Abstract

This Technical Design Report presents a detailed description of all aspects of the LUXE (Laser Und XFEL Experiment), an experiment that will combine the high-quality and high-energy electron beam of the European XFEL with a high-intensity laser, to explore the uncharted terrain of strong-field quantum electrodynamics characterised by both high energy and high intensity, reaching the Schwinger field and beyond. The further implications for the search of physics beyond the Standard Model are also discussed.

Abstract

Using detailed spectroscopic measurements, highly-resolved in both time and space, a self-generated plasma rotation is demonstrated for the first time in a cylindrical Z-pinch implosion with a pre-embedded axial magnetic field. The plasma parameters and all three components of the magnetic field are resolved. The plasma is seen to rotate at a velocity comparable to the peak implosion velocity, considerably affecting the force and energy balance throughout the implosion. Moreover, the evolution of the rotation is consistent with magnetic flux surface isorotation, a novel observation in a Z-pinch., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The ion kinetic energy in a stagnating plasma was previously determined by Kroupp et al. (Kroupp et al., 2011), from Doppler-dominated lineshapes augmented by measurements of plasma properties and assuming a uniform-plasma model. Notably, the energy was found to be dominantly stored in hydrodynamic flow. Here, we advance a new description of this stagnation as supersonically turbulent. Such turbulence implies a non-uniform density distribution. We demonstrate how to re-analyze the spectroscopic data consistent with the turbulent picture, and show this leads to better concordance of the overconstrained spectroscopic measurements, while also substantially lowering the inferred mean density., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, 1 table

Abstract

We present simulations of an oxygen gas puff Z-pinch on a University scale generator at the Weizmann Institute of Science. The work accounts for the detailed geometry of the nozzle, the initial neutral gas density distribution, and the subsequent implosion. The modeling results show significant improvement with data for the current at the time of stagnation in comparison with a previous effort [Rosenzweig et al., Phys. Plasmas 27, 022705 (2020)]. As a first step, we performed simulations of the flow of neutral diatomic oxygen from a plenum through a nozzle within a recessed cathode, across a gap, and into the anode with a recessed grounded honeycomb. These simulations show an agreement with the measured initial gas density profiles within the region not blocked by the recesses and accessible to visible measurements. The computed neutral gas flow profile serves as the initial condition for a radiation magnetohydrodynamic simulation of the implosion using the MACH2-TCRE code. By considering the specific details of the nozzle and chamber geometry, we find agreement with the measured current profile, including the inductive notch. The simulations predict that the plasma undergoes a strong pinch within the hidden anode recess. The simulations also predict the strongest radiation pulse occurs within the anode recess and at the time of the observed inductive notch. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Laser-plasma proton acceleration was investigated in the target normal sheath acceleration regime with a target composed of a gas layer and a thin foil. The laser's shape, duration, energy and frequency are modified as it propagates in the gas, altering the laser-solid interaction leading to proton acceleration. The modified properties of the laser were assessed by both numerical simulations and by measurements. The 3D particle-in-cell simulations have shown that a nearly seven-fold increase in peak intensity at the foil plane is possible. In the experiment, maximum proton energies showed high dependence on the energy transmission of the laser through the gas and a lesser dependence on the size and shape of the pulse. At high gas densities, where high intensity was expected, laser energy depletion and pulse distortion suppressed proton energies. At low densities, with the laser focused far behind the foil, self-focusing was observed and the gas showed a positive effect on proton energies. The promising results of this first exploration motivate further study of the target.

Abstract

We report on the application of well-balanced Ross-filter systems for the diagnostics of x-ray emission from a Z-pinch plasma. The composition and thicknesses of the filter layers were so selected to yield the intensities of neon H- and He-like emission lines separately with relatively good accuracy. The systems provide convenient absolute and time-dependent measurements of the emission intensities, and they are particularly useful for relatively low source-light intensities. The applicability of the systems is examined with the aid of time-dependent modeling of the stagnating plasma, using collisional-radiative and radiation transport calculations. Abstract

Particle pulses generated by laser-plasma interaction are characterized by ultrashort duration, high particle density, and sometimes a very strong accompanying electromagnetic pulse (EMP). Therefore, beam diagnostics different from those known from classical particle accelerators such as synchrotrons or linacs are required. Easy to use single-shot techniques are favored, which must be insensitive towards the EMP and associated stray light of all frequencies, taking into account the comparably low repetition rates and which, at the same time, allow for usage in very space-limited environments. Various measurement techniques are discussed here, and a space-saving method to determine several important properties of laser-generated electron bunches simultaneously is presented. The method is based on experimental results of electron-sensitive imaging plate stacks and combines these with Monte Carlo-type ray-tracing calculations, yielding a comprehensive picture of the properties of particle beams. The total charge, the energy spectrum, and the divergence can be derived simultaneously for a single bunch.
