Abstract

We report on the temperature dependence of various photovoltaic device parameters of solar cells, fabricated from interpenetrating networks of conjugated polymers with fullerenes, in the wide temperature range of their possible operating conditions (25–60 °C). The open-circuit voltage was found to decrease linearly with increasing temperature. For the short-circuit current, we observed a monotonic increase with increasing temperature, followed by a saturation region. The rate of this increase (coupled to a corresponding increase for the fill factor) was found to overtake the corresponding rate of decrease in voltage, resulting in an overall increase of the energy conversion efficiency. The efficiency was observed to reach a maximum value in the approximate range 47–60 °C. The results are discussed with respect to possible mechanisms for photovoltage generation and charge carrier transport in the conjugated polymer-fullerene composite, and in particular, thermally activated charge carrier mobility. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. Abstract

31st European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 3198-3202, FP7-CHEETAH is a combined collaborative project (CP) and coordination and support action (CSA) funded under the European Commission’s 7th Framework program and coordinated by ECN, NL with the aims to solve specific R&D issues and to overcome fragmentation of European PV R&D by intensifying the collaboration between R&D providers and industry to accelerate the industrialization of innovations. The project is also tightly linked to the EERA-PV Joint Program. The CHEETAH Knowledge Exchange Area Portal (KEAP), in parallel to the project web site and other dissemination activities (newsletter, communication, etc), constitutes the pillar of the project to distribute information in a uniform and simple way. It is based on several very efficient ICT procedures by operating from the collection to management of information by dynamic data base matrix: any uploaded information is linked to all others. All interested browsers/readers can have efficient access to any stored data thanks to the utilization of a search engine/query keywords and user friendly graphic interfaces. Based on the implementation of SOPHi@webinar platform, the portal also offers its own e-learning platform. CHEETAH KEAP represents for its peculiarities a major breakthrough in the field with highly innovative contents and a substantial improvement in comparison with the state of the art of knowledge exchange on PV RTD.

The review describes the most relevant characteristics and major trends in a compact way.

Abstract

Objective: The effect of oral warfarin on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the synthetic direct thrombin inhibitor napsagatran was investigated. Methods: In an open, randomised, two-way crossover study, 12 healthy male volunteers were infused napsagatran (80 µg/min) for 48 h. Each subject was administered 25 mg warfarin (Coumadin) at the start of the infusion in either the first or second treatment period. Sampling was performed regularly over the treatment period and 24 h thereafter for measurement of plasma levels of napsagatran, activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and prothrombin time (PT). Results: The pharmacokinetic parameters of napsagatran were not significantly influenced by co-administration of warfarin. Napsagatran administration was followed by increases in APTT and PT. Co-administration of warfarin increased the AUEC (area under the effect curve) calculated for the period 0–48 h (corrected for baseline) for APTT by 45% (95% CI: 28–65%) and for PT by 438% (95% CI: 272–678%) compared to the treatment with napsagatran alone. Conclusion: Warfarin has no effect on the pharmacokinetics of napsagatran, but has a marked influence on the pharmacodynamic parameters (APTT, PT) of napsagatran. In clinical practice, this interaction between the two compounds should be taken into account. The PT cannot be used to monitor the effect of oral anticoagulants during the switch from this group of direct thrombin inhibitors to full oral anticoagulant therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

39. Influence of the Relative Humidity on the Performance of Polymer/TiO2Photovoltaic Cells

Abstract

Hydrolysis of titanium(IV) isopropoxide (TTIP) is a well‐known method for the fabrication of TiO2. Normally it is made via a sol–gel reaction in the presence of water. In this paper we report on the preparation of flat TiO2films for conjugated polymer/TiO2photovoltaic cells, from a TTIP/isopropanol solution. It is shown that the morphological structure of the TiO2film is strongly dependent on the relative humidity during spin‐coating of the TTIP/isopropanol solution. In bilayer devices consisting of TiO2/poly[2‐methoxy‐5‐(3′,7′‐dimethyloctyloxy)‐1,4‐phenylene vinylene] (MDMO‐PPV), a low relative humidity (< 25 %, room temperature) is needed in order to form smooth, transparent TiO2films. Increasing the relative humidity results in porous TiO2films with a high surface roughness, which leads to shunted devices. Apart from bilayer devices, bulk‐heterojunction (BHJ) hybrid TiO2:MDMO‐PPV photovoltaic cells have been made, by spin‐coating a mixture of TTIP and MDMO‐PPV in toluene. Again a strong relation was found between the relative humidity during spin‐coating and the current–voltage characteristics of the devices. However, in contrast to the bilayer devices, the best BHJ devices were made at higher relative humidity. The observed performance dependence on relative humidity is discussed in relation to the TiO2morphology.

41. Pharmacodynamics and Pharmacokinetics of a Single Oral Dose of Nitrazepam in Healthy Volunteers: An Interethnic Comparative Study between Japanese and European Volunteers

Abstract

Potential interethnic differences in drug disposition and effects between Japanese and white subjects hamper the registration in Japan of medications already used in Western countries. This double‐blind, placebo‐controlled, crossover study was conducted to compare the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of a single oral dose of nitrazepam (5 mg) in age‐ and sex‐matched Japanese (n = 8) and white (n = 8) healthy volunteers. The study was performed in centers in Japan and the Netherlands using the same methods and study design. Subjects were individually matched for gender, age, and body stature. Drug effects were measured by means of saccadic and smooth pursuit eye movements and visual analog lines obtained from the scales of Bond and Lader. There were no pharmacokinetic differences between the Japanese and white subjects. Clearance of nitrazepam was 0.91 ± 0.165 mL/min/kg and 1.17 ± 0.492 mL/min/kg, and half‐life (t1/2) was 22.1 ± 4.96 hours and 21.5 ± 7.51 hours for the Japanese and European groups, respectively. Pharmacokinetic parameters showed no significant correlation with age, height, or weight. The average time‐effect curves for the different parameters were comparable between groups. Compared with placebo, both groups showed similar significant reductions in average peak velocity and increases in saccadic inaccuracy and reaction time. Visual analog scores showed clear sedation in the white subjects, but insignificant effects in the Japanese subjects. Smooth pursuit did not change significantly in either group. Slope and intercept of the concentration‐effect relationships for saccadic peak velocity showed considerable intersubject variability, but no clear differences between groups. The pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of nitrazepam were similar in matched healthy Japanese and white subjects. Interethnic comparative studies are feasible, and provide meaningful information about potential racial differences in disposition and action of drugs. Such studies can form a rational basis for comparative clinical trials.

42. Photoinduced Electron Transfer from Conjugated Polymers to TiO<INF>2</INF>

Abstract

Photoinduced electron transfer from π-conjugated polymers, in particular derivatives of poly(p-phenylenevinylene)s (PPVs) and polythiophenes (PTs) (as a donor), to nanocrystalline TiO2 (as an acceptor) is studied using near-steady-state photoinduced absorption (PIA) spectroscopy and photoinduced electron spin resonance (ESR). The PIA spectra of the polymers adsorbed on nc-TiO2 recorded at 80 K reveal two subgap transitions in the near-IR and visible range of the spectrum, which are characteristic of the formation of cation radicals (polarons) on the polymer chains, as a result of a photoinduced electron-transfer reaction. When the PPVs are in contact with nc-ZrO2, which has a conduction band 1 eV higher in energy than nc-TiO2, the photoinduced electron-transfer reaction becomes energetically unfavorable and long-lived triplet photoexcitations are formed instead. The PIA experiments give direct spectral evidence that nc-TiO2 acts as an efficient electron acceptor toward the polymers in the excited state. In combination with nc-TiO2, partial quenching of the photoluminescence of the polymers occurs. The photoinduced electron transfer to nc-TiO2 is confirmed by ESR spectroscopy at 130 K, which reveals the reversible formation of polymer cation radicals upon excitation of the PPV in combination with nc-TiO2 but not with nc-ZrO2. Both PIA and ESR spectroscopies show that the recombination of charges is characterized by a distribution of lifetimes at cryogenic temperatures ranging from milliseconds to tenths of seconds.

Abstract

We report a study of the optimization of power conversion efficiency in hybrid solar cells based on nanostructured titanium dioxide and a poly[2-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-5-methoxy-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV) based conjugated polymer. Charge collection efficiency is enhanced by introducing a poly(ethylenedioxythiophene)/polystyrene sulphonate (PEDOT) layer (under the gold electrode) as the hole collector. Device performance is maximized for a device with a net active layer thickness of 100 nm. The optimized device has peak external quantum efficiencies ≈40% at the polymer’s maximum absorption wavelength and yield short circuit current density >=2 mA cm-2 for air mass (AM) 1.5 conditions (100 mW cm-2, 1 sun). The AM 1.5 open circuit voltage for this device is 0.64 V and the fill factor is 0.43, resulting in an overall power conversion efficiency of 0.58%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The Langmuir film-forming properties of rodlike oligo(cyclohexylidene) oximes and derivatives 1(n)−8 have been studied. It is shown that subtle structural modifications of their hydrocarbon framework, such as end-functionalization by a tert-butyl group or an n-alkyl group or (selective) hydrogenation of double bonds, markedly affect their propensity toward Langmuir monolayer formation and in particular monolayer film stability. Mean molecular areas (π−A isotherms) show that the oximes orient nearly perpendicular on the air−water interface. Film transfer of 5(2) onto moderately hydrophilic silicon (100) wafers gave predominantly Z-type deposition; for a monolayer a tilt angle of 26° was derived (atomic force microscopy). The quantitative elemental composition of a transferred multilayer assembly of 5(2) was determined using elastic recoil detection.

Abstract

1. In a previous study it was demonstrated that a decrease in liver blood flow produced a decrease in clearance of recombinant human tissue-type plasminogen activator (rt-PA). 2. The purpose of this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, three-way, cross-over investigation was to determine the effect of nifedipine (20 mg orally), a compound that increases liver blood flow, on plasma concentrations of steady state endogenous and recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA and rt-PA) (35 mg of rt-PA over 2 h) in nine healthy male volunteers. 3. Nifedipine increased liver blood flow by 95% (42-167%) (mean (95% confidence interval)) as assessed by indocyanine green (ICG, 0.5 mg kg-1 i.v. bolus injection) clearance. 4. Nifedipine did not influence the plasma concentrations of total rt-PA antigen and activity as evaluated by the areas under the rt-PA curves from 30 min (time at which nifedipine was ingested) to 90 min during the rt-PA infusion (P > 0.05) and by analysis of a possible treatment x time interaction (P > 0.05). In addition, the plasma concentrations of endogenous t-PA remained unchanged when nifedipine was given alone. 5. In conclusion, by using nifedipine as a model compound it was demonstrated that the combination of rt-PA and a compound which increases liver blood flow probably does not lead to substantial changes in plasma concentrations of rt-PA.

Abstract

The absorption of high and low molecular fractions of heparin from the subcutaneous compartment was evaluated in eight healthy males. They were given an intravenous infusion of 4000 U calcium heparin in 4 hours and on another occasion a subcutaneous injection of 12,500 U calcium heparin (washout period of 1 week). Anticoagulation was monitored by anti-Xa, antithrombin activity, and activated partial thromboplastin time. To evaluate factors that might influence absorption, body weight, body fat, and abdominal skinfold thickness were recorded. There was a pronounced inter-individual variability in absorption but the absorption of the two fractions of heparin was similar. The highly variable absorption was related to the abdominal skinfold thickness, and this could have implications for therapeutic and prophylactic heparin regimens.
