Abstract

Trimeron lattice excitations in single crystalline magnetite, in the form of the $c$ axis switching (i.e. the reorganization of the lattice caused by external magnetic field) at temperatures below the Verwey temperature $T_V$ are observed by magnetization experiments. These excitations exhibit strong sensitivity to doping (with Zn, Al, and Ti), nonstoichiometry and hydrostatic pressure ($p < 1.2$ GPa). The considered indicators of the axis switching (AS) are: the switching field $B_{sw}$, the energy density needed to switch the axis $E_{sw}$ and the activation energy $U$. Our results show that hydrostatic pressure $p$ weakens the low$-T$ magnetite structure (decreases $T_V$) and has roughly similar effects on AS in Zn-doped Fe$_3$O$_4$ and, in much less extent, in stoichiometric magnetite. We have, however, found that while doping/nonstoichiometry also lowers $T_V$, making it more prone to temperature chaos, it drastically increases the switching field, activation and switching energies suggesting that the trimeron order, subject to change while AS occurs, is more robust. Consequently, we conclude that the manipulation of trimerons in the process of axis switching and the mechanisms leading to the Verwey transition are distinct phenomena., Comment: Manuscript contains Supplemental Material

Abstract

We propose to use an internal polarized hydrogen storage cell gas target in the AD ring to determine for the first time the two total spin-dependent pbar-p cross sections sigma_1 and sigma_2 at antiproton beam energies in the range from 50 to 450 MeV. The data obtained are of interest by themselves for the general theory of pbar-p interactions since they will provide a first experimental constraint of the spin-spin dependence of the nucleon-antinucleon potential in the energy range of interest. In addition, measurements of the polarization buildup of stored antiprotons are required to define the optimum parameters of a future, dedicated Antiproton Polarizer Ring (APR), intended to feed a double-polarized asymmetric pbar-p collider with polarized antiprotons. Such a machine has recently been proposed by the PAX collaboration for the new Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) at GSI in Darmstadt, Germany. Abstract

Fewer than 1.5 percent of all brain tumors are primary lymphomas (which are composed of cells originating in the lymphatic system). However, the incidence of primary lymphoma of the central nervous system seems to be on the rise. Some of this rise is due to the increased frequency of lymphoma in AIDS patients, but the incidence of primary central nervous system lymphoma is increasing among people without immune deficiencies as well. Brain lymphomas are sensitive to radiation, but radiotherapy usually results in remission rather than a cure. Fewer than half of such patients live longer than 18 months. Some evidence has suggested that the combination of radiation and chemotherapy may be more successful than the use of radiotherapy alone. Twenty-eight patients with primary central nervous system lymphoma were treated with a combination of chemo- and radiotherapy. In 22 of these patients the treatment consisted of a 4,000 cGy of radiation to the entire brain and an additional 1440 cGy to the tumor bed. (A Gy, or Gray, is one Joule of energy absorbed per kilogram of tissue). These patients also received the chemotherapeutic agent cytosine arabinoside and the corticosteroid drug methotrexate. Of the 28 patients treated in this manner, 26 were available for follow-up. Of these, 18 are alive after a median follow-up of 25.4 months. This rate of survival seems to be considerably better than the 10 to 18 months of median survival historically achieved using radiotherapy alone. The relapses of primary central nervous system lymphoma generally occur in the brain, eyes, and meninges (the membrane surrounding the brain and spinal cord). Almost all patients with primary central nervous system lymphoma are found to have disease within the meningeal covering of the brain upon autopsy. While the present study has shown that aggressive combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy can improve the survival of patients with primary central nervous system lymphoma, the results remain unsatisfactory. It may be possible to achieve better results by designing chemotherapeutic protocols which specifically penetrate the brain and eyes. Abstract

The phenomenon related to low symmetry phase of magnetite [Fe.sub.3][O.sub.4] below the Verwey transition is shown to be the switching of magnetic easy axis by external magnetic field connected with a structural transition. The results of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies of axis switching are described and changes are detected in the [super 57]Fe NMR spectra that has shown the structural transition interrelated with the axis switching.

This standing is driving scientists to develop new antibiotics against these microorganisms.Methods: In this study, we measured the MIC/MBC values and estimated the ability of tested molecules to prevent bacterial biofilm formation to explore the effectiveness of β-lactam antibiotics ceftolozane/tazobactam, ceftazidime/avibactam, meropenem/vaborbactam, and ceragenins CSA-13, CSA-44, and CSA-131 against 150 clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa that were divided into five groups, based on their antibiotic resistance profiles to beta-lactams. Selected strains of microorganisms from each group were also subjected to prolonged incubations (20 passages) with ceragenins to probe the development of resistance towards those molecules. Cytotoxicity of tested ceragenins was evaluated using human red blood cell (RBCs) hemolysis and microscopy observations of human lung epithelial A549 cells after ceragenin treatment. Poloxamer 407 (pluronic F-127) at concentrations ranging from 0.5% to 5% was tested as a potential drug delivery substrate to reduce ceragenin toxicity.Results: Collected data proved that ceragenins at low concentrations are highly active against clinical strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa regardless of their resistance mechanisms to conventional antibiotics. The availability of an intense stored beam of polarized antiprotons will provide access to a wealth of single– and double–spin observables, thereby opening a new window on QCD spin physics. A recent experiment at COSY revealed that ep spin–flip cross sections are too small to cause a detectable depolarization of a stored proton beam. This measurement rules out a proposal to use polarized positrons to polarize an antiproton beam by e+pbar spin–flip interactions. Thus, our approach to provide a beam of polarized antiprotons is based on spin filtering, using an internal polarized hydrogen gas target – a method that has been tested with stored protons. We expect to produce a polarized antiproton beam with at least ten orders of magnitude higher intensity than a secondary polarized antiproton beam previously available. Provided that antiproton beams with a polarization of about 15% can be obtained with the APR, the antiproton machine at FAIR (the High Energy Storage Ring) could be converted into a double–polarized asymmetric pbar-p collider by installation of an additional COSY–like ring. In this setup, antiprotons of 3.5 GeV/c collide with protons of 15 GeV/c at c.m. energies of √s ≈ √200 GeV with a luminosity in excess of 10^31 cm−2s−1. The PAX physics program proposed for FAIR has been highly rated, and would include, most importantly, a first direct measurement of the transversity distribution of the valence quarks in the proton, and a first measurement of the moduli and the relative phase of the time–like electric and magnetic form factors G_E,M of the proton. 37. Possible bradycardic mode of death and successful pacemaker treatment in a large family with features of long QT syndrome type 3 and Brugada syndrome

Abstract

We recently identified a novel mutation of SCN5A (1795insD) in a large family with features of both long QT syndrome type 3 and the Brugada syndrome. The purpose of this study was to detail the clinical features and efficacy of pacemaker therapy in preventing sudden death in this family. The study group consisted of 116 adult family members: 60 carriers (29 males) and 56 noncarriers (28 males) of the mutant gene. Investigations included 24-hour Holter monitoring, ergometry, and electrophysiologic studies. Mean, lowest, and highest heart rate were lower in the carriers, but heart rate variability was comparable. In carriers, disproportional QT prolongation was present during bradycardia. No complex ventricular ectopy was recorded, and there were fewer isolated premature beats (both ventricular and atrial) in carriers. All patients were asymptomatic, except for two individuals who experienced syncope; in one of these patients, asystolic episodes (up to 9 sec) were repeatedly recorded. Prolonged HV intervals were present in 5 of 6 patients. Thirty carriers received a prophylactic backup pacemaker. During median follow-up of 4.5 years (range 0.0 to 22.6), their survival rate was 100%. There were five sudden deaths among the remaining 30 carriers without a pacemaker (P = 0.019). This family with a high incidence of nocturnal sudden death is characterized by bradycardia-dependent QT prolongation, intrinsic sinus node dysfunction, and generalized conduction abnormalities. There is a striking absence of complex ventricular ectopy, and pacemaker implantation was effective in preventing sudden death. These findings raise the possibility of a bradycardic rather than tachycardic mode of death

These compounds exhibit pleiotropic effects including antimicrobial activities that rely on their positive charge and amphipathic nature. Use of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) as carriers of 1,4-DHP modulates their properties and enables improved formulations with higher efficacy and less toxicity. Methods: In this study, the antimicrobial and immunomodulatory activities of novel 1,4-DHP derivatives in free form and immobilized on MNPs were determined by evaluating pathogen outgrowth and proinflammatory cytokine release in experimental settings that involve incubation of various 1,4-DHPs with clinical isolates of bacteria or fungi as well as mammalian cell culture models. Results: Conventional immobilization of 1,4-DHP on aminosilane-coated MNPs markedly enhances their antimicrobial activity compared to nonimmobilized molecules, in part because of the higher affinity of these nanosystems for bacterial cell wall components in the presence of human body fluids. Conclusion: Optimized nanosystems are characterized by improved biocompatibility and higher anti-inflammatory properties that provide new opportunities for the therapy of infectious diseases.
