3. Study on flame retardant properties of epoxy composites using circular economy material hydroxyapatite combined with DOPO-HQ.

Abstract

In this study, hydroxyapatite (HA) was extracted from biological waste. HA was modified by N,N-diglycidylaniline (NDY) and DOPO-HQ to obtain the flame retardant which was added to epoxy resin (EP) to prepare the composite. The flame retardancy of the composites was measured by the horizontal and vertical combustion tester (UL-94) and the limiting oxygen index (LOI), the thermal property was carried out by the thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), and the surface morphology was observed by the field emission scanning electron microscope (SEM). The UL-94 grade of pure EP is a fail grade, and the LOI value was 22%. After adding HA-NDY-DOPOHQ (weight ratio 1:2:1) 40 wt.% flame retardant, the UL-94 grade of the composites was raised to V-1, and the LOI value promoted to 28%, a total increase of 6%. Composite materials had excellent thermal stability and flame retardancy and could be used in fireproof panels for energy storage systems to prevent thermal runaway, and could also be used in building materials. 4. Preparation and characterization of electrospun silver nanowires/ZnO/PVP composite transparent conductive film.

Abstract

In this study, a silver nanowires (AgNWs)/nano-zinc oxide (ZnO)/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) film is fabricated as an alternative to indium tin oxide transparent conductive films (TCFs). AgNWs are prepared by the polyol method with PVP as a dispersant to prevent Ag nanoparticles agglomeration during AgNWs formation. Nano-ZnO is synthesized using sol–gel method. AgNWs/ZnO/PVP TCFs are prepared using the electrostatic spinning and spin coating methods for comparison. It is found that the best PVP/AgNO3 molar ratio is 3.5:1. FTIR and XRD analyses show that 500°C calcination leads to better crystallinity and purity of nano-ZnO. Four-point prober analysis indicates that the higher the AgNWs content, the lower the TCF sheet resistance. The best sheet resistance of AgNWs/ZnO/PVP TCF by the electrostatic spinning method is obtained as 81  Ω /sq, and the light transmittance is 85.3%. Moreover, in the 5-week stability test, the sheet resistance of the electrospun TCF increases by 6.17%, much lower than 24.9% of the spin coated TCF. Abstract

Recently, low cost of the printing devices and broader availability of the stock materials makes fused deposition modeling (FDM) of 3D printing prevailing in the industries. FDM methodology is still facing many engineering challenges as a result of process induced parameters such as material composition, the appropriate temperature, raster angle, specimen size and others. In this study, tensile test specimens using polylactic acid (PLA) material were printed on a RepRap 3D printer. The tensile test conducted herein complies with ASTM-D638-02a standards. The number of perimeter, raster angle, and specimen size are studied to assess their effects on tensile strength of the specimen. The results show that the tensile strength of the specimen built with 45° is greater than those built with 0°. Smaller specimens have greater strength than their counterpart of full size specimens. Results also reveal that the specimen with the 3 layers of perimeter has the lowest tensile strength. more...

Abstract

This study showed an efficient and novel way to prepare expandable graphite (EG) which is one kind of halogen-free flame retardant using the O3-hydrothermal process. The results showed the expanded volume of EG using the O3-hydrothermal process was higher than those compared to convectional liquid phase synthesis, ultrasound irradiation and hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction pattern, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to analyze the structure and confirm that EG had been prepared. Scanning electron microscope was utilized to observe the morphology of EG and char from HDPE/O3-HEG composites. Cone calorimeter, limiting oxygen index, and UL-94 were used to investigate the flame retardant property of the HDPE/O3-HEG composites and showed the HDPE/O3-HEG composite possesses excellent flame retardant property.
