Abstract

This research paper reports the fabrication and evaluation of titanium dioxide (TiO2)- and zinc oxide (ZnO)-based dye-sensitized solar cells with anthocyanin dye extracted from pomegranate. TiO2 and ZnO were synthesized using the hydrothermal synthesis and chemical bath deposition techniques, respectively. The scanning electron microscopy analysis showed that TiO2 had nanopillars made up of nano rods with dimensions of 111.866, 90.521, and 81.908 nm, while ZnO had hexagonal patterned nanorods with lengths of 283.294 nm and diameters of 91.782 nm. The absorption spectra of the pomegranate dye were analysed and the strongest absorption peak was found to be at 520 nm, which corresponds to the existing anthocyanin pigment. The band gap of pomegranate dye was noted down to be 2.45 eV. The performance of the dye-sensitized solar cells was evaluated using one sun illumination (100 mW/cm2) where the dye-sensitized solar cell with TiO2 nanopillars achieved an improved efficiency of 0.46% whereas the dye-sensitized solar cell with ZnO nanorods showed a considerably reduced efficiency of 0.42%. 18. Automatic solar tracking system: a review pertaining to advancements and challenges in the current scenario

Abstract

An automatic solar tracking system is an approach for optimizing the generation of solar power and modifying the angles and direction of a solar panel by considering changes in the position and path of the sun. The performance status of an automatic solar tracking system depends on various factors, including its design, location, and maintenance or repairs. The solar energy from the sun that the Earth intercepts is approximately 1.8 × 1011MW, which is thousands of times greater than the intensity at which the Earth now uses all other commercially available energy sources combined. Currently, research into automatic solar trackers is on the rise, as solar energy is abundant in nature, but its use in a highly efficient way is still lacking. This paper provides a detailed literature review and highlights some key advancements and challenges associated with state-of-the-art automatic solar tracking systems. The performance of the dual-axis photovoltaic tracking system outperforms that of the stationary systems by more than 27% based on the overall system efficiency. Under diverse weather conditions, the efficiency of the scheduled-based solar tracking systems was enhanced by 4.2% compared with that of the light-dependent resistor-based solar trackers.This paper provides a detailed literature review and highlights some key advancements and challenges associated with state-of-the-art automatic solar tracking systems.Graphical Abstract

Abstract

Summary: Large low Earth orbit satellite constellations require machine learning methods for enabling autonomy in health keeping of the satellites. Autonomy in health keeping entail's fault detection, isolation and reconfiguration. However, prior to model building, it becomes imperative to conduct exploratory data analysis of the data to gain an intuition of data and to decide the best model. Univariate exploratory data analysis has been carried out on a BUS CURRENT sensor of electrical power system of a low Earth orbit satellite to gain an understanding of data. Various aspects of data like presence of outliers, sampling frequency, missing values, comparison of imputation methods to fill missing values seasonality and trend analysis, stationarity test on data, rolling mean and autocorrelation and partial auto correlation plots have been made, and a detailed statistical analysis of results has been conducted. Abstract

In this study, the two designs of the compact microstrip patch antennas, exhibiting ultra wideband characteristics are presented. The design offers an overall bandwidth of 4.7 and 5.2 GHz with a return loss of −35dB and −40 dB, respectively. The presented designs of the antennas are targeted for applications in medical telemetry. Geometrical optimizations for the slotted rectangular patch antenna loaded with notches are carried out to enhance the bandwidth over the ultra wideband. Unlike the conventional way, the microstrip patch antenna is optimized by considering an infinite substrate. The effect of finite substrate on the bandwidth of the microstrip patch is investigated leading to better results in terms of simplicity, compact size, and bandwidth. Also, it is perceived that the partial ground plane, which is incorporated, improves the antenna's bandwidth drastically and also the reflection coefficient. The prototype of the two presented designs is formulated by creating notches with three slots naming it to be MPA1, and the other one without slots and with only notches naming it to be MPA2 for observing the relative effect of slots and the partial ground plane on the bandwidth. A very close agreement is confirmed between the simulated and the experimental values of the reflection coefficient and the bandwidth. The maximum percentage bandwidth of 85% is attained in the case of MPA2, while a maximum gain of 2.39 dBi is achieved for MPA1, which offers flexibility to manufacturers for use. Abstract

Currently, due to the widespread population growth, there is a widespread concern about an electricity shortage. As a result, smart devices have evolved and gained significant attention to reduce power consumption in home appliances due to electricity shortages. However, it lacks a universal remote control that can control home appliances based on environmental conditions. To overcome these challenges, this study proposed a hardware-based remote-control system that operates both in autonomous and semiautonomous modes to control home appliances based on environmental conditions. In the autonomous mode, the receiver section regulates the parameters under ambient conditions by varying the appliance's applied voltage levels via a dimmer. The parameters in semiautonomous are monitored by the user via various levels of remote control. A 2.4 GHz RF modem is used to establish wireless personal network (WPAN) communication between the remote and the receiver. In addition, a Wi-Fi modem is built into the receiver to enable internet-based mobile applications to operate appliances. During the MATLAB analysis, a proportional integral derivative (PID) controller with a particle swarm optimization (PSO) method was found as a superior approach to control the home appliance with adequate environmental conditions. It is concluded from the MATLAB study that the PSO-PID controller delivered an energy saving of 14.88% for the heater, 36.9% for the exhaust fan, and 37.49% for the light bulb compared to the conventional appliances.
