1. A novel 3D-printed brachytherapy applicator and Monte Carlo model for the treatment of conjunctival tumors.

Abstract

To develop a custom low dose rate brachytherapy applicator for the treatment of conjunctival malignancies which leverages 3D-printing technology to provide enhanced design flexibility and availability. An elliptical shell applicator inspired by ocular surgery postoperation conformer shells was developed for the placement of the applicator around the cornea of the eye, with a central hole to provide patient comfort. The applicator featured 2 concentric circles of slots for iodine-125 seeds, providing customization of the dose distribution depending on the location of the target. The applicator was modeled using computer-aided design software. The resultant model STL file was used for 3D printing of the applicator and the development of a Monte Carlo model of the applicator and its dose distribution. The applicator was successfully 3D printed using biocompatible resin, which could be sterilized for treatment after manual source loading. A Geant4 model of the applicator was created directly from the STL model and was applied to a phantom to estimate the dose distribution delivered by the applicator. The toroidal dose distribution allowed for treatment of the conjunctiva while reducing dose to the cornea compared to traditional eye plaque designs. A custom 3D-printed applicator was successfully developed and modeled for the treatment of conjunctival malignancies. This novel applicator design potentially provides higher quality, more customizable dose distributions for patients and the simplicity of the design makes it accessible for any clinic with 3D-printing technology. 01 februari 2023, Item does not contain fulltext, To support registration of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) for chronic indications, 6-month toxicity studies have historically been conducted. Experience with mAb development has shown a relatively benign and well-understood safety profile for this class, with most toxicity findings anticipated based on pharmacology. We evaluated whether a 6-month toxicity study is necessary to assess the long-term safety of mAbs. Data on First-in-Human (FIH)-enabling and chronic toxicity studies were shared for 142 mAbs submitted by 11 companies. Opportunities to further optimize study designs to reduce animal usage were identified. For 71% of mAbs, no toxicities or no new toxicities were noted in chronic studies compared to FIH-enabling study findings. New toxicities of potential concern for human safety or that changed trial design were identified in 13.5% of cases, with 7% being considered critical and 2% leading to program termination. An iterative, weight-of-evidence model which considers factors that influence the overall risk for a mAb to cause toxicity was developed. This model enables an evidence-based justification, suggesting when 3-month toxicity studies are likely sufficient to support late-stage clinical development and registration for some mAbs.

This paper describes the design and characterization of a directional Solid State Detector (SSD) that generates images of radiation point sources and scatter patterns from irradiated targets, thus accurately identifying their locations. Previous papers demonstrated that other types of directional radiation sensors, such as Ionization Chambers, Geiger-Mueller and Scintillation Counters, can be designed to detect and locate arrays of gamma ray and x-ray point sources and broad scatter patterns.

Abstract

This paper presents the results of further studies of dose enhancement in dual and single-dielectric pMOSFET dosimeters for various package and die designs. Eight different MOSFET designs and package types were investigated over a photon energy range from 14 to 1250 keV. Seven X-ray effective energies and two radioactive sources of cesium and cobalt provided the radiation. As in a previous study, Rutherford back-scattered electrons were primarily responsible for the dose enhancement factors which achieved values as high as 20. Packages filled with silicon grease, aluminum oxide, or paraffin eliminated the contribution of back-scatter to the enhanced dose. These modifications allowed measurements of the usual dose enhancement at the aluminum or polysilicon gate-silicon nitride (dual dielectric devices), or silicon dioxide interfaces (single dielectric parts), and at the silicon nitride-silicon dioxide interface. In addition to the primary peak in the DEF (Dose Enhancement Factor) curve versus energy at 45.7 keV, there is a second peak at about 215 keV. This peak might be due to enhancements at the interfaces of a MOSFET. These interface effects were small in the single-insulator parts in standard ceramic packages, and significantly larger in the dual-insulator devices. The effects were reduced by filling the packages with the materials as previously described. The geometry of the package, for example, the size of the air gap between the die's surface, and the lid of the package impacts the value of the DEF.

6. The use of hydrogenous material for sensitizing pMOS dosimeters to neutrons

Abstract

This paper is concerned with the application of pMOS dosimeters to measuring neutron dose by the use of hydrogenous materials to convert incident neutron flux to recoil protons. These latter charged particles can generate electron-hole pairs, and consequently, charge trapping takes place at the MOS interfaces, and threshold voltage shifts are produced. The use of pMOS devices for measuring gamma doses has been described extensively in the literature. Clearly, if measurable voltage shifts could be generated in a MOS device by neutrons, then a radiation detection instrument containing two MOS devices, back to back, with hydrogenous shields, and one MOS dosimeter without a converter would allow 4[Pi] measurements of neutron and gamma doses to be made. The results obtained in this study indicate that paraffin or polyethylene will convert incident, 2.82 MeV neutrons to recoil protons, which subsequently cause measurable voltage shifts.

Abstract

obliquedistance is a video work of 15 minutes (HD Video loop) exhibited at CLOSUPATADISTANCE Solo Exhibition at KRONENBERG WRIGHT ARTISTS PROJECTS that reveals an oblique view and narrative of human migration and human navigation through seeminly untouched wilderness. The work was undertaken at the last mountain ridge of the Himalayan range in Vietnam with the support of the Hà Giang and Cúc Phương National Park residency program in 2016. The work layers the mountain range and the Lô river descending through the Gate of Heaven as viewed from atop an unseen rope bridge. The moving river sequence is overlayed with a second sequence of imagery; that of high altitude mists, recorded further up the mountain range. The final compilation video has no overt visual references to human habitation. Rather viewers are left to speculate on the angle of the visual recording (which would have been impossible if not for human intervention) and a sound track of birdcalls, wind, flowing water, and the occasional rumble of motorcycle and truck engines. The work was undertaken with assistance of Save Vietnam Wildlife Fund and University of New South Wales Conference leave in June/July 2016.

Abstract

obliquedistance 01–20 closeupatadistance 2016 series comprises x 20 metal etched plates @ 254mm x 203 mm x 10mm thick (mounting 3-4 cm from wall). These selected historical images on display in include 20 American Colony plates dating from 1931 to 1936 and are sourced from The Library of Congress (permission to reproduce) Matson Collection. They show the Jordanian bank of the Dead Sea as viewed from the air and detail human habitation, river systems, shorelines, naval vessels, mountains, and historical sites. All signs of the original photographer’s work have been left in place, such as crop-marks and tape, to form an arrangement of the pictures in a tight grid formation enables viewers to gage elements of import to people and governments in this pre British Mandate period.

Abstract

This paper describes a study of dosimeters with a range of 0 to 0.2 mGy that were developed by the authors and built by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). These instruments are a type of air-filled ion chamber that is self-reading by means of an internal carbon fiber electrometer. Two types of these dosimeters were constructed: one with an ion chamber wall made of a conductive hydrogenous material, and the other device made with a conductive wall lining of non-hydrogenous material. Both types of dosimeters have the same sensitivity for gamma radiation, but greatly different sensitivities for fast neutrons, thus making it possible to measure gamma radiation and neutron doses separately in a mixed radiation field. The results indicate that such pairs of dosimeters can be used for the first time to accurately monitor personnel for gamma ray and neutron doses in real time. Since the difference in neutron sensitivities is due to the properties of wall materials, periodic calibrations of the dosimeter system can be accomplished using only gamma rays after the material constants are measured. The absolute number of neutron induced transmutations in sulfur was required for this work. Methods and techniques which were applied to determine this quantity are described in the text. Abstract

Gene-targeted mice lacking the β[sub 2] microglobulin gene (β[sub 2]m[sup -/-] mice), and hence functional major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecules, do not develop CD4[sup -] CD8[sup +] cells. We show here that both in vitro and in vivo treatment with 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), a trans-activating ligand of the endogenous aryl hydrocarbon receptor (Ah-R), bypasses the need for MHC class I molecules for selection into the CD4[sup -] CD8[sup +] cell pool. When β[sub 2]m[sup -/-] dams were given a single dose of 50 μg of TCDD, ≈ 13% of CD4[sup -] CD8[sup +] thymocytes could be detected in their newborn pups. In TCDD-exposed fetal thymus organ cultures of β[sub 2]m[sup -/-] mice, ≈ 35% CD4[sup -] CD8[sup +] thymocytes were detectable. About 16% of these CD4[sup -] CD8[sup +] cells bore the αβ T-cell receptor (TCR) and ≈ 33% bore CD3. Only a minority of the CD8[sup +] cells were heat-shock antigen positive. The cells possessed killing activity as shown using the [sup 51]Cr-release assay comprising γδ TCR[sup -] CD4[sup -] CD8[sup +] thymocytes from 3 to 4-day-old β[sub 2]m[sup -/-] mice. Thus, TCDD leads to a significant increase of mature CD4[sup -] CD8[sup +] thymocytes in relative and absolute numbers. High numbers of CD4[sup -] CD8[sup +] thymocytes developed also in organ cultures from thymi, lacking both MHC class I and class II molecules, exposed to TCDD. A 10-fold transient increase of Notch1 mRNA in thymocytes from fetal thymus organ culture, exposed for 4 days to TCDD, was detected in CD4[sup +] CD8[sup +] cells compared with controls. We suggest that TCDD affects thymic selection and directs the lineage commitment of CD4[sup +] CD8[sup +] thymocytes towards CD4[sup -] CD8[sup +] cells, possibly via up-regulation of the Notch1 gene.
