Current climate and weather changes urged the scientific community to find ways to observe and understand the relatively rapid land-atmosphere processes related to the water cycle. The HydroSoil project, funded by the European Space Agency, was proposed to experimentally assess the use of Synthetic Aperture Radar in future short revisit time missions based on Geosynchronous Orbital platforms. This paper describes the HydroSoil facility providing continuous monitoring of an agricultural field with a 10-minute temporal resolution and a spatial resolution in the order of 1m2. Gathered data from the full Pol Ground-Based SAR are being used to investigate the capability of Geosynchronous SAR missions to retrieve soil moisture and to measure vegetation parameters. To achieve the project's objectives, intensive procurement of ground truth data encompassing continuous acquisition of relevant meteorological parameters like air humidity, temperature, precipitation wind speed and direction, pressure, and solar irradiation together with other vegetation characteristics under study has been mandatory. The different densities, sizes, and water content of two different crops, barley and corn, together with the data generated, will enable the assessment of the missions' ability to extract essential scene characteristics, such as soil moisture and crop water content, for use in future geostationary missions.

The structural determination of natural products (NPs) can be arduous due to sample heterogeneity. This often demands itera-tive purification processes and characterization of complex molecules that may only be available in miniscule quantities. Microcrystal electron diffraction (microED) has recently shown promise as a method to solve crystal structures of NPs from nanogram quantities of analyte. However, its implementation in NP discovery remains hampered by sample throughput and purity requirements akin to traditional NP-discovery workflows. In the methods described herein, we leverage the resolving power of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and the miniaturization capabilities of DNA microarray technology to address these challenges through the establishment of an NP screening platform, array electron diffraction (ArrayED). In this workflow, an array of HPLC fractions taken from crude extracts are deposited onto TEM grids in picoliter-sized droplets. This multiplexing of analytes on TEM grids enables 1200 or more unique samples to be simultaneously inserted into a TEM equipped with an autoloader. Selected area electron diffraction analysis of these microarrayed grids allows for rapid identification of crystalline metabolites. In this study, ArrayED enabled structural characterization of 14 natural products, including four novel crystal structures and two novel polymorphs, from 20 crude extracts. Moreover, we identify several chemical species that would not be detected by standard mass spectrometry (MS) or UV/Vis and crystal forms that would not be characterized using traditional methods.

Study description: Homarine and trigonelline are two blue crab urine metabolites that cause juvenile oysters to strengthen their shells are a defensive response. We evaluated the dose dependency of this response with a dose-response experiment where homarine and trigonelline concentrations (of each individual chemical and a combination of the two) spanned 5 log half-steps. Juvenile oysters were exposed to chemicals for 8 weeks and their shell strength (N) was measured and standardized to the size of the animals (mm) as a proxy for understanding this defense. Dataset: Dose response evaluation of oyster shell strengthening to varying blue crab urine concentrations, These data include measurements of juvenile oyster shell strength from a dose response experiment of varying blue crab urine concentrations conducted at Dauphin Island Sea Lab, Dauphin Island, AL in August - Oct 2022. Study description: Metabolites from blue crab urine are known to cause shell strengthening in juvenile oysters as a defensive response. Previous studies have identified several bioactive molecules in urine that induce this response in oysters, but others have yet to be identified. In the current study, an array of concentrations of blue crab urine was used to treat oyster juveniles in order to assess the dose-dependency of this response. Oysters were exposed to urine treatments for 8 weeks and their shell strength (N) was measured and standardized to the size of the animals (mm) as a proxy for understanding this defense. Dataset: Oyster shell strengthening in response to blue crab predator cues, These data include measurements of juvenile oyster shell strength from predator cue bioassay experiments conducted at Dauphin Island Sea Lab, Dauphin Island, AL between June and August of 2020. Study description: Homarine and trigonelline are two blue crab urine metabolites that cause mud crabs to seek refuge, but it is unknown whether these molecules influence other species. In the current study, homarine, trigonelline, and blue crab urine of animals fed conspecific and heterospecific diets were tested on juvenile oysters to ascertain if the same molecules known to alter mud crab behavior also affect oyster morphology. Juvenile oysters were exposed to chemicals for roughly 6 weeks and their shell strength (N) was measured and standardized to the size of the animals (mm) as a proxy for understanding this defense.
