3. Computational homogenization of non-stationary transport processes in masonry structures

Abstract

A fully coupled transient heat and moisture transport in a masonry structure is examined in this paper. Supported by several successful applications in civil engineering the nonlinear diffusion model proposed by K\"{u}nzel is adopted in the present study. A strong material heterogeneity together with a significant dependence of the model parameters on initial conditions as well as the gradients of heat and moisture fields vindicates the use of a hierarchical modeling strategy to solve the problem of this kind. Attention is limited to the classical first order homogenization in a spatial domain developed here in the framework of a two step (meso-macro) multi-scale computational scheme (FE^2 problem). Several illustrative examples are presented to investigate the influence of transient flow at the level of constituents (meso-scale) on the macroscopic response including the effect of macro-scale boundary conditions. A two-dimensional section of Charles Bridge subjected to actual climatic conditions is analyzed next to confirm the suitability of algorithmic format of FE^2 scheme for the parallel computing.

4. Homogenization of composites with interfacial debonding using duality-based solver and micromechanics

Abstract

One of the key aspects governing the mechanical performance of composite materials is debonding: the local separation of reinforcing constituents from matrix when the interfacial strength is exceeded. In this contribution, two strategies to estimate the overall response of particulate composites with rigid-brittle interfaces are investigated. The first approach is based on a detailed numerical representation of a composite microstructure. The resulting problem is discretized using the Finite Element Tearing and Interconnecting method, which, apart from computational efficiency, allows for an accurate representation of interfacial tractions as well as mutual inter-phase contact conditions. The candidate solver employs the assumption of uniform fields within the composite estimated using the Mori-Tanaka method. A set of representative numerical examples is presented to assess the added value of the detailed numerical model over the simplified micromechanics approach., Comment: accepted for publication in Computer Assisted Mechanics and Engineering Sciences

5. Mitigation of chloride induced corrosion in reinforced concrete structures and its modeling

Abstract

The paper is primarily focused on the description of transport of harmful species in concrete such as chlorides on one side and transport of corrosion inhibitors and nanoparticles used to diminish corrosion of steel reinforcement or seal the microstructure of concrete on the other side. The studied processes are helpful in reverting the chloride induced corrosion of the reinforcement in reinforced concrete structures. The transport mechanisms are summarized with the emphasis on their mathematical description and numerical solution. The paper shows modeling results of the processes including a comparison with experimental data on several typical examples. The efficiency of the methods is shown supported by experimental and numerical results. A good correlation of the models with experiments is achieved.

Abstract

Well-informed psychometrics textbooks do not appear with clockwork regularity. Despite the importance of psychometric techniques to a wide variety of scientific disciplines and societal applications, many existing treatments are either too difficult for an introductory purpose or too superficial to support a full course on psychometrics.Given this situation, the appearance of Patrick Mair’s Psychometrics with R is a breath of fresh air in the landscape of psychometrics teaching. The book provides a mostly accessible treatment of a wide variety of techniques that are relevant to psychometrics, and illustrates these by means of analytic examples that are supported by freely downloadable R-code.

Abstract

This paper presents a Compliant Rotational Reducer Mechanism (CRRM), under development in the context of a space project. The CRRM is optimized using structural and flexural topology optimization for respectively, the structural and flexure problems. With respect to the structural optimization, a mass reduction of 20 % and a shift of the lowest undesirable eigenfrequency from 400 to 1000 Hz was obtained. For the flexural optimization, a Rotational Center Constraint (RCC) and a Floating Structure Modal Objective Function (FSMOF) are introduced. The FSMOF allows to impose a desired eigenmode of a mechanism. The RCC and FSMOF are applied to generate a flexure pivot with eigenmodes of a typical flexure pivot. Finally, these results are integrated into a novel version of the CRRM.

The objective of this paper is to present a tournament scheme where the winner is determined as a function of pairwise competition between the players. We show that this tournament can be described by a time homogeneous discrete absorbing Markov chain, and derive the appropriate expressions for the probabilities and expectations of the tournament progression.

Financial support of the Czech Science Foundation (project 16-11879S) is gratefully acknowledged. Penetration of chlorides into concrete causes various types of degradation and it affects durability of concrete. Extraction of chlorides from concrete can be significantly accelerated with the help of electric field. Such extraction is nondestructive and it is relatively very fast.

28. Effects of Modified Slenderness on Nonlinear In-Plane Responses of Pin-Ended Circular Arch under a Central Concentrated Load

Abstract

It has been shown that the non-linear behaviour of a pin-ended circular arch with unequal rotational end restraints is complicated. The arch with unequal rotational end restraints under a central concentrated load may have a nonlinear equilibrium path that consists of one, two, or four unstable equilibrium paths and two or four limit points, and it may even have a nonlinear looped equilibrium path in some cases. However, it is conventionally thought that the nonlinear equilibrium path of a pin-ended circular arch under the central concentrated load has only one unstable equilibrium path with two limit points. This paper revisits the non-linear in-plane responses of pin-ended circular arches to the central concentrated load. It is shown that the equilibrium path of the non-linear in-plane responses may also has three, five, or nine equilibrium paths with two, four, and eight limit points. It is found the modified slenderness of an arch plays an important role for the number of the unstable paths and limit points.

29. Dynamic Assessment for Welding and Wind-Induced Stresses at Welded Joints of Steel Guyed Masts

Abstract

Failure of welded gusset plate joints in steel guyed masts due to cyclic stresses with a high mean value and amplitude is one of the major causes for their collapse when subjected to wind loading. To prevent the failure of the welded gusset joints, it is essential to assess the dynamic stress field in welded joints under wind loading. In deference to the global static buckling analysis of welded steel structures where the effects of residual stresses are very small and can be ignored, the welding residual stresses play an important role in assessing the cyclic stresses of gusset plate joints of guyed masts under wind loading. Hence, the residual stresses due to welding have to be included in the assessment. For this, the welding residual stress field in welded joints is first simulated using a numerical thermal-structural coupling analysis. The welding residual stresses are then assigned to a multi-scale finite element model as the initial stress field for the dynamic stress analysis of the welded joints, including a relaxation of the welding residual stresses. The results for the welding residual stress field and for the dynamic cyclic stress field are verified by laboratory tests. The peak value of the resulting cyclic stress is found to occur at the tip of the weld seams, and it results to high mean value and amplitude of cyclic stresses at the tips. Hence, the tips of weld seams are likely to be critical locations, where the welded gusset plate joint may fail due to cyclic stress fatigue under wind loading, and leading to the collapse of the guyed mast.

30. Derivation of the Dynamic Stiffness Matrix of a Functionally Graded Beam using Higher Order Shear Deformation Theory

Abstract

The dynamic stiffness matrix of a functionally graded beam (FGB) is developed using a higher order shear deformation theory. The material properties of the FGB are varied in the thickness direction based on a power-law. The kinetic and potential energies of the beam are formulated by accounting for a parabolic shear stress distribution. Hamilton’s principle is used to derive the governing differential equations of motion in free vibration. The analytical expressions for axial force, shear force, bending moment and higher order moment at any cross-section of the beam are obtained as a by-product of the Hamiltonian formulation. The differential equations are solved in closed analytical form for harmonic oscillation. The dynamic stiffness matrix of the FGB is then constructed by relating the amplitudes of forces and displacements at the ends of the beam. The Wittrick-Williams algorithm is applied to the dynamic stiffness matrix of the FGB to compute its natural frequencies and mode shapes in the usual way after solving the eigenvalue problem. Finally, some conclusions are drawn.

Abstract

In recent years, network models have been proposed as an alternative representation of psychometric constructs such as depression. In such models, the covariance between observables (e.g., symptoms like depressed mood, feelings of worthlessness, and guilt) is explained in terms of a pattern of causal interactions between these observables, which contrasts with classical interpretations in which the observables are conceptualized as the effects of a reflective latent variable. However, few investigations have been directed at the question how these different models relate to each other. To shed light on this issue, the current paper explores the relation between one of the most important network models—the Ising model from physics—and one of the most important latent variable models—the Item Response Theory (IRT) model from psychometrics. The Ising model describes the interaction between states of particles that are connected in a network, whereas the IRT model describes the probability distribution associated with item responses in a psychometric test as a function of a latent variable. Despite the divergent backgrounds of the models, we show a broad equivalence between them and also illustrate several opportunities that arise from this connection. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The paper deals with numerical modeling of damage evolution in autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) due to shrinkage. It represents coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical problem where the temperature and moisture transports are fully coupled. The mechanical problem is partially coupled with transport part because the AAC shrinkage is influenced by moisture evolution.
