The electronic nature and the layered oxysulfide [Sr.sub.2-x][Ca.sub.x][Cu.sub.2]Co[O.sub.2][S.sub.2] with Co[O.sub.2] which has strongly correlated Co[O.sub.2] square planes is studied. A remarkable decrease in the electrical resistivity in the Sr defect system, and the chemical shifts of S 2s and S 2p orbitals suggest that carriers are doped into [Cu.sub.2][S.sub.2] layers.

We have studied the electronic nature of the layered oxysulfide Sr2-xCaxCu2CoO2S2 which has strongly correlated CoO2 square planes. These materials exhibit narrow-gap semiconducting behavior and the conduction mechanism depends on the temperature. Valence band x-ray photoemission spectroscopy spectra show that Ca doping and the production of Sr defects cause the generation of a quasiparticle band near the Fermi level. Stomach contents of 437 age-0 year Pacific bluefin tuna Thunnus orientalis (20·3-59·4 cm fork length, LF) caught in the Tsushima Current and the Kuroshio regions around Japan were examined to investigate their ontogenetic diet shift. Prey compositions were diverse and different between regions. Although the seasonal growth patterns were different between regions, ontogenetic diet shifts shared a common pattern. In the Tsushima Current region (Sea of Japan), small T. orientalis (20-25 cm LF) preyed upon small squid (juvenile Enoploteuthis chunii), and larger ones (25-35 cm LF) gradually shifted their diet to mesopelagic fish ( Maurolicus japonicus). In the Kuroshio region (Pacific Ocean), small T. orientalis (20-25 cm LF) preyed upon small zooplankton (mostly crustacean larvae), and larger ones (25-40 cm LF) shifted to epipelagic fishes ( Etrumeus teres, Sardinops melanostictus and Engraulis japonicus). The observed data suggest that T. orientalis switch to a diet more based on fish prey items, which have more body mass and greater swimming ability than small squid and zooplankton, after they reach a LF of 25 cm. Hakutsurunishiki is a sake rice cultivar bred using Yamadabo (seed parent) and Wataribune 2 (pollen parent), equivalent to a Yamadanishiki sibling. This study evaluated the structural characteristics of the Hakutsurunishiki rice grain that contribute to the brewing characteristics of daiginjo-shu, via a comparison with Yamadanishiki. Hakutsurunishiki brown rice was a little heavy and had a large white core. Observing a cross-section of white rice after soaking revealed that the rice grain structure of Hakutsurunishiki was different from that of Yamadanishiki. Hakutsurunishiki white rice showed fewer voids than Yamadanishiki, promoting a slower water absorption rate. Glucose distribution in rice koji obtained by mass spectrometry imaging showed that Hakutsurunishiki rice koji, like Yamadanishiki, is tsuki-haze type, suggesting that its grain structure is suitable for making rice koji for daiginjo-shu. The use of cephalopod beaks in ecological and population dynamics studies has allowed major advances of our knowledge on the role of cephalopods in marine ecosystems in the last 60 years. Since the 1960's, with the pioneering research by Malcolm Clarke and colleagues, cephalopod beaks (also named jaws or mandibles) have been described to species level and their measurements have been shown to be related to cephalopod body size and mass, which permitted important information to be obtained on numerous biological and ecological aspects of cephalopods in marine ecosystems. In the last decade, a range of new techniques has been applied to cephalopod beaks, permitting new kinds of insight into cephalopod biology and ecology. The workshop on cephalopod beaks of the Cephalopod International Advisory Council Conference (Sesimbra, Portugal) in 2022 aimed to review the most recent scientific developments in this field and to identify future challenges, particularly in relation to taxonomy, age, growth, chemical composition (i.e., DNA, proteomics, stable isotopes, trace elements) and physical (i.e., structural) analyses. In terms of taxonomy, new techniques (e.g., 3D geometric morphometrics) for identifying cephalopods from their beaks are being developed with promising results, although the need for experts and reference collections of cephalopod beaks will continue. The use of beak microstructure for age and growth studies has been validated. Stable isotope analyses on beaks have proven to be an excellent technique to get valuable information on the ecology of cephalopods (namely habitat and trophic position). Trace element analyses is also possible using beaks, where concentrations are significantly lower than in other tissues (e.g., muscle, digestive gland, gills). Extracting DNA from beaks was only possible in one study so far. Protein analyses can also be made using cephalopod beaks. The thiamine pyrophospate (TPP)-dependent thiA riboswitch in Aspergillus oryzae regulates alternative mRNA splicing via TPP-riboswitch binding to reduce protein production. Based on the sequences involved in alternative splicing found in Neurospora crassa, we identified unique sequences that are thought to play a role in the alternative splicing of the thiA riboswitch. Based on the mechanism of alternative splicing regulated by the thiA riboswitch, we constructed a new TPP-dependent artificial riboswitch, which unlike the wild-type riboswitch, promotes, rather than inhibits, gene expression. We found that a target gene controlled by this turn-on artificial riboswitch can be sufficiently expressed for practical use in A. oryzae. A low band-gap polymer, PTB7-Th, is one of the typical p-type semiconductors among the next-generation solar-cell materials that have achieved power conversion efficiencies of over 10%. However, the internal deterioration mechanism of high-efficiency polymer solar cells such as PTB7-Th-based cells is still an open issue and has been extensively studied. Here, we report a study with operando electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy for PTB7-Th polymer solar cells with an n-type semiconductor PC 71 BM to clarify the internal deterioration mechanism at a molecular level. We have directly observed ambipolar charge accumulation with a face-on molecular orientation in the cells under simulated solar irradiation using an operando light-induced ESR technique. Moreover, we have found a clear correlation between the charge accumulation and performance deterioration of the cells. The charge accumulation sites have been clarified by the ESR analysis and density functional theory calculation. The prevention of such charge accumulation on the basis of the present finding would be important for the commercialization of high-efficiency polymer solar cells.

Introduction: Spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) type 34, a form of autosomal dominantly inherited ataxia, has recently been associated with mutations in the ELOVL4 gene. However, a genetic study of the prevalence of SCA34 in an ataxia cohort has never been reported., Methods: We performed a mutation screening of ELOVL4 in a cohort of 153 undiagnosed index ataxia patients, selected after excluding for common SCA types, in a series of 506 Japanese index ataxia patients., Results: Heterozygous mutation c.698C > T (p.T233M) was detected in an index patient with multisystem neurodegeneration including ataxia and erythrokeratodermia skin lesions, an archetypal skin phenotype in SCA34. The patient's father also presented with ataxia but not skin lesions. Although this mutation has been recently reported in a single English-Canadian patient, the present study confirms its cosegregation with the ataxia phenotype in the Japanese kindred. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the patient and his father revealed marked pontine and cerebellar atrophy as well as the hot cross bun sign, that is common in cerebellar type of multiple system atrophy and was also described in SCA34 patients harboring two other mutations: p.L168F and p.W246G., Conclusion: This represents the first genetic study of the prevalence of SCA34 in an ataxia cohort and demonstrates its low prevalence (0.2%) in ataxia patients. The broad SCA34 clinical spectrum suggests variable multisystem neurodegeneration. We herein report a case of posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) and reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS) that occurred immediately after blood transfusion. A 64-year-old Japanese woman was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis due to hepatitis B 2 years ago. She was admitted to our hospital with hemorrhagic shock due to esophageal variceal rupture. She was hospitalized with rapid blood pumping transfusion, after which consciousness disorder appeared, and her blood pressure suddenly increased. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed PRES and RCVS. We speculated that hypoalbuminemia and blood transfusion might have been involved in the development of PRES and RCVS.

Dimethyl trisulfide (DMTS) is the main component of hineka, an off-flavor generated in sake during storage. Genshu, or undiluted sake, is usually diluted with water during warimizu, the process of adjusting the alcohol content of sake. In this study, we evaluated how the inorganic element composition of sake dilution water affects the DMTS-producing potential of the sake (DMTS-pp, determined as the DMTS concentration in sake stored at 70°C for 1 week after dilution) using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Partial least squares (PLS) regression analysis was conducted with the ICP-MS data as the explanatory variable and DMTS-pp as the response variable, and the selection of inorganic elements for the construction of the PLS model was performed using variable importance in projection scores. Despite numerous studies across the large geographic range of the sperm whale ( Physeter macrocephalus ), little is known about the diet and mitochondrial DNA haplotypes of this strongly female philopatric species in waters off Southeast Asia. A female sperm whale found dead in Singapore waters provided the opportunity to study her diet and mitochondrial DNA haplotype. Here we report on the identification of stomach contents and mitochondrial DNA haplotype of this individual, and we include coastal hydrodynamic modelling to determine the possible geographic origin of the whale. At least 28 species of prey were eaten by this adult female whale, most of which were cephalopods. The mesopelagic squids Taonius pavo, Histioteuthis pacifica, Chiroteuthis imperator, and Ancistrocheirus lesueurii made up over 65% of the whale's stomach contents. Plastic debris was also found in the whale's stomach. Based on the diet, genetics, and coastal hydrodynamic modelling that suggest an easterly drift of the whale carcass over several days, the dead sperm whale in Singapore probably originated from a pod in the Southern Indian Ocean. This study provides an increase in the understanding the diet and natural history of the sperm whale in Southeast Asia. The combined analyses of stomach contents, DNA, and hydrodynamic modeling could provide a context to future studies on the sperm whale strandings, and have broader applicability for other marine mammals in the region., Competing Interests: The authors declare there are no competing interests.

We herein report a 67-year-old female who presented with progressive dementia and disturbance of consciousness. Brain CT showed multiple subcortical calcifications with edema. Enhanced CT showed multiple abnormal vessels in the left hemisphere. Electroencephalography indicated diffuse spike and slow wave complex, so non-convulsive status epilepticus was diagnosed. Cerebral angiography revealed several feeder arteries with retrograde leptomeningeal venous drainage. We diagnosed her with Borden type III cerebral dural arteriovenous fistulas. Trans-arterial embolization with n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate was performed, and she has experienced no epileptic attacks for at least ten months. Calcification changes are sometimes seen in Borden type II dural arteriovenous fistulas but not in aggressive types, such as Borden type III. It is important to suspect dural arteriovenous fistulas when we encounter patients with progressive dementia or/and epilepsy with cerebral calcification lesions, as this may be a treatable disease condition.

The first chromogenic substrate for Aspergillus oryzae acid protease, 'HAP-01', was successfully developed after evaluating the substrate specificity of the enzyme. Furthermore, with HAP-01, digestion-triggered chromophore release was employed as a novel chromogenic technique.

The oegopsid squid family Onychoteuthidae was recently revised based on morphology, but sufficient material for a complementary molecular analysis has not been available until now. In the present study, over 250 sequences of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and 16S rRNA for 222 individuals were analysed to create a combined phylogeny for the family. Results support monophyly for the family and all seven onychoteuthid genera (including Moroteuthopsis, established herein as the senior genus name for species formerly attributed to Kondakovia); 29 genetically distinct species were recovered, with the BIN (Barcode Index Number) analysis for COI showing good congruence overall with morphological species groupings. No sequences were available for five additional known species, making the total family diversity likely to exceed 34 species. Seven of the BINs formed in this study appear to represent undescribed taxa, suggesting that even in this relatively well-studied family, much additional work remains before a comprehensive understanding of the diversity and evolutionary relationships for the Onychoteuthidae can be achieved., (Copyright © 2018. Polymer solar cells are one of the promising energy sources because of the easy solution-processable production with large area at a low cost without toxicity. Among the polymer materials, a donor-acceptor conjugated copolymer PTB7 has been extensively studied because of the typical high-performance polymer solar cells. Here, we show operando direct observation of charge accumulation in PTB7:PC 71 BM blend solar cells from a microscopic viewpoint using electron spin resonance spectroscopy. The accumulation of ambipolar charges in the PTB7-based cells is directly observed for the first time, which shows a clear correlation with the performance deterioration during device operation. The sites of the ambipolar charge accumulation are elucidated at the molecular level, whose information would be useful for improving the cell durability in addition to the performance improvement.

Subcutaneous emphysema is not a rare complication in intensive care unit patients. Recently, ultrasound guidance for central venous puncture is becoming popular; however, the information on imaging for subcutaneous emphysema is limited. We encountered a patient complicated with severe pneumomediastinum and subsequent subcutaneous emphysema. The catheter replacement was attempted, and we examined the visuality of cervical vessels using ultrasound sonography before the intervention. Internal jugular vein itself was observed despite of subcutaneously migrated air bubble; however, the range of ultrasound image was limited, and the relationship between the vessel and the adjacent tissue was unclear.

Objective: The DNA oxidation byproduct 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) is a well-known biomarker used to evaluate oxidative stress. We previously reported that the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is increased in cultured gingival fibroblasts (GF) from patients with Down syndrome (DS). Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate 8-OHdG as a marker of oxidative stress in saliva of DS patients., Materials and Methods: The study group consisted of DS patients (66 patients; age range 1-62 years) and systemically healthy control subjects (71 subjects; age range 4-58 years). Periodontal status was judged based on standard measurements of probing depth (PD) and gingival index (GI). The salivary levels of 8-OHdG were determined using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay., Results: The mean of PD and GI values were not significantly different between young (1-12 years) patients with DS (DS-1) and controls (C-1) or between adult (30-62 years) patients with DS (DS-2) and controls (C-2). There were statistically significant positive correlations between the salivary 8-OHdG levels and GI in the DS-1, DS-2 and C-2 groups, but not in the C-1. There were also statistically significant positive correlations between salivary 8-OHdG levels and PD in the DS-2 and C-2 groups, but not in the DS-1 or C-1 groups. The salivary levels of 8-OHdG of DS-1 and DS-2 groups were significantly higher than in the C-l and C-2 groups, respectively., Conclusions: These results suggest that progressive oxidative stress occurred in DS patients. Background: There is considerable interest in inducing RNA interference (RNAi) in neurons to study gene function and identify new targets for disease intervention. Although short interfering RNAs (siRNAs) have been used to silence genes in neurons, in vivo delivery of RNAi remains a major challenge, especially by systemic administration. We have developed a highly efficient method for in vivo gene silencing in dorsal root ganglia (DRG) by using short hairpin RNA-expressing single-stranded adeno-associated virus 9 (ssAAV9-shRNA)., Results: Intraperitoneal administration of ssAAV9-shRNA to neonatal mice resulted in highly effective and specific silencing of a target gene in DRG. We observed an approximately 80% reduction in target mRNA in the DRG, and 74.7% suppression of the protein was confirmed by Western blot analysis. There were no major side effects, and the suppression effect lasted for more than three months after the injection of ssAAV9-shRNA., Conclusions: Although we previously showed substantial inhibition of target gene expression in DRG via intrathecal ssAAV9-shRNA administration, here we succeeded in inhibiting target gene expression in DRG neurons via intraperitoneal injection of ssAAV9-shRNA. AAV9-mediated delivery of shRNA will pave the way for creating animal models for investigating the molecular biology of the mechanisms of pain and sensory ganglionopathies.
