Basal cell carcinoma presents a relatively low potential and local malignancy and very slow growth giving only occasionally metastatic spreading. The frequency of occurrence of metastatic dissemination is estimated in the literature depending on examined population from 0.028% to 0.55%. Metastases are most often found in lymph nodes, lungs bones and internal organs: liver, spleen, kidneys, adrenal glands, pleura and the peritoneum. Authors present a case of a 69-years old female with an extensive basal cell carcinoma of the head convexity, infiltrating the subcutaneous tissue, periostium, bone and dura mater, giving distant metastases to other bone and soft tissue structures of a thoracic spine, which was confirmed by biopsy and histopathological findings of neoplasm tissue in spine. The primary lesion was successfully treated surgically. Despite administered radiotherapy of metastases in spine, progress of the disease during 1-year period was observed. The patient was alive with metastatic tumours present at last follow-up. Basing on the review of the literature and our case report we can distinguish following factors which may increase the risk of occurrence of basal cell carcinoma metastases: the great extent of the primary lesion, deep penetration to stromal tissue, blood and lymph vessel invasion, long history of tumour occurrence and the presence of metatypia in histopathological findings. The above-mentioned case fulfils the criteria of carcinoma basocellulare metastases proposed by Latters and Kessel and may be included to the general registration list of this cancer in the world.

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1 was used to infect cultures of human embryonic dorsal root ganglion cells. Infected cultured were studied by electron microscopy. Viral nucleocapsids were observed to be internalized into neuronal cells bodies and neuritic extensions by fusion of the viral envelope and the plasma membrane. No signs of internalization by endocytosis were noted. Nucleocapsids were transported in neurites and were within 2 hrs postinfection found located near the microtubules and close to the nuclear pores in the perikaryon. A primary envelopment of nucleocapsids occurred at the inner lamina of the nuclear membrane and virions appeared between the two laminae. Presence of non-enveloped nucleocapsids outside the nuclear membrane and in close contact with the endoplasmic reticulum suggested that nucleocapsids could pass to the cytoplasmic side probably by de-envelopment at the outer nuclear membrane. A secondary envelopment occurred at the endoplasmic reticulum where the virions also became enclosed in transport vesicles. Enveloped virus appearing in the cytoplasm of neurons and neuritic extensions was always found only inside these transport vesicles. During their passage through the cytoplasm the virion-transport vesicle complexes were surrounded by smaller lysosome-like vesicles possibly derived from the Golgi apparatus. Fusion reactions between vesicles with virions and the smaller vesicles seemed to occur. We discuss if in this way the virion-transport vesicle complexes might be provided with glycosyl transferases and substrates necessary for maturation and completion of glycosylation of the viral envelope glycoproteins. The transport vesicles seemed essential for egress of virions from the infected cell by releasing virus when fusing with the plasma membrane.

Measles antibodies were determined, in the course of measles, in sera and nasal secretions of 54 and 27 children, respectively. The examinations were performed on the 3rd or 4th day (1st period) and between the 10th and 14th day (2nd period) after onset of rash in both sera and nasal secretions and after 25 to 60 days (3rd period) in sera only. Geometric mean titres of antibodies in sera determined by haemmagglutination inhibition (HI) and neutralization tests in the 1st period were 126.3 and 115.3 respectively. For the 2nd period the respective figures were 318.4 and 396.1 and for the 3rd period--388.0 and 445.6. Fractionation on Sephadex G-200 of sera from the 1st period revealed HI and neutralizaing antibodies associated mainly with the IgM serum globulin class. Measles HI and neutralizing antibodies were also found in nasal secretions of all 27 children, but their titres were much lower than in serum. The antibodies determined by indirect immunofluorescence in nasal secretions were associated with IgA in 26 and with IgG immunoglobulin in 15 of the 27 subjects. No IgM antibodies were found.

In 7 children aged 18 months to 7 years isolated from a group of 128 children with infectious mononucleosis the cytomegalovirus infection was found. Infection was diagnosed by determination of antibodies against immediate early and late CMV antigen by means of the ELISA test. Besides that, antibodies were determined against the capsid antigen and early antigen of EB virus by the method of indirect immunofluorescence. In four children only cytomegalovirus infection was found and three had a mixed infection with both viruses and the diagnosis in these cases was: infectious mononucleosis (due to EBV) with coexistent or following CMV infection. In the sera of two children with cytomegalovirus mononucleosis changes were observed in the antibodies against EBV which is explained as a result of interactions between CMV and EBV in the organism of the host.

Capacity of lympocytes for blastic transformation in in vitro cultures under the influence of PHA and PWM was studied in 40 subjects aged 20--60 years and in 43 aged 60--100 years. In the higher age group, in about 25% of cases, low percentages of blasts in cultures stimulated with PHA and PWM were observed. In 101 subjects aged 65--100 years, the mean level of IgA in serum was significantly higher compared with the 20--40-year age group. In some cases, levels of two or three immunoglobulin classes were raised. The unexplained changes in the reaction of lymphocytes to PHA and PWM and in levels of serum IgG were attributed to the old age of the subjects.

Cytophotometric determinations of DNA were carried out with a pulse cytophotometer in peripheral blood leucocytes in 25 patients with infectious mononucleosis and 30 patients with other infectious diseases. DNA cytograms of patients with mononucleosis showed presence of a high percent of cells in phase S and G2+M of the cell cycle. This is an evidence of active proliferation of these cells persisting for about 6--8 weeks. The authors believe that pulse cytophotometry may be used for detection and investigation of states with lymphocytes stimulation in vivo, e.g. in certain infectious diseases, during immunotherapy of neoplasms, rejection reaction etc.
