The central question posed by Schiemann and Ulrich (2017) focuses on what human resources (HR) leaders need to know or do to deliver business results in the new work environment. Although understanding the knowledge and capabilities that successful HR professionals need is critical, the focal article places an overemphasis on the characteristics of individual HR leaders alone, without fully exploring the environmental inhibitors of their strategic effectiveness. In this commentary, we argue that competencies and the environment must be given equal attention to maximize impact on business and talent outcomes. We first describe the strategic competency gap among HR professionals and discuss four key organizational barriers that impede the strategic impact of HR on the business. We then offer recommendations for how industrial–organizational (I-O) psychologists and HR leaders can help remove these barriers to maximize strategic effectiveness.

Objective: To understand whether income and education have unique contributions in the prevention and management of diabetes, as measured by Hba1c levels among diagnosed and undiagnosed individuals. Method: Data were obtained from the Nashville Stress and Health Study ( N = 1,189). Ordinary least squares regression analyses were used to examine the associations among education, annual household income, diabetes onset, and diabetes management (Hba1c). Results: Education, but not income, was inversely associated with Hba1c in undiagnosed participants. Income, but not education, was inversely associated with Hba1c among diagnosed participants. Discussion: These results support the idea that education and income provide non-fungible social and economic resources that vary in their consequences for Hba1c level depending on whether someone has been diagnosed with diabetes. The social resources provided by education may be more important in delaying the onset of disease, whereas resources provided by income may be more important for disease management.

The rates of illicit drug use among African American women are increasing, yet African American women are least likely to participate in treatment for substance use disorders when compared to women of other racial groups. The current study examined family history of substance use, perceived family support, and John Henryism Active Coping (JHAC) as correlates to seeking treatment for substance abuse. The underlying theoretical frame of JHAC (James et al., 1983) suggests that despite limited resources and psychosocial stressors, African Americans believe that hard work and self-determination are necessary to cope with adversities. The current study is a secondary data analyses of 206 drug-using African American women (N=104 urban community women with no criminal justice involvement and N=102 women living in the community on supervised probation) from urban cities in a southern state. It was expected that African American women with a family history of substance abuse, higher levels of perceived family support, and more active coping skills would be more likely to have participated in substance abuse treatment. Step-wise logistic regression results reveal that women on probation, had children, and had a family history of substance abuse were significantly more likely to report participating in substance abuse treatment. Perceived family support and active coping were significant negative correlates of participating in treatment. Implication of results suggests coping with psychosocial stressors using a self-determined and persistent coping strategy may be problematic for drug-using women with limited resources.

Radiographic frames used for longitudinal studies may be in part unreadable for measuring crestal bone change. Sites may not be present on the film, or the measurement reliability may be compromised because of dissimilar geometry. Several techniques used to address this problem are expensive, time-consuming, and required great skill. For the present study a commercially-available alignment system was simply modified by addition of a reference pin in the bite block, facilitating the repositioning of the film holder for a second exposure. This study determined the ability of the modified instrument to: 1) improve the geometrical correspondence between serial radiographs; and 2) reduce the frequency of missed sites in the film. Two pairs of x-rays were taken for each of 40 subjects, 1 pair with the standard alignment instrument of an assigned site and 1 pair with the modified instrument of the contralateral site. Measurements of alveolar bone height were performed using the "side by side" technique. The modified instrument yielded significantly smaller measurement differences and a significantly better geometrical correspondence than the conventional system (P < 0.05). Also, the modified instrument yielded significantly greater (P < 0.01) readable sites (86%) as compared to the conventional instrument (62%). The simply-modified instrument facilitates the correct interpretation of serial radiographs.

Vowel durations following the production of voiced and voiceless stop consonants produced during simultaneous communication (SC) were investigated by recording sign language users during SC and speech alone (SA). Under natural speaking conditions, or speaking alone (SA), vowels following voiced stop consonants are longer in duration than vowels following voiceless stops. Although the results indicated longer sentence durations for SC than SA, they showed no differences in the relative duration of vowels following voiced or voiceless stops. Vowel durations following voiced stop consonants were consistently longer than vowel durations following voiceless stops. This finding is consistent with previous research indicating that global temporal alterations in SC do not degrade temporal or spectral cues of spoken English. Learning outcomes As a result of this activity, the participant will be able to (1) describe simultaneous communication; (2) explain the role of simultaneous communication in communication with persons who are hearing-impaired; (3) describe how the voicing characteristic of syllable-initial consonants affects the duration of subsequent vowels; and (4) explain that simultaneous communication does not influence the relative durations of vowels following voiced and voiceless stop consonants.

An aluminum wedge can be used to quantify volumetric change in crestal alveolar bone which has been identified through subtraction radiography. This study compares two methods for using an aluminum wedge for this purpose: 1) the aluminum wedge is present in both radiographs and used to determine the aluminum equivalent bone density present in the region of change for each radiograph; and 2) the aluminum wedge is present in only one radiograph and the difference image of the wedge in the subtraction image is used to calculate the aluminum equivalent change in bone density. Pairs of standardized x-rays were taken with synthetic bone chips of known weights placed when the second x-ray was taken. The volumetric change produced by the bone chips was calculated by the two methods. The relationship of the calculated volumes to the chip weights had a higher r2 value (P0.05) for the two-wedge method than for the one-wedge method. The two-wedge method is recommended for volumetric quantification of alveolar bone change. The influence of the clarity of the aluminum wedge image in the x-ray pairs was also examined in this study and found to be significant. Attention must be given to factors which affect the aluminum wedge image characteristics to achieve optimal results.
