© 2017 Elsevier LtdThis article offers a reconstruction of the vegetation and climate of the south-western Siberian Baraba forest-steppe area during the last ca. 8000 years. The analysis of palynological data from the sediment core of Lake Bolshie Toroki using quantitative methods has made it possible to reconstruct changes of the dominant types of vegetation and mean July air temperatures. Coniferous forests grew in the vicinity of the lake, and mean July air temperatures were similar to present-day ones between 7.9 and 7.0 kyr BP. The warmest and driest climate occurred at 7.0–5.0 kyr BP. At that time, the region had open steppe landscapes; birch groves began to spread. A cooling trend is seen after 5.5 kyr BP, when forest-steppe began to emerge. Steppe communities started to dominate again after 1.5 kyr BP. Mean July air temperatures lower than now are reconstructed for the period of 1.9–1 kyr BP, and then the temperatures became similar to present-day ones. Comparing the archaeological data on the types of economy of the population which inhabited the Baraba forest-steppe with the data on changes in the natural environment revealed a connection between the gradual transition from hunting and fishing to livestock breeding and the development of forest-steppe landscapes with a decrease in the area covered by forests. The development of the forest-steppe as an ecotonic landscape starting around 5 kyr BP might have contributed to the coexistence of several archaeological cultures with different types of economy on the same territory.

Abstract

A 1.8 m thick core of the Holocene (7.9 14C kyr BP) sediments of Lake Itkul' (Novosibirsk Region) has been studied. Based on the geochemical and lithostratigraphic properties of the bottom sediments, we have established the following stages of the lake evolution: (1) the beginning of sedimentation, 7.8-7.0 14C kyr BP; (2) extreme shallowing with a probable complete drying, ~7.0-5.5 14C ky BP; (3) rise in the water level, ~5.5-4.3 14C kyr BP; (4) repeated shallowing, 4.3-2.8 14C kyr BP; and (5) subsequent watering, 2.8-0 14C kyr BP. At present, the lake again tends to shallowing. We have established that Lake Itkul' has mineral sediments with a high content of carbonates (up to 64%). The high concentrations of HCO3- and Ca2+ and stable saturation (S/St > 1) of the surface water cause a shift of the carbonate--calcium equilibrium toward the carbonate formation. The studied authigenic carbonates are aragonite and fine-grained aggregates of poorly crystallized calcite particles with different Mg contents. Aragonite is both biogenic (mollusk and ostracode shells) and chemogenic (formed during the lake shallowing). In addition to carbonates, the lacustrine sediments contain mixed-layer aluminosilicates, feldspars, and quartz. The presence of pyrite throughout the sediment section indicates reducing conditions and the activity of sulfate-reducing microorganisms. Carbonates (especially aragonite) are significantly enriched in strontium. Manganese does not form its own minerals but is present as an isomorphic impurity in authigenic carbonates. 25. Size effects in chlorine doped PbSe thin films

Abstract

The possibility of obtaining strongly degenerate (≈ 3·10²⁰ сm⁻³) PbSe thin films (d = 5 – 220 nm) with n-type conductivity by thermal evaporation in vacuum of PbSe crystals doped with PbCl₂, with subsequent condensation onto (001) KCl substrates was established. It was shown that the films had high homogeneity degree, no grain structure was observed. The thickness dependences of thermoelectric properties (the Seebeck coefficient S, the Hall coefficient RH and the electric conductivity σ) of thin films were obtained. In the thickness range d ≈ 5 ÷ 30 nm, oscillation properties were observed with growth of d that are attributable to electron gas quantization. The calculation of S(d) dependence on the assumption of size quantization with regard to contribution of several subbands and the thickness dependence of the Fermi energy was shown to be in agreement with the experimental data. In the region of d > 30 nm there was growth of S and σ with thickness, which is attributable to manifestation of classical size effect and interpreted in the framework of Fuchs-Sondheimer and Mayer theories.

Abstract

We present results of research into the mineral composition of the Holocene sediments of Lake Malye Chany of the Chany lake system located in the Baraba steppe and comprising three lakes: Bol'shie Chany, Malye Chany, and Yarkul', connected by channels. The sediments were studied by XRD, IR and Raman spectroscopy, laser granulometry, analysis of stable 18O and 13C isotopes, elemental analysis (XRF), etc. Mineral analysis has revealed predominant quartz, feldspars, and carbonates and subordinate gypsum, bassanite, pyrite, mica, chlorite, and kaolinite. Mathematical modeling of the XRD spectra of carbonates, using Pearson VII function, made it possible to identify the carbonate phases and determine their quantitative proportions. The obtained high-resolution carbonate record providing information about the stratigraphic distribution of carbonates in the dated section was compared with the available lithological, geochemical, and isotope data. Based on these data, we have reconstructed five stages of the Holocene evolution of the Malye Chany basin. It is shown that the proportions of minerals in the section vary in accordance with the lake level fluctuations in the alternating periods of the Holocene regional arid and humid climate. We compared the mineral compositions of the bottom sediments of Lake Malye Chany and Yarkovsky Pool of Lake Bol'shie Chany. Abstract

The evolution of peat deposits of the Vydrino bog (southern Baikal region) and concentration of elements in them are discussed. The bog peat massif more than 4 m in thickness formed mostly during the Holocene. The beginning of peat formation dates back to the late Allerød (13.1 ka). At present, the Vydrino bog is a biogeocoenosis of the high-moor type with a transitional peat deposit. We have established that the bog nonuniformly accumulated chemical elements during its formation. Concentration of Pb, Sn, Cd, Zn, and Sb in recent vegetation and in the upper layer of the peat bog is mainly due to forest fires and anthropogenic air pollution. The anomalous enrichment of peat with Zn and Cu in the Early Holocene (12.1-8.8 ka) horizons proceeded through the periodic inflow of thermal groundwater into the bottom part of the peat deposit. Authigenic Zn and Cu sulfides formed on the inner membrane of the cell wall of sphagnum moss. Geochemical modeling has shown that Zn and Cu sulfides can form abiotically. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The study presents a summary of the latest data on ostracod microfaunas from Middle-Upper Holocene lacustrine deposits of southern West Siberia collected from lakes Malye Chany, Bol'shaya Lozhka, Beloe, and paleolake Chicha. A total of 28 ostracod species were identified. The identified ostracod assemblages reveal local variations in the lake ecosystems as well as general trends, which can be correlated with both regional and global climate changes. A cooling episode during the second half of the Subboreal is marked by the transition from a warm-water mesohaline assemblage to cold-water candonid ostracods at ca. 3.4 cal ka BP. The widespread occurrence of mesopolythermophilic ostracod species at 1.9-0.6 cal ka BP indicates the end of cooling and lowering of lake-water level. From 0.6 cal ka BP to present, the ostracod assemblages area characterized by the high specific diversity, which is probably an indication of the increased variability of aquatic ecosystems due to fluctuations in salinity and water levels of the lakes. Abstract

Quaternary sediments from the borehole DBC-1 drilled in the Darhad Basin, northern Mongolia, have been studied by thermomagnetic analysis (248 samples) and probe microanalysis (9 samples) to determine the origin (cosmic or terrestrial) of native iron. Most of the samples showed extremely low contents of native iron. Only 26 samples have iron in contents sufficient for its reliable identification (10-5-10-3%). The negligible content of native iron in the Darhad Basin sediments distinguishes them from the earlier studied sediments of different geologic associations of Eurasia and the Atlantic, which we explain by the high sedimentation rate in this basin. However, the bimodal distribution of native-iron contents in the samples with a distinct "zero" mode, similar to that in the objects of Eurasia and the Atlantic, testifies to the predominantly cosmic origin of the native iron. © 2013.

Abstract

Hydrochemical analysis of the high-salinity lakes in the Ishim Plain (>250-300 g/L) located at the border with the Northern Kazakhstan uranium ore province is performed. The studies have shown that the main factor of concentration and redistribution of uranium in the lake basins of the Ishim Plain are the processes of intense salt deflation causing sanding of lakes and uranium depletion in the near-surface layer of the bottom deposits. The correlation between the hydroxide forms of uranium binding in the bottom lacustrine deposits of the Ishim Plain and the coffinite composition of the Semizbai deposit makes it possible to consider this province to be promising for the discovery of hydromineral uranium deposits. Abstract

Climate is an important control on biomass burning, but the sensitivity of fire to changes in temperature and moisture balance has not been quantified. We analyze sedimentary charcoal records to show that the changes in fire regime over the past 21,000 yrs are predictable from changes in regional climates. Analyses of paleo-fire data show that fire increases monotonically with changes in temperature and peaks at intermediate moisture levels, and that temperature is quantitatively the most important driver of changes in biomass burning over the past 21,000 yrs. Given that a similar relationship between climate drivers and fire emerges from analyses of the interannual variability in biomass burning shown by remote-sensing observations of month-by-month burnt area between 1996 and 2008, our results signal a serious cause for concern in the face of continuing global warming., AuthorCount:62

Abstract

The article focuses on a new factual data on the evolution of the Aral Sea and its connections with the West Siberian Plain through its Holocene. Borehole M-2 drilled in 2003 on the exposed former bottom of the Aral Sea retrieved a sedimentary sequence 20 meter thick in total composed of light gray clay, dark brown fine-grained clayey sand, and yellowish gray sandy silt with jarosite spots. It highlights seven ostracod taxa such as Limnocythere inopinata, and Tyrrhenocythere amnicola wherein all these taxa are typical examples of the Aral invertebrate fauna. Single molluscan shells are documented in intervals of 0.0-0.80 meter and 4.15-20.0 meter. The application of the accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) method to date ostracods and small gastropod shells is discussed.

Abstract

The mechanism of the formation of light-scattering centers in sapphire crystals grown by horizontal directed crystallization in gas atmospheres reducing with respect to the Al2O3 melt was studied. The experimental regularities here significantly differ from those observed upon formation of other conventional defects in sapphire crystals (vacancy pores, gas bubbles, and so on). It is shown that the known formation mechanisms of macroscopic (≥1 μm) inclusions in crystals are not acceptable in this case. Abstract

Climate is an important control on biomass burning, but the sensitivity of fire to changes in temperature and moisture balance has not been quantified. We analyze sedimentary charcoal records to show that the changes in fire regime over the past 21,000 yrs are predictable from changes in regional climates. Analyses of paleo- fire data show that fire increases monotonically with changes in temperature and peaks at intermediate moisture levels, and that temperature is quantitatively the most important driver of changes in biomass burning over the past 21,000 yrs. Given that a similar relationship between climate drivers and fire emerges from analyses of the interannual variability in biomass burning shown by remote-sensing observations of month-by-month burnt area between 1996 and 2008, our results signal a serious cause for concern in the face of continuing global warming.
