In contrast to existing, static audience controls that map poorly onto users' ideal audiences on social networking sites, dynamic audience selection (DAS) controls can make intelligent inferences to help users select their ideal audience given context and content. But does this potential utility outweigh its potential intrusiveness? We surveyed 250 participants to model users' ideal versus their chosen audiences with static controls and found a significant misalignment, suggesting that DAS might provide utility. We then designed a sensitizing prototype that allowed users to select audiences based on personal attributes, content, or context constraints. We evaluated DAS vis-a-vis Facebook's existing audience selection controls through a counterbalanced summative evaluation. We found that DAS's expressiveness, customizability, and scalability made participants feel more confident about the content they shared on Facebook. However, low transparency, distrust in algorithmic inferences, and the emergence of privacy-violating side channels made participants find the prototype unreliable or intrusive. We discuss factors that affected this trade-off between DAS's utility and intrusiveness and synthesize design implications for future audience selection tools.

This essay asserts that Nietzsche proposes an important role for society within his ethics, and that this societal aspect has been greatly overlooked by Nietzsche scholars. By identifying a soul-state analogy and resemblance to virtue ethics, this essay contends that Nietzsche intends for societies and individuals to be seen as complementary parts of the will to power. Like Aristotle, Nietzsche prescribes an ideal society essential to greatness. By recognizing the importance of the role of society in Nietzsche’s philosophy, Nietzsche scholarship is better positioned to consider new applications of his philosophical principles with his goals in mind.

Purpose: Cataract surgery is increasing in Australia and represents a significant burden on limited health resources. This study examines the frequency and outcomes of cataract surgery for patients who were hospitalized overnight compared with those treated as day surgery cases. Methods: Medical records of 671 consecutive admissions for cataract surgery at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital were reviewed. Data analysed included demographic features, insurance status, length of hospitalization, ophthalmic conditions, medical conditions, social problems and planned surgical technique. Ophthalmic and anaesthetic complications, active ophthalmic and medical interventions were also studied. Results: Of the 671 patient admissions for cataract during the study period, 226 (33.4%) were hospitalized overnight. Factors significantly associated with overnight hospitalization in univariate analyses include older age, female sex, country residence, Veterans’ Affairs insurance, monocular vision status, pre-existing ischaemic heart disease, pre-existing asthma/chronic obstructive lung disease, absence of carer, transportation problems, planned extra-capsular cataract extraction technique, ophthalmic complications and active ophthalmic and/or medical interventions. After adjusting for possible confounding factors using backwards stepwise multivariate logistic regression models all except pre-existing ischaemic heart disease and opthalmic complications were significantly associated with overnight admission for cataract surgery. In total, 14 cases (2.1%) needed active ophthalmic and/or medical interventions, 13 overnight cases and one day case. Conclusions: These data suggest that many patients who are hospitalized overnight for cataract surgery could be safely treated as day cases. Such a shift in the pattern of care for cataract surgery could provide a significant potential for health care savings.

This article offers a proposal for combining the sport sociological and sport psychological imaginations. In order to effect this rapprochement, some serious adjustments to the ways in which many applied sport psychologists and sport sociologists think about and conduct research are required. Thus, the initial part of this article expresses some critiques, albeit brief, of current tendencies within both sport sociology and sport psychology. We deemed these critiques necessary to advance a neo-Millsian position on the articulation of social structure and personality. This neo-Millsian position draws on the ego-psychoanalytical tradition to offer suggestions for how we might reconceive the problems of indispensability/expendability in the Prolympic structures of sport and for how we might, using a life-histories (biographical) methodology, engage in useful or practical research, especially on the problematics of how individuals handle/mishandle early, pre-career, and mid-career failure, and, in the long-run, inevitable failure at the end of their careers. Where, then, is the common ground between sport sociology and sport psychology? We argue that it is the analysis of ego-practices and ego-defenses as learned, consciously or unconsciously, over our biographical lives as they intersect with, and are contoured by, social history and social structure.

Patient satisfaction (PS), a key measure of quality of cancer care, is a core study outcome of the multi-site National Cancer Institute-funded Patient Navigation Research Program. Despite large numbers of underserved monolingual Spanish speakers (MSS) residing in USA, there is no validated Spanish measure of PS that spans the whole spectrum of cancer-related care. The present study reports on the validation of the Patient Satisfaction with Cancer Care (PSCC) measure for Spanish (PSCC-Sp) speakers receiving diagnostic and therapeutic cancer-related care.Original PSCC items were professionally translated and back translated to ensure cultural appropriateness, meaningfulness, and equivalence. Then, the resulting 18-item PSCC-Sp measure was administered to 285 MSS. We evaluated latent structure and internal consistency of the PSCC-Sp using principal components analysis (PCA) and Cronbach coefficient alpha (α). We used correlation analyses to demonstrate divergence and convergence of the PSCC-Sp with a Spanish version of the Patient Satisfaction with Interpersonal Relationship with Navigator (PSN-I-Sp) measure and patients' demographics.The PCA revealed a coherent set of items that explicates 47% of the variance in PS. Reliability assessment demonstrated that the PSCC-Sp had high internal consistency (α = 0.92). The PSCC-Sp demonstrated good face validity and convergent and divergent validities as indicated by moderate correlations with the PSN-I-Sp (p = 0.003) and nonsignificant correlations with marital status and household income (all p(s)0.05).The PSCC-Sp is a valid and reliable measure of PS and should be tested in other MSS populations.
