Cephalopod beaks provide critical information in understanding cephalopod biology, their ecology and their role in marine ecosystems. Although mandible shape has been shown to be adaptive in many vertebrate taxa, coleoid beak shape and its possible relationships with trophic ecology and habitat use has never been investigated. This is partly due to the consensus that the diet of coleoids is not diversified enough for the beaks to reflect dietary adaptations. More recently, studies have proposed that the beaks of paralarvae of octopods, argonauts, and some squid show features that may facilitate prey ingestion, and that the diet varies during the life cycle, ranging from detritivory in paralarvae to carnivory in adults in some ommastrephid species. This suggests that the debate on the possible adaptive signal in cephalopod beaks should be revisited. Here, we investigated whether variation in cephalopod beak shape reflects ecology and/or, is driven by phylogenetic relatedness. We imaged 101 lower and 108 upper beaks in 3D belonging to 75 species of octopods and squids. Morphometric analysis shows that there is a significant but only moderate phylogenetic signal. Comparative, phylogenetically informed, analyses demonstrate that beak shape is also driven by ecology. We detected significant differences in beak shape between species inhabiting different habitats (pelagic, benthic, or demersal) and of different trophic levels. These results provide new insights into the drivers of beak shape diversity in coleoids and suggest that beak shape has evolved adaptively in relation to diet and habitat use.

International audience; Chez les ammonites, l’estimation de l’âge et du rythme de croissance des individus reste un sujet débattu. Les études proposées pour résoudre ces questions se sont toujours basées sur les éléments de croissance périodiques visibles des coquilles (stries, ornementation, septes) ou sur les compositions chimiques de la coquille externe aragonitique à faible teneur en Sr. Selon les taxons et les méthodes, les âges obtenus pour atteindre la maturité vont de 3 à 20 ans. Ces résultats ont été discutés car ils font tous intervenir des valeurs de vitesse de croissance hypothétiques ou issues de données connues pour le nautile. Les études sclérochronologiques menées sur les mollusques récents et fossiles fournissent un cadre méthodologique qui pourrait être appliqué aux mâchoires inférieures calcitiques des ammonites. Ces dernières possèdent en effet des structures de croissance (stries et incréments) bien visibles. Les observations microstructurales indiquent que des incréments de croissance fins (jusqu'à 2 μm d'épaisseur) sont bien préservés et qu'une partie de l'information paléobiologique y est conservée. Nous avons analysé l'espacement des lignes de croissance, la microstructure pour évaluer l’intensité de la diagenèse, ainsi que les variations du 18O et des rapports Mg/Ca au cours du développement. Les résultats préliminaires qui sont présentés soulèvent des questions quant à l’origine possible des variations observées et montrent que la prise en compte du mode de vie des ammonites est indispensable pour l’interprétation des résultats.

International audience; Les Nautiles sont connus dans le registre fossile à partir du Paléozoïque (Devonien). Ce groupe qui a connu des périodes de grande diversité n’est actuellement représenté que par sept espèces. A cause de cette faible diversité, et de la similarité de leurs coquilles avec celles des espèces fossiles, les nautiles sont souvent considérés comme des « fossiles vivants », suggérant que leur morphologie et leur écologie sont resté presque inchangés au cours du temps. Cette idée erronée est due à la morphologie relativement simple de la coquille, ne portant pas assez d’informations pour étudier toute la diversité des nautiles fossiles. Cela entrave la reconstruction de leurs relations phylogénétiques et toute interprétation de leur écologie passée. Les nautiles actuels sont des prédateurs et des charognards, qui détectent leurs proies grâce à un système chimiosensoriel très sensible situé dans les tentacules. Ils les ingèrent ensuite à l’aide de leur bec, capable de saisir de d’écraser des aliments solides, comme des crustacés. Ce bec est composé majoritairement de chitine et se divise en deux mâchoires, supérieure et inférieure, sur lesquelles s’insèrent les muscles masticateurs de la masse buccale, qui contrôle leurs mouvements. Au sein des céphalopodes actuels, les nautiles ont également la particularité de posséder un renforcement calcaire à l’extrémité antérieur de chaque mâchoire, le rhyncholite et le conchorhynche. Ces structures sont plus rigides que le reste du bec, et que la coquille en aragonite, et donc se fossilise bien mieux. Les rhyncholites sont particulièrement abondants dans le registre fossile à partir de la fin du Trias jusqu’à nos jours, et présentent une grande disparité, très utilisée en biostratigraphie. Cependant, le grand potentiel des rhyncholites pour la compréhension de la biologie et de l’écologie des nautiles fossiles a été jusqu’à présent négligé. En effet, seul quelques études ont tenté de relier la forme des rhyncholites à leur fonction masticatrice, et à un régime alimentaire, et seulement de manière qualitative ou à l’aide de mesures biométriques simples. Ainsi, la manière dont des différences de formes chez le rhyncholites peut entrainer des différences de fonction de l’appareil masticateur reste mal connue. Ce projet vise pour la première fois à quantifier la morphologie des rhyncholites par une approche de morphométrie géométrique, et à rechercher les liens potentiels avec leur fonction au cours des temps géologiques. Nous présentons ici les résultats préliminaires de cette étude.

International audience; The use of 3D imaging techniques is nowadays widespread in palaeontological researchand oers new opportunities to prepare demonstrative gures for publication, and tools toanimate images for communication. Although the value of 3D technologies is fully demon-strated in research, it remains poorly explored for teaching biology, geology and palaeontologyin the University undergraduate programs.We developed the project ATLAS 3D (Sorbonne Universite, FormInnov project): an in-teractive pdf of 3D objects commonly studied when teaching Natural Sciences includingpalaeontology. The transfer of research expertise to education is expected to improve theway students can learn and increase their skills. Examples of objects already available inATLAS 3D include microfossils (foraminifers), cephalopods, cnidarian, brachiopods. ATLAS3D can be used with an open access software (Adobe Acrobat Reader), allowing the user tonavigate through the object using slicing tools. The anatomical structures can be selectedand therefore viewed independently, allowing for example to highlight dierences betweenthe external skeleton/shell and internal cavities or structures. Pre-selected views can also berecorded by the teacher in order to label or comment anatomical features.At the hinge of recent research in palaeontology and museography, this tool is designed toincrease the autonomy of the students and ease the understanding of anatomy.

International audience; Assessing ammonites lifespan is a challenging issue for macroevolutionary studies. Age estimations based on growth features and chemical compositions of the low Sr aragonitic shell have been attempted on few exceptionally preserved specimens, but remain debated (Bucher et al. 1996). Compared to the aragonitic shell, the calcitic covering of the lower jaw (called aptychus) is poorly investigated although in Recent cephalopods, chitinous beaks are considered a relevant proxy for the age of the animal (Perales-Raya et al. 2014). Sclerochonological studies carried out on recent and fossil mollusks have provided a methodological framework that could be applied to ammonite lower jaws (Lartaud 2010, Bougeois 2013). Following these studies, well-preserved aptychi from the Campanian of Alabama (Mooreville Chalk Formation) were investigated in order to assess its potential for schlerochonological studies. Microstructural observations indicate that fine growth features (up to 2µm thick) are well preserved and that a part of paleobiological information is conserved. We analyzed growth lines spacing-out, microstructure, and variation of the chemical composition along the growth direction (∂18O and trace elements) in order to provide the first age estimations for ammonites obtained from non-shell structures.

International audience; External test characters of Upper Cretaceous planktonic foraminifera are commonly com-pared to those of extant species. Similarities are used to interpret their life position: globu-lar pustulose forms (Whiteinella and Muricohedbergella) are supposed to have inhabited theupper part of the water column, whereas heavier keeled species (Rotalipora and Thalmanin-nella) would have evolved below the thermocline. However, this model cannot be applied toall time intervals. Indeed, during, Paleogene forms with a well-developed keel (Morozovel-lids) were common in the upper part of the water column.With the development of non-destructive X-Ray tomography, it is now possible to qualita-tively and quantitatively characterize all the ontogenetic stages of the planktonic foraminifera.Indeed, morphological test changes and internal volumes can be precisely constrained for eachchamber. CT techniques were therefore used to study, for the rst time, the growth patternsof three well-preserved Cenomanian species (Whiteinella aprica, Rotalipora cushmani andThalmaninnella greenhornensis) from the Greenhorn Formation of the Great Plains (SouthDakota, US). The ontogenetic succession of their chambers has been compared to those ofrecent fossil species (Miocene up to Holocene) still inhabiting oceans. Surprisingly, the re-sults would show that the globular W. aprica and the keeled R. cushmani have the samegrowth pattern which is similar to the thermocline dweller Globorotalia menardii. Th. green-hornensis growth pattern is clearly dierent and belongs to the deep dwellers group.Those results are important as they will allow a better understanding of the extinction steepsof rotaliporids (Rotalipora and Thalmaninnella) during the onset of the Oceanic Anoxic Event2.
