Abstract

Fast urbanization has boosted the automotive sector in cities. Two service stations collected car wash water, which was analyzed thoroughly. pH, total suspended solids, total dissolved solids, oil & grease, chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand, chlorides, and sulfates were measured. Chemical treatment used alum, while physical treatment used sawdust and sugarcane bagasse. Sample A contains wash water from 2- and 4-wheelers, while sample B has only 4-wheeler wash water. The empirical results show that physical treatment filter bed porosity, surface area, and height affect substance sorption. COD reduction for wood dust and sugarcane in sample A is 91.59% and 90.70%, while in sample B it is 81.40% and 86.70%. COD and oil & grease concentration were measured at 3, 6, and 9 cm filter columns. The percentage reduction in COD and oil & grease was related to filter material penetration. COD, oil, and grease removal effectiveness increases with filter bed depth. Alum's COD reduction is 89.10 in sample A and 87.50 in sample B, according to coagulant dosage. Alum removes 92.40% and 93.20% of oil & grease in samples A and B. Sample A used sugarcane bagasse and sawdust to remove 94.31% and 93.40% of oil & grease. Removal percentages in sample B were 92.67% and 93.80%. Sugarcane and wood dust reduces COD and oil & grease more in sample A than sample B. Sample A had a lower alum removal rate than sample B. Abstract

An experiment was conducted at Bhubaneshwar, Orissa, to study the presence of male Brinjal Shoot and Fruit Borer (BSFB) outside cropping area and the effect of wind direction on male BSFB trap catches. Water traps with 4 mg of synthetic BSFB pheromone lure in rubber septa were placed at 0, 50, 100, 150 and 350 m away from a brinjal field in all four directions i.e., North, South, East and West. Water level in the traps was maintained constant and lures were changed at 20 days interval. Count of BSFB trapped males and record of wind direction was made every 24 h for 61 days. Results indicated that the number of male BSFB moths in distantly located traps (350 m from the brinjal field) was at par with the numbers observed in traps placed in the main brinjal field. Traps located at 50 and 100 m from brinjal field attracted less male BSFB moths than those at 0, 150 and 350 m indicating the feasibility of trapping male BSFB moths even in non-brinjal area. Trap direction did not significantly influence trap catch. Nearly 60% of BSFB male moths were observed in traps placed against direction of the wind.

20. Gaussian kernel based HMM for time series data analysis.

Abstract

An algorithm for incorporating a Gaussian kernel function in to a novel version Hidden Markov Model(HMM) has been proposed for forecasting the stock market levels by classifying current financial data using historical data. K-means algorithm has been invoked for forming arbitrary clusters of the data which in turn have been subjected to minimum distance algorithm for the extraction of features corresponding to expected return and risk. A HMM has been trained with the classified historical data with these attributes. This trained HMM has been used to predict return and risk for NSE index data. Various stages of the proposed model have been explained to list out all the observation and state vectors. Detailed comparative study using statistical distribution of Benchmark data, namely Standard and Poor 500 index and DJIA index, clearly indicate the superiority of this version of HMM tool over the other statistical tools.
