Influence of metamagnetism on superconductivity is studied for the field along an easy $a$-axis by AC magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in UTe$_2$. The improvement of crystal quality leads to an upward curvature of $T_c$($B$) above 6 T, that results in a largely enhanced upper critical field of 12 T. The entropy analysis also shows a metamagnetic crossover around 6 T. The sharp negative peak in MCE below $T_c$ indicates that the crossover becomes a transition of first-order character in the superconducting state. Our results shows that metamagnetism induces a transition inside the superconducting phase and stabilizes the superconductivity for the field along the easy axis., Comment: Submitted to PRL

Beam halo is one of the crucial issues limiting the machine performance and causing radioactivation in high-intensity accelerators. A clear picture of beam-halo formation is of great importance for successful suppression of the undesired beam loss. We present numerical and experimental studies of transverse and longitudinal halos in the KEK Accelerator Test Facility. The fair accordance between predictions and observations in various conditions indicates that the Touschek scattering is the dominant mechanism forming the horizontal and momentum halos.

A high-precision intra-bunch-train beam orbit feedback correction system has been developed and tested in the ATF2 beamline of the Accelerator Test Facility at the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization in Japan. The system uses the vertical position of the bunch measured at two beam position monitors (BPMs) to calculate a pair of kicks which are applied to the next bunch using two upstream kickers, thereby correcting both the vertical position and trajectory angle. Using trains of two electron bunches separated in time by 187.6~ns, the system was optimised so as to stabilize the beam offset at the feedback BPMs to better than 350~nm, yielding a local trajectory angle correction to within 250~nrad. The quality of the correction was verified using three downstream witness BPMs and the results were found to be in agreement with the predictions of a linear lattice model used to propagate the beam trajectory from the feedback region. This same model predicts a corrected beam jitter of c.~1~nm at the focal point of the accelerator. Measurements with a beam size monitor at this location demonstrate that reducing the trajectory jitter of the beam by a factor of 4 also reduces the increase in the measured beam size as a function of beam charge by a factor of c.~1.6., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a TeV-scale high-luminosity linear $e^+e^-$ collider under development at CERN. Following the CLIC conceptual design published in 2012, this report provides an overview of the CLIC project, its current status, and future developments. It presents the CLIC physics potential and reports on design, technology, and implementation aspects of the accelerator and the detector. CLIC is foreseen to be built and operated in stages, at centre-of-mass energies of 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV and 3 TeV, respectively. CLIC uses a two-beam acceleration scheme, in which 12 GHz accelerating structures are powered via a high-current drive beam. For the first stage, an alternative with X-band klystron powering is also considered. CLIC accelerator optimisation, technical developments and system tests have resulted in an increased energy efficiency (power around 170 MW) for the 380 GeV stage, together with a reduced cost estimate at the level of 6 billion CHF. The detector concept has been refined using improved software tools. Significant progress has been made on detector technology developments for the tracking and calorimetry systems. A wide range of CLIC physics studies has been conducted, both through full detector simulations and parametric studies, together providing a broad overview of the CLIC physics potential. Each of the three energy stages adds cornerstones of the full CLIC physics programme, such as Higgs width and couplings, top-quark properties, Higgs self-coupling, direct searches, and many precision electroweak measurements. The interpretation of the combined results gives crucial and accurate insight into new physics, largely complementary to LHC and HL-LHC. The construction of the first CLIC energy stage could start by 2026. In circular colliders, as well as in damping rings and synchrotron radiation light sources, beam halo is one of the critical issues limiting the performance as well as potentially causing component damage and activation. It is imperative to clearly understand the mechanisms that lead to halo formation and to test the available theoretical models. Elastic beam-gas scattering can drive particles to large oscillation amplitudes and be a potential source of beam halo. In this paper, numerical estimation and Monte Carlo simulations of this process at the ATF of KEK are presented. Experimental measurements of beam halo in the ATF2 beam line using a diamond sensor detector are also described, which clearly demonstrates the influence of the beam-gas scattering process on the transverse halo distribution.

Major construction and initial-phase operation of a second-generation gravitational-wave detector KAGRA has been completed. The entire 3-km detector is installed underground in a mine in order to be isolated from background seismic vibrations on the surface. This allows us to achieve a good sensitivity at low frequencies and high stability of the detector. Bare-bones equipment for the interferometer operation has been installed and the first test run was accomplished in March and April of 2016 with a rather simple configuration. The initial configuration of KAGRA is named {\it iKAGRA}. In this paper a study on a fusion reactor core is presented in heavy ion inertial fusion (HIF), including the heavy ion beam (HIB) transport in a fusion reactor, a HIB interaction with a background gas, reactor cavity gas dynamics, the reactor gas backflow to the beam lines, and a HIB fusion reactor design. The HIB has remarkable preferable features to release the fusion energy in inertial fusion: in particle accelerators HIBs are generated with a high driver efficiency of ~30-40%, and the HIB ions deposit their energy inside of materials. Therefore, a requirement for the fusion target energy gain is relatively low, that would be ~50 to operate a HIF fusion reactor with a standard energy output of 1GW of electricity. In a fusion reactor the HIB charge neutralization is needed for a ballistic HIB transport. Multiple mechanical shutters would be installed at each HIB port at the reactor wall to stop the blast waves and the chamber gas backflow, so that the accelerator final elements would be protected from the reactor gas contaminant. We investigate the anisotropic spin motive force in $\alpha$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$, which is a multi-layered massless Dirac fermion system under pressure. Assuming the interlayer antiferromagnetic interaction and the interlayer anisotropic ferromagnetic interaction, we numerically examine the spin ordered state of the ground state using the steepest descent method. The anisotropic interaction leads to the anisotropic spin ordered state. We calculate the spin motive force produced by the anisotropic spin texture. ATF2 is a final-focus test beam line which aims to focus the low emittance beam from the ATF damping ring to a vertical size of about 37 nm and to demonstrate nanometer level beam stability. Several advanced beam diagnostics and feedback tools are used. In December 2008, construction and installation were completed and beam commissioning started, supported by an international team of Asian, European, and U.S. scientists. Compton scattering provides one of the most promising scheme to obtain polarized positrons for the next generation of $e^-$ -- $e^+$ colliders. Moreover it is an attractive method to produce monochromatic high energy polarized gammas for nuclear applications and X-rays for compact light sources. In this framework a four-mirror Fabry-P\'erot cavity has been installed at the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF - KEK, Tsukuba, Japan) and is used to produce an intense flux of polarized gamma rays by Compton scattering \cite{ipac-mightylaser}. For electrons at the ATF energy (1.28 GeV) Compton scattering may result in a shorter lifetime due to the limited bucket acceptance. We have implemented the effect of Compton scattering on a 2D tracking code with a Monte-Carlo method. This code has been used to study the longitudinal dynamics of the electron beam at the ATF damping ring, in particular the evolution of the energy spread and the bunch length under Compton scattering. The results obtained are presented and discussed. Possible methods to observe the effect of Compton scattering on the ATF beam are proposed.

We have performed a depth profile study of thermally diffused Mn/GaAs (001) interfaces using photoemission spectroscopy combined with Ar$^+$-ion sputtering. We found that Mn ion was thermally diffused into the deep region of the GaAs substrate and completely reacted with GaAs. In the deep region, the Mn 2$p$ core-level and Mn 3$d$ valence-band spectra of the Mn/GaAs (001) sample heated to 600 $^{\circ}$C were similar to those of Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$As, zinc-blende-type MnAs dots, and/or interstitial Mn in tetrahedrally coordinated by As atoms, suggesting that the Mn 3$d$ states were essentially localized but were hybridized with the electronic states of the host GaAs. We discuss interplay of the scalar and vector diquarks which decide the characteristics of the spin polarization as functions of $p_T$ and $x_F$ in the wide kinematical range. We demonstrate a significant effect of quark masses on the pair-creation probabilities from vacuum in $pp \to \Sigma^- X$ and $\gamma p \to \Lambda X$ collisions, and also a remarkable correction induced by the diquark form factor in $ \Sigma^- p \to \Lambda X $ collision., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, talk presented at 16th International Spin Physics Symposium (SPIN2004)

We derive a simple relation for estimating the relative emittance growth in x and y due to intrabeam scattering (IBS) in electron storage rings. We show that IBS calculations for the ATF damping ring, when using the formalism of Bjorken-Mtingwa, a modified formalism of Piwinski (where eta squared divided by beta has been replaced by the dispersion invariant), or a simple high-energy approximate formula all give results that agree well. Comparing theory, including the effect of potential well bunch lengthening, with a complete set of ATF steady-state beam size vs. current measurements we find reasonably good agreement for energy spread and horizontal emittance. The measured vertical emittance, however, is larger than theory in both offset (zero current emittance) and slope (emittance change with current). The slope error indicates measurement error and/or additional current-dependent physics at the ATF; the offset error, that the assumed Coulomb log is correct to within a factor of 1.75., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, .bbl file

Taking into account both random impurity distribution and thermal fluctuations of localized spins, we have performed a model calculation for the carrier (hole) state in Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$As by using the coherent potential approximation (CPA). The result reveals that a {\it p}-hole in the band tail of Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$As is not like a free carrier but is rather virtually bounded to impurity sites. The carrier spin strongly couples to the localized {\it d} spins on Mn ions. The hopping of the carrier among Mn sites causes the ferromagnetic ordering of the localized spins through the double-exchange mechanism. The Curie temperature obtained by using conventional parameters agrees well with the experimental result., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

At the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) at KEK intrabeam scattering (IBS) is a strong effect for an electron machine. It is an effect that couples all dimensions of the beam, and in April 2000, over a short period of time, all dimensions were measured as functions of current. In this report we derive a simple relation for the growth rates of emittances due to IBS. We apply the theories of Bjorken-Mtingwa, Piwinski, and a formula due to Raubenheimer to the ATF parameters, and find that the results all agree (if in Piwinski's formalism we replace the dispersion squared over beta by the dispersion invariant). Finally, we compare theory, including the effect of potential well bunch lengthening, with the April 2000 measurements, and find reasonably good agreement in the energy spread and horizontal emittance dependence on current. The vertical emittance measurement, however, implies that either: there is error in the measurement (equivalent to an introduction of 0.6% x-y coupling error), or the effect of intrabeam scattering is stronger than predicted (35% stronger in growth rates)., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, Presented at IEEE Particle Accelerator Conference

In April 2000 the single bunch energy spread, bunch length, horizontal emittance, and vertical emittance were measured as functions of current in KEK's ATF damping ring. In this report the measurement results are analyzed in light of intrabeam scattering theory. The measurements are found to be relatively consistent with theory, although the measured effects appear to be stronger than theory. In addition, the factor of 3 growth in vertical emittance at a current of 3 mA does not seem to be supported., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, SLAC-AP-135

Analyzing powers in inclusive pion production in high energy transversely polarized proton-proton collisions are studied theoretically in the framework of the quark recombination model. Calculations by assuming the SU(6) spin-flavor symmetry for the nucleon structure disagree with the experiments. We solve this difficulty by taking into account the %We overcome this difficulty by taking into account the realistic spin distribution functions of the nucleon, which differs from the SU(6) expectation at large $x$, %but coincides with a perturbative QCD constraint on the ratio of the unpolarized valence distributions, $u/d \to 5$ as $x \to 1$. We also discuss the kaon spin asymmetry and find $A_N(K^+) = -A_N(K^0)$ in the polarized proton-proton collisions at large $x_F$., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, latex

The double exchange (DE) model with quantum local spins S is studied; an equation of motion approach is used and decoupling approximations analogous to Hubbard's are made. Our approximate one-electron Green function G is exact in the atomic limit of zero bandwidth for all S and band filling n, and as n->0 reduces to a dynamical coherent potential approximation (CPA) due to Kubo; we regard our approximation as a many-body generalisation of Kubo's CPA. G is calculated self-consistently for general S in the paramagnetic state and for S=1/2 in a state of arbitrary magnetization. The electronic structure is investigated and four bands per spin are obtained centred on the atomic limit peaks of the spectral function. A resistivity formula appropriate to the model is derived from the Kubo formula and the paramagnetic state resistivity rho is calculated; insulating states are correctly obtained at n=0 and n=1 for strong Hund coupling. Our prediction for rho is much too small to be consistent with experiments on manganites so we agree with Millis et al that the bare DE model is inadequate. We show that the agreement with experiment obtained by Furukawa is due to his use of an unphysical density of states., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, submitted to J. Phys.: Condens. Matter

This paper is a brief review of our recent studies concerning on magnetism and electronic states of lattice systems with Hund coupling. First we examined the effectiveness of the Hund coupling in realizing ferromagnetism in the doubly degenerate Hubbard model. One- and infinite-dimensional systems were studied and thereby dimensional dependence was discussed. In quarter-filled systems the insulating ferromagnetic state accompanied by alternating orbital order was found stable. In more-than-quarter filling cases metallic ferromagnetism is stabilized by the ``double exchange mechanism''. These results are common to one and infinite dimensions. In less-than-quarter filling cases the ferromagnetic ground state is stable in one dimension but not in infinite dimensions. Secondly we examined the electronic states and the resistivity in the double exchange model by using the one-particle Green function. The splitting and narrowing of the one-particle spectrum due to the Hund coupling were clarified in the framework of a single-site approximation. We examine the ground state of a Heisenberg model with arbitrary spin S on a one-dimensional lattice composed of diamond-shaped units. A unit includes two types of antiferromagnetic exchange interactions which frustrate each other. The system undergoes phase changes when the ratio $\lambda$ between the exchange parameters varies. In some phases, strong frustration leads to larger local structures or clusters of spins than a dimer. We prove for arbitrary S that there exists a phase with four-spin cluster states, which was previously found numerically for a special value of $\lambda$ in the S=1/2 case.
