High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
We report a measurement of muon-neutrino disappearance in the T2K experiment. The 295-km muon-neutrino beam from Tokai to Kamioka is the first implementation of the off-axis technique in a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. With data corresponding to 1.43 10**20 protons on target, we observe 31 fully-contained single muon-like ring events in Super-Kamiokande, compared with an expectation of 104 +- 14 (syst) events without neutrino oscillations. The best-fit point for two-flavor nu_mu -> nu_tau oscillations is sin**2(2 theta_23) = 0.98 and |\Delta m**2_32| = 2.65 10**-3 eV**2. The boundary of the 90 % confidence region includes the points (sin**2(2 theta_23),|\Delta m**2_32|) = (1.0, 3.1 10**-3 eV**2), (0.84, 2.65 10**-3 eV**2) and (1.0, 2.2 10**-3 eV**2)., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors - Abstract
Precise measurement of neutrino beam direction and intensity was achieved based on a new concept with modularized neutrino detectors. INGRID (Interactive Neutrino GRID) is an on-axis near detector for the T2K long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. INGRID consists of 16 identical modules arranged in horizontal and vertical arrays around the beam center. The module has a sandwich structure of iron target plates and scintillator trackers. INGRID directly monitors the muon neutrino beam profile center and intensity using the number of observed neutrino events in each module. The neutrino beam direction is measured with accuracy better than 0.4 mrad from the measured profile center. The normalized event rate is measured with 4% precision., Comment: 32 pages, 27 figures, submitted to Nucl. Instr. and Meth. A

A new near detector for the K2K long baseline neutrino experiment, the SciBar, was constructed and started data taking to study neutrino interactions. In K2K, neutrino oscillation is studied by comparing the number of neutrino interactions and energy spectrum between near and far detectors. In order to study neutrino oscillations more precisely, it is necessary to improve the measurement of neutrino spectrum and interactions below 1 GeV, where the latest K2K results suggest maximum oscillation. For that purpose, SciBar is designed to be fully active with fine segmentation. We present the design and basic performance. All detector components have been working as expected. Also presented are the measurements of charged current interactions which are used in the latest K2K oscillation analysis. Index Terms--Detectors, neutrinos, scintillation detectors.

- Abstract
– OBJECTIVE: Systemic inflammatory response may contribute to the onset of febrile seizures (FSs). The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has been reported to be useful for differentiating simple and complex FSs in children with a first FS. This study aimed to determine whether easily measurable inflammatory markers were useful for distinguishing between the types of FSs in children with FSs not limited to the first FS. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of children aged 6-60 months who were presented to the Atsugi City Hospital in Japan for the treatment of FSs between December 2018 and February 2020. A complex FS was defined as a seizure with multiple seizures during the same febrile illness, prolonged seizures and/or focal seizures. A simple FS was defined as a seizure without the characteristics of complex FS. We assessed complete blood count, C-reactive protein, and calculated osmotic pressure. RESULTS: A total of 205 children with FSs (simple, 139; complex, 66) fulfilled the inclusion criteria. None of the inflammatory markers, including NLR, could predict the FS type. The median osmotic pressure was 279.0, 278.8, 283.3, and 278.3 mOsm/kg H
2 O for children with simple, multiple, prolonged, and focal seizures, respectively. Children with prolonged seizures had a significantly higher calculated osmotic pressure than those with simple FSs (p<0.001) and multiple seizures during the same febrile illness (p=0.004). CONCLUSIONS: Easily measurable inflammatory markers, including NLR, were not useful for distinguishing between types of FSs in children. Large multicenter studies are needed to evaluate the association between osmotic pressure and FS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

ABSORPTION spectra ,ZEOLITES ,HYDROXYL group - Abstract
Transient spectra following the v=1←0 excitation of the OH stretching mode of Bro\nsted acidic hydroxyl groups in normal and deuterated mordenite zeolites have been measured by a two-color picosecond pump–probe technique. When the OH and OD stretching bands were excited by resonant IR pulses, transient bleaching of the fundamental band (v=1←0) and the transient hot band (v=2←1) absorption signal were observed. For the OH and OD groups free of adsorbates, the spectral widths of the pump-induced signals were broadened by ∼4 cm-1 due to pure dephasing from the convoluted width of the pump and probe IR pulses. When the OH and OD groups were adsorbed by a Xe atom, the frequencies of the ν(OH) and ν(OD) bands shifted to lower frequency and at the same time the widths of both the transient bleaching and the transient hot band absorption were much broader than those of the isolated hydroxyl groups by the factor of more than three. Actually, the widths of the transient signals were about the same as those of the linear absorption signals. An adiabatic approximation has been employed to interpret the observed broadening/shift of the IR bands by making use of the results of DFT (density functional theory) calculations performed on a model cluster consisting of a Xe atom and an H3Si–(OH)–AlH3 substrate. The result agreed well with the observed spectral features. © 1996 American Institute of Physics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

By means of tunable infrared pump–probe experiment, vibrational relaxation rates (v=1→0) of OH stretching mode of Bro\nsted acidic hydroxyl groups in a mordenite zeolite, which were interacting with noble gases (He, Ar, Kr, or Xe), were measured. The population lifetime, T1, decreased with the increase of the interaction with noble gases, e.g., 170 ps and 58 ps for isolated hydroxyl groups and ones interacting with Xe, respectively. Using a simple linear chain model, the mechanism for the enhancement of the relaxation rate was studied. © 1996 American Institute of Physics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
We report a measurement of muon-neutrino disappearance in the T2K experiment. The 295-km muon-neutrino beam from Tokai to Kamioka is the first implementation of the off-axis technique in a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. With data corresponding to 1.43×1020 protons on target, we observe 31 fully-contained single μ-like ring events in Super-Kamiokande, compared with an expectation of 104±14 (syst) events without neutrino oscillations. The best-fit point for two-flavor νμ→ντ oscillations is sin 2(2θ23)=0.98 and |Δm232|=2.65×10−3 eV2. The boundary of the 90% confidence region includes the points (sin 2(2θ23), |Δm232|)=(1.0, 3.1×10−3 eV2), (0.84, 2.65×10−3 eV2) and (1.0, 2.2×10−3 eV2).

High durability against carbon deposition on Ni anodes of internal-reforming solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) is one of the most significant challenges in the utilization of SOFCs. Carbon deposition is strongly affected by the type of solid oxide electrolyte, although it occurs on Ni surfaces which are a few hundred nanometers away from the solid oxide electrolyte. Carbon deposition under CH
4 flow at 1,073 K on Ni particles on yttria-stabilized ZrO2 was determined to occur more readily than on Ni particles on Gd-doped CeO2 . We have examined how the solid oxides interact with the Ni surfaces in anodes using Auger electron microanalysis and infrared spectroscopy with adsorbed molecules. The results suggest that the CeO2 species migrate on the Ni surfaces under reducing conditions. The chemical influence of CeO2 migration on the Ni surface was confirmed by infrared spectra of adsorbed CO on Ni sites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
The size dependence of the oxygen reduction reaction activity was studied for TaOx nanoparticles electrodeposited on carbon black for application to polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs). Compared with a commercial Ta2O5 material, the ultrafine oxide nanoparticles exhibited a distinctively high onset potential different from that of the bulky oxide particles.

- Abstract
The normalized event rate is measured with 4% precision.

- Abstract
We performed an improved search for νμ → νe oscillation with the KEK to Kamioka (K2K) long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment, using the full data sample of 9.2 × 1019 protons on target. No evidence for a νe appearance signal was found, and we set bounds on the νμ → νe oscillation parameters. At Δm2 = 2.8×10−3 eV2, the best fit value of the K2K νμ disappearance analysis, we set an upper limit of sin2 2Θμe < 0.13 at 90% confidence level.

- Abstract
The weak nucleon axial-vector form factor for quasi-elastic interactions is determined using neutrino interaction data from the K2K Scintillating Fiber detector in the neutrino beam at KEK. More than 12,000 events are analyzed, of which half are charged-current quasi-elastic interactions νμn → μ-p occurring primarily in oxygen nuclei. We use a relativistic Fermi gas model for oxygen and assume the form factor is approximately a dipole with one parameter, the axial vector mass MA, and fit to the shape of the distribution of the square of the momentum transfer from the nucleon to the nucleus. Our best fit result for MA = 1.20 ± 0.12 GeV. Furthermore, this analysis includes updated vector form factors from recent electron scattering experiments and a discussion of the effects of the nucleon momentum on the shape of the fitted distributions.

- Abstract
We present results for νμ oscillation in the KEK to Kamioka (K2K) long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. K2K uses an accelerator-produced νμ beam with a mean energy of 1.3 GeV directed at the Super-Kamiokande detector. We observed the energy dependent disappearance of νμ, which we presume have oscillated to ντ. The probability that we would observe these results if there is no neutrino oscillation is 0.0050% (4.0σ).
