The present work aims to characterize the Neo-Jurassic to Neocomian succession of the Sergipe-Alagoas Basin, located in northeast region of Brazil, in order to discover the influence of tectonics on sedimentation in detailed scale and thus separating this sedimentary succession in tectono-stratigraphic units. Fieldwork observations and stratigraphic sections analysis allowed subdividing this rift succession into three depositional units that indicate different paleogeographic contexts. Unit I, equivalent to the top of Serraria Formation, is characterized by braided fluvial channel deposits, with paleocurrent direction to SE; unit II, corresponding to the base of Feliz Deserto Formation, is composed of anastomosed fluvial channel and floodplain facies associations; and unit III, equivalent to the major part of Feliz Deserto Formation, is characterized by delta deposits with polymodal paleocurrent pattern. The changes of depositional system, as well as paleocurrent direction, suggest that the previously described units were deposited in different evolutionary stages of rifting. Units I and II represent the record of a wide and shallow basin associated with the first stage of rifting. Unit I is characterized by incipient extensional stress generating a wide synclinal depression, associated to the low rate of accommodation and low tectonic activity. These two parameters progressively increase in unit II. The paleocurrent direction of unit I indicates that the depocenter of this wide basin was located at SE of the studied area. No conclusion could be done on paleocurrent from unit II because of the low amount of measurements. Unit III suggests a second stage marked by a deeper basin context, with a high rate of accommodation space associated with the lateral connection of faults and individualization of the half-graben. The scattering in the paleocurrent direction in this unit indicates sedimentary influx coming from several sectors of the half-graben. The boundary between these two stages is marked by a flooding surface that indicates an extremely fast transition and suggests a radical change in geometric characteristics of the basin due to the increase of tectonic activity. RESUMO: O presente trabalho tem como objetivo caracterizar a sucessão Neo-Jurássica a Neocomiana da Bacia de Sergipe-Alagoas, localizada na região nordeste do Brasil, visando descobrir em escala de detalhes a influência da tectônica na sedimentação e separar essa sucessão sedimentar em unidades tectono-estratigráficas. As observações de campo e a análise de perfis estratigráficas permitiram subdividir essa sucessão de rifte em três unidades, que indicam diferentes contextos paleogeográficos. A unidade I, equivalente ao topo da Formação de Serraria, é caracterizada por depósitos de canais fluviais entrelaçados, com direção de paleocorrente para SE; a unidade II, correspondente à base da Formação Feliz Deserto, é composta das associações de fácies de canais fluviais anastomosados e planície de inundação; e a unidade III, equivalente à maior parte da Formação Feliz Deserto, é caracterizada por depósitos deltaicos com padrão de paleocorrente polimodal. As mudanças de sistema deposicional, bem como na direção de paleocorrente, sugerem que as unidades descritas anteriormente foram depositadas em diferentes estágios evolutivos de rifte. As unidades I e II representam o registro de uma bacia ampla e rasa associada ao primeiro estágio do rifte. A unidade I é caracterizada por tensão extensional incipiente resultando em uma ampla depressão sinclinal, associada a baixas taxas de acomodação e baixa atividade tectônica. Pode-se inferir que esses parâmetros aumentam levemente na unidade II pela preservação de sedimentos finos externos ao canal. A direção de paleocorrente da unidade I indica que o depocentro dessa ampla bacia estava localizado no SE da área estudada. Nenhuma conclusão pode ser feita com base nas paleocorrentes da unidade II por causa da baixa quantidade de medidas. A unidade III sugere um segundo estágio marcado por um contexto de bacia mais profunda, com alta taxa de espaço de acomodação associada à conexão lateral de falhas e individualização dos meio-grabens. A dispersão na direção de paleocorrente nessa unidade aponta influxo sedimentar proveniente de vários setores do meio-graben. O limite entre os dois estágios é marcado por uma superfície de inundação caracterizada por sedimentos de prodelta sobre os de canais fluviais anastomosados. Esse contato abrupto indica uma transição extremamente rápida e sugere uma mudança radical nas características geométricas da bacia por conta do aumento da atividade tectônica.

The Exploration and development of what it is commonly known the “pre-salt” layer, offshore SE Brazil, is in its infancy but with reservoirs buried below as much as 3000 meter of salt, the pre-salt play presents a multifaceted deep-water scenario that is bringing new challenges to seismic interpretation in offshore Brazilian exploration and production. Reservoirs in this domain are complex, heterogeneous with layered carbonates which makes accurate reservoir characterization very challenging. Our study here deals with the seismic characterization of the stratigraphy of a lacustrine section from the Lagoa Feia Group (Winter et al., 2007) in the Campos Basin, which extends over an area of 100,000 km2. By using the existing 2D seismic dataset and two deep well logs and core information, we propose a seismic facies analysis and structural characterization of the Lagoa Feia formation. Using some simplified kinematic restoration we show that some of the normal faults affecting the lower units of the Lagoa Feia could be interpreted as pre rift structures sensu latu but also as pre-existing structures re-activated during the main passive margin rift activities. Inferences from well core and seismic stratigraphy clearly suggest that the all Lagoa Feia group has a syn rift depositional character. Different pre- syn- and post-rift seismic stratigraphic units, with corresponding bounding surfaces are then defined. Based on their seismic character, four seismic facies representing the main lithological package in the rift section are recognized: border fault deposits; fine grain-dominated re-sedimented deposits; coarse grain-dominated carbonate rich re-sedimented deposits; and an intrusive wipe-out zone affecting all the pre-salt unit. By proposing this seismic classification and interpretation across the pre salt Campos Basin units this work represents an introductory step to a facies classification and structural interpretation applicable at regional level in the internal SE Brazil offshore area.

The rift section in the Campos Basin, comprises the basal and median portions of the Lagoa Feia Group, and includes the main source rocks in the basin, as well as carbonate reservoir rocks. Interpretation and systematic mapping of 2D seismic lines across two main half-grabens, integrated with lithological well-log data, allowed the construction of a chronostratigraphic chart and an evolutionary model for the initial phase of this basin. Ten seismic stratigraphic units, with corresponding bounding surfaces, and three seismic facies were defined, representing the main lithological groups in the rift section: border fault deposits, fine grain-dominated re-sedimented deposits and coarse grain-dominated re-sedimented deposits. The Campos Basin stratigraphy was subdivided in tectonic systems tracts, which reflect its tectonostratigraphic evolution. The rift initiation systems tract presents a well distributed tectonic. The high tectonic activity systems tract is marked by the significant fault movement. Finally, the low tectonic activity systems tract is characterized by processes of fault restriction. Analysis of each evolutionary step led to a tectonostratigraphic model. Initially, the rift sediments were deposited in synformal depression with no border fault. With continuation of the rifting process, deformation was concentrated along main faults, which led to the development of two half-grabens structure with defined border faults and increasing tectonics. This phase was followed by a stage of incipient fault movement until the cessation of rifting. Basin filling was thus complex and interdependent in the different troughs during the development of the Campos Basin., A seção rifte da Bacia de Campos é composta pela porção basal a intermediária do Grupo Lagoa Feia, e inclui a principal rocha geradora da bacia, e rochas reservatório carbonáticas. A interpretação e o mapeamento sistemático de linhas sísmicas 2D em uma área chave da bacia onde ocorrem dois meio-grábens, integradas com dados de perfis litológicos de poço, e a construção de uma carta cronoestratigráfica, permitiram elaborar um modelo evolutivo para a fase inicial da bacia. Assim, foram definidas dez unidades sismoestratigráficas, superfícies limítrofes chave e três sismofácies, que representam os principais grupos litológicos da seção rifte: depósitos de falha de borda, depósitos ressedimentados de grãos finos e depósitos ressedimentados de grãos grossos. A estratigrafia da Bacia de Campos foi subdividida em tratos de sistema tectônico, que refletem sua evolução tectonoestratigráfica. O trato de sistema de início de rifte apresenta tectônica bem distribuída. O trato de sistema de alta atividade tectônica é marcado pela significativa movimentação das falhas de borda; e o trato de sistemas de baixa atividade tectônica é caracterizado por um processo de fault restriction. A análise de cada etapa evolutiva levou à proposição de um modelo tectonoestratigráfico. Inicialmente os sedimentos sin-rifte foram depositados em uma depressão sinformal sem a presença de falhas de borda. Com o contínuo rifteamento e aumento da atividade tectônica, a deformação concentrou-se nas falhas principais, resultando na formação de dois meio-grábens bem estruturados com bordas de falha bem definidas. Essa fase foi seguida por uma fase de movimentação incipiente das falhas de borda até cessar o rifteamento, resultando em um preenchimento complexo e interdependente entre as diferentes calhas da bacia durante seu desenvolvimento.

Detailed stratigraphic analysis of the Early Permian (Artinskian/Kungurian) succession of the intracratonic Paraná Basin in southernmost Brazil has been applied focusing stratigraphic characterization of potential aquifers. In the study area, the counties of Candiota and Hulha Negra, in the southwestern region of Rio Grande do Sul state, the sedimentary succession (Itararé, Rio Bonito and Palermo units) is interpreted to have been formed in a shallow, wave-dominated sea, originated mainly in a mixed (tide and wave) influenced estuary setting. Four main depositional systems have been recognized: alluvial fan, fluvial-dominated delta, lagoonal estuary and barrier/shoreface. The regional correlation of the lithofacies within the different depositional systems has led to a high-resolution stratigraphic framework, with three third-order depositional sequences (i.e., unconformity-bounded depositional packages formed during a complete cycle of falling and rising base level). The main sandbodies occur within sequence 2 which is formed by seven fouthorder parasequences, and at the base of the third sequence. Under the viewpoint of groundwater prospecting, the best sandbodies occur within parasequences 1,2 4 and 7. Based upon the stratigraphic characterization, optimal borehole locations are given, as well as estimatives on productive dephs and water volume.

A Bacia do Rio do Peixe pertence a um conjunto de riftes abortados no Nordeste brasileiro com trend NE-SW instalados no embasamento pré-cambriano da Província Borborema. Esse eixo de bacias foi originado em resposta ao stress causado pela fragmentação do Pangea no Mesozoico e efetivamente instalados no evento cretáceo que proporcionou a abertura do oceano Atlântico Sul e delineou a margem equatorial brasileira. O SemiGraben de Brejo das Freiras é um dos principais depocentros da bacia e apresenta uma evolução tectonoestratigráfica própria, desenvolvido sob um regime de distensão NWSE, controlado pela reativação frágil de estruturas pré-cambrianas. A interpretação de dados sísmicos 2D e 3D provenientes na porção SE do referido semi-graben, que foi precedida por uma etapa de tratamento de dados empregando técnicas de filtragem e análise de atributos sísmicos, possibilitou uma caracterização mais detalhada do arcabouço estrutural e estratigráfico da região. A interpretação sismoestrutural permitiu o reconhecimento das estruturas indicativas do estilo estrutural da bacia e os mecanismos deformacionais que afetam as camadas sedimentares. A Zona de Falha de Brejo das Freiras apresenta trends NE-SW e, localmente, ENE-WSW, fortemente influenciados pelo fabric do embasamento, além de deformar as camadas originando dobras essencialmente formadas por mecanismos de bending, como dobras de arrasto, por flexão de falha e pela propagação da deformação. A Tectonossequência Rifte, que corresponde ao Grupo Rio do Peixe, foi compartimentada em nove sequências deposicionais e agrupadas em cinco tratos de sistemas tectônicos. As sequências são limitadas por superfícies de inundação e registram ciclos de raseamento para o topo que englobam principalmente litofácies de conglomerados, arenitos, siltitos, folhelhos, argilitos e calcilutitos subordinados. Foram reconhecidos tratos de sistemas tectônicos relacionados aos estágios iniciais de instalação do rifte, sucedidos por momentos de alta e baixa atividade tectônica designados como: Trato de Sistemas Tectônico de Início de Rifte, de Desenvolvimento de Meio-graben, Alta Atividade Tectônica (fase 1), Baixa Atividade Tectônica e Alta Atividade Tectônica (fase 2). Adicionalmente, foi identificado um conjunto de reflexões correspondentes à seção pré-rifte, de ocorrência restrita ao depocentro. Espera-se que estudos como este, integrando as análises estrutural e estratigráfica ajudem no entendimento da influência da tectônica na distribuição espacial e temporal de sistemas deposicionais responsáveis pelo preenchimento da bacia, permitindo a predição de potenciais sistemas petrolíferos, diretamente, ou pela interpretação de análogos. The Rio do Peixe Basin is part of a set of aborted rifts with NE-SW trend along the NE region of Brazil installed on Borborema Province pre-cambrian basement. This axis originated in response to the stress caused by the fragmentation of Pangea during the Mesozoic, and effectively installed during the Cretaceous event that has provided the opening of the South Atlantic Ocean and defined the Brazilian equatorial margin. The Brejo das Freiras Half-Graben is one of the main BRP depocentres and presents a tectonostratigraphic evolution, developed under a NW-SE distension regime, controlled by the fragile reactivation of pre-Cambrian structures. The interpretation of 2D 3D seismic data from the SE portion of this half-graben, which was preceded by a data treatment step using filtering techniques and seismic attributes analysis, allowed a more detailed characterization of the structural and stratigraphic framework of the region. Further seismic structural interpretation allowed the recognition of the structures indicative of the structural style of the basin as well as deformational mechanisms responsible for affecting the sedimentary layers. The Brejo das Freiras fault zone, which presents NE-SW trend and locally ENE-WSW, strongly influenced by the basement fabric, deforms the layers and originates folds essentially formed by bending mechanisms, such as drag folds, fault-bending folds, and fault-propagation. The rift tectonosequence, which corresponds to the Rio do Peixe Group, has been compartmentalized in nine depositional sequences and arranged five tectonic systems tracts. Those sequences are bounded by flooding surfaces and are responsible for registering shallowing upwards cycles encompassing conglomerates, sandstones, siltstones, shales, claystones, and calcilutites lithofacies. Tectonic systems tracts related to the initial stages of installation of the rift, succeeded by moments of high and low tectonic activity, have been designate as: Rift Initiation Tectonic Systems Tract, HalfGraben Development, High Tectonic Activity (phase 1), Low Tectonic Activity and High Tectonic Activity (phase 2). A set of reflections corresponding to the pre-rift section with occurrence restrict to the depocenter was additionally interpreted. The expected result for the present study, which integrates structural and stratigraphic analysis, is a contribution to the understanding of the tectonic influence on spatial and temporal distribution of depositional systems responsible for filling the basin, allowing the prediction of potential petroleum systems, either directly or by the interpretation of analogs.

The Aptian sedimentary sequence of Mucuri Member, lower Mariricu Formation, constitutes the pre-salt of Espirito Santo Basin. Proximal successions are dominantly clastic consisting of fluvial and coastal sediments deposited within the margins of a wide lake, thus corresponding to the marginal deposits of lacustrine carbonate reservoirs located in distal portions of the basin. Economic interest for oil is centered on such distal reservoirs, consequently proximal sections lack detailed studies. The Espirito Santo Basin is located near pre-salt official polygon, with oil exploration active for over six decades. The main objective of this study is the tectono-stratigraphic analysis of the clastic Mucuri Member, Aptian sag succession of the Espirito Santo Basin. Leading methodology is a seismostratigraphic characterization based on 220 2D lines, 1 3D volume, 103 well log data and 1 cored well. Four seismostratigraphic units were identified, delimited by three conformable horizons. Unit-bounding reflectors coincide with gamma ray maxima or minima interpreted to reflect shale or anhydrites deposited in deep water environments, corresponding to lacustrine maximum flooding surfaces. The structural framework is characterized by minor faults in the north onto shallow basement platforms, and in the south by half-graben bounded by normal faults developed during the rift phase. The Mucuri Member records an enlargement in depositional area from its base to top unit witnessing an overall lacustrine base level rise during depositon. The geometry of depositional area was initially influenced by the paleorelief of the preceding rift basins. The seismic units record a decrease in thickness as remnant topography was gradually filled and the upper units extended beyond the rift boundaries, covering a larger area. The Early Cretaceous Mucuri Member composes the first post-rift sequence of Espirito Santo Basin marked by the cessation of fault activity and the onset of thermal subsidence.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) A Bacia Potiguar localiza-se na intersecção entre as margens leste e equatorial brasileiras, abrangendo áreas dos estados do Rio Grande do Norte e Ceará. O preenchimento sedimentar dessa bacia é representado por rochas que foram depositadas desde o Neocomiano até o Quaternário, no decorrer de diferentes estágios tectonossedimentares, sendo eles: Rifte, PósRifte e Drifte. O último estágio, em especial, designa um período de relativa quiescência tectônica marcada por taxas de subsidência mais modestas, que propiciaram a deposição, em um contexto de mar aberto, da Supersequência Drifte. Esta supersequência é subdividida nas fases transgressiva (porção inferior) e regressiva (porção superior), por meio de uma importante discordância regional de idade campaniana superior. Os depósitos da fase drifte regressiva, alvo deste estudo, possuem a sua litoestratigrafia designada pelo Grupo Agulha, que é constituído pelas formações Barreiras, Tibau, Guamaré e Ubarana. A principal finalidade desta pesquisa foi realizar uma análise estratigráfica da sucessão drifte regressiva da Bacia Potiguar, sob a ótica da estratigrafia de sequências, visando um melhor entendimento acerca do seu processo evolutivo nas regiões de plataforma, talude e bacia. Para tal propósito, foram utilizadas informações litológicas e perfis de raios gama de cinco poços exploratórios, durante uma fase de análise 1D. Seguidamente, as informações oriundas da fase prévia auxiliaram a interpretação de sete linhas sísmicas, no decorrer de uma fase de análise 2D. Ao final, os resultados das análises 1D e 2D foram integrados, levando à individualização de cinco sequências deposicionais na sucessão estudada. De modo geral, nas porções mais proximais, as duas sequências mais antigas (1 e 2) foram caracterizadas por uma preponderância de depósitos de talude, bem como por padrões fortemente progradacionais. Já, as sequências 3, 4 e 5 possuem uma tendência mais agradacional e estão representadas pela sedimentação de sucessões plataformais. No tocante a Sequência 3, esta é marcada por um amplo desenvolvimento da fábrica carbonática, enquanto que a Sequência 4 é caracterizada por um significativo influxo siliciclástico. A Sequência 5, por sua vez, possui a sua configuração deposicional definida por um importante estágio de elevação eustática global, o que resultou na ampla migração dos depósitos de porções mais distais para as águas mais rasas. Finalmente, no contexto marinho profundo, as cinco sequências deposicionais apresentam um arcabouço semelhante, estando retratadas pela preponderância de sucessões hemipelágicas, com a presença secundária de depósitos associados a fluxos gravitacionais, cuja ocorrência se deu principalmente nas duas sequências mais antigas (1 e 2). The Potiguar Basin is located at the intersection between the east and equatorial Brazilian margins, covering areas of the Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará states. The sedimentary filling of this basin is represented by rocks that were deposited from Neocomian to Quaternary, during different tectono-sedimentary stages, being: Rift, Post-Rift and Drift. The last stage, in particular, designates a period of relative tectonic quiescence marked by more modest subsidence rates, which led to the deposition, in an open ocean context, of the Drift Supersequence. This supersequence is subdivided into the transgressive (lower portion) and regressive (upper portion) phases, by means of an important regional unconformity with upper Campanian age. The deposits of the regressive drift phase, target of this study, have their lithostratigraphy designated by the Agulha Group, which consists of the Barreiras, Tibau, Guamaré and Ubarana formations. The main purpose of this research was to perform a stratigraphic analysis of the regressive drift succession of the Potiguar Basin, from the perspective of sequence stratigraphy, aiming at a better understanding of its evolutionary process in the shelf, slope and basin regions. For this purpose, lithological information and gamma ray logs of five exploratory wells were used during a 1D analysis phase. Subsequently, the information from the previous phase helped to interpret seven seismic lines in the course of a 2D analysis phase. At end, the results of the 1D and 2D analyzes were integrated, leading to the individualization of five depositional sequences in the studied succession. In general, in more proximal portions, the two older sequences (1 and 2) were characterized by a preponderance of slope deposits, as well as by strongly progradational patterns. On the other hand, sequences 3, 4 and 5 have a more aggradational tendency and are represented by the sedimentation of shelf deposits. Concerning the Sequence 3, this is marked by a wide development of the carbonate sedimentation, whereas the Sequence 4 is characterized by a significant siliciclastic influx. The Sequence 5, in turn, has its depositional configuration defined by an important stage of global eustatic rise, which resulted in an extensive migration of the deposits from more distal portions to the shallower zones. Finally, in the deep marine context, the five depositional sequences show a similar framework, being denoted by the preponderance of hemipelagic successions, with the secondary presence of deposits associated with gravitational flows that occurs mainly in the two oldest sequences (1 and 2).

Apresentando reservatórios em águas profundas, o pré-sal das bacias de Campos e Santos é um cenário com depósitos heterogêneos e complexos, e assim traz novos desafios para a interpretação sísmica. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo a caracterização sísmica do intervalo rifte (de idade Hauteriviano Superior ao Barremiano, imediatamente abaixo dos reservatórios pré- -sal) nas bacias de Campos e Santos com a utilização de dados de sísmica 2D e dois perfis de poços. Foram analisadas as texturas sísmicas e com a integração dos dados litológicos se definiu três sismofácies correspondentes: Sismofácies 1 (depósito de falha de borda) – apresenta comportamento semelhante em ambas as bacias e com ocorrência encaixada na falha de borda em uma zona ampla e bem definida; Sismofácies 2 (depósito de sedimentos finos) – amplamente identificada nas bacias de Campos e Santos e que grada lateralmente para a sismofácies 3; Sismofácies 3 (depósito de grainstones e rudstones) – em ambas as bacias têm ocorrência restrita e de ocorrência errática, tanto em zonas altas da margem flexural, quanto nas zonas profundas próximas do depocentro dos meio-grábens analisados., With deep-water reservoirs, the pre-salt scenario in Campos and Santos basins setting heterogeneous and complex deposits, and thus brings new challenges for seismic interpretation. This study aims at the seismic characterization of the rift section (Upper Hauterivian to Barremian, immediately below the pre-salt reservoirs) in the Campos and Santos basins, with the use of 2D seismic data and two well logs. We analyzed the seismic textures, and the integration of lithologic data defined the corresponding to three seismic facies: Seismic facies 1 (fault-border deposits) displays similar behavior in both basins, with occurrence restricted to the fault borders in a wide and well-defined area; Seismic facies 2 (fine-grained deposits) is widespread in the Campos and Santos basins and grades laterally to seismic facies 3; Seismic facies 3 (grainstone and rudstone deposits) has restricted and erratic occurrence in both areas of the high flexural margin, as well as in the deep areas near the depocenter of the analyzed half-grabens.
