The ability to form biofilms is a functional trait shared by many bacterial species. Biofilms provide bacteria a sheltered environment where the nutrients and oxygen gradients create a heterogeneous matrix and promote cells to differentiate their metabolism and functions according to the position they occupy inside the matrix. Species of the Microcystis genus are among the most common bloom-forming cyanobacteria. They are unicellular microorganisms able to form colonies and to reach high biomass during blooms in lakes, reservoirs and estuaries worldwide. Colonial lifestyle provides several advantages under stressing conditions, including adaptation to different light intensities, protection from toxic substances and grazing, while allowing them to grow when the nutrient supply is low. Although the biology, ecology and colony formation have been extensively recognized in Microcystis spp., the analysis of the progression from unicellular to multicellular phases in this cyanobacterium have been always addressed as individual phenotypic plasticity and rarely as a multi-specific community of interrelated microorganisms. Here, we re-interpreted the evidence coming from different studies about the Microcystis lifestyle and propose a new way to analyze the available information about this cyanobacterial group. We specifically address the characteristics shared by bacterial biofilms and Microcystis colonies and suggest that the morphological changes from single cells to colonies are due to a cascade of events leading to the formation of a multi-specific biofilm. Studying the formation of colonies using this framework would help to better understand the life cycle of Microcystis, its functional relationship with the associated microbiome and the factors triggering microcystin production, helping to design strategies for prevention and control of the blooms caused by these organisms. Taking into account the biology and the ecological strategies of Microcystis, a conceptual model of emergence and decay of these floating multi-specific biofilms is proposed.

Los resultados presentados en esta publicación se enmarcan dentro del proyecto financiado por ANII, código: ANII_FCE_2017_136372. Oceanografía biológica de Cabo Polonio: apuntes sobre investigaciones recientes ofrece una muy rápida recorrida por los orígenes de la oceanografía como área del conocimiento científico y las actividades que investigadores de la Facultad de Ciencias y del Centro Universitario Regional Este, ambos de la Universidad de la República, desarrollan en la zona marina costera de Cabo Polonio. Cabo Polonio es interesante desde diversos puntos de vista: histórico, arqueológico, sociológico, paisajístico, ecológico. Durante el siglo XX fue epicentro de la explotación de la mayor población de lobos marinos del Atlántico Sur. Rastros de ese pasado se conservan en la infraestructura de la Base que alojaba a los trabajadores: comedor-cocina, galpones y dormitorios, caldera industrial y un gran bote a remo; implementos para la faena: garrotes, cuchillas, estaqueaderos de cueros... Aún es posible encontrar en ciertos boliches o almacenes del Cabo a veteranos de aquellas lides y - con un poco de suerte - aprender sus historias. El valor paisajístico de Cabo Polonio ha impulsado el crecimiento del centro poblado gracias al influjo del turismo estival y de no pocos que llegaron de visita y decidieron quedarse. Esto plantea enormes desafíos para la conservación de un sitio que no dispone de facilidades como agua potable y saneamiento, electricidad, caminería y cuya biodiversidad - uno de sus grandes atractivos - es muy sensible a cambios en el paisaje. La biodiversidad es uno de los elementos que llevó a incluir a Cabo Polonio en el Sistema Nacional de Areas Protegidas. Sin embargo, el conocimiento de la fauna y flora marinas, así como de los procesos bio-físicos que sustentan esa biodiversidad son muy poco conocidos. El trabajo que aquí se presenta busca contribuir a dicho conocimiento e - indirectamente- al buen uso y manejo del sitio.

La clasificación basada en rasgos y grupos funcionales establecidos en la morfología del fitoplancton posibilitó una aproximación factible y objetiva en la evaluación de seis sistemas de diferente tipo, origen, morfología y condición limnológica pertenecientes a las regiones amazónica, andina y caribe de Colombia. Se estableció específicamente la relación entre las variables continuas y categóricas del fitoplancton (volumen, superficie, dimensión lineal máxima, presencia de aerótopos, mucílago, flagelo y exoesqueleto de sílice) con los parámetros limnológicos de transparencia, profundidad máxima, temperatura y concentración de iones inorgánicos. Se seleccionaron entre dos y ocho estaciones durante tres o cuatro periodos climáticos en series anuales entre el 2005 y el 2007 tomando las muestras en la zona limnética. Los taxones identificados se clasificaron en uno u otro grupo funcional basado en la morfología (GFBM) según las dimensiones morfológicas y la presencia de rasgos especializados de cada taxón. Entre los resultados más relevantes se destacó el grupo V (flagelados unicelulares de tamaño medio a grande) en ambientes poco profundos y turbios, con excepción de la llanura del Bajo Sinú en el Caribe, donde dominaba el grupo VII (colonias mucilaginosas con los lípidos y aerótopos). En los lagos profundos y de gran transparencia en montañas sobresalieron los grupos IV (tamaño medio y ausencia de rasgos especializados) y VII. Los grupos propuestos en la clasificación permitieron exponer los patrones funcionales del ensamblaje del fitoplancton y explicar significativamente su variación en respuesta a las características de los sistemas. The classification based on traits and functional groups of phytoplankton proposed by Kruk et al., (2010) allowed a feasible and objective approach in the evaluation of six tropical systems of different types, origin, shape, size and limnological condition in relation to the variation of the morphology of phytoplankton in response to the environment. This study established the morphological variability of phytoplankton associated with physical, chemical and climatic characteristics in six systems with different environmental conditions, belonging to the Amazonian, Andean and Caribbean areas of Colombia. The samples were taken in the limnetic area establishing between two and eight stations during three to four climatic periods in an annual series between 2005 and 2007. The identified taxa are included in one or another GFBM using a "script" designed by Kruk and Segura (2011). The inclusion of the groups was based on the morphological dimensions and the presence of special characteristics of each taxon. Group V excelled in shallow and turbid environments, except for the plain of the Caribbean Bajo Sinú where Group VII dominated. In the deep and high transparency lake of high mountain, the outstanding groups correspond to Group IV and Group VII. The groups proposed by the classification of Kruk et al. (2010) were useful and objective as a tool for the study of the assembly of phytoplankton because they significantly explained the variation of phytoplankton morphology in response to the environment.

Addressing ecological and evolutionary processes explaining biodiversity patterns is essential to identify the mechanisms driving community assembly. In the case of bacteria, the formation of new ecologically distinct populations or ecotypes is proposed as one of the main drivers of diversification. New ecotypes arise when mutation in key functional genes or acquisition of new metabolic pathways by horizontal gene transfer allow the population to exploit new resources, making possible their coexistence with parental population. Recently, we have reported the presence of toxic, microcystin-producing organisms from the Microcystis aeruginosa complex (MAC) through a wide environmental gradient (800 km) in South America, ranging from freshwater to estuarine-marine waters. In order to explain this finding, we hypothesize that the success of toxic organisms of MAC in such array of environmental conditions is due to the existence of ecotypes having different environmental preferences. So, we analysed the genetic diversity of microcystin-producing populations of Microcystis aeruginosa complex (MAC) by qPCR and high resolution melting analysis (HRMA) of a functional gene (mcyJ, involved in microcystin synthesis) and explored its relationship with the environmental conditions through the gradient by functional classification and regression trees (fCART). Six groups of mcyJ genotypes were distinguished and selected by different combinations of water temperature, conductivity and turbidity, determining the environmental preferences of each group. Since these groups were based on the basis of similar sequence and ecological characteristics they were defined as ecotypes of toxic MAC. Taking into account that the role of microcystins in MAC biology and ecology has not yet been elucidated, we propose that the toxin might have a role in MAC fitness that would be mainly controlled by the physical environment in a way such that the ecotypes that thrive in the riverine zone of the gradient would be more stable and less influenced by salinity fluctuations than those living at the marine limit of the estuary. These would periodically disappear or being eliminated by salinity increases, depending on the estuary dynamics. Thus, ecotypes generation would be an important mechanism allowing toxic MAC adapting to and succeed in a wide array of environmental conditions.

Las floraciones de cianobacterias tóxicas son un problema mundial. La eutrofización antrópica y la generación de embalses han promovido su desarrollo en la Cuenca del Plata, favoreciendo principalmente al complejo Microcystis aeruginosa (CMA). En este trabajo describimos las floraciones excepcionales de CMA ocurridas en el verano 2019 en la costa del Río de la Plata y Atlántica de Uruguay y discutimos sus mecanismos moduladores en base a datos biológicos, meteorológicos y oceanográficos de muestreos, imágenes satelitales y re-análisis. Las floraciones fueron extensas (Carmelo a Rocha; 500 km) y persistentes (ca.: 4 meses). En todos los casos fueron organismos del CMA con estructura genética similar y su presencia estuvo asociada a niveles cuantificables y elevados de microcistina. En base a las características oceanográficas y la similitud genética entre los organismos, se hipotetiza que las floraciones tienen un origen común, probablemente asociado a tributarios con alta carga de nutrientes y alto tiempo de residencia del agua en la Cuenca baja del Plata. Las precipitaciones extremas generaron caudales récord que transportaron las cianobacterias hasta el Río de la Plata, donde las condiciones de viento y temperatura particulares facilitaron su transporte y arribo a la costa de Rocha, llegando a ambientes de relevancia para la conservación (e.g. Laguna de Rocha).

Las macroalgas son fundamentales para los ecosistemas marinos y son muy sensibles a los cambios ambientales (por ejemplo, temperatura, salinidad). La costa atlántica uruguaya es clave para la biogeografía regional de macroalgas, transición entre la ficoflora subtropical y subantártica. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar la riqueza de especies y biomasa de macroalgas, su distribución espacial y relación con variables ambientales en puntas rocosas de la costa de Rocha (33°S; 54°O), Uruguay. Se realizaron dos muestreos (verano e invierno) en puntas rocosas de Cerro Verde (La Coronilla), Cerro Rivero (Punta del Diablo) y El Cabito (La Paloma). Mediante transectas se cubrieron distintas profundidades, midieron variables ambientales y colectaron muestras. Se identificaron en total 36 taxa (21 rodofitas, 11 clorofitas y 4 ocrofitas). La riqueza de especies y biomasa fue mayor en verano para todos los sitios con especies principalmente subtropicales, y la temperatura fue un factor clave. Las ocrofitas ocurrieron en menor frecuencia, asociadas a aguas frías y claras. Se alcanzó el 50 % del total de especies registradas para Uruguay; el complejo Ulva spp. (clorofita) fue el más frecuente. El conocimiento generado aportará al manejo de las macro-algas uruguayas retomando la línea de investigación y favoreciendo el desarrollo de trabajos futuros en el tema.
