The first very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) detections at 870$\mu$m wavelength (345$\,$GHz frequency) are reported, achieving the highest diffraction-limited angular resolution yet obtained from the surface of the Earth, and the highest-frequency example of the VLBI technique to date. These include strong detections for multiple sources observed on inter-continental baselines between telescopes in Chile, Hawaii, and Spain, obtained during observations in October 2018. The longest-baseline detections approach 11$\,$G$\lambda$ corresponding to an angular resolution, or fringe spacing, of 19$\mu$as. The Allan deviation of the visibility phase at 870$\mu$m is comparable to that at 1.3$\,$mm on the relevant integration time scales between 2 and 100$\,$s. The detections confirm that the sensitivity and signal chain stability of stations in the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) array are suitable for VLBI observations at 870$\mu$m. Operation at this short wavelength, combined with anticipated enhancements of the EHT, will lead to a unique high angular resolution instrument for black hole studies, capable of resolving the event horizons of supermassive black holes in both space and time., Comment: Corresponding author: S. Instruments for gamma-ray astronomy at Very High Energies ($E>100\,{\rm GeV}$) have traditionally derived their scientific results through proprietary data and software. Data standardisation has become a prominent issue in this field both as a requirement for the dissemination of data from the next generation of gamma-ray observatories and as an effective solution to realise public data legacies of current-generation instruments. Specifications for a standardised gamma-ray data format have been proposed as a community effort and have already been successfully adopted by several instruments. We present the first production of standardised data from the Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescopes. We converted $166\,{\rm h}$ of observations from different sources and validated their analysis with the open-source software Gammapy. We consider six data sets representing different scientific and technical analysis cases and compare the results obtained analysing the standardised data with open-source software against those produced with the MAGIC proprietary data and software. Aiming at a systematic production of MAGIC data in this standardised format, we also present the implementation of a database-driven pipeline automatically performing the MAGIC data reduction from the calibrated down to the standardised data level. In all the cases selected for the validation, we obtain results compatible with the MAGIC proprietary software, both for the manual and for the automatic data productions. Part of the validation data set is also made publicly available, thus representing the first large public release of MAGIC data. Recently, robust reinforcement learning (RL) methods against input observation have garnered significant attention and undergone rapid evolution due to RL's potential vulnerability. Although these advanced methods have achieved reasonable success, there have been two limitations when considering adversary in terms of long-term horizons. First, the mutual dependency between the policy and its corresponding optimal adversary limits the development of off-policy RL algorithms; although obtaining optimal adversary should depend on the current policy, this has restricted applications to off-policy RL. Second, these methods generally assume perturbations based only on the $L_p$-norm, even when prior knowledge of the perturbation distribution in the environment is available. We here introduce another perspective on adversarial RL: an f-divergence constrained problem with the prior knowledge distribution. From this, we derive two typical attacks and their corresponding robust learning frameworks. The evaluation of robustness is conducted and the results demonstrate that our proposed methods achieve excellent performance in sample-efficient off-policy RL., Comment: 33 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables

Learning from label proportions (LLP) is a kind of weakly supervised learning that trains an instance-level classifier from label proportions of bags, which consist of sets of instances without using instance labels. A challenge in LLP arises when the number of instances in a bag (bag size) is numerous, making the traditional LLP methods difficult due to GPU memory limitations. This study aims to develop an LLP method capable of learning from bags with large sizes. In our method, smaller bags (mini-bags) are generated by sampling instances from large-sized bags (original bags), and these mini-bags are used in place of the original bags. However, the proportion of a mini-bag is unknown and differs from that of the original bag, leading to overfitting. To address this issue, we propose a perturbation method for the proportion labels of sampled mini-bags to mitigate overfitting to noisy label proportions. This perturbation is added based on the multivariate hypergeometric distribution, which is statistically modeled. Additionally, loss weighting is implemented to reduce the negative impact of proportions sampled from the tail of the distribution. Experimental results demonstrate that the proportion label perturbation and loss weighting achieve classification accuracy comparable to that obtained without sampling. A tight-binding model for $e_g$ orbitals on a simple cubic lattice with finite thickness is investigated. The hopping integrals for nearest-neighboring sites are considered. We examine the electronic band structures for systems with (001), (110), and (111) surfaces. Electronic states well localized around the surfaces are found for the (110) and (111) surfaces. In particular, the surface state is flat and extends in the entire Brillouin zone for the (111) surface, provided the bulk band projected onto the surface Brillouin zone is gapped. This paper presents a novel event camera simulation system fully based on physically based Monte Carlo path tracing with adaptive path sampling. The adaptive sampling performed in the proposed method is based on a statistical technique, hypothesis testing for the hypothesis whether the difference of logarithmic luminances at two distant periods is significantly larger than a predefined event threshold. To this end, our rendering system collects logarithmic luminances rather than raw luminance in contrast to the conventional rendering system imitating conventional RGB cameras. Then, based on the central limit theorem, we reasonably assume that the distribution of the population mean of logarithmic luminance can be modeled as a normal distribution, allowing us to model the distribution of the difference of logarithmic luminance as a normal distribution. Then, using Student's t-test, we can test the hypothesis and determine whether to discard the null hypothesis for event non-occurrence. When we sample a sufficiently large number of path samples to satisfy the central limit theorem and obtain a clean set of events, our method achieves significant speed up compared to a simple approach of sampling paths uniformly at every pixel. To our knowledge, we are the first to simulate the behavior of event cameras in a physically accurate manner using an adaptive sampling technique in Monte Carlo path tracing, and we believe this study will contribute to the development of computer vision applications using event cameras., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, Presented at ICCP 2024

We consider a total variation type energy which measures the jump discontinuities different from usual total variation energy. Such a type of energy is obtained as a singular limit of the Kobayashi-Warren-Carter energy with minimization with respect to the order parameter. We consider the Rudin-Osher-Fatemi type energy by replacing relaxation term by this type of total variation energy. We show that all minimizers are piecewise constant if the data is continuous in one-dimensional setting. Moreover, the number of jumps is bounded by an explicit constant involving a constant related to the fidelity. This is quite different from conventional Rudin-Osher-Fatemi energy where a minimizer must have no jump if the data has no jumps. In this paper we classify and construct differential symmetry breaking operators $\mathbb{D}$ from a line bundle over the real projective space $\mathbb{R}\mathbb{P}^n$ to a vector bundle over $\mathbb{R}\mathbb{P}^{n-1}$. We further determine the factorization identities of $\mathbb{D}$ and the branching laws of the corresponding generalized Verma modules of $\mathfrak{sl}(n+1,\mathbb{C})$. By utilizing the factorization identities, the $SL(n,\mathbb{R})$-representations realized on the image $\text{Im}(\mathbb{D})$ are also investigated., Comment: 52 pages

We investigate the complex conductivity of superconductors under a DC bias based on the Keldysh-Eilenberger formalism of nonequilibrium superconductivity. This framework allows us to account for the Higgs mode and impurity scattering self-energy corrections, which are known to significantly impact the complex conductivity under a bias DC, especially near the resonance frequency of the Higgs mode. The purpose of this paper is to explore the effects of these contributions on the low-frequency complex conductivity relevant to superconducting device technologies. Our approach enables us to derive the complex conductivity formula for superconductors ranging from clean to dirty limits, applicable to any bias DC strength. Our calculations reveal that the Higgs mode and impurity scattering self-energy corrections significantly affect the complex conductivity even at low frequencies, relevant to superconducting device technologies. Specifically, we find that the real part of the low-frequency complex conductivity exhibits a bias-dependent reduction up to \(\hbar \omega \sim 0.1\), a much higher frequency than previously considered. This finding allows for the suppression of dissipation in devices by tuning the bias DC. Additionally, through the calculation of the imaginary part of the complex conductivity, we evaluate the bias-dependent kinetic inductance for superconductors ranging from clean to dirty limits. The bias dependence becomes stronger as the mean free path decreases. Our dirty-limit results coincide with previous studies based on the so-called slow experiment scenario. This widely used scenario can be understood as a phenomenological implementation of the Higgs mode into the kinetic inductance calculation, now justified by our calculation based on the robust theory of nonequilibrium superconductivity, which microscopically treats the Higgs mode contribution., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures. It is pointed out that millimeter-wave vortex may contribute an efficient plasma heating since it was found that the millimeter-wave vortex can propagate in magnetized plasma even in which the normal plane wave is in cut-off condition. Then, it was assumed that the vortex field was the Laguerre-Gaussian (L-G) mode which is free-space solution, but the generation and stable propagation of the L-G mode vortex are not easy in the millimeter frequency range. On the other hand, it is known that millimeter-wave hybrid mode of cylindrical corrugated waveguide has also vortex property. Context: There are currently three pulsars firmly detected by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs), two of them reaching TeV energies, challenging models of very-high-energy (VHE) emission in pulsars. More precise observations are needed to better characterize pulsar emission at these energies. The LST-1 is the prototype of the Large-Sized Telescope, that will be part of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO). Its improved performance over previous IACTs makes it well suited for studying pulsars. Aims: To study the Crab pulsar emission with the LST-1, improving and complementing the results from other telescopes. These observations can also be used to characterize the potential of the LST-1 to study other pulsars and detect new ones. Methods: We analyzed a total of $\sim$103 hours of gamma-ray observations of the Crab pulsar conducted with the LST-1 in the period from September 2020 to January 2023. The observations were carried out at zenith angles less than 50 degrees. A new analysis of the Fermi-LAT data was also performed, including $\sim$14 years of observations. Results: The Crab pulsar phaseogram, long-term light-curve, and phase-resolved spectra are reconstructed with the LST-1 from 20 GeV to 450 GeV for P1 and up to 700 GeV for P2. The pulsed emission is detected with a significance of 15.2$\sigma$. The two characteristic emission peaks of the Crab pulsar are clearly detected (>10$\sigma$), as well as the so-called bridge emission (5.7$\sigma$). We find that both peaks are well described by power laws, with spectral indices of $\sim$3.44 and $\sim$3.03 respectively. The joint analysis of Fermi-LAT and LST-1 data shows a good agreement between both instruments in the overlapping energy range. Prediction of climate tipping is challenging due to the lack of recent observation of actual climate tipping. Despite many previous efforts to accurately predict the existence and timing of climate tippings under specific climate scenarios, the predictability of climate tipping, the necessary conditions under which climate tipping can be predicted, has yet to be explored. In this study, the predictability of climate tipping is analyzed by Observation System Simulation Experiment (OSSE), in which the value of observation for prediction is assessed through the idealized experiment of data assimilation, using a simplified dynamic vegetation model and an Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) two box model. We find that the ratio of internal variability to observation error, or signal-to-noise ratio, should be large enough to accurately predict climate tippings. When observation can accurately resolve the internal variability of the system, assimilating these observations into process-based models can effectively improve the skill of predicting climate tippings. Our quantitative estimation of required observation accuracy to predict climate tipping implies that the existing observation network is not always sufficient to accurately project climate tipping.

The Lorentz Invariance Violation (LIV), a proposed consequence of certain quantum gravity (QG) scenarios, could instigate an energy-dependent group velocity for ultra-relativistic particles. This energy dependence, although suppressed by the massive QG energy scale $E_\mathrm{QG}$, expected to be on the level of the Planck energy $1.22 \times 10^{19}$ GeV, is potentially detectable in astrophysical observations. In this scenario, the cosmological distances traversed by photons act as an amplifier for this effect. By leveraging the observation of a remarkable flare from the blazar Mrk\,421, recorded at energies above 100 GeV by the MAGIC telescopes on the night of April 25 to 26, 2014, we look for time delays scaling linearly and quadratically with the photon energies. Using for the first time in LIV studies a binned-likelihood approach we set constraints on the QG energy scale. For the linear scenario, we set $95\%$ lower limits $E_\mathrm{QG}>2.7\times10^{17}$ GeV for the subluminal case and $E_\mathrm{QG}> 3.6 \times10^{17}$ GeV for the superluminal case. For the quadratic scenario, the $95\%$ lower limits for the subluminal and superluminal cases are $E_\mathrm{QG}>2.6 \times10^{10}$ GeV and $E_\mathrm{QG}>2.5\times10^{10}$ GeV, respectively.

To determine crystal structures from an X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern containing multiple unknown phases, a data-assimilated crystal growth (DACG) simulation method has been developed. The XRD penalty function selectively stabilizes the structures in the experimental data, promoting their grain growth during simulated annealing. Since the XRD pattern is calculated as the Fourier transform of the pair distribution function, the DACG simulation can be performed without prior determination of the lattice parameters. We applied it to C (graphite and diamond) and SiO$_2$ (low-quartz and low-cristobalite) systems, demonstrating that the DACG simulation successfully reproduced multiple crystal structures.

The partition problem is a well-known basic NP-complete problem. We mainly consider the optimization version of it in this paper. The problem has been investigated from various perspectives for a long time and can be solved efficiently in practice. Hence, we might say that the only remaining task is to decide whether the problem can be solved in polynomial time in the number $n$ of given integers. We propose two partially ordered sets (posets) and present a novel methodology for solving the partition problem. The first poset is order-isomorphic to a well-known poset whose structures are related to the solutions of the subset sum problem, while the second is a subposet of the first and plays a crucial role in this paper. We first show several properties of the two posets, such as size, height and width (the largest size of a subset consisting of incomparable elements). Both widths are the same and $O(2^n / n^{3/2})$ for $n$ congruent to $0$ or $3$ (mod $4$). This fact indicates the hardness of the partition problem. We then prove that in general all the candidate solutions correspond to the elements of the second poset, whose size is $2^{n} - 2 \binom{n}{\lfloor n/2 \rfloor}$. Since a partition corresponds to two elements of the poset, the number of the candidate partitions is half of it, that is, $2^{n-1} - \binom{n}{\lfloor n/2 \rfloor}$. We finally prove that the candidate solutions can be reduced based on the partial order. In particular, we give several polynomially solvable cases by considering the minimal elements of the second poset. Our approach offers a valuable tool for structural analysis of the partition problem and provides a new perspective on the P versus NP problem., Comment: 16 pages

We present follow-up spectroscopy on a protocluster candidate selected from the wide-field imaging of the Hyper SuprimeCam Subaru Strategic Programme. The target protocluster candidate was identified as a $4.5\sigma$ overdense region of $g$-dropout galaxies, and the redshifts of $g$-dropout galaxies are determined by detecting their Ly$\alpha$ emission. Thirteen galaxies, at least, are found to be clustering in the narrow redshift range of $\Delta z<0.05$ at $z=3.699$. This is clear evidence of the presence of a protocluster in the target region. Following the discovery of the protocluster at $z=3.699$, the physical properties and three-dimensional distribution of its member galaxies are investigated. Based on spectroscopically-confirmed $g$-dropout galaxies, we find an overabundance of rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) bright galaxies in the protocluster. The UV brightest protocluster member turns out to be an active galactic nucleus, and the other UV brighter members tend to show smaller Ly$\alpha$ equivalent widths than field counterparts. The member galaxies tend to densely populate near the centre of the protocluster, but the separation from the nearest neighbour rather than the distance from the centre of the protocluster is more tightly correlated to galaxy properties, implying that the protocluster is still in an early phase of cluster formation and only close neighbours have a significant impact on the physical properties of protocluster members. The number density of massive galaxies, selected from an archival photometric-redshift catalogue, is higher near the centre of the protocluster, while dusty starburst galaxies are distributed on the outskirts. These observational results suggest that the protocluster consists of multiple galaxy populations, whose spatial distributions may hint at the developmental phase of the galaxy cluster., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, submitted to MNRAS

A tight-binding model for $e_g$ orbitals on a square lattice is investigated. We consider only the nearest-neighbor hopping and the model is characterized by two hopping parameters, $t_1$ and $t_2$. There are Dirac points in the electronic band structure and the type of the Dirac points (type-I or type-II) depends on the ratio $t_2/t_1$. For the case of the type-I Dirac points, edge states appear for a lattice with edges perpendicular to the $[11]$ direction. The edge states at a certain momentum along the edges have octupole moments with opposite signs between the right and left edges. Thus, these edge states can be called helical octupolar edge states. GRS 1734-292 is a radio-quiet galaxy, exhibiting neither intense starburst nor jet activities. However, Fermi-LAT detected this object in the GeV band. The origin of non-thermal activity in this Seyfert galaxy is an intriguing question. We report Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of GRS 1734-292 at frequencies of 97.5, 145, and 225 GHz. These observations confirmed the millimeter excess within the central <100 pc region and its time variability based on two separate observations conducted four days apart. The timescale of variability aligns with the light crossing time for a compact source smaller than <100 Schwarzschild radius. If we take into account the power-law synchrotron emission originating from the corona (i.e., the hot plasma located above the accretion disk), the millimeter spectrum indicates the coronal magnetic field of ~10 G and the size of ~10 Schwarzschild radius. An alternative explanation for this millimeter emission could be synchrotron and free-free emission from disk winds (i.e., fast wide-opening angle outflows from the disk) with the size of ~10 pc, although it may be difficult to explain the fast variability. Future millimeter observations with higher resolution (~0.01") will enable the differentiation between these two scenarios. We study the duality between the ABJ(M) theory at Chern-Simons level $k=4$ and the orientifold ABJ theory at Chern-Simons level $k=1$ by using the $S^{3}$ partition function. The partition function can be computed using the supersymmetric localization in terms of a matrix model, and we derive an ideal Fermi gas system by applying the Fermi gas formalism to the matrix model. By using this formalism, we show that the matrix model can be embedded in the partition function of $\hat{A}_{3}$ or $\hat{D}_{3}$ quiver theories, and the equality of these quiver theories, which comes from $\hat{A}_{3}=\hat{D}_{3}$, leads to exact relations of the matrix models. These exact relations can be used to check the identification of the flavor symmetries. We construct the Fermi gas formalism for the partition function of supersymmetric Chern-Simons theories with affine $D$-type quiver diagrams with non-uniform ranks of the gauge groups and Fayet-Illiopoulos parameters by two different approaches: the open string formalism and the closed string formalism. In the closed string formalism approach, we find a novel connection between the partition function of this theory and the partition function of a four-nodes circular quiver supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory. We also studied a symmetry of a density matrix appeared in the closed string formalism. We further calculate the exact values of the partition function for finite $N$, with which we identified the exponent of the leading non-perturbative effect in $1/N$ corresponding to the worldsheet instantons in the circular quiver supersymmetric Chern-Simons theories., Comment: 47 pages, 11 figures

Towards a spin-based quantum microwave-optical photon transducer, we demonstrate a low-loss dielectric microwave resonator with an internal quality factor of $2.30\times10^4$ while accommodating optical apertures with a diameter of $8\, \mathrm{mm}$. The two seemingly conflicting requirements, high quality factor and large optical apertures, are satisfied thanks to the large dielectric constant of rutile ($\mathrm{TiO_2}$). The quality factor is limited by radiation loss, and we confirmed by numerical simulation that this dielectric resonator can achieve a quality factor exceeding $10^6$ by extending the height of the resonator enclosure. Using this resonator, we performed both continuous-wave (cw) and pulse electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy on 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) crystalline powder and P1 centers in a diamond crystal in a dilution refrigerator. The cw ESR spectroscopy demonstrated high-cooperativity and strong spin-resonator coupling with the DPPH and P1 centers respectively, while the pulse ESR spectroscopy successfully measured longitudinal and transverse relaxation times.

In {\delta}-Ag2/3V2O5 with charge degrees of freedom in V, it is known that the charge ordering state and physical properties of V that appear at low temperatures depend strongly on the ordering state of Ag. In this study, we focused on the Ag ions in the interlayer and studied the structure using synchrotron radiation powder diffraction in dependence on temperature. We found that when the sample is slowly cooled from room temperature and ordering occurs at the Ag sites, V4+/V5+ charge ordering of V and subsequent V4+-V4+ structural dimers are produced. Although quenching the sample from room temperature suppresses the ordering of Ag, annealing at around 160 K promotes partial ordering of Ag and allows a metastable phase to be realized. This metastable phase is maintained even when the temperature is lowered again, producing a remarkable change in low-temperature properties. These results indicate that the ordered state of Ag, which is the key to control the charge-ordered state and physical properties, can be controlled by low-temperature annealing. The results of this study may provide a methodology for the realization of metastable states in a wide range of material groups of vanadium compounds, where competition among various charge ordered states underlies the physical properties., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Although the MeV gamma-ray band is a promising energy-band window in astrophysics, the current situation of MeV gamma-ray astronomy significantly lags behind those of the other energy bands in angular resolution and sensitivity. An electron-tracking Compton camera (ETCC), a next-generation MeV detector, is expected to revolutionize the situation. An ETCC tracks each Compton-recoil electron with a gaseous electron tracker and determines the incoming direction of each gamma-ray photon; thus, it has a strong background rejection power and yields a better angular resolution than classical Compton cameras. Here, we study ETCC events in which the Compton-recoil electrons do not deposit all energies to the electron tracker but escape and hit the surrounding pixel scintillator array (PSA). We developed an analysis method for this untapped class of events and applied it to laboratory and simulation data. We found that the energy spectrum obtained from the simulation agreed with that of the actual data within a factor of 1.2. We then evaluated the detector performance using the simulation data. The angular resolution for the new-class events was found to be twice as good as in the previous study at the energy range 1.0--2.0~MeV, where both analyses overlap. We also found that the total effective area is dominated by the contribution of the double-hit events above an energy of 1.5~MeV. Notably, applying this new method extends the sensitive energy range with the ETCC from 0.2--2.1 MeV in the previous studies to up to 3.5~MeV. Adjusting the PSA dynamic range should improve the sensitivity in even higher energy gamma-rays. Monochromatic gamma-ray signals constitute a potential smoking gun signature for annihilating or decaying dark matter particles that could relatively easily be distinguished from astrophysical or instrumental backgrounds. We provide an updated assessment of the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to such signals, based on observations of the Galactic centre region as well as of selected dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We find that current limits and detection prospects for dark matter masses above 300 GeV will be significantly improved, by up to an order of magnitude in the multi-TeV range. This demonstrates that CTA will set a new standard for gamma-ray astronomy also in this respect, as the world's largest and most sensitive high-energy gamma-ray observatory, in particular due to its exquisite energy resolution at TeV energies and the adopted observational strategy focussing on regions with large dark matter densities. Throughout our analysis, we use up-to-date instrument response functions, and we thoroughly model the effect of instrumental systematic uncertainties in our statistical treatment. PG 1553+113 is one of the few blazars with a convincing quasi-periodic emission in the gamma-ray band. The source is also a very high-energy (VHE; >100 GeV) gamma-ray emitter. To better understand its properties and identify the underlying physical processes driving its variability, the MAGIC Collaboration initiated a multiyear, multiwavelength monitoring campaign in 2015 involving the OVRO 40-m and Medicina radio telescopes, REM, KVA, and the MAGIC telescopes, Swift and Fermi satellites, and the WEBT network. The analysis presented in this paper uses data until 2017 and focuses on the characterization of the variability. The gamma-ray data show a (hint of a) periodic signal compatible with literature, but the X-ray and VHE gamma-ray data do not show statistical evidence for a periodic signal. In other bands, the data are compatible with the gamma-ray period, but with a relatively high p-value. The complex connection between the low and high-energy emission and the non-monochromatic modulation and changes in flux suggests that a simple one-zone model is unable to explain all the variability. Striving for higher gate fidelity is crucial not only for enhancing existing noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices but also for unleashing the potential of fault-tolerant quantum computation through quantum error correction. A recently proposed theoretical scheme, the double-transmon coupler (DTC), aims to achieve both suppressed residual interaction and a fast high-fidelity two-qubit gate simultaneously, particularly for highly detuned qubits. Harnessing the state-of-the-art fabrication techniques and a model-free pulse-optimization process based on reinforcement learning, we translate the theoretical DTC scheme into reality, attaining fidelities of 99.92% for a CZ gate and 99.98% for single-qubit gates. The performance of the DTC scheme demonstrates its potential as a competitive building block for superconducting quantum processors.

Ascertaining the number, type, and location of plant, insect, and animal species is essential for biodiversity conservation. However, comprehensively monitoring the situation only through public fixed-point surveys is challenging, and therefore information voluntarily provided by citizens assists in ascertaining the species distribution. To effectively encourage the citizens' data sharing behavior, this study proposed a prosocial incentive scheme in which, if they provide species information, donations are made to activities for saving endangered species. We conducted a field experiment with users (N=830) of a widely-used Japanese smartphone app to which they post species photos and measured the incentive's effect on their posting behavior. In addition, we measured the effect of a financial incentive scheme that provides monetary rewards for posting species photos and compared the two incentives' effects. The analyses revealed that while the prosocial incentive did not increase the number of posts on average, it did change the contents of posts, increasing the proportion of posts on rare species. On the contrary, the financial incentive statistically significantly increased the number of posts, in particular, on less rare and invasive species. Our findings suggest that the prosocial and financial incentives could stimulate different motivations and encourage different posting behaviors., Comment: 45 pages

We argue that Lee-Wick's complex ghost appearing in any higher derivative theory is stable and its asymptotic field exists. It may be more appropriate to call it ``anti-unstable" in the sense that, the more the ghost `decays' into lighter ordinary particles, the larger the probability the ghost remains as itself becomes. This is explicitly shown by analyzing the two-point functions of the ghost Heisenberg field which is obtained as an exact result in the $N\rightarrow\infty$ limit in a massive scalar ghost theory with light $O(N)$-vector scalar matter. The anti-instability is a consequence of the fact that the poles of the complex ghost propagator are located on the physical sheet in the complex plane of four-momentum squared. We consider composition orderings for linear functions of one variable. Given $n$ linear functions $f_1,\dots,f_n$ and a constant $c$, the objective is to find a permutation $\sigma$ that minimizes/maximizes $f_{\sigma(n)}\circ\dots\circ f_{\sigma(1)}(c)$. It was first studied in the area of time-dependent scheduling, and known to be solvable in $O(n\log n)$ time if all functions are nondecreasing. In this paper, we present a complete characterization of optimal composition orderings for this case, by regarding linear functions as two-dimensional vectors. We also show several interesting properties on optimal composition orderings such as the equivalence between local and global optimality. Furthermore, by using the characterization above, we provide a fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) algorithm for the composition ordering problem for general linear functions, with respect to the number of decreasing linear functions. We next deal with matrix multiplication orderings as a generalization of composition of linear functions. Given $n$ matrices $M_1,\dots,M_n\in\mathbb{R}^{m\times m}$ and two vectors $w,y\in\mathbb{R}^m$, where $m$ denotes a positive integer, the objective is to find a permutation $\sigma$ that minimizes/maximizes $w^\top M_{\sigma(n)}\dots M_{\sigma(1)} y$. The problem is also viewed as a generalization of flow shop scheduling through a limit. By this extension, we show that the multiplication ordering problem for $2\times 2$ matrices is solvable in $O(n\log n)$ time if all the matrices are simultaneously triangularizable and have nonnegative determinants, and FPT with respect to the number of matrices with negative determinants, if all the matrices are simultaneously triangularizable. As the negative side, we finally prove that three possible natural generalizations are NP-hard: 1) when $m=2$, 2) when $m\geq 3$, and 3) the target version of the problem., Comment: 38 pages

In recent years, a new generation of optical intensity interferometers has emerged, leveraging the existing infrastructure of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs). The MAGIC telescopes host the MAGIC-SII system (Stellar Intensity Interferometer), implemented to investigate the feasibility and potential of this technique on IACTs. After the first successful measurements in 2019, the system was upgraded and now features a real-time, dead-time-free, 4-channel, GPU-based correlator. These hardware modifications allow seamless transitions between MAGIC's standard very-high-energy gamma-ray observations and optical interferometry measurements within seconds. We establish the feasibility and potential of employing IACTs as competitive optical Intensity Interferometers with minimal hardware adjustments. The measurement of a total of 22 stellar diameters are reported, 9 corresponding to reference stars with previous comparable measurements, and 13 with no prior measurements. A prospective implementation involving telescopes from the forthcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory's northern hemisphere array, such as the first prototype of its Large-Sized Telescopes, LST-1, is technically viable. This integration would significantly enhance the sensitivity of the current system and broaden the UV-plane coverage. Tunable couplers in superconducting quantum computers have enabled fast and accurate two-qubit gates, with reported high fidelities over 99% in various architectures and gate implementation schemes. However, there are few tunable couplers whose performance in multi-qubit systems is clarified, except for the most widely used one: single-transmon coupler (STC). Achieving similar accuracy to isolated two-qubit systems remains challenging due to various undesirable couplings but is necessary for scalability. In this work, we numerically analyze a system of three fixed-frequency qubits coupled via two double-transmon couplers (DTCs) where nearest-neighbor qubits are highly detuned and also next nearest-neighbor ones are nearly resonant. The DTC is a recently proposed tunable coupler, which consists of two fixed-frequency transmons coupled through a common loop with an additional Josephson junction. We find that the DTC can not only reduce undesired residual couplings sufficiently, as well as in isolated two-qubits systems, but also enables implementations of 30-ns CZ gates and individual and simultaneous 10-ns $\pi/2$ pulses with fidelities over 99.99%. For comparison, we also investigate the system where the DTCs are replaced by the STCs. The results show that the DTC outperforms the STC in terms of both residual coupling suppression and gate accuracy in the above systems. From these results, we expect that the DTC architecture is promising for realizing high-performance, scalable superconducting quantum computers.
