Glass beam which is the subject of this research is the main load bearing element of the new entrance canopy of hotel Dubrovnik located in the centre of Zagreb. The structure of the canopy is entirely made of laminated glass which refers to two or more glass panes bonded together with an elastomeric interlayer such as polyvynil butyral (PYB) to improve the post-breakage characteristics of the glass. This paper presents experimental testing of a laminated glass beam and determination of elasticity modulus and bending tensile strength. Based on experimental results an evaluation of the bearing capacity of the glass beam is offered in the conclusion.

When the pier S6 of the Sava-Jakuševac steel railway bridge had lost its stability due to underwashing during years of exploitation, the bridge started to collapse progressively. This caused railway bridge permanent deformation of the cross section close to pier S6. For the purpose of reconstruction of the bridge, experimental investigation was performed consisted of: residual stresses and strain measurement.

Previous investigations acknowledged that reinforcement of concrete with randomly distributed short fibres may improve the energy absorption during static and dynamic loading by comparison to ordinary concrete. This paper presents fibre-reinforced composite concrete, consisting of recycled steel fibres and recycled rubber in combination with industrial steel fibres. As a yield of tire recycling, steel fibres and rubber were obtained and used as by-products in composite concrete. Experimental investigation included six concrete mixtures with ratio of industrial to recycled fibres 100/0 %, 50/50 % and 0/100 %, with or without the addition of recycled rubber. Toughness and impact strength were investigated on the concrete elements consisting of various ratios of the industrial and recycled fibres with addition of recycled rubber particles. Fracture toughness test was performed on single edge notch bend specimen (SENB or three-point bend). During static loading crack opening and its increase was recorded continuously by means of two LVDT sensors. During impact testing hammer was dropped at the specimens from the specified height. Test configuration included force measurement with sampling frequency of 50 kHz. Test results include toughness, impact resistance and other important properties of fracture mechanics.

A large number of ancient structures in Croatia are located in the coastal area where the safety of structures is decreased due to aggressive marine environment. There are s everal cultural heritage structures which are continuously monitored by Faculty of Civil Engineering at the University of Zagreb. One of such application of long-term structural health monitoring system on cultural heritage structures is presented in this paper. This monitoring system is a part of conservation, restoration and reconstruction procedures which were performed during the last ten years on the part of Diocletian’s palace in Split. Installation of the monitoring system was carried out in two phases: first phase of the research included assessment of embedded material, bearing stone and copper clamps and in the second stage monitoring system was installed, which is based on continuous static measurement of displacement, strain and temperature. Data recordings as well as software support are available at remote location via the internet. Aim of monitoring is early detection of structural damage, that timely alert the system and in such way enables prevention of further degradation of the structure.
