimicrobial efficacy of a new intracanal drug based on Pentaclethra macroloba extract, a plant of Amazonian origin, against Enterococcus faecalis using macrodilution test and intratubular evaluation with Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of the pure extract of Pentaclethra macroloba andits association with calcium hydroxide and ultracall were determined. Then, thirty-three dentin cylinders were prepared and inoculated with E. faecalis, to evaluate the antimicrobial effect of the medications on the dentinal tubules with CLSM. The data was analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests. The extract in association with calcium hydroxide showed a lower CBM, and in the intratubular test all tested medications were effective against E. faecalis (P >0.05). The new intracanal drug based on P. macroloba extract has an antimicrobial effect against E. faecalis and further studies are needed for its clinical use.

This study evaluated the variation of surface and intra-pulpal temperature, during bleaching protocol, using LED/laser. The 35% (HP35), 15% (HP15) and 6% (HP6) gels were used associated with LED/laser applied every 1 min for 30 min in a human canine. The evaluation of surface temperature variation (∆Ts) was performed using a pHmeter and the intra-pulpal temperature variation (∆Ti) was performed using a digital thermometer, at times of 1-, 5-, 10- 15- and 30-min. Statistical analysis was performed using the two-way repeated measures ANOVA test and Bonferroni post-hoc test was used at a significance level of 5%. HP35 and HP15 showed greater temperature variation than HP6 up to 10 min of surface evaluation, showing no differences between them. In the intra-pulpal evaluation, no group showed differences throughout the procedure.

This study evaluated the effects of irrigating solutions containing 5% boric acid + 1% citric acid or 1% peracetic acid + high concentration hydrogen peroxide on root cleaning and bond strength of cementation systems after 24 h and 6 months of glass fiber post cementation. One hundred and twenty roots were endodontically treated. The specimens were randomized into one of four treatments (n = 10): DW (distilled water); NaOCl 2.5% + EDTA 17% (2.5% sodium hypochlorite solution + 17% EDTA); PA 1% + HP (1% peracetic acid solution + high concentration of hydrogen peroxide); BA 5% + CA 1% (5% boric acid associated with 1% citric acid). The cleaning efficacy in the cervical, middle, and apical thirds of the post-space, and the push-out bond strength at 24 h and 6 months after post cementation were evaluated by Kruskal-Wallis and two-way ANOVA tests, respectively. BA 5% + CA 1% showed statistically significantly superior cleaning efficacy compared to the other solutions. This irrigation protocol also resulted in higher bond strength at 24 h and 6 months, regardless of the root third considered, and this was statistically significantly higher than those seen for DW and PA 1% + HP. For BA 5% + CA 1% irrigation protocol, type 1 adhesive failure was the most prevalent. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of antioxidant solutions on fracture strength and bonding performance in non-vital and bleached (38% hydrogen peroxide) teeth. One hundred and eighty dentin specimens were obtained, 60 for each test: fracture strength, hybrid layer thickness, and bond strength. The groups (n=10) were randomly composed according to post-bleaching protocol: REST - restoration, without bleaching; BL - bleaching + restoration; SA - bleaching, 10% sodium ascorbate solution, and restoration; AT - bleaching, 10% α-tocopherol solution, and restoration; CRAN - bleaching, 5% cranberry solution, and restoration; CAP - bleaching, 0.0025% capsaicin solution, and restoration. Data were analyzed with ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis, Dunn, and Qui-Square tests (α=0.05). The highest fracture strength values were observed in REST (1508.96 ±148.15 N), without significant difference for the bleached groups (p>0.05), regardless of the antioxidant use. The hybrid layer thickness in the group that was not subjected to bleaching (REST) was significantly higher than in any other group. The bond strength in the bleached and antioxidants-treated groups (SA, AT, CRAN, CAP) has no differences with the bleached group without antioxidants (BL). Adhesive failures were predominant in the groups that did not receive the antioxidant application. In conclusion, the evaluated antioxidants did not show an effect on the fracture strength, hybrid layer thickness, or bond strength of dentin bleached after endodontic treatment. The application of 10% sodium ascorbate, 10% alpha-tocopherol, 5% cranberry, or 0.0025% capsaicin solutions is not an effective step and should not be considered for the restorative protocols after non-vital bleaching.

This study compared the pH and calcium ion release of calcium silicate- (Bio-C Temp) and calcium hydroxide-based (Ultracal XS) medications. Intracanal remnants of both medications were also evaluated using SEM-EDS after the removal protocol. Thirty-five bovine teeth were prepared. Fifteen were filled with Bio-C Temp and 15 with Ultracal XS. Five remained without intracanal medication (control group). Five samples from each experimental time (i.e.. 24, 72, and 168 hours) were used to measure pH and calcium ions release using a digital pH meter and microplate reader, respectively. Afterward, the peaks of the chemical elements composing both medications were analyzed in SEM-EDS. One-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test analyzed the pH and calcium ion release data. Student's t-test compared the medications in each experimental time. SEM-EDS described the percentage of chemical elements in the samples. Bio-C Temp and Ultracal XS showed a significant pH increase from 24 to 168 hours (p<0.05). Ultracal XS showed a higher pH value at 24 hours than Bio-C Temp (p<0.05) but were similar at 72 and 168h (p > 0.05). Calcium ion release did not depend on the experimental period (p > 0.05). Bio-C Temp showed lower calcium ions release than Ultracal XS at 24 hours (p<0.05). SEM-EDS analyses showed the remains of both medications, but the concentration of Si, Al, and W ions was present only in the calcium silicate-based medication. Bio-C Temp presented alkaline pH and a satisfactory calcium ion release over the time. The remaining of both medications were present after the protocols for paste removal.

Background: The use of different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (HP) photoactivated with LED/laser sources is common however, their influence on tooth structure is not yet fully elucidated. This study aimed to evaluate the pH, microhardness and surface roughness of different bleaching protocols photoactivated with LED/laser., Methods: Forty bovine incisors were sectioned (7 × 7 × 2 mm) and randomized into four groups for analysis of pH (n = 5), microhardness and roughness (n = 10): HP35, HP6&#95;L, HP15&#95;L, HP35&#95;L. The pH analysis was performed in the initial and final minute of the bleaching protocol. Microhardness and roughness were evaluated before and 7 days after the last bleaching session. Results were obtained from two-way ANOVA for repeated measures and Bonferroni post-test at a significance level of 5%., Results: HP6&#95;L showed higher pH and greater stability between the initial and final evaluations, while the other groups showed similar pH with reduced values in the intragroup evaluation. Background: To evaluate the efficacy of dental bleaching protocols using 35% hydrogen peroxide photoactivated with violet LED on color and microhardness of endodontically treated teeth., Methods: Forty specimens were selected and randomized into 4 groups (n = 10): C - Control, HP - 35% hydrogen peroxide, HP + BL - 35% hydrogen peroxide + blue LED, HP + VL - 35% hydrogen peroxide + violet LED. Three bleaching sessions were performed for each group. Color analysis was performed 7 days after each bleaching session. Two-way repeated measure ANOVA and Bonferroni test were used to evaluate the effect of different bleaching protocols and evaluation times on the dependent variables (∆E and ∆L). Dentin microhardness was measured 24 h after the third bleaching session. Data were evaluated by ANOVA and Tukey's test at a significance level of 5%., Results: Differences on ∆E and ∆L were verified after the first and second bleaching sessions (p < 0.05) and showed stability after the third one, for all the groups. No differences were observed among HP, HP + BL, and HP + VL groups, regardless of the evaluation time (p > 0.05). HP and C showed the greatest and smallest reduction in dentin microhardness (p < 0.05), respectively. No difference between HP + BL and HP + VL protocols (P > 0.05) was observed., Conclusions: High concentration hydrogen peroxide (35%) photoactivated with violet LED bleached endodontically treated teeth effectively. Background: Few studies have investigated the effect of violet LED irradiation associated or not with bleaching agents on blood-stained teeth. This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the whitening efficacy and color stability of non-vital dental bleaching using 35% hydrogen peroxide (HP) photoactivated with violet LED (VL) compared to 35% HP alone and 35% HP photoactivated with blue LED (BL)., Methods: Fifty bovine dental crowns were used to obtain specimens of 5 × 5 × 2 mm. After selection based on a previous colorimetric analysis, the specimens were blood-stained and randomly assigned into five groups (n = 10): control (no treatment); 35% HP, 35% HP/BL; 35% HP/VL; and VL. Three bleaching sessions were performed and the colorimetric analysis (∆E ab, ∆L, and ∆WI D ) was recorded after 7 days, 30 days, and 9 months of the last bleaching session. Two-way repeated measures ANOVA followed by Bonferroni post-hoc test was used at a significance level of 5%., Results: 35% HP, 35% HP/BL, and 35% HP/VL showed higher values of ∆E ab, ∆L, e ∆WI D (P < 0.05), without intra- and intergroup differences (P > 0.05). This in vitro study evaluated the effect of an experimental varnish containing 20% nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAP) associated with 5% stannous chloride (SnCl2) against erosive-abrasive wear on bovine dentin. Samples of bovine cervical dentin were pre-eroded (0.3% citric acid, pH 2.6 for 10 minutes) and randomized into 4 groups (n=10): Control group - experimental varnish without active ingredient (CG); experimental varnish containing 20% nHAP (nHG); experimental varnish containing 5% SnCl2 (24.800 ppm Sn2+) (SnG); experimental varnish containing 20% nHAP associated with 5% SnCl2 (18.300 ppm Sn2+) (nHSnG). After applying the materials, the erosive-abrasive challenges were performed for five days. Erosive dentin loss and analysis of the pattern of dentinal obliteration were performed by 3D confocal laser microscopy. A one-way ANOVA/Bonferroni test was performed to analyze the data (α=0.05). The SnG and nHSnG experimental groups presented more effectiveness in preventing erosive wear when compared to the other groups (p<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between the SnG and nHSnG groups (p = 0.731) in tooth structure dentin loss. Regarding the amount of open dentinal tubules, the highest amount of obstructed dentinal tubules was demonstrated in SnG and nHSnG (p < 0.05) when compared to the others. Between SnG and nHSnG there was no significant difference (p = 0.952) in the amount of closed dentinal tubules in the dentin. Experimental varnishes containing 5% SnCl2 associated or not with 20% nHAP showed to be a promising strategy in preventing erosive-abrasive wear of dentin. In addition, nHSnG was able to obliterate dentinal tubules.

Recent formulations of resin-based composites have incorporated different combinations of materials. However, the mechanical and bonding behavior of these materials with intraradicular posts are unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of light-cure and dual-cure resin composite posts on the fracture resistance of endodontically-treated teeth. Materials and Methods: Ninety extracted human upper canines were selected and randomly divided into nine groups (n=10): (G1) endodontically treated teeth without endodontic posts; (G2) glass-fiber post cemented with glass-ionomer cement; (G3) endodontic post by dual-cure composite resin (Rebilda DC); (G4) endodontic post by dual-cure composite resin (Cosmecore); (G5) endodontic post by dual-cure composite resin (Bis-Core); (G6) endodontic post by light-cure composite resin; (G7) glass-fiber post customized with flowable composite resin; (G8) glass-fiber post cemented with light-cure composite resin; (G9) glass-fiber post cemented with self-adhesive resin cement. After the post insertion, all specimens were subjected to mechanical (250,000 cycles) and thermocycling (6000 cycles, 5 °C/55 °C) and immediate loading at 45 degrees in a universal testing machine until fracture. The data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and multiple comparisons using the Fisher LSD Method (p < 0 05). Results: The mean failure loads (±SD) for the groups ranged from 100.7 ± 22.6 N to 221.9 ± 48.9 N. The G1 group (without endodontic posts) had a higher fracture strength than all experimental groups (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Within the limitations, the light- and dual-cure post technique did not present lower fracture resistance values as compared to the conventional glass-fiber post.

This study evaluated the effect of aging and cementation of fiber posts using glass ionomer and resin cements on push-out bond strength, failure mode, and resin tag formation. One hundred and twenty bovine incisors were used. After post-space preparation, the specimens were randomly allocated into 12 groups (n = 10) according to the cementation system used: GC - GC Gold Label Luting & Lining); RL - RelyX Luting 2; MC - MaxCem Elite; RU - RelyX U200 and the aging periods (24 hours, 6 months, and 12 months). Slices from the cervical, middle, and apical thirds were obtained and analyzed by push-out bond strength test and confocal laser scanning microscopy. One-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test was used at a significance level of 5%. For the push-out bond strength test, no differences among GC, RU, and MC in the cervical and middle thirds were observed, regardless of the period of storage (P > 0.05). In the apical third, GC and RU showed similar bond strength but higher than other groups (P > 0.05). After 12 months, GC showed the highest bond strength (P < 0.05). Bond strength to post-space dentin decreased over time, regardless of the cementation system used. Cohesive failure was the most frequent, regardless of the period of storage, cementation system, and post-space third. Tag formation was similar among all groups. After 12 months, GC showed the highest bond strength values.

Objective: To evaluate the cleaning potential of 95% ethanol, acetone, and amyl acetate solutions used solely or in association, to remove epoxy resin-based sealer residues from pulp chamber dentin and their microstructural effects., Materials and Methods: One hundred and eighty bovine incisor specimens were divided into nine groups according to the cleaning protocol: ET (ethanol); AC (acetone); AA (amyl acetate); E1: AA+AC; E2: AA+ET; E3: AC+ET; E4: AA+AC+ET; PC (positive control), and NC (negative control). All groups were impregnated with epoxy resin-sealer, except NC. Ninety specimens were divided into groups (n = 10) for evaluation of persistence of residues and amount of open dentinal tubules by SEM analysis and evaluation of chemical compounds on the dentin surface after cleaning with electron dispersive spectroscopy. The others 90 specimens were submitted to Knoop microhardness evaluation. Persistence of residues data were submitted to the Kruskal Wallis and Dunn tests (α = 0.05). Open dentinal tubules and microhardness data were submitted to one-way ANOVA and Mann Whitney tests (α = 0.05)., Results: AA and E4 protocols showed the lowest persistence of residues. E4 group had the highest incidence of open dentinal tubules. E3 and E4 groups showed no changes in the atomic ratio Ca/P, which was similar to NC group. E4 group did not present W, an element presents in all the other groups. ET and E4 protocols showed the smallest reduction in dentin microhardness., Conclusions: The combination of amyl acetate, acetone and ethanol is the most effective and safe protocol to remove epoxy sealer residues on pulp chamber dentin. Background: This study aimed to evaluate the bleaching efficacy, pH, and temperature of 35% hydrogen peroxide (HP) gel used alone or associated with violet LED., Methods: Sixty bovine crowns were sectioned (5 × 5 × 2mm). After staining with black tea, the specimens were randomized into four groups (n = 10) according to the bleaching protocol: HP35R: 3 × 15 min 35% HP; HP35: 1 × 45 min 35% HP; HP35VR: 3 × 8min 35% HP + Violet LED; HP35V: 1 × 24 min + Violet LED. Two bleaching sessions were performed for all the groups. Color change was evaluated before, 24h after each session, 7 days and 15 days after the last session. The variables ∆E 00 [CIEDE2000] and W ID were used for color analysis. The pH variation (initial and final) and the temperature of the gel were recorded (n = 5). ANOVA two-way for repeated measures and Bonferroni post-test was used at a significance level of 5%., Results: HP35VR and HP35V the most noticeable color change(p < 0.05). The final values of pH were lower than the initial ones, but with no difference between the groups (p > 0.05). Groups HP35VR and HP35V showed an increase in temperature in relation to HP35R (p < 0.05)., Conclusions: Violet LED improved the bleaching efficacy of 35% HP in a time-saving manner without negatively affecting the pH and temperature of 35% HP. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of cleansing protocols to remove sealer residues using different cleaning strategies and the effect of bond strength of two universal adhesives to dentin impregnated with epoxy resin-based sealer., Materials and Methods: Fifty bovine dentin specimens were impregnated with epoxy resin-based sealer containing calcium hydroxide (Sealer Plus) and submitted to cleansing protocols (n = 10): negative control (NC), positive control (PC), 95% ethanol (ET), xylol (XI), and amyl acetate (AA). Specimens were evaluated by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Other 100 specimens were submitted to the same protocols (n = 20). Each protocol was divided into subgroups (n = 10) according to the universal adhesive system used: Scotchbond Universal (SU); Ambar Universal (AU). Bond strength was evaluated by micro-shear bond test (μSBT). Persistence of residues data were assessed with Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's tests. μSBT data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA (α = 5%)., Results: ET presented higher persistence of residues compared to AA and XI (p < 0.05). AA and XI were similar from each other (p > 0.05). AU and SU presented similar μSBT values, regardless of the cleansing solution (p > 0.05). Resin-based composites (RBCs) have transformed restorative dentistry and its procedures. However, the characteristics of RBCs have been modified over the years to enhance the physical and chemical properties of the materials. This context raises the need for studies that evaluate whether the properties of the RBCs that are commercially available are clinically adequate with different curing modes. This study aimed to evaluate the mechanical behavior of commercial RBCs after undergoing different curing modes. Twenty-three RBCs of different classes were evaluated. For curing the specimens, a microwave (BMS45, Brastemp) (for 3 min at 450 W) and three LED units were used: an Emitter A Fit (Schuster (second generation)) (light-curing for 15 s with an irradiance of 1250 mW/cm2), VALO (Ultradent (third generation)) (light-curing for 15 s with an irradiance of 1100 mW/cm2), and Emitter Now Duo (Schuster (second generation)) (light-curing for 15 s with an irradiance of 1100 mW/cm2). A total of 670 RBC specimens of 8 mm in diameter and 1 mm in depth were obtained. Afterward, a biaxial flexure strength test was performed until the failure of the specimens, using a universal testing machine set at a speed of 0.5 mm/min. The same specimens were subjected to infrared spectroscopy for evaluating the degree of conversion. Tukey’s test was used for multiple comparisons at a significance level of 5%. The light-curing mode did not affect the flexure strength of the RBCs (p > 0.05), but the type and shade of RBCs did so (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the type of RBC directly interferes with the mechanical behavior of the material. However, the curing modes within the same RBC did not change the mechanical properties.

Background: Bleaching protocols using low concentration hydrogen peroxide (HP) photoactivated with LED sources have been widely discussed. Herein, we evaluated the whitening efficacy of 15% HP photoactivated with blue or violet LED compared to 35% HP., Methods: Thirty bovine crowns were sectioned into 5 × 5 × 2 mm specimens. After staining in black tea, the specimens were randomized into three groups (n = 10): 35% HP, 15% HP + blue LED and 15% HP + violet LED. Two bleaching sessions were performed and the color assessment (∆L*, ∆a*, ∆b*, ∆E ab [CIELab], ∆E 00 [CIEDE2000] and WI D ) was performed before, 24h after each session, 7 days and 1 month after the last session. Data were evaluated by two-way repeated measures ANOVA and Bonferroni post-test at a significance level of 5%., Results: All groups showed effective and similar results over 1 month of follow-up (p > 0.05), with only intragroup differences among the time intervals (p < 0.05)., Conclusions: The use of 15% HP photoactivated with blue or violet LED showed similar whitening efficacy compared to 35% HP. This study evaluated the effect of irrigation protocols using 95% ethanol (ET) or 1% peracetic acid (PA) prior the use of 2% chlorhexidine (CHX) compared to distilled water (DW) on the chemical smear layer (CSL) formation and incidence of open dentin tubules at the apical, medium, and cervical third of the post-space dentin. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) images were used. Forty bovine roots were endodontically treated. After, post-space preparation was performed and the roots were randomized in four groups (n = 10) according to the irrigation protocol: DW, CHX, CHX-ET and CHX-PA. The chemical composition of CSL and the incidence of open dentin tubules at the post-space thirds were evaluated by EDS (500× magnification) and SEM (2000× magnification) images, respectively. Data from chemical composition of CSL were descriptively analyzed, while the incidence of open dentin tubules was evaluated by scores and submitted to Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn test (p = .05). Cl, Bi, and Si were the chemical elements most found over the dentin after the irrigation with CHX and CHX-ET. Moreover, CHX and CHX-ET showed the highest incidence of CSL (p < .05), but without difference between them (p > .05), regardless of the post-space third. DW and CHX-PA showed similar incidence of CSL (p > .05). No difference on the incidence of open dentin tubules was found for any irrigation protocol and post-space third (p > .05). The use of 1% PA prior the post-space irrigation with CHX decrease the incidence of CSL. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of cleaning protocols on the presence of residues, open dentinal tubules, and bond strength of a self-etch adhesive plus a dual-cure resin cement to dentin in the fiber-post space. The methods for cleaning utilized were conventional irrigation (CI), rotary brush with continuous rotary movement (RB), and continuous ultrasonic irrigation (CUI). Sixty bovine incisors were used for fiber-post space preparation. Thirty roots were divided into three groups (n = 10) according to the cleaning protocols and submitted to scanning electron microscope to evaluate presence of residues and relative quantity of open dentinal tubules on dentin surface. Similar protocols were performed in the other thirty roots (n = 10) using a self-etching adhesive system (Scotchbond Universal) and a dual-cure resin cement (Relyx Unicem 2). After 6 months cervical, middle, and apical thirds sections of fiber-post space were submitted to push-out testing. To data ANOVA and Tukey's test were employed (α = 5%). RB and CUI showed the lowest presence of residues on dentin surface (p = .015) and the highest bond strength values (p < .001), regardless of the dentin third. CUI presented the highest quantity of open dentinal tubules in middle and apical thirds (p < .001). CI presented the lowest bond strength value of resin cement, regardless of dentin third (p < .001). Mechanical cleaning protocols, such as RB and CUI, presented better surface cleaning capabilities and higher bond strength than CI with dual-cure resin cement employed. The use of a mechanical cleaning protocol seems to cause appropriate condition on the root dentin surface. Mechanical cleaning of root dentin provided greater bond strength of the self-etching system with dual resin cement. Conventional irrigation did not provide adequate root dentin cleaning. Background: This study evaluated the color change, enamel surface roughness and microhardness after different tooth bleaching protocols, using hydrogen peroxide (HP) and/or violet LED., Methods: Forty bovine specimens (7 × 7 × 2 mm) were randomly distributed into 4 groups: 35% HP, 6% HP, 6% HP + violet LED and violet LED alone. First, the specimens were stained with black tea and then submitted to two bleaching sessions of 30 min with an interval of 7 days. Color change (∆L*, ∆a*, ∆b* and ∆E 00 ) after 24 h of each session and 1 week after the last session was evaluated. Enamel roughness and microhardness were evaluated immediately before the sessions, 24 h and 1 week after the last session. Data were evaluated by ANOVA for repeated measures and Bonferroni post-test or Kruskall-Wallis and Dunn tests (α = 0.05). Representative specimens from each group were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy., Results: 6% HP + violet LED and 35% HP showed the highest color change, while violet LED alone had the lowest results. Enamel roughness analyses showed that 6% HP + violet LED and 35% HP showed changes after two bleaching sessions. No differences were observed regarding enamel microhardness., Conclusions: The use of 6% HP + violet LED showed enhanced bleaching efficacy compared to 35% HP. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the bonding effects of cleaning protocols on dentin impregnated with endodontic sealer residues using ethanol (E) or xylol (X). The effects of dentin acid etching immediately (I) or 7 days (P) after cleaning were also evaluated. For bonding to dentin, universal adhesive (Scotchbond Universal; 3M ESPE) was used. The persistence of sealer residues, hybrid layer formation and microshear bond strength were the performed analysis., Materials and Methods: One hundred and twenty bovine dentin specimens were allocated into 4 groups ( n = 10): G1 (E+I); G2 (X+I); G3 (E+P); and G4 (X+P). The persistence of sealer residues was evaluated by SEM. Confocal laser scanning microscopy images were taken to measure the formed hybrid layer using the Image J program. For microshear bond strength, 4 resin composite cylinders were placed over the dentin after the cleaning protocols. ANOVA followed by Tukey test and Kruskal-Wallis followed by Dunn test were used for parametric and non-parametric data, respectively (α = 5%)., Results: G2 and G4 groups showed a lower persistence of residues ( p < 0.05) and thicker hybrid layer than the other groups ( p < 0.05). No bond strength differences among all groups were observed ( p > 0.05)., Conclusions: Dentin cleaning using xylol, regardless of the time-point of acid etching, provided lower persistence of residues over the surface and thicker hybrid layer. Background: This study evaluated the effects of final agitation methods of irrigants to remove methylene blue and sodium hypochlorite residues after PDT-assisted endodontic treatment on the bond strength of fiber posts cemented with etch-and-rinse adhesive and conventional resin cement., Methods: Ninety bovine teeth were endodontically treated. In sequence, post space preparation followed by methylene blue-mediated PDT and sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) irrigation were performed. Six final irrigations protocols for dye and NaOCl removal were performed prior to cementation with etch-and-rinse adhesive (Adper Scocthbond Multipurpose) and conventional dual resin cement (RelyX ARC): Conventional endodontic irrigation (CEI), passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI), mechanical agitation with XP Endo Finisher (XPF), XP Clean (XPC) or Easy Clean (ECL) and distilled water (NCO - control). After fiber post cementation, push-out bond strength test was performed at different thirds of the post space. Failure mode was also analyzed. ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test was used for data analysis (α=5%)., Results: PUI, XPF e XPC protocols showed the highest bond strength values with no difference among them (p > 0.05), although they were similar to NCO, regardless of the post space third. CEI e ECL showed similar bond strength values, regardless of the third (p > 0.05). Adhesive failure was the most incident for CEI and ECL, while mixed and cohesive failures were predominant in PUI, XPF, XPC and NCO groups., Conclusions: Mechanical agitation of distilled water with XPF, XPC and PUI after methylene blue-mediated PDT and irrigation with 2.5% sodium hypochlorite promoted bond strength of the resin cementation system in post space dentin comparable to control group., (Copyright © 2021. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of fiber post customization on the bond strength (24 hours and 6 months), resin cement thickness, and dentinal penetrability of Adper Scotchbond Multi-Purpose - RelyX ARC (AS-RA), RelyX U200 (R2), and Scotchbond Universal - RelyX Ultimate (SU-RU) cementation systems to root dentin from the cervical-, middle-, and apical-thirds of the post space., Methods: One hundred twenty bovine incisors were endodontically treated. After post space preparation, the roots were divided into six groups, according to the luting protocols (AS-RA, R2, SU-RU) and the type of fiber post [noncustomized post (NC) and customized post (C)]. Customization procedures were peformed using a resin composite (Z350 XT). 24 hours (n=60) or 6 months later (n=60), specimens from the cervical-, middle-, and apical-thirds of the post space were submitted to cementation system thickness measurement, bond strength evaluation, and dentinal penetrability analysis with Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM). Failure mode was classified as adhesive, cohesive, or mixed. Data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey tests (α=0.05)., Results: Cementation protocols with customized fiber posts presented the lowest cementation system thickness, regardless of the cementation system or post space-third (p<0.05), and the highest bond strength values (p<0.05), regardless of the third space (p>0.05), for both periods (24 hours or 6 months). The comparison of push-out bond strength values between 24 hours and 6 months showed a reduction in all groups for the cervical-third (p<0.05). For the middle-third, only noncustomized groups showed reduction (p<0.05). For the apical-third, no reduction was observed (p>0.05)., Conclusions: Anatomical customization favored both the bond strength of cements to dentin and the dentinal penetrability, but with lower cementation system thickness, regardless of cement composition and adhesive strategy., (©Operative Dentistry, 2022.)
