3. First happiness, then meaning. A cross-cultural investigation into well-being dilemmas.

Abstract

Dilemmas in navigating between various aspects of well-being are common, but remain unexplored in psychological research. In this paper, we introduce a novel method of assessing well-being dilemmas and their dynamics. In five studies run across the United States, Poland and Japan, we studied the dilemma between the pursuit of happiness and the pursuit of meaning. Our findings revealed common trends across three countries and two research designs: while the majority prioritize happiness, a substantial segment of individuals place a higher value on meaning. Furthermore, these preferences are linked to one’s current state of well-being. As individuals attain a baseline level of both happiness and meaning, the emphasis on happiness diminishes. This suggests a hierarchical framework wherein individuals initially seek to fulfil their happiness before turning their attention to meaningful endeavors. 4. 'Better Policies for Better Lives'?: Constructive Critique of the OECD's (Mis)measure of Student Well-Being

Abstract

Facing increasing critique that PISA focuses too narrowly on cognitive achievement and human/knowledge capital, the OECD has recently shifted some of its focus to student happiness. The 2017 Students' Well-Being report distinguishes between 'happy schools' and 'unhappy schools', showing that among students who combined high performance and life satisfaction, northern European countries topped the charts. Meanwhile, students in East Asian countries including Japan, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Korea registered the lowest 'life satisfaction' scores among all participating countries. This piece points out some of the problems inherent in the OECD's recent turn to happiness, problematizing the OECD yardstick of life satisfaction. Attempting to keep the critique constructive, we suggest that the OECD may want to consider using alternative metrics, then briefly highlight one developed in East Asia from different first assumptions: the Interdependent Happiness Scale. In conclusion we flag, but cannot answer, some related educational questions concerning policy, pedagogy, and priorities for the future.

Abstract

Well-being is recognized as a fundamental human goal and a universal human aspiration. However, some cross-country studies suggest that the desirability of the most often studied concept of well-being-personal life satisfaction-varies across countries, and we know little about the desirability of other types of well-being. Extending this novel area of research, we argue that focusing on the family (as compared to the individual) as the subject of well-being may be another important distinction in how well-being is conceptualized and valued. With data collected in four countries that tend to occupy different positions in rankings of personal life satisfaction (i.e., Canada, Colombia, Japan, and Poland), we document that, irrespective of cultural context, family well-being is valued over personal well-being. 11. Is it okay to feel this way? Exploring the joint effect of emotional experiences and expectations on life satisfaction.

Abstract

This research investigates the joint effect of individual emotional experiences and societal expectations on life satisfaction. Inspired by the Affect Valuation Theory and Self-Discrepancy Theory, we explored how discrepancies between actual emotional experiences and what society believes we “ought” to feel are linked with life satisfaction. A total of 301 U.S. online participants rated their emotional experiences and societal expectations for emotions, along with measures of life satisfaction. Response surface analyses were used to assess the effect of emotional experience-norm congruence on life satisfaction. Findings revealed that the highest life satisfaction reported by individuals infrequently experiencing negative emotions but perceiving high societal expectations for these emotions, while congruence effect were not supported. These findings suggest the potential benefits of a societal shift toward greater acceptance of a wider range of negative emotions. The study may potentially stimulate interventions to enhance individuals’ life satisfaction by reconsidering societal beliefs about emotions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

13. Family First: Evidence of Consistency and Variation in the Value of Family Versus Personal Happiness Across 49 Different Cultures

Abstract

People care about their own well-being and about the well-being of their families. It is currently, however, unknown how much people tend to value their own versus their family’s well-being. A recent study documented that people value family happiness over personal happiness across four cultures. In this study, we sought to replicate this finding across a larger sample size (N = 12,819) and a greater number of countries (N = 49). We found that the strength of the idealization of family over personal happiness preference was small (average Cohen’s ds = .20, range −.02 to.48), but present in 98% of the studied countries, with statistical significance in 73% to 75%, and variance across countries <2%. We also found that the size of this effect did vary somewhat across cultural contexts. In Latin American cultures highest on relational mobility, the idealization of family over personal happiness was very small (average Cohen’s ds for Latin America = .15 and .18), while in Confucian Asia cultures lowest on relational mobility, this effect was closer to medium (ds > .40 and .30). Importantly, we did not find strong support for traditional theories in cross-cultural psychology that associate collectivism with greater prioritization of the family versus the individual; country-level individualism–collectivism was not associated with variation in the idealization of family versus individual happiness. Our findings indicate that no matter how much various populists abuse the argument of “protecting family life” to disrupt emancipation, family happiness seems to be a pan-culturally phenomenon. Family well-being is a key ingredient of social fabric across the world, and should be acknowledged by psychology and well-being researchers and by progressive movements too.

Abstract

Past research has shown that economic inequality shapes individuals’ self-construals. However, it has been unclear which dimensions of self-construal are associated with and affected by economic inequality. A correlational (Study 1: N = 264) and an experimental study (Study 2: N = 532) provided converging evidence linking perceived economic inequality with two forms of independent (vs. interdependent) self-construal: Difference from Others and SelfReliance. In Study 3 (N = 12,634) societal differences in objective economic inequality across 48 nations predicted feelings of Difference from Others, but not Self-Reliance. Importantly, we found no significant associations of economic inequality with the other six dimensions of self-construal. Our findings help extend previous results linking economic inequality to forms of “social distance.”

Abstract

We explore to what extent previously observed pan-cultural association between dimensions of self-construal and personal life satisfaction (PLS) may be moderated by three national-contextual variables: national wealth, economic inequality, and religious heritage. The results showed that Self-reliance (vs. dependence on others) predicted PLS positively in poorer countries but negatively in richer countries. Connectedness to others (vs. self-containment) predicted PLS more strongly in Protestant-heritage countries. Selfexpression (vs. harmony) predicted PLS more weakly (and nonsignificantly) in Muslim-heritage countries. In contrast, previously reported associations of self-direction (vs. reception-to-influence), consistency (vs. variability), and decontextualized (vs. contextualized) self-understanding with personal life satisfaction were not significantly moderated by these aspects of societal context. Abstract

Individualism and Collectivism (IC) is the most popular cultural dimension in psychology. Researchers suggest that countries with an individualistic culture are more developed, wealthier and experience less Human Rights violations than countries with a collectivist culture (Basabe & Ros, 2005). Some scholars suggest that the economic development fosters cultural change from the collectivism to individualism, measured by the endorsement of Self-Expression Values (Inglehart & Oyserman, 2004). However, Wasiel et al. (2023) found that Americans understand Self-Expression Values as a facet of collectivism instead of individualism. Therefore, the popularization of research showing the benefits of individualistic culture (or effect of modernization on individualism) might be misenterpreted by non-experts. In this project, we will experimentaly investigate the effects of popularizing scientific message stating that individualism/collectivism is connected to development and general well-being.

22. Different forms of societal development and perceived Agency and Communion of societies

Abstract

According to the research on Folk Theories of Social Change, modernization brings higher agency but lower communion (e.g., Kashima et al., 2009). We hypothesize that this is true for technological modernization mainly. We conceptualize that societal development may have at least three major facets: 1. social modernization (SM), 2. technological modernization (TM), and 3. economic modernization (EM). Furthermore, findings from our previous study (Krys et al., under review) suggest that conventional aims (e.g., emphasizing religious values, strong military power, demographic growth), although not particularly modernizing, may be of some importance for some people. Thus, we will also study conventional aims. Taking into account findings from our previous study (Krys et al., under review), we plan to study four different subcategories of SM: 1. SM prioritizing social inclusion (e.g., fighting with inequalities, protection of human rights, openness for new people), 2. SM prioritizing welfare (e.g., good quality education, living in freedom, eradication of poverty), 3. SM prioritizing agentic foundations of modernization (e.g., citizens living healthy long lives, democracy, safety), 4. SM prioritizing communal foundations of modernization (e.g., strong social ties, trust). We plan to study two different categories of TM: 1. industrialization (e. g., building new factories, increasing the productivity of manufacturing goods), and 2. digitalization (e. g., access to a high-speed Internet, digitization of public services, working online). All in all, we will study eight different forms of societal development: four facets of SM, two facets of TM, EM, and conventional aims, and we will measure perceived agency and communion of people living in societies described by different stages of societal development.

Abstract

In this paper, we introduce the concept of ‘societal emotional environment’: the emotional climate of a society (operationalized as the degree to which positive and negative emotions are expressed in a society). Using data collected from 12,888 participants across 49 countries, we show how societal emotional environments vary across countries and cultural clusters, and we consider the potential importance of these differences for well-being. Multilevel analyses supported a ‘double-edged sword’ model of negative emotion expression, where expression of negative emotions predicted higher life satisfaction for the expresser but lower life satisfaction for society. In contrast, partial support was found for higher societal life satisfaction in positive societal emotional environments. Our study highlights the potential utility and importance of distinguishing between positive and negative emotion expression, and adopting both individual and societal perspectives in well-being research. Abstract

In this paper, we introduce the concept of 'societal emotional environment': the emotional climate of a society (operationalized as the degree to which positive and negative emotions are expressed in a society). Using data collected from 12,888 participants across 49 countries, we show how societal emotional environments vary across countries and cultural clusters, and we consider the potential importance of these differences for well-being. Multilevel analyses supported a 'double-edged sword' model of negative emotion expression, where expression of negative emotions predicted higher life satisfaction for the expresser but lower life satisfaction for society. In contrast, partial support was found for higher societal life satisfaction in positive societal emotional environments. Our study highlights the potential utility and importance of distinguishing between positive and negative emotion expression, and adopting both individual and societal perspectives in well-being research. Abstract

Although Interdependent Happiness Scale (IHS) has been used in different socio-cultural contexts, no study has tested the measurement invariance across countries. Because previous research did not agree on the dimensionality of the scale, we primarily investigated the factorial structure of the IHS, comparing the one-factor model to three-factor, second-order, and bifactor models. We also evaluated the applicability of the IHS to Italian (N = 290) and Polish samples (students: N = 253; community: N = 241) using a multigroup confirmatory factor analysis. We investigated also whether the scale measures an aspect of happiness different from satisfaction with life. The bifactor model fitted the sample data better than alternative models in all samples. The general factor accounted for over 90% of the reliable variance in the total IHS score for all samples. Our study supported the configural and metric invariance of the bifactor model in the Italian and Polish versions of the IHS, ensuring the comparability of correlations involving the IHS scores in the two different cultures and samples. We showed that IHS is not redundant with the SWLS, although the two concepts are deeply intertwined. Abstract

Inequalities between men and women are common and well-documented. Objective indexes show that men are better positioned than women in societal hierarchies—there is no single country in the world without a gender gap. In contrast, researchers have found that the women-are-wonderful effect—that women are evaluated more positively than men overall—is also common. Cross-cultural studies on gender equality reveal that the more gender egalitarian the society is, the less prevalent explicit gender stereotypes are. Yet, because self-reported gender stereotypes may differ from implicit attitudes towards each gender, we reanalysed data collected across 44 cultures, and (a) confirmed that societal gender egalitarianism reduces the women-are-wonderful effect when it is measured more implicitly (i.e. rating the personality of men and women presented in images) and (b) documented that the social perception of men benefits more from gender egalitarianism than that of women.

45. Be careful where you smile : culture shapes judgments of intelligence and honesty of smiling individuals

Abstract

Smiling individuals are usually perceived more favorably than non-smiling ones – they are judged as happier, more attractive, competent, and friendly. These seemingly clear and obvious consequences of smiling are assumed to be culturally universal, however most of the psychological research is carried out in WEIRD societies (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic) and the influence of culture on social perception of nonverbal behavior is still understudied. Here we show that a smiling individual may be judged as less intelligent than the same non-smiling individual in cultures low on the GLOBE’s uncertainty avoidance dimension. Furthermore, we show that corruption at the societal level may undermine the prosocial perception of smiling – in societies with high corruption indicators, trust toward smiling individuals is reduced. This research fosters understanding of the cultural framework surrounding nonverbal communication processes and reveals that in some cultures smiling may lead to negative attributions.

Abstract

Since the Second World War, the dominating paradigm of societal development has focused on economic growth. While economic growth has improved the quality of human life in a variety of ways, we posit that the identification of economic growth as the primary societal goal is culture-blind because preferences for developmental pathways likely vary between societies. We argue that the cultural diversity of developmental goals and the pathways leading to these goals could be reflected in a culturally sensitive approach to assessing societal development. For the vast majority of post-materialistic societies, it is an urgent necessity to prepare culturally sensitive compasses on how to develop next, and to start conceptualizing growth in a more nuanced and culturally responsive way. Furthermore, we propose that cultural sensitivity in measuring societal growth could also be applied to existing development indicators (e.g. the Human Development Index). We call for cultural researchers, in cooperation with development economists and other social scientists, to prepare a new cultural map of developmental goals, and to create and adapt development indexes that are more culturally sensitive. This innovation could ultimately help social planners understand the diverse pathways of development and assess the degree to which societies are progressing in a self-determined and indigenously valued manner.
