1. Collisional S-Matrix for the Vibrational Dynamics of H+H2 by Quantum Computing

Abstract

An algorithm and a system of quantum circuits is developed and applied to compute accurately the S matrix for the transitions between vibrational states of H2 for collisions with H. The algorithm was applied to 100 eV laboratory collision energy at a quantum circuit simulator. The effects of the discretized dissociative continuum to the transition cross sections are carefully studied and accuracy and convergence of the results with the chosen parameters of the algorithm and the collision system are verified by comparison with a solution of the time-dependent Schrodinger equation using the classical algorithm as well as comparison with a few results from the literature., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figrues

2. Multistate Transition Dynamics by Strong Time-Dependent Perturbation in NISQ era

Abstract

We develop a quantum computing scheme utilizing McLachlan variational principle in a hybrid quantum-classical algorithm to accurately calculate the transition dynamics of a closed quantum system with many excited states subject to a strong time-dependent perturbation. A systematic approach for optimal construction of a general N-state ansatz with unary N-qubit encoding is refined. We also utilize qubit efficient encoding in McLachlan variational quantum algorithm to reduce the number of qubits to log2 N, simultaneously diminishing depths of the quantum circuits. The significant reduction of the number of time steps is achieved by use of the second order marching method. Instrumental in obtaining high accuracy are adaptations of the circuits to include time-dependent global phase correction. We illustrated, tested and optimized our quantum computing algorithm on a set of 16 bound hydrogenic eigenstates exposed to a strong laser attosecond pulse. Results for transition probabilities are obtained with accuracy better than 1%, as established by comparison to the benchmark data. Abstract

We have investigated, using molecular dynamics, the surface chemistry of hydrogen incident on the amorphous and crystalline lithium oxide and lithium hydroxide surfaces upon being slowed down by a collision cascade and retained in the amorphous surface of either Li2O or LiOH. We looked for the bonding of H to the resident structures in the surface to understand a possible chain of chemical reactions that can lead to surface transformation upon H atom impact. Our findings, using Density-Functional Theory (DFT) trained ReaxFF force field/electronegativity equalization method potentials, stress the importance of inclusion of polarization in the dynamics of a Li–O–H system, which is also illustrated by DFT energy minimization and quantum–classical molecular dynamics using tight binding DFT. The resulting polar-covalent chemistry of the studied systems is complex and very sensitive to the instantaneous positions of all atoms as well as the ratio of concentrations of various resident atoms in the surface. 4. Prospect of using Grover's search in the noisy-intermediate-scale quantum-computer era

Abstract

In order to understand the bounds of utilization of the Grover's search algorithm for the large unstructured data in presence of the quantum computer noise, we undertake a series of simulations by inflicting various types of noise, modelled by the IBM QISKit. We apply three forms of Grover's algorithms: (1) the standard one, with 4-10 qubits, (2) recently published modified Grover's algorithm, set to reduce the circuit depth, and (3) the algorithms in (1) and (2) with multi-control Toffoli's modified by addition of an ancilla qubit. Based on these simulations, we find the upper bound of noise for these cases, establish its dependence on the quantum depth of the circuit and provide comparison among them. By extrapolation of the fitted thresholds, we predict what would be the typical gate error bounds when apply the Grover's algorithms for the search of a data in a data set as large as thirty two thousands.

Abstract

We study the formation of C$_{18}$H and C$_{18}$H$_2$ by irradiating a cyclo[$18$]carbon molecule with atomic and molecular hydrogen at impact energy, $E$, in the range of 0.5-25 eV. We utilize the density-functional tight-binding method to perform molecular dynamics simulations to emulate the interaction of a carbon ring when colliding with atomic or molecular hydrogen. From our results, the formation of the C$_{18}$H molecules is likely to occur upon irradiating by H atoms at $E < 10$ eV and by H$_2$ molecules at $2 < E < 15$ eV center of mass energy. Formation of C$_{18}$H$_2$ molecules is only observed at around $E = 2$ eV. Our results show that the absorption of hydrogen is more prone in atomic than in molecular hydrogen atmosphere. Thus, we find that the probability of physio-absorption reaches up to 80 \% for atomic projectiles with $E < 5$ eV but only up to 10 \% for the molecular ones. Our analysis shows that the deformation of the carbon ring due to the hydrogen bonding produces transition from $sp$ to $sp^2$ hybridization. The angle between the carbon atoms at the locations near to the H bond in the resulting ring is not 120$^o$ but instead 110$^o$ degrees. No molecular fragmentation of the C$_{18}$ ring is observed.

Abstract

We have used a combination of pico-to-nano temporal/spatial scale computational physics and chemistry modeling of plasma–material interfaces in the tokamak fusion plasma edges to unravel the evolving characteristics, not readily accessible by empirical means, of lithium-, oxygen-, and hydrogen-containing materials of plasma-facing components under irradiation by hydrogen and its isotopes. In the present calculation, amorphous lithium compound surfaces containing oxygen, Li2O, and LiOH were irradiated by 1–100 eV particles at incident angles on the surface ranging from perpendicular to almost grazing angles. Consequential surface processes, reflection, retention, and sputtering were studied at "the same footing" and compared to earlier results from amorphous Li and LiH surfaces. The critical role of charging dynamics of lithium, oxygen, and hydrogen atoms in the surface chemistry during hydrogen-fuel irradiation was found to drive the kinetics and dynamics of these surfaces in unexpected ways that ultimately could have profound effects on fusion plasma confinement behavior and surface erosion. Abstract

The lower solar atmosphere is an intrinsically multi-component and collisional environment with electron and proton collision frequencies in the range $10^{8}-10^{10}$ Hz, which may be considerably higher than the gyro-frequencies for both species. We aim to provide a reliable quantitative set of data for collision frequencies, magnetization, viscosity, and thermal conductivity for the most important species in the lower solar atmosphere. Having such data at hand is essential for any modeling that is aimed at describing realistic properties of the considered environment. We describe the altitude dependence of the parameters and the different physics of collisions between charged species, and between charged and neutrals species. Regions of dominance of each type of collisions are clearly identified. We determine the layers within which either electrons or ions or both are unmagnetized. Protons are shown to be un-magnetized in the lower atmosphere in a layer that is at least 1000 km thick even for a kilo-Gauss magnetic field that decreases exponentially with altitude. In these layers the dynamics of charged species cannot be affected by the magnetic field, and this fact is used in our modeling. Viscosity and thermal conductivity coefficients are calculated for layers where ions are unmagnetized. We compare viscosity and friction and determine the regions of dominance of each of the phenomena. We provide the most reliable quantitative values for most important parameters in the lower solar atmosphere to be used in analytical modeling and numerical simulations of various phenomena such as waves, transport and magnetization of particles, and the triggering mechanism of coronal mass ejections., Comment: To appear in Astron. Abstract

Detailed experimental and computational information on the response of lithium surfaces to irradiation by slow hydrogenic particles (ions, atoms, molecules) is sparse and mainly speculative. In this work, we present a computational study of the reflection and retention of deuterium (D) atoms at crystalline and amorphous lithium surfaces at 300 and 500 K, where the D atoms have an impact energy in the range of 0.025–5 eV and incident angles of 0° (perpendicular incidence) or 85° (near-grazing incidence). Classical molecular dynamics simulations are performed with the reactive bond-order force field (ReaxFF) potentials. This study provides quantitative information on the deuterium sticking probability and recycling coefficient for lithium surfaces. Abstract

Krstic has carried out the first quantum mechanical calculations near threshold for the charge transfer (CT) process H^+ + H_2(X ^1Sigma_g^+, nu=0, J=0) --> H(1s) + H_2^+. These results are relevant for models of primordial galaxy and first star formation that require reliable atomic and molecular data for obtaining the early universe hydrogen chemistry. Using the results of Krstic, we calculate the relevant CT rate coefficient for temperatures between 100 and 30,000 K. We also present a simple fit which can be readily implemented into early universe chemical models. Additionally, we explore how the range of previously published data for this reaction translates into uncertainties in the predicted gas temperature and H_2 relative abundance in a collapsing primordial gas cloud. Abstract

In this paper, a wireless system is considered impacted by Beaulieu-Xie (BX) fading and Rician co-channel interference (CCI). A selection diversity combining technique is used to combat multi-path fading and CCI effects. The expression for the level crossing rate (LCR) is formulated for the receiver with more input branches, and the corresponding curves that have dependence on the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) are drawn. On the basis of the presented graphs, we quantify the amount of LCR affected by the presence of fading and interference. Additionally, we propose a classification-based predictive model which leverages the previously calculated LCR value as one of inputs among other variables (number of users, base station, the day of the week) with the aim of Quality of Service (QoS) level prediction. 15. The role of oxygen in the uptake of deuterium in lithiated graphite.

Abstract

We investigate the mechanism of deuterium retention by lithiated graphite and its relationship to the oxygen concentration through surface sensitive experiments and atomistic simulations. Deposition of lithium on graphite yielded 5%-8% oxygen surface concentration and when subsequently irradiated with D ions at energies between 500 and 1000 eV/amu and fluences over 1016 cm-2 the oxygen concentration rose to between 25% and 40%. These enhanced oxygen levels were reached in a few seconds compared to about 300 h when the lithiated graphite was allowed to adsorb oxygen from the ambient environment under equilibrium conditions. Irradiating graphite without lithium deposition, however, resulted in complete removal of oxygen to levels below the detection limit of XPS (e.g., <1%). These findings confirm the predictions of atomistic simulations, which had concluded that oxygen was the primary component for the enhanced hydrogen retention chemistry on the lithiated graphite surface. Abstract

We study the translational, vibrational, and rotational energy spectra of atoms and molecules reflected or sputtered from deuterated amorphous carbon surfaces by impact of low-energy (1–30 eV) deuterium atoms. Both the rovibrational and translational energies of sputtered deuterium molecules are found to be close to 1 eV over the whole impact energy range, with approximate equipartition between rotational and vibrational modes, particularly at the higher impact energies. Sputtered carbon-containing molecules are vibrationally energetic, with rovibrational energies in the range of 1.5–2.5 eV; translational and rotational motions are less energetic, close to 0.5 eV, but hotter, with more energy per degree of freedom. The energy distributions of ejected molecules confirm the partial thermalization of the impact cascade. We also study the angular spectrum of the velocity of the outgoing particles as well as their angular momentum. While the velocity vectors are described well by a cosine distribution, a preferred direction of rotation is found at the lowest energies, with the angular momenta preferentially oriented parallel to the surface. Abstract

Lithium wall conditioning has lowered hydrogenic recycling and dramatically improved plasma performance in many magnetic-fusion devices. In this Letter, we report quantum-classical atomistic simulations and laboratory experiments that elucidate the roles of lithium and oxygen in the uptake of hydrogen in amorphous carbon. Surprisingly, we show that lithium creates a high oxygen concentration on a carbon surface when bombarded by deuterium. Abstract

Processes for charge transfer into He2+ colliding with the atomic isotopes hydrogen (H), deuterium (D), and tritium (T) are theoretically studied at collision energies as low as 30 eV/amu. Probabilities and cross sections for electron capture into different shells of the projectile are calculated using an ab initio approach which solves the time-dependent Schrodinger equation. The results are interpreted in terms of radial and rotational couplings between molecular orbitals. The probabilities exhibit strong Stueckelberg oscillations for charge transfer into shells with the principal quantum numbers n = 2 and 3 due to radial coupling mechanisms in specific ranges of the impact parameter. The total cross sections for charge transfer, evaluated for a given shell, differ by orders of magnitude, as different isotopes are used in the collisions. The isotope effect increases significantly for decreasing n = 3, 2, and 1. This finding is attributed to the influence of the rotational coupling mechanism, which is strongly affected by the distance of closest approach between the collision partners.

Abstract

We present a detailed quantum-mechanical study for dissociation of vibrationally excited molecular diatomic target, of H-2(nu(i)) by proton impact and H-2(+)(nu(i)) by hydrogen-atom impact, in the range of center-of-mass collision energies from threshold to 9.5 eV. The dominant dissociation mechanisms in this three-atomic collision system are identified and their effectiveness analyzed for different collision geometries. The cross section calculations for direct and charge-transfer dissociation are performed by solving the Schrodinger equation for the nuclear and electronic motions on the two lowest diabatic electronic surfaces of H-3(+), and by using an expansion of nuclear wave function in a vibrational basis containing all discrete H-2 and H-2(+) states and a large number of pseudostates from each of the corresponding discretized continua. The energy and angular spectra of the fragments are also calculated and analyzed.

Abstract

Using a merged-beam technique, the absolute, total electron-capture cross section has been measured for collisions of Ne2+ ions with hydrogen (deuterium) atoms at collision energies between 139 and 1490 eV/u. These data are compared to three other published measurements, two of which differ from one another by a factor greater than two. Early quantal rate coefficient calculations for Ne2+ ions with hydrogen at eV/u energies predict a cross section many orders of magnitude below the previously measured cross section at 40 eV/u. A possible explanation is given for the discrepancy between theory and experiment.

Abstract

We describe our recent activities regarding the production of atomic and molecular data that are needed for modeling divertor plasmas in fusion tokamaks. The transport of particles and, in particular, the exchange of momentum in such plasmas can be dominantly influenced by elastic scattering and resonant charge transfer among hydrogen ions, atoms, and molecules. We have undertaken a comprehensive calculation of these processes, in all isotopic combinations of hydrogen, and highlights of that study, with intercomparison of various integral and differential cross sections, are shown here. Also, in the formation of the detached plasma layers the processes of charge transfer between hydrogen ions and vibrationally excited molecules might play a crucial role in the chain of reactions called Molecule Assisted Recombination (MAR). All other inelastic processes involving hydrogen molecules are also of interest in the colder parts of the divertor plasma. We have studied all processes that involve hydrogen ions/atoms and vibrationally excited molecules/molecular ions (charge transfer, excitation, dissociation, association), in the range of Center-of-Mass (CM) collision energies 0.5-10 eV. Here we discuss integral cross sections for these reactions, resolved in both initial and final vibrational states. Abstract

The multidisciplinary approach to the study of metals which we are proposing includes the modernization of the curricular content and its connection with everyday life. The use of additional teaching material in elementary schools in rural and urban areas in the wider region of the city of Niš has contributed to increased interest and activities on the part of the schoolchildren, which has in turn led to a significant quantitative improvement in their knowledge of chemistry in general, but also of metals in particular. All of the schoolchildren achieved a satisfactory level of knowledge (>50%) following the implementation of the expanded curriculum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
